From the Pastor
The Easter season is coming to a close. We remember
that our early Church leaders decided that Easter was too
important an occasion only to be celebrated on one Sunday.
To that end, the Season of Easter (formerly called Eastertide) extends for seven Sundays. The color of the season is
white because this is a festival of our Lord. Even though every Sunday
is a mini-celebration of the Resurrection, greater emphasis is placed on
that great expression of God’s love on the Sundays of Easter.
The Day of Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon
the disciples fifty days after Resurrection. The Holy Trinity is the first
Sunday after Pentecost which celebrates our understanding of the God
whom we know and worship as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Not three
gods, but One God known in three Persons. It’s a mystery that we accept by faith.
May 22 is also the day we will celebrate a couple of special ministries of Augustana—music and education. The children of Augustana
will join the Celebration Choir for a musical offering, the AWE Group will
lead part of the worship, and we will recognize our musicians and our
Sunday school teachers.
I am also looking forward to June 1. That is the day my threemonth sabbatical begins. More about that in the June edition of The
Trumpeter.

Stewardship Corner
Attendance often decreases during the summer months. Financial giving also tends to decrease.
That is not Christian stewardship! We still
have ministry to do and bills to pay. We don’t pay
dues to belong to the Church; instead we do
have the opportunity to give thanks to God for all
God’s blessings as we give back to God a portion of what God has first given us.
Going to miss a Sunday? Bring two week’s
of offerings the week before. You could mail your
offering to us.

Spring Cleaning!
Come join the fun! Saturday May 7th will be
“Yard Day” at Augustana. Help our church
grounds to look beautiful to the thousands of cars
which pass by daily. We’ll begin at 9 AM and
hope with lots of help that we will be done by
noon. “Many hands make light work.” Bring your
favorite garden tool—we will probably
be pulling weeds, laying mulch and
cleaning up what is left over from winter. How about taverns, chips, veggies
and bars for lunch afterwards??

Appreciation Sunday
May 22 is Music Sunday this year at Augustana. The Celebration Choir will offer several
anthems at the 10:15 worship service. The children will sing. The AWE musicians will be assisting in worship leadership. Michael Madsen will be
playing the organ.
On this day, we will also publicly thank all the
teachers in our Sunday school program. 3-YearOlds/Pre-K/K—Marlene Levine, Robin Levine,

Social Concerns
May Benevolence will be donations to
purchase Biblesticks for our military men and women. These devices allow them to listen to the Bible
when they are in areas or situations where they
cannot read the Bible; but can listen. This request
was made by Scott Plambeck, who has found them
to be very inspiring and comforting, while serving
his country. In order to contribute to this benevolence, please write a check to “Augustana Lutheran
Church”, and write “Biblesticks” on
the memo line; or place cash in a
pew
envelope
and
mark
it
“Biblesticks.” The cost of the Biblestick is $25, but any donation will
be appreciated. Thank you for your

Eucharistic Ministry
Approximately twice monthly two members
take communion to our shut-in members, following the Sunday worship service. This provides
an opportunity to visit our homebound members
as well as offer them the Sacrament. If you are
interested in providing this service or have any
questions about it; please contact Linda Nygard

The Day of Pentecost
Help needed: Irving School can use help
with their carnival on May 17 between 5:00
and 7:00 PM. Please let Pastor know if you
will help.
“What does this mean?” the
devout ask (Acts 2:12). For
those gathered in that
house, the event meant the birth of sudden, surprising, unmerited new life. Filled with the Holy Spirit,
they burst from the house with a story to share
about God’s wonders. But what does this event of
Pentecost mean for us, today, many centuries later? God is at work here, now, in the world. Through
the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, God is
walking alongside as friend, truth-teller, comforter,
and guide.
In Holy Baptism, the Spirit rests on the heads of
young and old alike. Filled with the Holy Spirit, the
baptized have an old, old story to tell of Jesus and
his love—and a new, new story of how God is birthing sudden, surprising, and unmerited new life all
around us, every day. God is at work, here, now in
the world through the lives of everyday Christians.
Jesus’ work continues through the lives of all the
baptized. We discover meaning from this Pentecost
story today, not only for our own sake but for the
sake of the world that so hungers for this life. (From

of 1,200 events nationwide in 2015,
earning the “Cream of the Crop” status?? With our $30,787 in donations,
we ranked #5 in the state of Iowa.
And the Augustana Team is a big
part of the 2015 success. Last year
our church had 8 walkers who raised
$1,498!
Church World Service is celebrating its 70th year, since beginning in
1946, in the after-math of World War
II. The city-wide CROP team is meeting already to begin planning for our
40thanniversary Siouxland CROP

Summer Worship
The last day of Sunday school will be
May 15 and the kids will celebrate
Sunday Sundae on May 22. The Celebration Choir will also have its last
rehearsal that day. Adult education
will continue throughout the summer.
We will continue to offer the 8:00 and
10:15 Holy Communion services
each week.

Bible Sticks for our Military Personnel
Back in the Spring of 2011, the Congregation of Augustana made a special contribution of $1,105 to the Bible Stick program! This was awesome!
Over the past few years, with my many deployments overseas, I had the opportunity to use
the Bible Stick; on many small trips throughout
the Middle East in the fall of 2011 – Spring of
2012.
I have approached various base chaplains
about this Bible Stick program. From 2011 –
2015 all I got for a response was that they were
“slightly familiar.” One had heard about it prior to
his deployment, but he didn’t know the process
of distributing them to the Soldiers and Airmen. I
explained what I knew about the program then
we logged on to the Bible Stick web site. More
information was available online, which also directed him to call for any additional information
and questions.
Most recently, Chaplain Stephen Peters from
our unit, the 185th Air Refueling Wing, deployed
to Incerlick AB near Adana, Turkey. I mentioned
the program to him around Christmas time, he
replied that he “found the Military Bible Stick
online at https://militarybiblestick.com/ and he
had ordered some. They provide them for chaplains free of charge and he was very much looking forward to having the resource there.
The Bible Stick is relatively easy to use; a
simple on/off button, and forward and back buttons which move within a book and from chapter
to chapter. I listened to it during parts of my 1012-hour missions flying over the Mediterranean
Sea from Southern Spain to Northern Libya, or
flying from Qatar to either Iraq or Afghanistan. I
also listened to it in my room, and was able to
follow along in my Study Bible as well. Being familiar with books on tape, I expected the narrator
to just read the verses in a normal voice, with a
few high and low changes in his voice to emphasize important areas. I was really surprised, and
pleased, to hear different characters being read
by different people. This actually kept my attention better than expected.
Thanks again to all that contributed to this
mission. Hopefully, more military personnel will
know about this program and be able to listen to
the Bible while deployed, and continue upon their
return.

An Opportunity to Serve
Augustana members assist in preparing food and
serving meals at the Soup Kitchen 8 times per year, in
September, December, April and June. This involves 2
hours in the afternoon (2-4 pm), for preparation and 2-3
hours (4:45-6:30 to serve and clean-up). If this is a service you would like to be involved with please call Linda
Nygard at 712-258-5220 for details.
Youth volunteers must be at least 13-14 years of age,
no more than 3-4 youth on any
given shift, and must always be
supervised by an adult and are
expected to work until cleanup
is completed, (dishes are done,
tables are cleaned and washed
and floor is swept).

The Holy Trinity
The doctrine of the Trinity invites us to consider how
a God constituted by relationship—the Father with the
Son, the Son with the Spirit, the Spirit with the Father—
draws us into that relationship with God and one another. Gradually or suddenly, through the work of the Spirit,
we come to know our belonging to the Father and to
Christ’s body.
In such loving relationships, truth is discovered. But
people cannot bear the truth all at once, so discipleship
and faith formation are gradual processes of listening for
the Spirit’s voice. Christian practices such as worship,
learning, and service are occasions for people of all ages to be “guided into truth.” Such practices are rooted in
baptism, in which God draws us into a lifelong relationship in which we grow into truth and love over time—
guided by the Spirit, accompanied by Jesus, and having
peace with the Father.
In Romans, we hear the truth of how love originates
and grows in us: Poured into our hearts by the Holy
Spirit, God’s love gives us a hope that will never disappoint. Christian community offers the delightful opportunity to experience one’s own growth in hope, faith, and
love, and to witness others’ growth as they too are
drawn more deeply into relationship
with the triune God. Trinity Sunday
