Spooky times in the Sugar Shack

he Sugar Shack near the Juno Beach Mess was the site of some Halloween
preparation this past Sunday, October 28. The Rod and Gun Club hosted a
pumpkin carving event for kids and adults with a special place in their heart for
Halloween.
Spooky sound effects filled the air, the scent of pumpkin permeated the building as
the kids got their hands dirty carving their pumpkins. There were templates available for
precision patterns and nifty dremel tool that allowed the kids to get creative without the
dangers of sharp knives. Taylor Mollison, explained his pumpkin’s designs, “It has 2 of
my own designs, one which I am not so sure what it is, and one which is like a skull.
Another was from a piece of paper which I traced which looks like a flary skull of
doom!”

e dimanche 28 octobre, petits et grands ont envahi la cabane à sucre située près
du Mess Juno Beach afin de préparer l’Halloween. En effet, le Club de chasse
et pêche y tenait une activité de sculpture de citrouilles pour les enfants et les
adultes qui ont un faible pour l’Halloween.
Des sons inquiétants résonnaient partout, l’odeur des citrouilles embaumait le bâtiment et les enfants s’engluaient les mains à sculpter leur citrouille. Les enfants pouvaient
utiliser des pochoirs mis à leur disposition et se servir d’un fantastique outil Dremel, qui
leur a permis de laisser libre cours à leur créativité sans s’exposer au danger des
couteaux tranchants. Le jeune Taylor Mollison a expliqué la décoration de sa citrouille
« J’ai créé moi même deux des dessins. L’un d’entre eux, je ne sais pas trop ce que c’est,
et l’autre ressemble à un crâne. J’ai également utilisé un pochoir pour tracer quelque
chose qui a l’air d’un superbe crâne lugubre! »

Angus Santa Claus Parade

Well it is that time once again, time to start planning for the Annual Santa Claus Parade.
We are in the process of contacting all businesses, clubs and organizations in the area
for their participation in the parade.
The theme is “Christmas Around The World”
Start time for the parade is 10 a.m. (form up starts at 9 a.m.) from Peacekeeper’s Park
across from Sobeys proceeding along Mill St to the Essa Arena where children will have
the opportunity to visit with Santa and have their picture taken.
You will be able to take pictures of your children with Santa, so don’t forget your cameras.
If you are entering a float or are a marching unit, the committee has to be aware of this,
therefore there is a registration form available (a copy is below). Registration forms
must be returned to the locations stated on it by November 8, 2012.
One reminder – no one is allowed to throw candy or anything else from floats. You may
walk along the parade route and hand items out.

Community Recreation Needs Assessment

our opinions on Borden’s Community Recreation programs, services, facility access and special events matter to us! Borden Community Recreation will be asking all regular, reserve and retired military members to complete
the Canadian Forces Community Recreation Needs Assessment.
The Needs Assessment is available online at

Wartime Borden Aircraft found in Lake Muskoka

“This is the second time that I have visited Camp Borden;
the first time was February 16, 1941,” said Mr. Tom Bates to
a mixed group of military and civilian people gathered inside
the Air Annex of the Base Borden Military Museum. “I was a
young boy, and I attended a memorial service for seven airmen who lost their lives in flying accidents; my brother
Theodore Bates was one of these airmen.” Mr. Bates had been
invited to speak at an information session in April 2008,
where a group named the Lost Airmen in Muskoka Project
(LAMP) explained to members of 16 Wing and other military
representatives, their efforts to locate sites and document accidents involving military aircraft that crashed in the Muskoka
area during the Second World War. One of the never-recovered aircraft identified by LAMP was Nomad #3521, the aircraft that carried Leading Aircraftman (LAC) Theodore (Ted)
Bates to his premature end in December 1940.
It was on Friday, December 13, 1940, that two Northrop A17 Nomad aircraft belonging to No.1 Service Flying Training
School (1SFTS), operating out of RCAF Station Camp
Borden, collided in mid-air over Lake Muskoka. One of the
two aircraft was #3521 with on-board LAC Ted Bates, who
had graduated from his pilot course and received his wings the
previous day, and Flight Lieutenant (F/Lt.) Peter Campbell, a
flight instructor on loan from the Royal Air Force (RAF). The
other Nomad, #3512, carried LAC William Gosling, another
recent graduate and Sergeant (Sgt) Lionel Francis, also an
instructor from the RAF. The two Nomads were part of a 50
aircraft search party looking for another missing aircraft,
Nomad #3503 flown by LAC Clayton Hopton (also from
1SFTS), which had failed to return to base on the previous

day. Nomad #3503 was found a few days later near Everett,
not far from Borden, with LAC Hopton's body nearby.
Efforts to locate and recover the two aircraft that collided
were unsuccessful until the end of January 1941, when
Nomad #3512 was found in Lake Muskoka. The aircraft was
partially raised and the body of LAC Gosling was recovered,
but the body of Sgt Francis was only recovered from the lake
later that June. There was no trace of Nomad #3521 or LAC
Bates and F/Lt. Campbell, at least not until decades later when
members of LAMP began their search.
In July 2012, after two summers of surveying the lake bed,
the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Underwater Recovery
Unit discovered what they thought may be the aircraft.
Through multiple recovery dives, the OPP was able to confirm that the aircraft was the Nomad #3521 through the discovery of an inscribed cigarette case belonging to Peter
Campbell and inscribed ring belonging to Ted Bates.
Earlier this summer, a small delegation from 16 Wing and
a representative from the Directorate of History and
Heritage’s Casualty Identification Section, travelled to
Guelph to return to Mr. Tom Bates some personal effects that
belonged to his brother Ted. In a low-key event, LCol Peter
Earle, Commander 16 Wing, presented to him a ring, a button,
and the pilot wings that his brother had been awarded the day
before his disappearance. The wings had not even been sewn
onto his uniform yet.
While this presentation may provide some closure to the
Bates family, the story of LAC Bates and Nomad aircraft
#3521 is likely to continue. Divers from the CF Fleet Diving
Unit (Atlantic) were on Lake Muskoka from October 11 to 17,
2012, to survey the wreckage. The findings of the dive will be
announced at a later date.
Various organisations have shown interest in the possibility of recovering the aircraft because only 32 Nomad aircraft
were acquired by the RCAF in 1940, and none were put to
civilian use or kept as museum pieces. Nomads were used initially at Camp Borden as advanced trainers, but the lucky ones
that survived the first few years were later converted to target
towing duties.

des Forces canadiennes Borden. « J’étais alors un tout jeune garçon, et j’assistais à un service commémoratif en l’honneur de sept membres de la Force aérienne qui avaient perdu la
vie au cours d’accidents en vol; mon frère, Theodore Bates, était l’un de ces aviateurs. » En
avril 2008, M. Bates a été invité à prendre la parole durant une séance d’information au cours
de laquelle les membres d’un groupe portant le nom de Lost Airmen in Muskoka Project
(LAMP) (Projet des aviateurs perdus de Muskoka) ont expliqué leur mission au personnel
de la 16e Escadre ainsi qu’à d’autres représentants militaires : identifier les endroits, dans la
région de Muskoka, où des d’aéronefs militaires se sont écrasés pendant la Seconde Guerre
mondiale et documenter ces accidents. L’avion d’entraînement Nomad 3521, au bord duquel
se trouvait en décembre 1940 l’Aviateur chef (Avc) Theodore Bates dont la vie a pris fin prématurément, figure parmi les aéronefs qui n’ont jamais été récupérés par LAMP.
Le vendredi 13 décembre 1940, deux aéronefs A17 Nomad de Northrop, propriété de l’École de pilotage no 1 à la Base de l’ARC Camp Borden, sont entrés en collision, en vol, au
dessus du lac Muskoka. L’Avc Ted Bates – qui venait de terminer son cours de pilote et avait
obtenu, le jour précédent, son brevet de pilote – ainsi que le Capitaine d’aviation (Capt avn)

Peter Campbell, un instructeur de vol prêté par la Royal Air Force (RAF), se trouvaient à
bord de l’un des aéronefs, le Nomad 3521, alors que l’Avc William Gosling, diplômé fraîchement émoulu, et le Sergent Lionel Francis, instructeur de la RFA, étaient à bord de l’autre
aéronef, le Nomad 3512. Les deux Nomad faisaient partie d’une équipe de 50 aéronefs partis à la recherche d’un avion porté disparu, le Nomad 3503, piloté par l’Avc Clayton Hopton
(également de l’École de pilotage no 1) qui aurait dû revenir à la Base la journée précédente.
Le Nomad 3503 a été retrouvé quelques jours plus tard près d’Everet, non loin de Borden,
le corps de l’Avc Hopton gisant à proximité.
Les tentatives de localiser et de récupérer les deux aéronefs qui étaient entrés en collision
se sont avérées infructueuses jusqu’à la fin du mois de janvier 1941, lorsque le Nomad 3512
a été trouvé dans le lac Muskoka. Après avoir retiré en partie l’aéronef des eaux, il a été possible de récupérer le corps de l’Avc Gosling. Le corps du Sgt Francis ne sera toutefois
récupéré qu’en juin, et on ne découvrira nulle trace du Nomad 3521 ni de l’Avc Bates et du
Capt avn Campbell. Il faudra attendre des décennies avant que de dossier ne progresse, avec
les recherches menées par le groupe LAMP.
En juillet 2012, après avoir inspecté le lit du lac pendant deux étés, l’Équipe de récupération sous marine de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario (PPO) a cru découvrir un aéronef.
Après de nombreuses plongées, la PPO a été en mesure de confirmer qu’il s’agissait bien du
Nomad 3521 après avoir découvert un étui à cigarettes portant l’inscription « Peter Campbell
» et une bague gravée ayant appartenu à Ted Bates.
Plus tôt, cet été, une petite délégation de la 16e Escadre ainsi qu’un représentant de la section de l’identification des victimes de la Direction – Histoire et patrimoine (DHP) se sont
rendus à Guelph pour remettre à M. Tom Bates des effets personnels ayant appartenu à son
frère Ted. Au cours d’une cérémonie discrète, le Lcol Peter Earle, commandant de la 16e
Escadre, lui a remis une bague, un bouton et les épaulettes de pilote que son frère avait
obtenues une journée avant sa disparition et qui n’avaient pas encore été cousues sur son uniforme.
Même si cette cérémonie pourra aider les membres de la famille Bates à tourner la page,
elle ne met pas un terme aux recherches sur l’Avc Bates et sur l’aéronef Nomad 3521. Des
plongeurs de l’unité de plongée de la flotte des Forces canadiennes (Atlantique) se sont rendus du 11 au 17 octobre 2012 au lac Muskoka pour enquêter sur l’épave. Les résultats de
leurs recherches seront annoncés à une date ultérieure.
Plusieurs organisations se sont montrées intéressées à récupérer l’aéronef. Après tout,
l’Aviation royale canadienne n’avait fait l’acquisition que de 32 Nomad en 1940, et aucun
de ces aéronefs n’a été utilisé par l’aviation civile ou exposé dans aucun musée. Les Nomad
ont d’abord été utilisés comme avions d’entraînement avancé au Camp Borden, et les
quelques rares appareils à voir survécu à leurs premières années d’utilisation ont été
reléguées au rôle de remorqueur de cibles.

n Tuesday Oct 16th , the Commander 16 Wing,
Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Earle along with the
16 Wing Flight Safety Officer, Captain Terry
Wong, paid a visit to the Aircraft Maintenance Flight of
the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology
and Engineering (CFSATE). Their mission was to present a Flight Safety “For Professionalism” Award to
Corporal Benoit Hamel.
During the course of familiarization training, Cpl
Hamel, an Avionics Systems (AVS) Technician working
at CFSATE, observed a potential failure with the equipment being used to test aircraft batteries. He identified a
fault in the procedure in place and immediately notified
his supervisor of the potential danger to personnel and
aircraft.
Cpl Hamel’s professionalism, attention to detail and
willingness to go beyond a “that’s how we have always
done it” attitude has led to new, improved Canadian
Forces Technical Orders testing procedures.

Earle, accompagné de l’officier de la sécurité
des vols de l’escadre, le capitaine Terry Wong, visitaient
la section de maintenance des aéronefs à l’Ecole de technologie et du génie aérospatial des Forces canadiennes
(ETGAFC) dans le but de présenter un certificat de professionnalisme en sécurité des vols au caporal Benoit
Hamel.
Lors d’un examen de routine, le Cpl Hamel, un technicien en systèmes avioniques employé à l’ETGAFC, a
remarqué un défaut avec le système de vérification des
batteries de bord des aéronefs. Il a immédiatement identifié le problème et averti son superviseur du danger
potentiel pour le personnel et les aéronefs.
Le professionnalisme dont a fait preuve le Cpl Hamel,
son attention aux détails, et sa volonté de ne pas utiliser
comme excuse, « c’est comme ça qu’on l’a toujours fait,
» ont eu pour résultat une nouvelle procédure améliorée
dans les ordres techniques des Forces canadiennes.

During the event, Halloween
snacks were on hand to help refuel
participants during the rigors of
carving, including a tasty BBQ
lunch. “I was surprised there were
so many kids that came out,” commented Activities Director, MCpl
David Turcotte who is new to the
position. “The kids sound like they
have had fun. They don’t know yet
but we have a little candy bag ready
for them to take so they can leave
with a nice pumpkin and a gift from
the club.” With all the smiling kids,
pumpkin carving was a success. We
hope to see more family fun coming
from the Rod and Gun club. Happy
Halloween!

« Ma citrouille est pour moi une œuvre d’art parce que
je n’ai pas utilisé les pochoirs », a déclaré Brianna
Mollison. « J’ai laissé aller mon imagination. Mon premier
dessin est un visage avec une dent comique, puis il y a une
bouche avec des crocs et j’ai aussi fait une œuvre d’art sur
laquelle j’ai écrit « bouh » et j’y ai fait une chauve souris et
une face de chien, parce que j’aime les chiens. »
Pendant l’activité, des collations à saveur de
l’Halloween ont été servies aux participants afin de leur
donner l’énergie de terminer leur rude tâche. Ils ont également pu déguster de délicieux mets grillés au barbecue à
l’heure du dîner. « J’étais surpris de voir un aussi grand
nombre d’enfants », a affirmé le directeur de l’activité, le
Cplc David Turcotte, en poste depuis peu. « Les enfants
semblent avoir du plaisir. Ils ne le savent pas encore, mais
nous leur remettrons un petit sac de friandises à la fin de
l’activité. Ils repartiront donc avec une belle citrouille et un
cadeau du Club. » À voir les sourires sur le visage des
enfants, l’activité de sculpture de citrouilles a été une réussite. Nous espérons que le Club de chasse et pêche organisera d’autres activités pour la famille. Joyeuse fête de
l’Halloween!

Prince of Peace Catholic School was honored this week for diverting 90.2% of school
garbage to compost or recycling during the 2011-2012 school year. Simcoe County awarded the school with a certificate and an ipad2 for their good work. Left to right Principal

Military Police @ Toronto Police Games

he Toronto Police Amateur Athletic Association
(TPAAA) Police Games were held at the Rogers
Centre in Toronto on October 13th, as the Canadian
Forces Military Police Academy (CFMPA) joined in the competition. Thousands of spectators were present at the event
that demonstrates friendly competition and to encourage sport
for police and the public. The 130th Annual Games, hosted by
CTV Toronto’s Ken Shaw, are held to raise money for the
Toronto Police Widows and Orphan Fund.
The CFMPA QL3 students participated in all of the competitive sporting events coached by CFMPA staff which included
an obstacle course, tug-of-war, and a relay race.
The Games began with the tradition of the march-past, a
parade of Police Officers marching by the crowd, along with a
display of Police vehicles. One of the judges of the march-past
was the Commandant of CFMPA, Major Dandurand.
The students of CFMPA displayed outstanding sportsmanship while participating in these games. The tug of war team
was able to overcome the tough competition of the Toronto
Police, tying the game 1- 1. The team would then move on to
compete against the Toronto Police team in the finals, but
would unfortunately be unable to overpower an experienced
team like the Toronto Police. Both relay and obstacle course
teams displayed impeccable endurance and fought hard, displaying dedication and perseverance towards the games.
The event was fun for the whole family while raising
money for a very special organization, but also encouraging
sportsmanship and camaraderie within the Military Police.

Police militaire des Forces canadiennes (EPMFC) s’est jointe à la compétition.
Des milliers de spectateurs étaient présents à l’activité, une compétition amicale et qui
encourage la pratique du sport auprès de la police et du public. La 130e édition des jeux,
animée par M. Ken Shaw de CTV Toronto, visait, comme par les années passées, à amasser des fonds pour le Toronto Police Widows et le Orphan Fund.
Les stagiaires du NQ3 de l’EPMFC ont pris part à toutes les épreuves sportives compétitives, notamment une course à obstacle, le souque à la corde et une course à relais, et ont
été entraînés par des membres du personnel de l’École.
Le traditionnel défilé a donné le coup d’envoi aux jeux dans le cadre duquel les agents
de police défilent devant la foule. Les spectateurs ont également pu admirer une exposition
de véhicules. L’un des juges du défilé était le commandant de l’EPMFC, le Major
Dandurand.
Les stagiaires de l’EPMFC ont fait preuve d’un esprit sportif exceptionnel durant ces
jeux. L’équipe du souque à la corde a réussi à affronter la vive compétition de l’équipe de
la police de Toronto, lui arrachant ainsi un match nul de 1 à 1. Les deux équipes se sont à
nouveau affrontées en finale, mais l’équipe de l’EPMFC n’a malheureusement pas réussi à
vaincre l’équipe expérimentée de la police de Toronto. Les équipes de la course à relais et
de la course à obstacle ont fait preuve d’une endurance irréprochable. Elles ont mené de
durs combats et ont fait preuve de dévouement et de persévérance tout au long des matchs.
L’activité a été amusante pour toute la famille, elle a permis d’amasser des fonds pour
une organisation très spéciale et elle a également encouragé l’esprit d’équipe et la camaraderie au sein de la Police militaire.

Earlier this month, Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Earle, Commander 16 Wing, accompanied
by Major Leon Hachey the Air Command Academy (ACA) Commanding Officer, and
Chief Warrant Officer Gabriel Chartier ACA Commandant made the following presentations to ACA personnel.

Warrant Officer Stephane Lambert is presented a 1 Canadian Air Division Chief Warrant
Officer Assistant Certificate of Appreciation from Air Command Academy Commandant,
CWO Chartier. WO Lambert received the award for valued service, loyalty and dedication
to the 14 Wing, Greenwood’s dress, deportment, morale and welfare.

Training the trainers
n a previous article entitled Gym Gurus, we discovered the PSP Training Centre and learned the basics
of what they do. For those who missed this, the goal
of the PSP Training Centre is to provide training and development to support PSP in the development and delivery of
fitness training to military personnel. In this article we will
be learning about 2 of the progressive courses given to CF
members at the unit level to make sure that unit fitness programs maintain the same standard available at the base gym.
Basic Fitness Training Assistant (BFTA) and Advanced
Fitness Training Assistant (AFTA) are the first two of 3
courses that are offered directly to CF members only.
BFTA is a two-week beginner course that introduces participants to a basic level of fitness leadership. Participants
learn the fundamentals of leading low risk physical training
(PT) courses: how to effectively warm up and cool down,
good leadership styles, how to effectively control a group,
how to monitor, and how to design a class for different fitness levels and body types. Participants are also able to
assist in military fitness evaluation programs.
The next level AFTA course ran recently at the Buell
Fitness Centre with members attending from Borden as well
as other Ontario bases. This course has similar concepts to
BFTA but teaches more advanced skills, taking PT to the
next level. Participants of AFTA learn physiology, the biomechanics of the body, energy systems functions, and how
to recognizing motor patterns of things they do at work.
Being in the military is a very physical job, and AFTA
teaches the participants to recognize this and see themselves
as an athlete training to do this job. They are taught to recognize specific movement patterns they use during work
hours (throwing pattern, carrying pattern, lifting pattern)
and train these to make sure to optimize performance and
minimize injury potential thus making PT more relevant to
their work functions.
“I have been on this course for about a week, its pretty
good,” commented AFTA participant MCpl Belisoe of CFB
Petawawa. “We’ve learned techniques of how to make our
PT classes better in the military. A lot of military focuses on
running, rucksack marching and the average push-ups, situps and squats, but now the BFTA and the AFTA course
allow us to diversify our training. We can do plyometrics,
speed and agility, kettle bells…there is so much variety now
that we have in our arsenal now to go back to our units.”
AFTA is an intense course taught by PSP Training
Centre’s Aaron Grainge, Duane Farrell, Dan Guimont, and
Jason Branscombe. The participants of AFTA are tested on
their level of fitness the first day. This is a complex course
with more restraints than the BFTA course as participants
are taught to lead PT with minimal items and space. The
course is about being creative, and improvising. They learn
to lead PT on an obstacle course and to assist a tactical athlete program as a teaching/training assistant. Most injuries
in the military come from PT classes, not letting the body
heal and recover between classes or just from having the
wrong form in movements. AFTA participants are qualified
to teach advanced training in a class, coach and recognize
faults with the form of the PT participants and to correct
them, thus decreasing the amount of PT related injury.
“AFTA is interesting and I am learning a ton of safe techniques of training. We are bringing it back to the unit and
bringing it back to train in a fitness PT class to have less
chance of injury, commented Sgt Marilyn McGee of CFB
Borden. “Our technique is better if we get deployed for
everyday use. We take it for granted and then we do the
wrong movements and injure ourselves all the time. It is
(AFTA) really creative, making everyday movements into a
PT class.”
When finished the course, the participants of AFTA are
intended to collaborate with PSP trainers at their base to
remain current and continually augment and progress what
they doing with their unit fitness classes.

passing a weighted bag around their body on a balance
beam and in the background, carrying weighted bags
across the bridge.

militaire. Dans cet article, nous allons vous parler de deux des cours progressifs offerts aux
membres des FC des unités pour veiller à ce que les programmes de conditionnement des
unités conservent un niveau aussi élevé que ceux de la salle d’entraînement de la base.
Le cours de moniteur adjoint d’éducation physique – niveau élémentaire (MAEP-NE) et
le cours de moniteur adjoint d’éducation physique – niveau avancé (MAEP-NA) sont les
deux premiers de trois cours qui sont offerts directement aux membres des FC exclusivement.
Le cours de MAEP-NE est un cours de deux semaines visant à initier les débutants aux
rudiments pour diriger une séance d’entraînement physique. Les participants apprennent les
principes fondamentaux de la direction d’cours entraînement physique (EP) à faible risque
: comment s’échauffer et récupérer efficacement, les bons styles de leadership, comment
contrôler un groupe, comment surveiller et comment concevoir des cours pour différents
niveaux de condition physique et de types physiques. Les participants apprennent également à contribuer aux programmes d’évaluation de la condition physique des militaires.
Un cours du niveau suivant (MAEP-NA) a été offert dernièrement au Centre de conditionnement physique Buell. Des membres de Borden ainsi que d’autres bases de l’Ontario
participaient. Ce cours est axé sur les mêmes concepts que le cours de MAEP NE, mais à
un degré supérieur, poussant l’EP à un autre niveau. Les participants au cours de MAEPNA étudient la physiologie, la biomécanique du corps, les fonctions des systèmes énergétiques et apprennent à reconnaître les schémas moteurs des tâches qu’ils exécutent dans le
cadre de leur travail. Le travail de militaire très exigeant sur le plan physique et le cours de
MAEP-NA enseigne aux participants à reconnaître cet aspect et à se considérer comme des
athlètes qui s’entraînent pour faire ce travail. On leur montre comment reconnaître les schémas de mouvements précis qu’ils adoptent pendant les heures de travail (schémas de lancer,
de porter et de soulever). Ils pratiquent ces mouvements pour en améliorer l’exécution et
réduire les risques de blessure, ce qui améliore l’efficacité de leur EP dans le cadre de leurs
fonctions.
La Cplc Belisoe de la BFC Petawawa affirme qu’elle suit le cours de MAEP-NA depuis
une semaine et qu’elle le trouve très bien. Elle dit avoir appris des techniques pour améliorer les classes d’EP militaire. Selon elle, l’entraînement chez les militaires est surtout axé sur
la course, la marche avec sac à dos ainsi que les pompes, redressements assis et flexions des
jambes habituels, mais que les cours de MAEP-NE et de MAEP-NA permettent de diversifier l’entraînement. Maintenant la plyométrie, la vitesse, l’agilité et les ballons d’entraînement (kettle bells) sont autant d’outils variés qu’elle peut ramener dans son unité.
Le cours de MAEP-NA est un cours intensif dirigé par Aaron Grainge, Duane Farrell,
Dan Guimont et Jason Branscombe du Centre d’entraînement des PSP. La condition
physique des participants est évaluée le premier jour. Il s’agit d’un cours complexe qui est
plus contraignant que le cours de MAEP-NE parce qu’il enseigne aux participants à diriger
des séances d’EP avec un minimum d’accessoires et d’espace. Le cours mise sur la créativité et la capacité d’improviser. Les participants apprennent à diriger une séance d’EP sur un
parcours à obstacles et à agir à titre d’adjoints à l’enseignement/entraînement dans le cadre
d’un programme d’entraînement tactique des athlètes. Dans l’armée, la majorité des
blessures surviennent dans le cadre des cours d’EP, que ce soit parce que le corps n’a pas
eu le temps de récupérer ou de guérir entre les cours ou encore parce que les mouvements
ont été mal exécutés. Les participants au cours MAEP-NA acquièrent les qualifications
nécessaires pour enseigner des cours avancés d’entraînement, pour encadrer, pour repérer
les mauvaises formes de mouvement exécutés par les participants à l’EP et pour les corriger,
réduisant ainsi les blessures liées à l’EP.
Le cours de MAEP-NA est très intéressant selon la Sgt Marilyn McGee de la BFC
Borden, qui dit y avoir appris une tonne de techniques d’entraînement sécuritaires. Elle
ajoute qu’elle ramène ces techniques dans son unité et s’en sert pour s’entraîner dans les
cours de conditionnement physique, permettant ainsi de diminuer les risques de blessures.
Elle affirme que sa technique est meilleure si elle s’en sert tous les jours. À force d’exécuter
leurs tâches sans y penser, les militaires font des faux mouvements et se blessent régulièrement. Le cours de MAEP-NA est créatif et transforme chaque mouvement en séance d’entraînement.
À la fin du cours, les participants doivent collaborer avec les entraîneurs des PSP de leur
base pour se tenir à jour et toujours faire progresser les cours de conditionnement de leur
unité.
QL3 Firefighter Course 0011
pays tribute to the Canadian
fallen fighters
On Sunday September 9th 2012 firefighters from all parts of Canada came to Ottawa to
pay tribute to those Canadian firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. They witnessed the unveiling of the Canadian firefighter’s memorial, a monument intended to pay
tribute to nearly 1100 firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
The ceremony started with a parade of civilian and military firefighters marching from
a nearby park to the fallen firefighter’s monument which is located at the corner of
Wellington and Lett streets in Ottawa. His Excellency the Right Honourable David
Johnson, Governor General of Canada, honoured the nation’s firefighters by thanking them
for their courage and dedication and their willingness to put their own lives at risk to benefit their communities.
Among the firefighters that were participating in the ceremony were the Canadian military firefighter QL3 courses 0011 and 0012 currently training in Borden ON. The 31 candidates along with their instructors traveled to Ottawa to participate in the special ceremony. Each candidate was honoured and proud to show their support for the fallen firefighters
and their families. Although new to the firefighter trade they fully understand how important it is to pay tribute and to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line
of duty. After the parade the QL3 candidates had a little time to talk with some veteran firefighters before loading up in their vehicles and departing for CFB Borden where they would
continue the remainder of their military firefighter training.

MILITARY POLICE UNIT BORDEN ADVISORY
Motorists are reminded to respect the speed limits posted on the roadways of CFB
Borden. This unit has recently received a number of complaints concerning careless and
inappropriate driving around marching troops. Base personnel are reminded that marching troops have priority and those motorists who carelessly drive around marching
troops may be charged under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act or the National Defence
Act. Members are reminded to travel no more than 15 km/h when passing marching
troops.

Le dimanche 9 septembre 2012, des pompiers des quatre coins du Canada se sont
rassemblés à Ottawa pour rendre hommage aux pompiers canadiens morts dans l’exercice
de leurs fonctions. Ils ont assisté à l’inauguration du monument commémoratif érigé à la
mémoire des quelque 1100 pompiers canadiens morts en service.
La cérémonie a débuté par le rassemblement de pompiers civils et militaires dans un
parc tout près, suivi d’un défilé qui s’est terminé au monument commémoratif situé à l’angle des rues Wellington et Lett, à Ottawa. Son Excellence le très honorable David Johnson,
gouverneur général du Canada, a rendu hommage aux pompiers du pays en les remerciant
de leur courage, de leur dévouement et de leur disposition à mettre leur propre vie en péril
dans l’intérêt de leurs communautés.
Les stagiaires qui suivent actuellement, à Borden (Ontario), les cours de pompiers militaires canadiens NQ 3 (no 0011 et no 0012) étaient du nombre des participants à la cérémonie. Trente et un stagiaires accompagnés de leurs instructeurs ont fait le voyage pour
assister à cette cérémonie spéciale à Ottawa. Chacun était honoré et fier de manifester son
soutien aux pompiers morts en service et à leurs familles. Même s’ils sont nouveaux dans
la profession de pompier, ils comprennent bien l’importance de commémorer le sacrifice
ultime de ceux qui ont donné leur vie dans l’exercice de leurs fonctions. Après le défilé, les
stagiaires ont eu un peu de temps pour échanger avec quelques vétérans avant de remonter
dans leurs véhicules et de repartir pour la BFC Borden, où ils termineront leur formation de
pompier militaire.
