FROM THE PASTOR’S GARDEN
“Allergia non Allegria”
People have asked occasionally (and politely ),
“Father, how is your garden this year?”
Since it is a much longer story than polite
inquirers want to hear, I say one of three things:
“Fine.”
“No Topsy-Turvy tomatoes
this year” or
“The squirrel is back!”
Actually, I’d rather not mention the squirrel.
There are worse “critter control” problems like
deer, raccoons, and skunks! For a short time, a
pair of hawks patroled our back lot and the
squirrels and rabbits went into hiding. Now the
hawks are gone and the “critters” are back!
I am pleased with my Miracle-Grow enhanced
impatiens and tomatoes. But the cucumbers
must be a “mutant” varietal strain and crab grass
and mint are, as ever, indestructible!
What was new this year? Roses! I think no
garden is complete without roses. But there have
been problems- - Japanese beetles, black spots
and (on a personal level) “ACCIDENTS”.
Sometimes I forget that, for as long as I can
remember, I have had fierce allergic reactions. If
you suffer from allergies, you know how
difficult it can be to do normal things. Since I
am new to gardening, I was far too optimistic
and naive.
In July I bought a beautiful red rose plant. As I
carefully placed it in my car, the plant slipped

and with its sharp thorns, slashed my arm. I did
my best to wrap my arms and medicate it as soon
as possible. The reaction was unbelievable! I
developed a rash that resembled “poison ivy.”
After receiving the right prescription, the rash
was completely cured.
Much to my horror, it happened again. I was
trying to eliminate “black spotted” leaves from
my roses. This time my right hand was slashed
by thorns. My efforts to forestall a severe
reaction failed. The result proved to be worse
than before.
I do not intend to give up on gardening or roses.
I am about to order gardening gloves that are
“guaranteed thorn proof.” They are “machine
washable and won’t ever crack or peel.” Of
course, there are no such “guarantees” for this
amateur gardener.
Allergies are definitely no joy (Allergia non
Allegria)! I once asked my dermatologist about
another extreme reaction:
“Doctor, what causes this?”
His response was:
“YOU DO!”
That was not a very comforting response! All
that sneezing, those rashes and respiratory
distress- -how do I cause that? If you are an
allergy sufferer in the extreme, take your
medication and, above all, BEWARE OF
ACCIDENTS! On this issue, “Father knows
best.”
As a kind of postscript, I will also admit I have a
long standing allergy to horses. I sneezed all the
way around the lakes of Killarney in a jaunting
cart. Far worse, I had to leave a magnificent
performance of Austria’s champion Lipizzan
stallions. It was either that or stop breathing.

SPIRITUAL LIFE
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process of prayer, reflection, study and discussion for individuals
who have never been baptized; who are baptized Christians but who seek to learn more about the Catholic
Church; or who are baptized Catholics but have not received First Communion and Confirmation.
Sessions will be on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in the Religious Education Office beginning today. Please
share this information with people you think might be interested. Sometimes all a person needs is to be asked
if they’d like to learn more about Jesus and/or the Catholic Church. Please call Dee Stanton or Joyce Mills at

AN INVITATION TO OUR YOUTH
To give glory to God, support the prayer of the faith community and assist the priest at Mass is what Altar
Server Ministry is all about. All students who are in Gr. 4 or older are invited to prayerfully consider if serving
our parish in this way is a way for them to share their time and their gifts. Training for new Altar Servers will
take place Monday, October 4, 18 and 25, at 5:30 p.m. in church. Those who are in the RE Program will be
done in time to go to class at 6:45 p.m. All students should eat dinner before coming for practice. Newly
trained Altar Servers will be put on the Server Schedule beginning in November. An information letter and
permission slip, to be signed by the parent/guardian and the student will be given out to interested youth
during Religious Education class this Monday. Students who attend Catholic school may call, or stop by the
RE Office, to receive a copy of the letter and permission slip. The RE Office number is 847/966-1180. Several
of our Altar Servers have begun college and we truly have a need for new Servers! Thank you for thinking
and praying about this invitation to share in the Mass in a new way!
40 DAYS FOR LIFE
Join us in the Archdiocesan wide --40 DAYS FOR LIFE CAMPAIGN
Some people remark “It’s too little, too late” when parishes try to make their voices heard by our government
officials regarding whatever will protect the sanctity and dignity of human life. But a difference can be made
and it has and we must continue to proclaim the Gospel of Life!
The time is fast approaching when we, as Catholics and members of St. Isaac Jogues and St. John Brebeuf
parishes, can make another difference by participating in the “40 Days For Life” campaign. In addition to
individual prayer and fasting and learning more about life issues, our two parishes will pray in front of Albany
Medical-Surgical Center (a late term abortion facility), 5086 N. Elston Avenue in Chicago, on the feast day of
our North American Martyrs: Tuesday, October 19th from Midnight to Midnight.
Sign-up in the in the Holy Family Room begins next weekend, September 18-19. When you sign up for an
hour, you will receive an information sheet regarding our day of prayer. Participants commit to conducting
themselves peacefully and prayerfully and to show respect for all people and property.
Please remember that you may go to the facility to pray any time from September 22-October 31; however,
St. John Brebeuf and St. Isaac Jogues Parishes have the responsibility to cover October 19th. For more

RE NEWS
*Kindergarten Religious Education class begins TODAY. Open House will be at 10 a.m. in the classroom,
followed by the session at 10:30 a.m.
*Families who have not yet registered for the Religious Education Program need to do so now! Classes have
begun. The next class for Grs. 1-Confirmation Year II is Monday, September 13. Please call the Religious
Education Office, 847/966-1180.
*Sixth Grade students will receive their Bible in class Monday night, along with a letter for parents/guardians.
This Bible will be needed for class the next three years.
*Confirmation Year II Families have a meeting next Monday, September 20th, at 6:45 p.m. in the Holy Family
Room to look at this year’s preparation. At least one adult is expected from each family. Please remember to
bring the completed Sponsor Information Sheet. We will be writing the sponsors soon after. Candidates are to
go to class at the usual time that night. They will join us later in the meeting.
BIBLE STUDY
Bible study has resumed on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. in Room 6 of the school (enter through Holy
Family Room). The first book we are focusing on is the Book of Psalms. This is a time of study and faith
sharing. No prior Bible Study experience is required. The cost for materials is $10, however, if finances are

SPRED NEWS
The SPRED Community, assisted by some members of the Men’s Club, will participate in the Knights of
Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive on Friday-Saturday, September 17-18. We’ll be collecting donations at the Four
Flags Jewel. These monies will then be distributed to many programs and organizations which service those
who are intellectually challenged, as we do through SPRED. Whether or not you are able to donate, please
be sure to stop and say “hello”!

HUMAN CONCERNS
Rainbow Hospice Volunteer Training To Be Offered
Rainbow Hospice & Palliative Care is a non-profit, community based organization that provides comfort &
support to people who are facing a terminal illness. Volunteers help in giving that support to their patients &
families. Rainbow’s fall Patient Care Training, offered in three parts, will be held Sat., Sept. 25 from 9A to 2P,
Wed., Sept. 29 from 6-9P & Sat., Oct. 2 from 9A to 2P. Patient Service volunteers must attend all sessions.

September – National Preparedness Month
Part 2 – Make a Plan
What would you do if a tornado ripped through your community? What if there was a flood or hazardous
materials spill? Having supplies at the ready for an emergency or disaster is only one part of the “preparation”
process. One also needs a plan. Here are things to do/ consider:
+ Have a family meeting. Talk about the type of emergencies you could expect. Consider how you would
prepare for & respond to each. Start off working out your plan for one “event,” like a house fire, & then move
on to preparing for others. Decide what each person is to do. Make a list & put it where everyone can see &
read it often.
+ Plan a meeting place in case you get separated. If the emergency is a fire at home, decide where to
meet outside so you know everyone is safe/ accounted for. If the event forces you away from home, arrange
to meet at a location & choose an out-of-area emergency contact person. Let that person know what has
happened. If local phone lines are jammed or down, try text, e-mail or long distance.
+ If you have to evacuate, decide what you will do. Identify a place or places where you could go. You
might choose family, friends or a motel. If the emergency requires many people to move, you may have to go
to a shelter. Find out where they are located.
Keep pets in mind & plan how they can be cared for if you have to leave home. Practice home evacuation
twice a year & do the same for leaving your home & going to another location. The American Red Cross
suggests, too, you identify emergency routes out of your community & plan alternate roads to take in the
event that one is blocked.

What is normative in the practice of the Church
is that there be separate individual Masses

regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues
Parish.

ST. ISAAC JOGUES MEN’S CLUB
We need YOU, new members, as well as current members, to renew your membership! This year, St.
Isaac Jogues Men’s Club will celebrate our Fifty-first year. Our membership is dwindling, and we
need some young men to be interested and join us.
The first meeting, our yearly celebrated “Kick Off Dinner” will be on Thursday
evening, September 16th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Church Hall. Steak, corn on the cob, baked
potato, salad, dessert and liquid refreshments will be served. The annual dues, the cost
for the Kick off Dinner and the next seven monthly meetings are $35.00.
Our monthly Men’s Club Meeting is the third Thursday of each month. We have wonderful group
conversations, some men participate in games of darts and poker. The Men’s Club also has trips to
Cubs and Sox baseball games and Wolves hockey games.
So all men, come and join us each month for a relaxing evening out!

ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST
It has always been the policy of St. Isaac Jogues to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those parishioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they
are made available to us.
However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and
certainly by other parishes.
We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without
their permission.
We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is
ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no
longer accept names in this manner.
We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list.
Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of
their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a
member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records.
Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the
opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
