Lawrence of Arabia
[Thomas Edward Lawrence]
A brief summary of his lifeLawrence was born at Tremadog, in Wales, on 16th August
1888. He was educated at City of Oxford High School and Jesus College,Oxford, from where
he graduated with First Class Honours. Fluentin half a dozen languages and with
a passion for architecture and medieval history he made his first visit to the Middle
East in 1909,returning the following year to work as anarchaeologist. His well-chronicled
activities during WWI, coordinating the Arab tribes against the Ottoman Turks,
resulted in his appointment to Lieutenant Colonel. While serving as advisor to
Winston Churchill at the Colonial Office he was bitterly disappointed at the outcome of
the Paris Peace Conference, considering it a betrayal of our Arab allies. Lawrence had
unwittingly become a world-renowned figure as a result of the international lecture
tour by American journalist Lowell Thomas, which vividly described Lawrence's part in the
Middle East conflict, but whose subject deplored the accrued fame, withdrawing shortly
from public life to complete his acclaimed work Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Constantly pursued
by the press he later joined the RAF as an ordinary serviceman under an assumed name,
after a similar previous attempt [in the Army] was exposed by newspapermen.
Aside from an involvement assisting the development programme for motor rescue launches
Lawrence enjoyed a relative obscurity in theRAF, including a lengthy posting overseas. It
was in anticipation of his retirement in 1935 that he purchased a cottage at Clouds Hill,
near Bovington, Dorset, where he announced that he planned to rusticate.
TE Lawrence was an habitual motorcyclist of discerning taste,
famously loyal to Brough Superior. Enthusiasts are fulfilled by the
joy of his time in the saddle, about which he has written so
beautifully. Tragically, as we know, he lost his life during a routine
journey across Bovington Heath in May 1935. Meanwhile the image
of this fine gentle man, and for all that he stood, will forever survive.
