Dear NES community,
To the world
The 6th grade has done a unit on Africa, and I think that everybody was moved by the levels of poverty in the region. I started to look into all the facts, and websites that do charity
for the hunger problems in Northern Africa, and if you go to www.heifer.org you can give
food to those who need it. Here are a few facts that really moved me:

Some 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active
life. That's about one in nine people on earth.

Curriculum News: 2nd Grade
Ms. Mollineaux, Ms. Shorey, & Ms. Williamson
Second graders have set sail around the world with the beginning of our ancestry unit. Students have been learning
more about the people in their family trees, and what countries their relatives lived in before immigrating to the United
States. We've discovered that everyone's ancestors came from some other nation, no matter how many years ago! This
home-school collaboration features research on the flags, landmarks, customs, history, foods, dance, music, sports, and
games of countries around the world. We are addressing many standards in History/Social Science, as well as English/
Language Arts; for example, second graders are learning to use the features of nonfiction text to easily locate key facts
and information about the countries of their ancestors. Our young researchers' hard work will be on display for second
graders' families and friends at Ancestry Sharing Day on April 14th.
2nd Grade Art by Ms. Merluzzi
Second grade students have created beautiful fruit bowl paintings. First, they had to learn the concept of over lapping to
draw crowded fruit. Then, they learned about primary and secondary colors. They were given only the primary colors to
paint their fruit bowls. Now they are experts at making secondary colors! Second grade students also had a chance to
work with clay and formed small clay mice!
Radial symmetry was the theme when printing with found objects. Those radial designs will become turtle shells once
fins, heads and tails are added.
Please come see these as well as other projects by all the students at NES. They will be on display at THE N.E.S. ALL
SCHOOL ART EXHIBIT on April 14th from 6-8pm. Large reproductions of famous artist Henri Rousseau will also be on
display courtesy of the P.T.A.

The Book Fair is Here!
Book Fair dates: Monday 4/11/16 - Wednesday 4/13/16

The All School Arts Festival will also be held on Thurs. 4/14 from 6:00-8:00 P.M.
All classes will visit the Book Fair during their scheduled library class,. Friday classes have been scheduled to a different time during the week. Please see the SignUp Genius Link for the schedule and volunteer opportunities by clicking

Families are also welcome to visit during after school hours and Family Night. Purchases help support the library by
adding new books and resources to the collection. If you are unable to attend the Fair in person, we invite you to visit
our online Book Fair by clicking HERE. Our online Fair is available from 4/7/16 to 4/18/16.
During Book Fair week, students and other visitors will have the opportunity to choose books to bring home to their
own home library. We talk about choices every day in library, specifically finding a book that fits, that will interest, and
lead to other reading choices. It is empowering for a young reader when they are able to choose the books that will become part of their own home library. Children’s Author, Cynthia Lord, recently wrote how adults can help foster this
power of choice to develop an enthusiasm for life long readers. You can read her post HERE.
Students love the Book Fair and the excitement as they select a book is contagious! Thank you for your support. We
look forward to seeing you and your family at the Book Fair!
5th Graders Visit Council on Aging
This week Ms. Lapham’s 5th graders visited the Council on Aging as part of Ms. Brown’s library class. This is part of
an oral history/local history project that uses primary sources. A special thanks to our local senior citizens for sharing
their knowledge and experience with our students!

Newbury Town Library
The Friends of the Newbury Town Library are hosting our First Annual Paint Nite Fundraiser on Thursday, May 12th,
at Michael's Harborside in Newburyport (7-9pm).
We are a 100% run volunteer organization primarily focused on raising money to support existing and offer new programs & services at Newbury Town Library and to enrich the community.
At our Paint Nite, a master artist will give us step-by-step instructions to create a work of beach themed art – while we
socialize and sip cocktails.
The cost is $45.00 per ticket and Paint Nite will donate $15.00 of each ticket sale to the Friends.
