Butter Churn
by Liana
Mahoney
I wish I had a butter churn,
Like those used long ago.
So in my kitchen I could have
A butter-making show!
I'd show my friends the magic trick
Of turning thick, rich cream
Into sweet butter for my bread A butter-lover's dream!
But when my arms began to ache,
I think I'd stop the show.
For making butter is hard work,
Since churning goes so slow.
I love sweet butter - yes, it's true!
But churning's such a chore.
Instead, I'll put it on my list
And buy some at the store!

Venus Flytrap
by Lill Pluta
It's not my fault I ate that fly.
I’m just a rhizome sprouting up in the spongy Carolina bog.
Not enough nitrogen to keep a long, tall, green thing like me growing...
so, I turned to a life of trickery.
My hinged traps grow in pairs,
green as clover outside, tragic vermilion inside.
Lured by nectar, the six-leggers light,
triggering one.. two.. hairs and...
SNAP!
Poor little bugs.
They thought I’d be their snack
but now they are
mine.
Venus Flytraps
by Lill Pluta
We think of meat-eating plants as something rare and exotic, growing in far away jungles.
However, the Venus Flytrap is native to the bogs of North and South Carolina in the United
States. Collectors have endangered the plants. Now, the plants are grown in greenhouses.
You can even order flytrap bulbs or rhizomes over the Internet. This carnivorous plant from the
Carolinas has become a hot topic for science fair projects.
Venus Flytraps do not get enough nutrients from their native soil. You can think of the insects
they eat as vitamin supplements. A Venus Flytrap’s leaves are shaped like clam shells. Insects
are attracted by the bright red color, but tiny sensitive hairs inside the leaf lay a trap. When
an unfortunate insect bends these hairs, the leaf snaps shut. Then the flytrap oozes fluids that
dissolve the trapped insect, leaving the hard exoskeleton behind.

My Watch
by Liana
Mahoney
I watch you, watch,
My tick-tock watch,
Just to pass the time.
I hear you, watch,
My click-clock watch,
How you tick in time.
I wonder, watch,
My tick-tock watch,
If it is a bore
To just keep time,
That click, tick time,
Forever, ever more?
I'm thinking, watch,
My click-clock watch,
I guess you must feel glee
When you rest, watch,
A stopped-clock watch,
For a dead battery.

These Trees!
by Liana
Mahoney
If walnuts come from walnut trees,
And almonds come from almond trees,
Then how come acorns come from oaks?
Can anyone explain this, please?
A redwood tree’s not really red,
And red pine trees are green, (not red).
So, why’s the white birch aptly named?
And why’s the white pine green instead?
Now, ash trees don’t grow ashes. Right?
And beech trees aren’t on beaches. Right?
And fir trees don’t have furry trunks;
Although, that WOULD be quite a sight!
These trees! These trees! I wish it would
Be less confusing in the wood!
If trees had better-chosen names,
They might be better understood.

The Spelling Bee
by B.J. Lee
Do you know a Spelling Bee?
I know one well, and vow that she
can spell the names of all the flowers
whose sweet nectar she devours.
I took this Spelling Bee with me
and brought her to a spelling bee.
I said, “This way the world can tell
that you, the Spelling Bee, can spell!”
She spelled “Petunia.” Quite divine!
And with “Dahlia” she did fine.
Then she missed both “Thigh” and “Thumb,”
but quickly spelled “Chrysanthemum.”
So I found out that Spelling Bees
cannot spell all words with ease.
For flower names, they spell each one,
but other words? They know none.

Playing Catch
by Liana
Mahoney
She tosses me the ball. I toss it back to Sis.
She throws it really high: “Let’s see you catch this!”
The sun is in my eyes! Where IS that ball now?
I’ve got to spot the ball and catch it somehow.
I’m waiting and I’m waiting. My glove is waiting, too.
I’m looking up, not looking down. I trip on my left shoe.
I’m diving toward the ground. My arms are stretched out straight.
I open up my glove, but I’m afraid that I’m too late.
I can’t believe my eyes. I think I see the ball!
It’s nestled in my glove; I caught it after all!
I hear my sister cheering. She saw my super catch.
But Fido stole the ball from me. He thinks we’re playing fetch!

There’s a dimple in my cheek I think it’s Auntie Sue's And blinking in the mirror
Are Daddy's baby blues.
But no matter how I try,
I simply cannot see If all those parts belong to them,
Then what belongs to me?

Fairy Dance
by Rebecca T. Besser
I saw a fairy dancing in the rain.
It can’t be real, I told my brain.
Spinning and fluttering, dodging drops,
on flower petals she skips and hops.
A magical display of playful grace,
she had a big smile on her face.
Her beautiful, shiny wings twinkled.
As she moved, her purple dress wrinkled.
In her delight she didn’t seem to care,
not even when water dampened her hair.
The sun broke through the clouds overhead,
and light shown down on the flower bed.
The garden sparkled in colorful wonder,
even as the world clapped with thunder.
She jumped at the loud booming sound,
taking cover under a mushroom she’d found.
I blinked and she was there no more.
She’ll be back another rainy day I’m sure.

Desert Flower Power
by Alice Knisley Matthias
Xerophytes are plants that are at their best,
Growing in regions like the dry Northwest.
Desert flowers know how they can survive;
They’ll not only grow, they’re certain to thrive.
Phreatophytes grow roots down deep in the ground,
Making their way until water is found.
Deserts are dry, they’re as hot as can be,
But flowers can grow and even a tree.
Primroses and asters, poppies and lupine,
Live in the desert’s blazing, hot sunshine.
These plants all learned what they needed to know,
To live in a place where others can’t grow.

The Clockatoos are never late.
They always are on time.
But if they’re tardy, it may mean
their clocks have failed to chime.
And when their clocks are broken,

Desert Flower Power
Poem by Alice Knisley Matthias
Personification is when a writer makes a plant, animal or object seem like a human.
Here is one example of personification, from line 3 of the “Desert Flower Power” poem:
Desert flowers know how they can survive.
Of course, desert flowers don't have brains, so they can't really know things. The writer uses the word
know to make the plants seem like they have human qualities.
There is one other line with personification. (Hint: It's in the last 4 lines of the poem.)
Find it, and copy it below.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Explain why the line you copied above is an example of personification.
_____________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________
Read each sentence below. Tell which sentences show personification.
Write personification or not personification on the lines.
1. ______________________________________ The trees were dancing in the wind.
2. ______________________________________ The light was brightly shining.
3. ______________________________________ The water sang as it crashed against the rocks.
4. ______________________________________ My computer died last night.
5. ______________________________________ The wooden table had beautiful shapes carved into it.
Something extra:
Write your own poem about something that is not alive. Include an
example of personification to give it human-like qualities.

2.
Have students use an encyclopedia to look up the words:
primrose, aster, poppy, and lupine
Students can write a sentence or two about each and/or draw them.
3.
Students can write a creative poem about animals that live in the desert.
They could use the style of “Desert Flower Power” as a template.
4.
Many department stores, grocery stores, and nurseries sell small cactus plants for only a
few dollars. Purchase one for your classroom. Have students take care of it. They
could also write a descriptive paragraph to describe it.
If you do bring a cactus into the classroom, have students predict what the roots will be
like. (Will they be shallow or deep?) Then, put on some thick garden gloves and
carefully pull it out of the pot to check their hypothesis.
5.
Have students use an atlas or other reference material to find the largest deserts in the
world. Students can make a list of their names and locations. You may also want to
have them list the annual rainfall or average summer temperature.
