Hair and makeup artist Tony Masciangelo, co-owner
of Toronto’s Alcorn Salon, has been in the beauty
business for two decades and travelled the world
to work for Glamour, ELLE and Vanity Fair as well as
on faces like Taylor Swift and Kim Cattrall. In this
issue, he worked his magic on our fashion shoot,
“Electric Avenue” (pg. 68). “I enjoyed playing with

real,” he says. Follow him on Instagram @thealcorn.

issue she interviewed Cake Beauty’s Heather Reier
for Beauty Crush (pg. 28). “It was like chatting with
an old friend—one who’s incredibly smart, ambitious
and motivated,” she says. “I left feeling energized and
inspired.” Johnson (@msgabriellej) has also written

Alvaro Goveia shot the

“We had a day filled with sequins, sparkle and glitter,

Since there is no hibernating when it
comes to winter beauty, here are my
tried-trusted-and-true survival products.
(left to right) Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream
Intensive Lip Repair Balm, $29. Chapped lips are
the bane of my beauty existence, and this balm helps
me keep ’em in check. Clinique Moisture Surge
Overnight Mask, $41. My parched skin drinks up all
the moisturizing benefits this overnight mask offers.
Chanel Lamé Rouge Noir Top Coat, $31 (available
at select beautyBOUTIQUE by Shoppers Drug Mart
locations). Sure, this shimmery yet sheer top coat
elevates any polish, but when applied to my bare
nails, it instantly pulls my look together.
ON THE COVER
Unsurprisingly, it mostly has to do with food (the
quality of ingredients more than the portion size).
As a child, I remember requesting steak for breakfast
on more than one occasion, only to be met with

know me or follow my Instagram feed,
this admission probably comes as

no surprise——though I’’m careful not
to wear the self-indulgent label, as that
implies no restraint.

I enjoy meaningful social media time by applying the quality vs. quantity
approach; and I’’ve started dipping into my collection of someday beauty

brighten my mood
For some, I realize that reading this magazine from cover to cover is
an indulgent act in its own right——so thank you. For others it may be
something meaningful like charity work or a donation (this always provides
me with immense joy). It could even be something as simple as a bubble
bath, and that’’s perfectly OK. During the busy holiday season, being
mindful of the pleasurable things at your disposal can be the last box to
check off on your to-do list. With that in mind, we’’ve assembled some
My latest binge-listen:
stories you’’ll hopefully relish as much as we do.
Crybabies podcast
Kicking off the indulgent theme is a thoughtful prole on Heather
Reier, Canadian founder of the aptly named Cake Beauty, whose brilliant
idea of bottling decadent beauty products paid off (page 28). Since you can’’t talk about
pampering without mentioning beauty products, we’’ve got tons of festive beauty
ideas in our By the Numbers feature (page 34) and in ““That’’s Rich”” (page 53), as well as
indulgences of the mind/body/health variety on page 79.
There were many laugh-out-loud moments while we were producing this year’’s gift
guide, in which staffers share what they’’d like to give and receive this holiday season.
The super talented Joanna Kam, our very own associate art director, perfectly captured
staffers’’ personalities through caricatures. See for yourself on page 42.
If there’’s one story not to miss, it’’s the head-nodding piece on handling holiday stress
like a boss (page 88). Its main goal? To raise awareness around and support mental
health, which, frankly, is a subject that could always use more attention.
Here’’s to a new year of stockpiling simple pleasures and taking care of you.

LETTER OF THE MONTH
“Night Rider” really touched a nerve for me,
because I too suffer from “bad sleep” and I know
first hand the toll it takes on overall health and the
natural beauty that comes from a good night’s
sleep. I cannot blame raising young children or
a challenging work schedule, I just can’t seem
to get more than three hours of uninterrupted
sleep. I loved Jacquelyn Francis’s statement
about wanting to wake up feeling pretty and her
solution—adopting a beauty routine that works
for her. Thank you, Jacquelyn, for the awesome
tips. Here’s to beautiful dreams.
- Nicoletta, Markham, Ont.
I love this magazine! Each page offers up some
magical new insight. The tips and tricks—from
the proper way of applying gel nail polish to
the tools to help a home hair dye job turn out
looking more professionally done to the right
age-appropriate foundation and application
method—are fantastic. We lead such busy
and hectic lives, and leafing through these
pages gives us pause to focus on ourselves for
a beautiful moment. - Laura, Niagara on
the Lake, Ont.
I particularly liked the “score” for economical
products and the “splurge” for more expensive
items. It was a super idea to feature Trends as
we change seasons and want to search for fall
fashions, etc. Thanks! I will watch for your next
edition. - Janet, Orleans, Ont.
The Trend Alert thumbnails were a nifty
touch in the most recent issue of Glow. They
informed me about trends which I otherwise
would not have known about. Wearing pastels
during autumn? Peach and melon eyeshadows
and lipstick at this time of year? Interesting!
-Janelle, Edmonton
The Yukon is gorgeous, one of my favourite
places on Earth, and after spending eight years
living in the Territory, it made me really happy
to see a photo editorial done there. Thank you
for bringing my memories back to me and
going off the beaten track for this shoot.
- Andrea, Calgary
I absolutely love Glow! I’m not a big fan of
makeup, but I find so many useful tips on
skincare and the best products and fragrances
that I simply must have. I also love to travel, and
your recent Glow Travels article on the Yukon
left me completely inspired. I’m in the process
of booking my trip for 2016. Your tips on where
to explore and eat are a must-have! Thank you
Glow! - Veronica, Ottawa

Earlier this month, my daughter left for
university. Wondering what to place in her first
care package, I read Body Talk’s “Face Off” and
filled the package with all the Fixes mentioned
in the article. I then added my well-read copy of
Glow, as the two of us always enjoyed reading
it together. My daughter loved the package
and Skyped me to enjoy October’s Glow again
together. - Tami, Ottawa
In your recent issue you featured an article
entitled Beauty by the Numbers. The
introduction stated, “Here’s how to put your
best base forward at every age.” The article
then provides skin strategies for each decade
up to the 50s. Considering that the average life
expectancy for women in Canada is 84, why
did the article not address the later decades?
Women aged 60 and up still want to look their
best—they’re not dead yet! Just look at Meryl
Streep, Helen Mirren and Sophia Loren, for
example. - Barbara, Thornhill, Ont.

Ask any woman on the street what her desert island must-have is and chances are
she’’ll say mascara. Lucky for us, mascaras are the Madonna of beauty products,
constantly reinventing themselves. Whether you’’re after a lush fringe or a super curl,
here are three new wands you won’’t want to leave the house without.
For über-length: Revlon
Ultimate All-In-One
Mascara, $14
For a full, falsie-worthy
flutter: L’Oréal Paris
Voluminous Superstar
Mascara, $17
For the ultimate curl:
Rimmel London 24HR
Super Curler Mascara, $10
While this multi-tasking tube
checks off a laundry list of
wants (including definition
and lift), it’s the length for
days it delivers that we can’t
get enough of.
This double-ended wand has a
thickening primer on one end
and a lengthening topcoat on
the other. The results mimic the
fanned-out effect you get from
individual false lashes.
This may cause a breakup
with your eyelash curler. With
a curved brush and a curlinducing formula that was
10 years in the making, this
wand coats every single lash
for an eye-framing fringe.

HEATHER REIER
BAKER’S DELIGHT: Reier began her sweet beauty concoctions in
her kitchen before taking them out into the real world.
SOMETIMES IT’’S HARD to remember what the
world was like before Instagram, before the Hermès
Apple watch, before artisanal coffee shops cropped
up on every corner and kale became cool enough to
warrant its own must-have sweatshirt.
But that was the world——way back in 2003——into
which Cake Beauty, a Canadian line of adorably
packaged beauty products with natural ingredients,
was born. It hardly seems groundbreaking now,
accustomed as we are to studying labels like we’’ll be
tested later and stocking our fridges with fresh veggies
from organic produce-box subscriptions, but 12 years
ago, the concept was a revelation.
““To me, it was a no-brainer in the marketplace,””
says Heather Reier, Cake’’s founder and CEO, over
loose-leaf green tea at Boxcar Social, a new (you
guessed it) artisanal coffee shop near her east Toronto
ofce. At 41, Reier is a tall, blonde, model-like mother
of two young boys. Her glowing skin is accentuated
with minimal makeup; she’’s basically a living,
breathing ad for her brand. ““The whole idea of great
body products that had natural ingredients, that had
a playful feel, and that all the magazines and celebrities
loved was important to me, and nothing existed then,”” she says.
Reier was working in retail operations for Roots Canada at the
time, sitting a mere 20 feet away from the ofce of its co-founder,
Michael Budman (““the epitome of Canadian entrepreneurship””),
and apparently his spirit was contagious. Taking matters——or, more
specically, shea butter and coconut oil——into her own hands, she
learned how to make lotion with knowledge gleaned from books
28 GLOW WINTER 2016
(actual books!) and the web and began
whipping up Cake Beauty prototypes
in her own kitchen.
Like many other wish-I’’d-thoughtof-that genius ideas, Reier took an
everyday product and gured out how
to make it sexy and covetable. ““I would
go to the farmers’’ market all the time,
buy a big Mason jar of shea butter and
slather it on,”” she says. ““It smelled horrendous and [it was] packaged
horribly, but there was something decadent about it that I loved.””
The natural-beauty market existed in isolation at the time, says
Reier. ““It was still really attached to a super-kitschy feel, a farmers’’
market sensibility: ‘‘I’’m a natural product and I’’m beige, and I do
great things and I smell like hemp,’’”” she says, while luxury beauty
companies shied away from using natural ingredients. ““I bridged
the two ideas.””
With her strong business background (she managed a national
account for a chain of department-store hair salons straight out of
university) and marketing savvy, Reier understood the need for a real
hook. ““I wanted Cake to live beside brands owned by P&G. I had to
come up with a strategy that was going to get me out there and get
some attention without the money,”” she says. ““The celebrity aspect
was important. We were at the height of a very specic celebrity
culture. At the time, it wasn’’t as saturated as it is today. If someone
really loved a product, it made a huge difference, and people
listened to that.””
Reier reached out to a number of celebs, including Kate Hudson,
Naomi Watts, Debra Messing and Rihanna, and the response was
overwhelmingly positive. ““It validated what I was doing,”” she says.

“[Celebrities] get so many things sent to them, so to get
feedback like, ‘Wow, this is my favourite product, I love
it,’ mattered.” Imagine trying to do that now, when
even bloggers—never mind Hollywood stars—get paid
mega-bucks for a single Insta-endorsement.
Reier spent a few years carving out a niche, supplying
body lotions and hand creams to independent boutiques
and online retailers which would quickly sell out of the
celeb-approved goods. “My story is very different from
most in this industry,” she says. “I started in the kitchen
with, ‘Hi, I’ve got a lotion, do you want to buy it?’ I was
very grassroots for a long time. Today, you couldn’t start
a brand that way. It’s too competitive. You need to get on
the scene quickly.”
But it was that indie vibe that made Cake a best-selling
year alone and eventually propelling it to international success. Today,
the line is carried in 2,500 Canadian stores (like Murale) and roughly
4,500 worldwide, with dry shampoos like Satin Sugar and Rush
!
Never one to rest on her laurels—“I feel like the minute you take
your foot off the gas to pat yourself on the back is the moment you
lose that hunger,” she says—Reier set her sights on supermarket
beauty, launching Delectable in 2012. The ultra-affordable collection
of hair and body products was spawned from an economic downturn
and shifting consumer buying habits.
“People were more sensitive to price, but the expectation never
changed. It was like, ‘I want a product for $12, but I want it to be
just as good as my $24 product,’” she says. “It was a gut feeling.”
Delectable was an instant hit, and is now stocked at major retailers
like Shoppers Drug Mart.
So what’s next for the forward-looking CEO? Skincare, for one
our bathroom cabinets with Cake Beauty face creams if Reier has her
way, while Delectable will expand into the lifestyle category with baby
products and hand soaps.
Considering her impeccable business timing, Reier seems to have
a crystal ball tucked in her back pocket, one she might eventually
use to reinvent the wheel once again. When asked if she’ll continue on
“Like until I’m in the old-age home? No. I have a lot of interests,”
she says. And though her demeanour is serene as she sips the last of
her tea, it’s clear that Reier’s brain is churning out new ideas a mile
a minute—and that Cake and Delectable are just the beginning.

PARTY TRICKS
Whether you’re the hostess or on the guest list, these red
carpet-worthy beauty looks are guaranteed to win you
compliments. BY MEGAN KIRKWOOD
FESTIVE MAKEUP——METALLIC highlighters, red lipsticks and sparkly, smoky shadows——always seems like
a total no-brainer until you crack open one of those gorgeous palettes and realize you have no idea what to do
next. Skip the guesswork this season (there’’s already enough of that at this time of year) and follow these easy
steps for a knock-em-dead look that will take that trusty little lace number to the next level come cocktail hour.
GIGI HADID
30s
OLIVIA WILDE
TRY THIS: Monochromatic makeup
MAKE IT HAPPEN: Soft, all-over colour is the perfect complement to
an already plump complexion (if you’’ve got it, aunt it). ““Go for
a monochromatic look and soft denition everywhere——because
everything is already dened and plump, it’’s really going to let your
face speak for itself,”” says Maxime Poulin, international makeup
artist for Guerlain. Since it’’s all about skin, prep with a good
moisturizer and an essential oils-infused foundation to boost your
natural glow. Your secret weapon: a cream-based blush or multipurpose colour applied with your ngers. Pick a rosy shade if you’’re
on the fair side, or peachy hues with gold undertones if you have
a warmer skin tone. You can really diffuse the colour in a large area
on your cheeks for a sexy, ushed appearance, which will enhance
the volume in your face, explains Poulin. Next, place the colour
directly onto your browbones, leaving the skin on your eyelids and
just under your brows bare.
PAIR IT: Use your ngers to dab the same creamy colour onto your
lips. Finish off with a highlighter, either on your bare eyelids or on
the top of your cheekbones, to make them pop. Skip ultra-shimmery
nishes, which can easily look over-the-top. Less iridescence means
you can always add more shimmer later, but you can’’t always take
it away, says Rachel Goodwin, an L.A.-based makeup artist who
counts Emma Stone and January Jones as regular clients.
TRY THIS: Graphic liner
MAKE IT HAPPEN: Ditch the heavy, smoky shadow——which can be
the equivalent of I-haven’’t-slept-in-days——in favour of bold liner.
““[This look] can be very glamorous if you wear it with a lip, or
played down if you wear it alone. It’’s versatile and looks good
on all eye shapes,”” says Goodwin. Ace the application by using
a creamy formula (it’’s the most forgiving) with a stiff, angled
eyeliner brush, or a pointed kajal-style pencil. Poulin recommends
matching the thickness of your liner with the natural attributes of
your face: Full lips, cheeks and brows can withstand heavily lined
eyes, while more petite features stand out better with thinly drawn
lines. If you fancy a cat eye, create the upturned ick by lining up
with the angle of your cheekbone and following your bottom lash
line as a foolproof guide to a natural-looking slant. Want to avoid
black? Navy and green are both options, says Goodwin, as long as
you keep the shape clean and elegant.
PAIR IT: Match your dramatic gaze with a soft, radiant lip and
cheek in pink or coral so the nal look reads modern, not vintage.
““Since the liner is only adding denition to your lash line, it’’s
also important to frame your eyes by lling in your brows to add
balance,”” says Poulin.

MONICA BELLUCCI
TRY THIS: Bright, bold lips
MAKE IT HAPPEN: A bold lipstick makes as much of a style statement
as an LBD. ““Strongly [coloured lips] will brighten and lift
your entire face,”” says Poulin, who suggests pairing them with
bold brows to help atter and dene your face shape. Choose
a smooth texture to prevent the attening effect that mattenish lipsticks can have. Start with a primer to  ll in any ne
lines on and around your mouth and prevent your colour
from bleeding. If you have a less pronounced lip shape, ll it in
with a waterproof lip pencil in nude or a matching shade, which
will also help your colour fade more evenly throughout the
night, says Goodwin. Dab the liner softly with your nger to get
a slightly blurred effect instead of a ““stamped on”” lip look, which
can look too unnatural. Then apply your lipstick, either from
the bullet or with a brush, blot with a tissue and reapply. ““A hint
of gloss in the centre captures the light and gives the illusion of
a fuller lip, especially in photos,”” says Goodwin.
PAIR IT: Use a deep chocolate eye pencil applied as close to the
base of your lash line as possible. If you have black hair, go
ahead and use a jet-coloured pencil. ““If there’’s a bit of red in
your brown, it can make your eyes look tired, so choose a nice
dark, ashy brown,”” suggests Poulin.
TRY THIS: Ultra-highlighted skin
MAKE IT HAPPEN: Add dimension and help your skin reect
light by swapping opaque colours for softer, subtler hues.
Highlighting the planes of your face has a lifting effect,
explains Poulin. Look for sheer highlighter shades in the rose
gold and champagne family for a halo-like appearance. Soft,
ne pigments will add warmth to your overall colour, which
becomes greyer as you age, he says. Prime skin with a formula
that will hydrate and colour correct, making the nal look
appear fresher. Apply the highlighter between your brows, up to
the centre of your forehead and down to the bridge of your nose.
This really works to disguise frown lines and lift your whole face,
says Poulin. Avoid placing it along your browbone, or on the
lower part of your nose. Finish with a rosy blush. ““In your 50s,
cream formulations are your friend,”” says Goodwin. ““Dab it on
the apples of your cheeks with your ngers and blend it in to give
a beautiful life to your skin and make you look awake and fresh.””
PAIR IT: Skip the heavy eyeliner, but top up mascara and add
a few individual lashes to help disguise thinning hairs. Layer
the most on the outer corner of your eye to make your lashes
appear thicker and fuller, says Poulin.

ASK A BEAUTY EXPERT
Q: What’s the best way to remove my heavy makeup?
A: Start with a makeup remover that works on all skin types like Bioderma Sensibio H20 Makeup Removing
Micelle Solution ($27 for 500 ml), says Lysa Estay, a beautyBOUTIQUE manager at Shoppers Drug Mart
in Toronto. Once you’ve taken off your makeup, lather up with an extra-strength cleanser like Clarins ExtraComfort Anti-Pollution Cleansing Cream, $44, which will whisk away any remaining dirt and oil from the skin.

CONFESSION
what gives? Even though we tend to think of acne as something that
checks out for good once you hit legal drinking age, it’’s actually quite
common in adult women: one in ve between the ages of 25 and 45
suffers from the condition.
In many cases, our hormones are the culprits (a spike in
testosterone before menstruation kicks our oil glands into overdrive,
resulting in clogged pores and, you guessed it, pimples). ““The location
of the acne usually suggests that it’’s a hormonal problem,”” explains
Dr. Ben Barankin, medical director and founder of the Toronto
Dermatology Centre and spokesperson for the Acne and Rosacea
Society of Canada, over the phone. They crop up in the same telltale
areas, like the lower jawline and
neck. I nod vehemently (he can’’t see
me, but I can’’t help myself). This is
exactly what I’’m experiencing: the
super-attractive ““acne goatee,”” as
my friend Emily calls it. ““Another
feature of hormonal acne is that
it ares up consistently at the
same time——before your period,””
Barankin continues. I keep nodding.
My pimples predictably appear
along with other PMS symptoms
like bloating and chocolate cravings.
The real kicker is that as I near my mid-30s, I’’m also noticing early
signs of aging like ne lines and sunspots. This is all the more reason to
get my acne under control, insists Barankin. ““Inammatory acne
breaks down your collagen further, which is why you get divots and
scars, but also wrinkles.”” If that isn’’t a call to arms, I don’’t know what is.
I heed his advice and beef up my at-home arsenal with some
heavy-duty products (FYI: glycolic acid, salicylic acid and benzoyl
peroxide are a triple threat when it comes to zit-zapping).
I incorporate a new toner, NeoStrata’’s Acne Clear Clarifying Solution,
into my daily routine, and after several uses my skin looks smoother
and my red spots less angry, thanks to a one-two punch from glycolic
acid and salicylic acid. I feel like I sort of have things under control……
until a huge pimple emerges on the left side of my face.
I wish I were exaggerating for the sake of a good story, but I’’m
not. My loved ones assure me ““it’’s not that noticeable,”” but their
widened pupils tell a different story. It’’s time to call in the Terminator
Acne Spot Treatment (featuring 5 per cent benzoyl peroxide) by the
encouragingly named AcneFree. Twenty-four hours later, my not-solittle friend is swiftly retreating: Hasta la vista, pimple!
I start mulling over something else Barankin said: ““Don’’t mess
with success. If you’’ve done well with [a product] in the past, there’’s
a higher chance you’’ll do well with it again.”” When I was a teenager,
Oxy’’s medicated acne pads were my go-to, and as luck would have
it, they’’re available with a gentler formula and come in sophisticated
black packaging (a far cry from the bright turquoise and pink
I remember). It turns out the pre-soaked, salicylic-acid-laden pads
still do the trick. Maybe it’’s time I embraced the ’’90s again after all.
TREND SPOTTER
What happens when you’re in your 30s but your
skin is staging a teenage rebellion? Nicole Keen
tackles the problem one pimple at a time.
DON’’T GET ME wrong. I loved the ’’90s as much as the next
girl, and seeing brown lipstick (RIP Maybelline New York Toasted
Almond) and oral babydoll dresses stage a comeback denitely
makes me nostalgic, but I’’m more than happy to leave these all-toofamiliar trends to the next generation. You see, I’’m just not willing
to rock overalls and plastic tattoo chokers a second time around.
My personal style has evolved since my teen years. My skin? Not
so much. Unfortunately, my acne also received the memo about
a retro revival because, at 34, I’’m struggling with the same skin
issues I faced in 1995.
Like many teenagers, I battled with breakouts (there are some
pictures of myself——with a bumpy forehead and inamed cheeks——I’’d
like to toss on a bonre), but I thought I’’d left all of that behind along
with my oversized annel shirts. I realize now that the clear skin
I enjoyed throughout my 20s and early 30s was probably a pleasant
side effect of the birth control pill. Since quitting the Pill for health
reasons a few years ago, all hell has broken loose——on my face. So

WITHMANSCAPINGANDMANBUNS now part of our vocabulary, one thing is clear:
Men are looking at grooming in a whole new light. And as their interest in it grows,
so does their interest in grooming gadgets. Philips has elevated the shaving and hair
removal game, and offers gi-worthy options for every guy on your list, whether it’s a
bearded bf who likes his mirror time, or a discerning dad who prefers the path of least
resistance when it comes to grooming.
DOUBLE DUTY
Just like smartphones and apps,
we expect our beauty products
and grooming tools to make our
lives easier and adapt to whatever
situation we’re in. The Philips
AquaTouch Shaver oers
versatility in the palm of his hand. Its
AquaTec Seal means it can be used
wet or dry, and if he has sensitive
skin, he can use shaving gel or
foam for extra comfort and minimal
irritation. So, whether he prefers to
shave in the shower or does his best
work on the go, he gets killer results
no matter what.
MULTIPLE CHOICE
Studies say women are better multitaskers. We agree, but Philips
Multigroom Series 5000 arms
men with a collection of all-terrain shave
and trim tools that just may level the
playing field—at least in the grooming
department. With 18 length setting
options (including Turbo, for the follically
blessed), guys have a versatile 8-piece
kit (including a nose trimmer attachment)
that allows them to do everything from
creating a 3-day beard to targeting
unwanted hair below the neck.
SMOOTH FINISH
Tough exterior or not, men like a
smooth shave. The Philips Shaver
Series 7000 delivers precision
without the irritation. Blades float
across skin, thanks to a trio of
comfort rings that keep things
gliding along smoothly. And, while
its adaptable heads hug all the right
curves (targeting even the stubbiest
stubble), that’s not the only flexible
feature: AquaTec technology allows
for shaving in the shower or on dry
land, and an attachable trimmer can
do moustache and sideburn touchups on the fly.
EASY DOES IT
Even if we’ve spent a lot of time getting ready,
we want it to look like it took us five minutes tops.
Leading man stubble or a well-groomed beard
should look eortless, too. And maintaining
the look should be just as easy. The Philips
Beardtrimmer Series 3000 makes it a
cinch with ergonomic design for an easy grip,
and settings that let him lock in his ideal style
depending on the look he wants. Meanwhile,
barbershop-sharp titanium blades oer cuttingedge results without irritation thanks to rounded
blade tips and combs.

FOR MY DAUGHTER’S TEACHER Truthfully, I can’’t thank my daughter’’s
teacher enough (she’’s surrounded by four-year-olds all day), but
this Quo cosmetic set will certainly help. Who can resist the nostalgiainduced excitement of opening a holiday cracker? And with longer-lasting
treasures like berry-toned lipglosses and neutral eyeshadows, she’’ll want to
keep all four for herself. FOR MY HUSBAND By association, my hubby is a fragrance
end. He’’s picky, and will surely love the fresh and smoky qualities of this new Dior
men’’s eau. It has a burst of freshness from Calabrian bergamot and settles into
a sexy tobacco-laced scent with notes of lavender (my fave!) and geranium. It’’s so
versatile that he can wear it with a suit or jeans. That is, when I’’m not stealing
a spritz for myself. FOR MYSELF Beauty products are great and all, but candles
are what really do it for me. I collect them and consider them a decor
staple (right next to my stack of coffee-table books). The luxe factor of
this Nest 3-wick candle ambience maker is twofold: The glass jar is
impossibly chic (hello future home of my makeup brushes), and
the smoky scent, thanks to oud wood and frankincense, is
unlike anything I’’ve ever experienced. Burning it
is like being transported to the most glam
campre ever.

FOR MY DOG WALKER What can you get the person you entrust to look after your most prized possession? My
dog Gertrude is my sidekick and the light of my life, and it takes a kind soul to put up with my demands
(Gert only gets the best!) and her stubborn nature (she’’s a bulldog, after all). My dog walker is so busy
looking after little critters that she doesn’’t get much time to treat herself. This stylish oral scent
by Michael Kors will let her indulge a little. FOR MY GRANDMOTHER My g-ma is a total babe with
impeccable taste. At 87, she always takes time in the morning for her beauty rituals. Every time
I see her, she’’s sporting lush silver waves and subtly highlighted eyes. She’’s never without a
touch of champagne shadow to brighten up her lids, and Chanel’’s next-level eyeshadow
palette would add a dash of decadence to her a.m. primping. FOR MYSELF Nars has
produced some of my all-time favourite collections, and this year it paired
up with photographer Steven Klein. The collection’’s pièce de
résistance is this cool-girl cheek palette. It contains four
totally wearable hues in one killer case.

Bonus: the bottle features a tasty recipe, so she’’ll have plenty of inspiration for
next year’’s baking session. FOR MY MOM-IN-LAW She always has an arrangement of fresh
cut owers in the house, so Lancôme’’s new La Vie Est Belle Intense perfume, with
feminine notes of iris pallida and orange blossom, is a natural addition to her dressing table.
(It doesn’’t hurt that the ladylike lavender glass bottle is so darn pretty.) FOR MYSELF Considering
polka dots are my jam, I knew this quirky tin packed with Benet products had to be mine as
soon as I laid eyes on it. I’’m already a fan of Benetint (who doesn’’t love a good lip-meets-cheek tint?)

Whether it’’s shoes or art, my sister loves
to collect things that are rare and one-ofa-kind. That’’s why I know she’’ll love this
limited-edition Stila Sealed With a Kiss
Lip Glaze Set. Plus, the colours are perfect
for every occasion and t neatly into a
clutch. FOR MYSELF Usually, I’’m a bold red
lip kind of girl, but lately, it’’s all about the
eyes. My go-to is a smoky eye in rich
colours. This Lise Watier Majestique
limited-edition palette has shades
like gold, chocolate brown and
bronze that will help me go
for a modern smoky eye
this season.

Something luxurious that she wouldn’’t

FOR MYSELF Full disclosure: I’’m a scent junkie. Rows upon rows of bottles line the

The holiday season is the perfect excuse to pull out all the
stops and show off your best in beauty. I like to become my
own personal glam squad, trying out new looks using my
favourite go-to products. It’s time to pop some bubbly and
throw on your fave playlist (Beyoncé, anyone?).
Here’s my step-by-step guide to getting gorgeous.

No matter how much time you spend getting ready, it will all be for
naught without the proper prep steps. Enter Smashbox Primer
Water. I always give myself a spritz post-moisturizer and after
makeup to help my foundation go the distance.
EXCLUSIVE
Blush is one of my desert island items (seriously, you’’ll never spot me
without it)! To get a lit-from-within-glow, use your ngers to swirl
a cream formula like Lise Watier Blush Fondant Supreme in
Natural onto the apples of your cheeks.

No soiree is complete without a heavy dose of sparkle. I like to buff
a champagne shadow like Clinique All About Shadow Singles
in French Vanilla over my lids and up to my browbones to add
dimension and prep my eyes for liner.
LINER NOTES
A bold cat eye is my go-to if I’’m having a big night out. I always reach for
a smudge-free liquid that promises to stay put like Stila Stay All Day
Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner. Its marker-like tip helps the quick-dry
formula glide on easily.

LASH OUT
A full, uttery fringe is always a good idea. To nish off my eyes, I
curl my lashes then load up with a few coats of a volume-boosting
formula like Lancôme Hypnôse Volume-À-Porter Mascara.
BROW BOOSTER
The bold arch trend is here to stay. A long-wearing gel like Benet

brows. Simply comb through and mould hairs into shape.

PUCKER UP
I’’ve been really into the bold fuchsias and reds of this year’’s fall
season. Bourjois Paris Rouge Edition Velvet in Pink Pong is
one of my faves since it sets without budging so I can eat, drink and
be merry without touch-ups.
FINISHING TOUCH
A few spritzes from a festive scent sets my mood for the evening.
I like a fruity oral blend with sweet notes like Ari by Ariana

CLOSE-UP
GRANDE SLAM
Pop star and ponytail aficionado Ariana Grande gives
us a glimpse into her sugary-sweet life with the launch
of her debut scent, Ari. BY EMILY MACCULLOCH
EVEN THOUGH 22-year-old Ariana
Grande has legions of fans (called
Arianators, FYI), a smash sophomore
album and a successful acting career
that includes Nickelodeon’’s Victorious
and a guest-starring role on the new
TV show Scream Queens, the pint-sized
singer insists she’’s still just a down-toearth girl from Boca Raton, Florida.
She also doesn’’t take herself too seriously
(just Google her impersonations on
Jimmy Fallon), which makes us like her
even more. And now the cat eye- and
sky-high-ponytail-wearing singer is
joining the ranks of pop royalty with the
launch of Ari by Ariana Grande. From
the blush-hued glass, complete with a
uffy white pompom, to the oral fruity
gourmand, the fragrance is Grande to
a T. The singing sensation gives us an
all-access pass into how she’’s connecting
with her fans and why her new scent is
hitting all the right notes.
ARI BY ARIANA GRANDE
EAU DE PARFUM, $58 for
50 ml, is exactly what
you’d imagine the singer
smelling like IRL. A blend
of raspberry, vanilla orchid
and musk with a touch of
marshmallow, it’s sweet
and spunky just like her.
FAN-GIRLING TO THE FULLEST
“Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn
Monroe are my first and foremost
beauty icons. They really found their
niche and had such classic looks that they
stuck with for their whole careers. They
weren’t afraid to wear what they loved
and be themselves, and they stood for
such different things. I also love Madonna
because she switches it up all the time.
There isn’t a look she hasn’t done, yet you
still know it’s Madonna. She has celebrated
so many kinds of beauty, done so many
different looks and changes it up all the
time, and I think that’s beautiful too.”
BEAUTY MVPS
“I love good lashes
ashes as well as really
re good, thick and
creamy concealer
ealer because I’m Italian and I never sleep
and that’s a combination from hell. I’ve got bags for days.”

THE SMELL OF SUCCESS
“I’ve been a huge fragrance fan my whole life.
I always carried multiple [scents] in my purse,
kept them in my locker at school and in my
backpack. I was really intimidated [to launch
my own] because I wanted to make sure it was
perfect. I think we made something perfect,
and I’m very, very happy with it.”
WAYBACK PLAYBACK
“I wanted the bottle
to be old school
and look retro and
mod, like something
you’d see on Audrey
Hepburn’s wardrobe.
I [pictured] it on her
dresser while she
was getting ready
and doing her hair
and makeup.”

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
“My fragrance is tied to a campaign
called ‘Be You’ (#beyou). Because it’s
called Ari by Ariana Grande, it’s like
a little part of me for my fans. What I love
about the campaign is that it’s telling my
fans that they can be their own kind of
beautiful and that’s more than enough.
There’s such a weird thing in society
where we hold men and women, more
so women, to such high standards in
beauty and body and trends, but none
of that should really matter. We should
celebrate individuality, and that’s what
the campaignn is all about.”
about.
PERFORMING FOR HER
ARIANATORS
“It’s been such a
blessing to travel
the world, perform
for my fans and
see their faces
every day. Just
seeing them in
the audience and
the funny signs
that they hold up—
they’re so cute.”

Nothing turns heads quite like dark lips, as proven by

YOU’’RE NOT IMAGINING it: Chocolate is trending. There are

The good news is that past research has shown it’’s good for your heart,
but it may also be good for your brain, according to a brand new study

in chocolate seem to reduce the production of proteins that are

1. Splash a tired face with cold water, then cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize. “It freshens the skin and
the psyche,” Jarman says. For pale skin, she uses a soft blush and a bright peachy lipstick. A dark
lip makes you look sallow, she warns. To combat flushed skin, she lightly applies foundation and
makes use of the redness as a natural blush.
2. “You can tell if someone’s sick by their eyes,” she says. For red peepers, she
uses Visine. “Then, I’ll line the waterline with a beige eyeliner.” Don’t forget
waterproof mascara! Try: Rimmel London Exaggerate Waterproof Eye
Definer in In The Nude, $9, with Maybelline Volum’ Express The Colossal
Chaotic Lash Waterproof Mascara, $11.

3. Wiping your nose can mess up foundation and cause skin to flake. “Blow your nose, then use
HydraSense,” says Jarman, speaking on behalf of the company. “Do this before you put on
makeup so the nasal cavities are moisturized and cleared of extra mucous.” Jarman stocks
travel-size sprays in her makeup kit. Try: HydraSense Daily Nasal Care Spray, 100 ml, $17.

SAY
WHAT?
THE PHARMACIST
SAYS: “Treat a hangover like you
would any other ailment: Consider the symptoms.
If your stomach isn’t upset and you can take ibuprofen,
it may help with a headache. Acetaminophen shouldn’t be
taken with alcohol because it can put stress on the liver. To recoup
electrolytes lost through dehydration—alcohol is a diuretic—drink
a sports drink. To combat red eyes, try moisturizing eye drops.
And, of course, let yourself rest for the day. Next time, pace
yourself and have a glass of water between drinks.”

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS GIVING
Want to pay it forward? Let Vaseline make a donation for you. In partnership
with Direct Relief, a non-profit that helps in emergency situations and works
to improve the health of poor populations, Unilever will donate Vaseline
petroleum jelly when you visit vaseline.ca/en/thevaselinehealingproject.
That helps a lot, say dermatologists Dr. Grace Bandow, a Bristol, R.I.-based
doctor, and Dr. Samer Jaber, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology
at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. In 2015, they went to Jordan as part of the
Vaseline Healing Project. “People need shelter and food and water,” says Jaber, “but skincare is
important in these situations. We saw 1,200 patients in one week.” Bandow adds: “We saw a lot of
people suffering from burns and cracked and dry skin. It’s an example of how a simple product like
Vaseline can be used to heal skin. We were surprised by the need for such a basic product.”

“Many cough, cold and flu medications contain more than
one active ingredient,” says Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacist
Bhavika Prajapati, “so it’s important to ask your pharmacist
what you should be taking to avoid double dosing.” Taking
multiple meds may put you at risk for harmful side effects.
Never take more than the recommended dose, even when
mixing over-the-counter products, she adds.
STAY IN BED
“I wouldn’t recommend going out when you’re sick,
especially when you’re taking medications,” says Prajapati.
“They can have uncomfortable side effects, such as feeling
drowsy. Give your body and mind the time to relax and
recharge. If you have the flu, stay home.”
4 TIPS TO FEEL
BETTER & STAY
HEALTHY
1. ““Get enough rest,”” says Prajapati. ““Not enough people do this,
but it will help your body ght off the virus.””
2. Drink lots of uids, she says. Staying hydrated keeps nasal
passages clear, and it also helps you take your medications.
3. Some cold medications can make you drowsy, but so can beer,
wine and liquor, which may make the side effects worse. Always
read and follow medication labels. Also, ““Check with your
pharmacist about interactions with alcohol,”” she says.
4. Wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer when soap and
water are not available. This protects you from spreading a
virus, and will also help you avoid getting infected by a virus.

VS.
GO TO THE PARTY
“When you first catch a virus, you’re at your most contagious,” says Prajapati. “A cold can last between seven
to 14 days .” That’s the entire holidays! “When you feel
better and you’ve regained your strength—without the
help of medication—you should be okay to go out.”
Ask your Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacist how you can feel better this holiday
season. These products may not be right for you. Always read and follow the label.

Are you
between
35-58 yrs and
coping with
hot flushes or

Help us find effective treatment for hot flushes for you and
others like you.
We are looking for women based anywhere in Canada
to participate in a government-funded 4-month study on
how progesterone can be used to control hot flushes in
perimenopausal women. You can participate if you:
• Are between the ages of 35 – 58
• Have menstruated within 12 months
• Experience 4 hot flushes a day or twice weekly night sweats
• Have not taken estrogen, progesterone or birth control pills
within 6 months
You will be asked to keep a daily record of hot flushes and night
sweats and receive study medication (progesterone or placebo)
for 3 months. Whether you receive the progesterone or the
placebo, you are likely to see a reduction in your hot flushes and
night sweats while also making a major contribution to women’s
health and the advancement of Canadian science.

WITH YOUR BOD
Here’’s a radical little exercise aha, courtesy
of celeb trainer Harley Pasternak. Your
workout isn’’t going to transform your body––
your life will. ““Stop focusing on the workout.
There’’s a lot of unhealthy overweight people
who never miss a spin class and still aren’’t
meeting their goals,”” says Pasternak, who
trains Natalie Portman, Megan Fox and
Kate Beckinsale.
In fact, it’’s not the hour spent at the gym
that will help you t into a body-con frock by
Valentine’’s Day, it’’s what you do for the other
23 hours, says Pasternak. He advocates an
overall healthy lifestyle as the surest way to
be red carpet-ready all year long.
That means maintaining consistent,
regular activity. ““Take at least 10,000

steps a day,”” he says. ““II wear a Fi
Fitbit,
bi and
d
so do my clients.”” It also means getting at
least seven hours of sleep each night and
powering down from life-force-draining
technology, in Pasternak’’s opinion.
““Charge your phone in another room,”” he
says, and turn off all tech at an appointed
time, like, say, 9 p.m. You’’ll decompress
by the time you hit the sheets.
By committing to these behaviours, you’’ll
make a serious dent in curbing unhealthy
ones, such as overeating and a buzzing mind.
A lack of sleep negatively affects metabolism,
ramps up your appetite and almost always
guarantees you’’ll be sluggish. Get a good
rest, however, and make your steps goal.
““The synergy has a giant impact,”” he says.

What does a starlet with a beachfront home know about health and wellness
that we haven’t
wel
quite figured out (or don’t have the time to contemplate)? That the mind and body are connected,
says Jesse Hanson, clinical director and co-founder of Helix Healthcare Group, with two private
healthcare facilities in Toronto.
“In California, it’s just common knowledge that your mind and body are connected, and if you’re
feeling sick or have something going on physically, there’s something going on emotionally too, and
those emotions probably precede the ailment.” Away from La La Land, though, there’s still a divide
between the mind and the body, says Hanson, who is familiar with celebrity lifestyles, having spent
six years of his career working for the celeb-friendly rehab centre Passages in Malibu and Ventura.
The importance of grasping that connection can’t be underestimated, he says. Once you really
understand the relationship between mind and body, you will be more inclined to make healthy
decisions, he believes.
To kick off your mind-body awareness, Hanson recommends reading the books Buddha’s Brain:
The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love and Wisdom and Bodymind. And the next time you
feel your health sliding—you’re lethargic, you have an injury that just won’t go away or you’re getting
sick more often—ask yourself how you’re doing emotionally.

isn’t a secret; it’s a habit, even when
you’re on vacation.
Sebastien Agnes, chef at Seared
restaurant at the One&Only Palmilla in
Los Cabos, Mexico, confirms that celebs
are consistent with their diets. The fivestar resort, which is the preferred haunt
of the likes of Aniston and Diane Kruger,
serves up “simple organic fare,” says
Agnes. “The more simple the better.”
Go for lean proteins (steamed or grilled),
fresh veggies, whole grains and fruit. This
way of eating gets the thumbs up from
Pasternak, who was recently in Toronto
touting the benefits of Metamucil.
He insists that all his clients follow a
straightforward formula: three meals and
two snacks a day——and make sure that
each meal has protein and fibre.
“[Eating] protein and fibre five times
a day is really important,” he says.
“Those nutrients don’t contribute to
weight gain and do contribute to satiety
and metabolism.”
For breakfast, lunch and dinner, have
a piece of protein that’s roughly the size
of your hand, plus unlimited veggies,
a thumb-sized dash of a healthy fat and
a palmful of whole grains (or high-fibre
fruit), advises Pasternak. Snacks should
consist of a small piece of protein (about
a third of your main meal) plus fibre.

Celebs don’’t make the common mistake of thinking all exercise
is created equal, says Pasternak. If you aim to tone, strengthen
and sculpt your body, you can’’t rely on cardio alone; you must
add resistance training to your daily activity (in addition to the
10,000-step cardio commitment). Pasternak advises people to start
by doing one resistance training exercise (think lunges, squats,
push-ups, etc.) a day for ve to 10 minutes. If your goal is to really
sculpt your backside or your legs, he says, amp up the intensity
and the duration of your workout.
Again, the effectiveness is dependent on an overarching
commitment to being active and healthy. ““If you’’re sleeping and
eating well and hitting your 10,000-steps goal every day, that ve
to 10 minutes of resistance training a day is all you need.””

6. Take advantage of
YOUR #GIRLSQUAD
Disappointment, breakups, death, debt, unemployment——when it comes to life’’s ups and
downs, celebrities really are just like us. They, too, must nd sanctuary to heal broken
hearts, shattered dreams and decimated savings accounts. Fortunately for them, they also
have access to private wellness facilities——a denite bonus. ““[Speak with] a real trained
professional who can work with you psychotherapeutically, spiritually, emotionally and all of
the above,”” says Hanson. If you’’re low on funds and spirit, don’’t isolate yourself. Instead, seek
a supportive entourage, just like an A-lister would. ““We are biologically engineered to evolve
through connection and relationships,”” says Hanson. Luckily, connection doesn’’t cost a thing.
YOU DESERVE A GOLD STAR

to tackle your inner Miss
Scrooge. BY ANNE T. DONAHUE
LAST YEAR, I survived the holidays on Imodium and Gravol. I hit a wall so hard on
December 24th that I spent the day popping pills. By dinnertime I was clutching my cell,
trying to discreetly edit an article under the kitchen counter. The worst part: I couldn’’t even
enjoy my new Altuzarra for Target outt. I’’ve since realized the most wonderful time of the
year doesn’’t have to be that dreadful. Here’’s how to take stressful holiday situations in stride.

88 GLOW WINTER 2016
To reaffirm my belief that attending everything
is ridiculous, Dawn Kingston, assistant professor
of nursing at the University of Alberta, assures
me that if you don’t want to go somewhere, you
don’t have to. “Ask yourself, ‘Do I really need to
go to both?’” she says in response to my partyhopping query. “We need to ask ourselves what
value will come from events where we have
brief, superficial contact with people. Is this
how we want to invest our time and energy?”
Nope. Especially since, by the third party of the
night, most of us are shells standing around
the snack table and glowering at anyone who
dares to double dip.
The more stressed we get, the more
irrational some of us become (umm, hi!).
Instead of treating work deadlines like we
normally would, we Tetris our schedules
and end up with no actual downtime.
Fortunately, the key to managing time is
simple: Imagine it’’s not the holidays. Any
other time of year, it’’s perfectly acceptable to
RSVP ““I’’m swamped.”” On the ip side, it’’s
not unreasonable to ask for extra time with
an assignment. Admitting you can’’t do it all
(ugh) isn’’t defeat, it’’s sanity-saving.
Sure, we start the holidays budgeting like
grown-ass women, but dinner parties, gift
exchanges and everything else kill that dream.
This time of year is expensive.
Kingston points me toward the budgeting
system from Smart Money Smart Kids authors
Dave Ramsey and Rachel Cruze. They suggest
using envelopes to define purchases—an
envelope for each person, and cash only. Is
your Longchamp nylon bag already stuffed?
Download an app like Santa’s Bag or Gift It.
Having a budget strategy helps spread out
your spending over weeks, which makes you
less likely to overspend on last-minute gifts.
Unless, of course, you’re buying a gift for me—
in which case, go all out.
Thanks to Instagram, few of us (hello again!)
fear anything more than the repeat outt.
Since we don’’t have a Kardashian’’s wardrobe,
we’’re forced to compromise. The thing is,
nobody wants to spend a fortune on a new
wardrobe now. You can either seek your
inner minimalist (stick to neutrals, abiding
by a uniform-like code), or take solace in
knowing that no one is cataloguing your
looks. The dress you wore to that wedding last
summer? It’’s safe to repeat. The same goes for
workwear. ““Throwing on accessories, like
a statement necklace or earrings, can change
your outt,”” says London-based fashion
PR pro Genevieve Torabi. (Think: layered
metallic pieces with an embellished clutch.)
Last resort: Makeup amps up any look with
minimal effort. Take the fall/winter 2015
beauty looks at Carolina Herrera, Rodarte
and Temperley London. The models wore
glittery, sparkly eye makeup. Do this and no
one will notice your signature leather jacket.

THE SLIMMING
EFFECT OF STABLE
BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS
The link between sugar consumption and
increased body fat has long been known.
Too much sugar in the diet promotes
more insulin, the fat storing hormone,
and thus more body fat.
R
ecently an Italian study of a sugar-blocking supplement showed impressive weight loss results.1
e supplement, called ZuccarinTM, produced
on average 20 pounds of weight loss, in only 90 days.
e subjects lost 10% of their body weight and lost 3
times the weight of the control group, who were on a
controlled diet, but without a mulberry supplement. In
addition, the subjects also experienced healthier blood
sugar levels aer using this mulberry supplement.
The explanation for the weight loss is that Zuccarin
uses natural mulberry leaf extract and chromium
to block absorption of sugars in the foods we eat.
When these sugars are undigested, our blood sugar
stabilizes, and weight loss occurs.

ZUCCARIN MAX CHANGED MY LIFE
“I read about Zuccarin in a magazine
and since I have blood sugar issues,
I started taking the supplement right
away. I have taken it for 2 years now and
can’t imagine being without it. I have
seen my blood sugar levels stabilize and
I have even lost 25 pounds of weight
since starting. I have recommended
Zuccarin to a lot of my friends and they
are now experiencing the same good
results as I have. I love this product.”

WE STILL REMEMBER the moment we rst saw Dior Tribale

limited-edition lacquers that can be easily led under ““Things You’’d

are four shades: ery red, shimmering gold, deep plum and ““Gris-Or,””
which changes colour like a mood ring from amber to platinum to
