THE 2016 INNOVATION COMPETITION

twelve candidates out of twenty three
applications, which were then visited
during the first day of the Exhibition, on
Tuesday 15th March 2016.
Following the visits to the applicants’ stands and the technical presentation of the
twelve preselected candidates, the Jury awarded nine prizes: four «Bois Energie d’Or»
and five «Bois Energie d’Argent», covering four categories :

Category 3 : Localised wood heating for the domestic sector
Category 4 : District heating
The jury would like to thank all companies who submitted an application, winners
and losers alike, and stresses how vital it is to the sector to keep this dynamism and
pioneering spirit, to provide even better solutions to the users’ needs.

for the design of silos
This guide answers a very important need for the sector, several
boilers having serious issues just because of their silo. It is the
result of a long study and a lot of discussions with all stakeholders
of the sector:
• Wood fuel supply professionals
• Boiler manufacturers
• Field surveys when data was not reliable

The jury did also appreciate the attention paid to security and
occupational health, in partnership with CARSAT, and the special care
given to accessibility of silos for delivery trucks. Last but not least, the
guide is rather cheap (48€) and will be updated every year, making it a
vital tool for project developers. It comes with a USB key storing the 3D
data in the guide, and a small synthetic memo, listing all crucial points
to be aware of.

This top feeding system can be adapted to different
kind of boilers. The jury found three main advantages
compared to classical feeding systems:
• Low demand in civil works (no pit, lightweight system,
which doesn’t require particular reinforcements)

It is a mobile and autonomous log cutting and splitting
machine. It is the fruit of several innovations and
incremental improvements over several years. It allows

sawing and splitting of all sizes of wood, while remaining
mobile. The machine can be transported by truck, and then installed as needed, thanks to four
actuators. It is thus adapted both to the service market, and for on-site production. It requires
only one operator to produce 7 to 30 steres per hour.

Category 2 Central wood heating for
the domestic sector

ÖkoFEN – Suction cup
It is the first time that a pellet boiler can use a suction cup, just as it
is sometimes the case for heavy fuel or gas boilers. This installation
process, certified by CSTB, has been specifically developed by
ÖkoFEN for the French market. It is a true technological advance,
as it greatly simplifies the installer’s work, while reducing costs
tied to the smoke duct. Constraints of the French regulatory
framework, requiring that the duct raises 40cm above ridge height
without any obstacle within 8m, are indeed avoided: the pellet
boiler can now connect to the suction cup either directly through
a wall, or vertically, without having to go above the ridge, just as it
is done for a heavy fuel or gas boiler.
The suction cup is meant exclusively for the condensing boilers of
the manufacturer: Pellematic Condens, Pelematic Smart XS and
Pellematic Smart XL, from 10 to 18 kW. Fruit of a collaboration
with smoke duct manufacturers, this process required specific
improvements on smoke duct air-tightness, and the control of
depression in the grate.
Bois Energie d’ARGENT
GF Services – RTB boilers
Brand new «Ready to burn» (RTB) boilers, offering an exceptionally
low modulation rate for this kind of device: down to 10% of
nominal power with continuous modulation, while keeping optimal
efficiency. Advantage: less short start & stop cycles, resulting in lower
consumption and less component wear and tear, particularly in midseason when heating needs are lower. This feature also simplifies
hydraulic devices, as it is no longer necessary to have a buffer storage
tank. Other notable feature of the device: the grate is cleaned by a
compressed air blower. The product range goes from 10 to 80kW, with
a possibility to combine up to four units of 80 kW.
From Danish origins, this brand making its firsts steps in France equips
all his devices with the «Cloud service», a remote control system. With
a simple internet connection, without any additional software, the
user can follow his consumption (for both heating and hot water),
analyse and follow combustion parameters, check the ash tray status
or even the level of remaining pellets, with automated e-mails or SMS
in case of fault. The installer can also undertake remote maintenance
as part of his after-sale service.

Category 3 Localised wood heating for
the domestic sector

Rika – IDEA Rikatronic 4
Very first wood log stove with an automated ignition
device. The manufacturer equipped the IDEA with the
Rikatronic 4 technology, already available for pellet
stoves. This system not only improves combustion,
thanks to automated air inlet management, but also
triggers ignition automatically.
The user just needs to load the logs, put a fire
starter in the tray and schedule the start within 24
hours. Combustion is then regulated automatically.
Moreover, this stove is equipped with an integrated
air distribution system (Multiair), allowing to heat
two adjacent rooms. Blowers switch on and off with
a control panel. It is also possible to regulate the
convection flow.
Bois Energie d’ARGENT
Juwadis – Rodtech
Device making life easier for the chimney sweep, thanks to a simple screwer connected to
the chimney brush. One just needs to insert the brush in the duct, connect the poles to each
other and fix the far end to the screwer. Advantage: much quicker results but also increased
comfort for the chimney sweep. The product
range includes four nylon brushes from 80 to
900 mm for all circular, square and rectangular
ducts. The 1m poles are available in different
diameters too, from 8 to 18 mm. They can add
up to 40 m in length. A bistre removal kit is
available, featuring a steel brush, to be used with
the same poles, and bistre removing chains. This
equipment can be used both from the bottom
and the top.

Saelen Energie / Heizomat – Wood chip carrying chain
Device to carry wood chips with a chain. This
system, patented by HEIZOMAT, is both simple
and robust, but is certainly one of the main
innovations of the recent years. For its cost
comparable to a feeder screw, this device can
carry silently wood chips of different sizes over
long distances. Maintenance seems easy and the
system can be adapted to all sizes of boilers, from
the domestic sector to industrial needs. It also
reduces the required electric engine power by
more than 50%.

ETA Hack 350
The overall design of this 350 kW boiler
improves several aspects of combustion
and environmental impact, while remaining
compact. We can cite three points in particular:
• A vertical exchanger, making cleaning easier
• A multicyclone filter integrated to this
exchanged, to reduce particulate emissions
and improve efficiency
• A flue gas recirculation system, rare on products of this power range
