9th Belgrade Dance Festival / National Theatre, Belgrade
1
In the time when ballet and dance were facing serious crisis in Serbia, Belgrade Dance Festival made a significant
contribution in re-positioning this art form by recruiting new, young audience and popularizing dance in general, always
presenting choreographic accomplishments of highest artistic level. Festival managed to bridge the gap that was
created by cultural isolation of Serbia in the last decade of 20th century. It presented most significant contemporary
dancers, performers and choreographies, by carefully choosing artistic accomplishments that, each in it’s own way,
achieved continuity and naturally outflowed one from another. In that way audience that went through complex but
unique education in a short period of time was introduced and tied to art of dance. The audiences received a very special
celebration of dance, every April in their city.
Festival also gave a particular artistic impulse to the local artists, both performers and choreographers. It has made a
strong impact on the Serbian contemporary dance scene not only through performances themselves, but also through
meetings with the authors, workshops, exhibitions, video screenings, expert’s discussions and different presentations.
The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia recognized the potential of the Belgrade Dance Festival at the right
moment, and we are confident that Belgrade Dance Festival will successfully carry out its cultural mission for a long time.

Era of New Fairytales
When Aja Jung first told me, “in confidence” of course, and not so long before the event, for which this jubilee and book
take place, with intentions of starting something in Belgrade that has never taken place here before - a big festival of
dance - my first thought was: abandon your juvenile dream. It appeared to be a very high leap, even for the young and
brave, for the people ready for action such as herself. But I was extremely mistaken with my skepticism! Indeed, she
accomplished even more than she was set out to do - I was quickly convinced of this.
During one coincidental meeting, in a totally normal and unexpected place - a tram is where I heard the same story
about the dance festival in Belgrade, as told to me by Nebojsa Bradić, well known theatre director. After this, it was clear
to me that dreams had evolved and this was no longer a laughing matter. Something huge, wonderful and unstoppable
was bound toward the cultural scene of the city. And in just under 6 months, that dream became reality; Belgrade
Dance Festival was presented to the audience. It arrived quietly and quickly; such achievements you do not encounter
frequently here.
1
When it comes to festivals, Belgrade is no orphan; on the contrary it has an abundance of various events. However, the
city was lacking world class dance. Periodically they have been reaching our region. The best were usually “wrapped”
in under different theatre and music festivals, as were not so frequent individual presentations of the dance companies
from abroad. In regards to “The Festival” as it is referred to by those who rejoice it, it arrived filling a gap within Belgrade’s
theatre scene. Today, it is a city with substantially changed vision of performing arts, justly having to thank and without a
doubt the best dance festival in this part of Europe.
Belgrade’s Drama Theatre, a nice and comfortable venue, located in the Vračar area of the city, in the beginning had
been the scene of the largest number of performances, while the glitz and glamour of the festival - such as the opening
and closing performances were accommodated in the all so reliable theatre hall of Sava Center in New Belgrade. After a
short time, the festival established itself throughout the city and beyond. Soon other renowned Belgrade theatres began
opening their doors. It was obvious that it wasn’t just a question of solidarity, in assisting this young new thriving dance
festival, but a genuine expression of hospitality toward artists and performances with creative emblems of a new era,
putting at stake their own reputation and demonstrating openness toward a program which fits into its daily repertoire
profile. It is for certain that the soul and vibrant colors of world class dance is spreading throughout our theatres, and
within the festivals performances, which fall into the high class category. The art of dance also arrived to other Serbian
cities, bringing their audiences closer to the standards of the new ballet and dance repertoire and actual productions.
Throughout the years the numbers in both quantity and quality have expanded for „the biggest dance in Balkans“. It all
started without a lot of fanfare and noise, on tip-toes, with a kind of mixed groups from within the circles of the ballet and
dance world, both big and small troupes. But most importantly was to slowly get the wheels in motion and with this force,
label the new (non)existing movement into a brand name within the modern age of dance in Serbia, a country which
lacked a higher level of contemporary dance professionalism.
Lack of funds also played a key role within the cultural art of dance and prolonged adequate maintenance in quality
for the public. With the arrival of the Belgrade Dance Festival, much of this has changed and evolved. With its positive
vibes, the festival has strengthened vital signs within the scene of local modern dance, and perhaps also influencing
the creation of a new, more demanding audiences. This is especially true among the newer generations, whom upon
new dance horizons have risen. In brief, the festival has taken the creative dance scale to the next, higher level, there’s
no turning back, and this is evident today from a far. The festival is now a brand, recognized by many world renowned
companies whose sleeves had to be pulled in the past, in attempt to convince them to even come over and participate.
But today it’s a different story, as now they openly request to be invited.
Foremost, the festival’s growth has expanded enormously and it has promoted a complete pallet of styles among today’s
dance scene in Europe, and beyond. So far, a decade of this festival characterizes and coincides with a vast variety of
choreographers within the world’s top class. They usually concern and are based on themes of modern man and the
universe within. Among them, there were choreographer’s originating from the East who presented us with their “universal
dance”, an entrance to sensibility and mystical climate of their homeland, thus far exposing new faces less known to the
West. Taking into consideration what has been on display at this festival so far, it is a brief history of contemporary dance.
Even though, these productions are of a newer age, within them you will recognize and associate with performing artists
of the past times, through modern dance presented by pioneer performers and other great artists, whose influence still
remains intact today through the works of the upcoming performing artists of the present. The festival has also brought us
world renown dance companies, with truly remarkable and spectacular performances, as well as lesser known performing
artists from more modest, but nevertheless, superb community dance companies throughout the world.
Today, it seems as if the whole world has danced in Belgrade. The festival’s founder was once told: “we chose a dance
that creates yearning for beauty with love and truth”. To that can be added, the risk was not that great, considering that
quality was always the primary goal. That’s why we ask ourselves today: Who of the great performers of this day and age,
has not yet performed in Belgrade?
And for the end, a bit of personal experience in this adventureous game. If I counted correctly, and I think I have:
throughout all the years of the festivals existence, I have missed and not seen only 3 performances; for two of them I had
justifiable personal reasons! And, of course, I have never regretted all those hours that “dance” has dwelled upon me.
Those same hours understandably, haven’t presented the public with gifted artistic equality, but surely all that time had
not been wasted in vain. We have reached another, the tenth spring season of the great Belgrade Dance Festival, the
miraculous April in Belgrade, as per Jung’s calendar. The new magic awaits us!

Belgrade Dance Festival has no address, or office. There is a million of empty
spaces owned by Belgrade’s Municipality, but nobody ever asked if we might use
one... There is a certain power in philosophy that the performances and artists are

During the years, the Festival got many headlines in international press. Parallely,
few small official recognitions arrived on a local level. Nothing worth to mention. In
Serbia, people and projects are awarded, prized, sculptured and painted after they
are gone. When nothing really counts, but sounds good for the History.

Belgrade Dance Festival is more than Dance. It takes the name of the city all

that did not heard about The Festival in Belgrade. From an unnecessary place, to a
