King Abdullah passes away
Dear colleagues,
Last weekend, the Kingdom suffered
a great loss with the passing of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King
Abdullah ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz Al-Sa’ud, may
God bless his soul. I join you all in praying to God to grant him His Mercy and reward for the development, progress and
prosperity he brought to the country and
its people during his blessed reign.
The image of King Abdullah will always be alive in the hearts of the Kingdom’s citizens and everyone who has
called the Kingdom home. They witnessed firsthand, day after day, the great
developmental strides that took place
during his auspicious reign and the effects they are having on the nation. They
also remember how he dedicated his life
to improving the lives of its citizens.
At Saudi Aramco, we fondly recall
the wonderful memories we had of him,
reminiscing about his care for the company and its employees. We recall how
he supported its transformation and sustainable growth. We recall how he honored us with several visits to celebrate
the company’s many national achievements that were made under his generous patronage, which greatly boosted
the Kingdom’s growth and prosperity,
while we continued to reliably supply
the world with energy.
In particular, we can never forget how
this great leader entrusted our company
with many of the Kingdom’s developmental, knowledge and youth projects.
It was our greatest honor to implement
these projects, such as the King Abdullah
University for Science and Technology
(KAUST), the King Abdullah Sports City
(KASC) and the King Abdullah Petroleum
Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC),
because they are central to achieving his
vision for the Kingdom. His legacy will
live on in these works and in the hearts
of all of those who will enjoy and benefit from them for decades to come.
Finally, the memory of his wise leadership should comfort all of us during
this time of loss, and God willing, we
are confident that his example will see
the Kingdom’s prosperity and progress
continue under the new Custodian of
the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman ibn
‘Abd al-’Aziz Al-Sa’ud.
May God bestow His Mercy upon our
beloved late king and keep our country
safe, strong and prosperous.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques
King Salman
A history of strong guidance, charitableness
On Friday, Jan. 23, HRH
Salman ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz AlSa’ud ascended the throne
following the passing of King
Abdullah.
Custodian of the Two Holy
Mosques, King Salman had
served as Crown Prince and
Deputy Premier since June 18,
2012, after the passing of HRH
Prince Naif. During that time,
he also had continued to serve
in the role as Minister of Defense, a position to which he
was named on Nov. 5, 2011.
The majority of King
Salman’s years of service to
the Kingdom were in his role
as Governor of the Riyadh Region. King Salman was appointed acting governor of
Riyadh on March 17, 1954. He
was named the governor of
the Riyadh Region on April 18,
1955, with the rank of minister.
As Crown Prince, King
Salman acted as regent when
King Abdullah went abroad.
King Salman was born on
Dec. 31, 1935, the 25th son
of the founding King ‘Abd al‘Aziz (ibn Sa’ud). He was educated at the School of Princes
in Riyadh, which was established by his father, King ‘Abd
al-‘Aziz Al-Sa’ud. He studied
religion and modern sciences.
His strong interest in education continued through the
years, and he received a number of certificates and honorary doctorates from institutions
such as Medina Islamic University, Um Al-Qura University in
Makkah, Jamia Millia Islamia in
New Delhi and the Kant Medal from Berlin-Brandenburg
Academy for Sciences and Humanities.
He established close relations with the majority of
countries. As Crown Prince,
King Salman also traveled to a
number of countries to further
strengthen ties.
During his 56 year tenure as Governor, King Salman
greatly assisted in developing Riyadh into a major urban
Kingdom. His high initiative and abilities helped

In 2011, after he was appointed Minister of Defense, King Salman oversaw a significant expansion
in training and the largest military training exercise
in the Kingdom, Saif Abdullah
(Abdullah’s sword).
King Salman also is wellknown for his work with
philanthropy and charitable institutions. He is chairman of the
King Abdulaziz Foundation for
Research and Archives, the King
Abdulaziz Museum, the Prince
Salman Center for Disability Research and the Prince Fahd bin
Salman Charitable Society for
the Care of Kidney Patients.
In September 2012, he was
named the deputy chairman of
the Military Service Council.
But his penchant for cultural and humanitarian work
stretches back to the 1950s.
He has chaired a number of associations, organizations and
charitable committees inside
the Kingdom and abroad, and
sponsored and supported many
cultural projects.
He is chairman of the board
of directors of the Riyadh Philanthropic Society for Sciences,
president of the Prince Salman
Prize for Qur’an Memorization
for boys and girls in the Kingdom, honorary president of the
Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation and chairman of the
board of directors of the Prince
Salman Charity Housing Project.
He is also chairman of the
board of trustees of the King
Fahd National Library, chairman
of the board of directors of the
History Center of Makkah and
Medina, chairman of the board
of trustees of Hamad Al-Jasser
Institution, honorary chairman
of the board of trustees of the
Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz
Award for Young Entrepreneurs,
honorary president of the Saudi
Historical Association and honorary president of Riyadh Schools.
Previously, he served as the
president of the Riyadh Development Authority, secretary
general of the King Abdulaziz
Islamic Foundation, honorary
president of the Red Crescent
Friends Committee in Riyadh,
chairman of the board of directors of Al-Birr Association and
its branches in Riyadh, and president of the Supreme Committee for the Endowment of King
Saud University.

In memoriam
King
Abdullah
n K
ing Abdullah oversaw a remarkable period of achievement at
Saudi Aramco during his reign. Whether it was the inauguration of the Shaybah mega-project in 1999 (above left), the realization of his vision to create a world-renowned learning and
research institute in Thuwal (left), the launch of King Abdullah
Sports City in Jiddah (above right) or the inauguration of the
Qatif production complex, King Abdullah provided a steady
and certain hand of guidance.
A visionary who helped transform a company, a nation and its people
The sad passing of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King
Abdullah ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz Al Sa‘ud,
has been greatly felt by all at Saudi
Aramco.
During King Abdullah’s reign since
2005, Saudi Aramco witnessed a glittering record of achievements. King
Abdullah’s unwavering commitment
to steering both the company and the
nation to a higher level of recognition
on the world stage saw major innovation and a list of mega-projects that
evidence his legacy.
King Abdullah’s guidance helped
Saudi Aramco achieve a higher profile in the global petroleum industry,
expanding the company’s international ventures and extending Saudi
Aramco’s reach into downstream activities, including petrochemicals and
associated industries.
Under his leadership, Saudi Aramco forged in-Kingdom joint ventures
in natural gas, embarking on the biggest capital program in its history.
In a remarkable display of technology allied with breathtaking
human ingenuity, Saudi Aramco
brought the 500,000 barrel per
day (bpd) Shaybah project online.
Then Crown Prince, Abdullah inaugurated the facility, as well as
the Dhahran-Riyadh-Qasim multiproduct pipeline and the Ras
Tanura upgrade project.
Additional oil production
capacity was added with the
completion of the 800,000
bpd Qatif-Abu Sa’fah project,
inaugurated by then-Crown
Prince Abdullah in December
2004. The following year,
the Saudi government and
Saudi Aramco unveiled the
most ambitious capital
project in the company’s
history: a slate of crude
oil production expansion
projects that raised the
Kingdom’s maximum sustained output of crude oil
by 2 million bpd to about
12 million bpd.
With domestic demand for natural gas increasing, Saudi Aramco
placed greater emphasis
on finding and producing nonassociated
gas. One of the first tangible results of this
strategy was the Hawiyah Gas Plant, inaugurated by Abdullah in October 2002.
This was soon followed by the Haradh Gas
Plant, inaugurated by Abdullah in January
2004.
The list of achievements recorded by
Saudi Aramco under King Abdullah’s wise
guidance goes on and on.
Saudi Aramco fondly remembers the
occasion of the company’s 75th anniversary celebrations that saw
King Abdullah visit the company’s Dhahran headquarters on
May 20, 2008 — his first visit
to the company as King. His
presence was deeply affecting
for everyone present — Saudi and expatriate employees and their families — and
the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques
appeared genuinely touched by the warm
and affectionate welcome he received.
He expressed gratitude to Saudi Aramco employees past and present, saying:
“Thanks to God who blessed us of his generous gifts as we celebrate the occasion
of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Saudi Aramco; we are so proud
of its achievements and its employees over
all generations. You have also been an example of giving, sincerity and efficiency in
work and in serving the country.”
King Abdullah was committed to reshaping a nation and equipping it to stand
tall on the global stage. At the core of the
King’s vision was an unshakable belief
in the crucial role that education would
play in the development of the nation
and its people.
He took the lead on the creation of a
world-class graduate research university
— King Abdullah University of Science
and Technology, or KAUST.
KAUST stands as a testament to his
ethos. More than 3,000 heads of state,
industry leaders and academics joined
the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques
for the inauguration of his dream in
2009.
The university, he said, in his inaugural address, was the realization of a
“persistent desire” of his and part of the
legacy of Muslim scholars from centuries
past. The ceremony was held on the nation’s 75th National Day and was symbolic of what the occasion meant to King
Abdullah and the country.
“This university … is a continuation of
what distinguished our civilization in its
golden age,” King Abdullah said.
Given a year to deliver a facility in
alignment with the Custodian of the Two
Holy Mosque’s vision of the transformative power of sport for the Kingdom’s
youth, Saudi Aramco answered the call
with the construction of a state-of-theart stadium in Jiddah. King Abdullah
Sports City (KASC) is a monument to Excellence and Citizenship and of what can
be achieved under strong leadership and
collaboration.
The stunning inauguration ceremony on May 1, 2014, mesmerized
a nation and was attended by King
Abdullah. It was symbolic of a
newly confident nation, infused
with belief, and was watched
by millions in Saudi Arabia and
further afield.
King Abdullah’s legacy can be
seen in all of these achievements
and his leadership has inspired a
company, a nation and its people to
realize their dreams and reach their
full potential. His legacy is writ large
across Saudi Arabia.
The company will continue to contribute to the comprehensive development
of Saudi Arabia and its people to reach
the pinnacle of their potential under the
guidance of Custodian of the Two Holy
Mosques, King Salman ibn ‘Abd Al‘Aziz Al Sa’ud.

Young employees key to Chemicals success
SCOTT BALDAUF
DHAHRAN — At the third Chemicals
Young Talent Forum, held Jan. 15 at the
Dhahran Plaza, more than 100 young employees gathered to hear the new opportunities that current market conditions present
for Saudi Aramco.
With the workforce trending younger every year — by 2018, nearly six out of every
10 employees at Saudi Aramco will be under the age of 35 — Chemicals and other
groups are working to engage young staffers early on and providing them with opportunities to interact with senior management,
to network with each other, and to gain a
broader picture of how their individual jobs
and projects fit into the larger corporate
strategy. As with previous events, this year’s
Young Talent Forum included a video montage of interviews with young employees
on global assignments, safety presentations,
team-building exercises, panel discussions
as well as presentations about Chemicals’
Growth Projects, Corporate Planning, and
Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures.
In his opening remarks, Warren W. Wilder, vice president of Chemicals, told the
Young Talents gathered for the event that
the company’s ambitious chemicals strategy
depended on having the right people with
the right capabilities.
“I remain convinced that this is a pivotal decade for the chemicals sector in the
Kingdom and for Saudi Aramco’s role in it,”
Wilder said.
Emphasizing points made in an earlier
speech by president and CEO Khalid A. AlFalih, Wilder added, “By capitalizing on the
abundance of natural resources, cost-effective feedstock pricing, strong regulatory and
industrial infrastructure and close proximity

next 12 will be busy and exciting. I look forward to us working together to make it a
great success for ourselves and for Saudi Aramco,” Wilder said.
The assembled Young Talents at the forum all work for various departments in
the Chemicals admin area, but their specialties range from engineering to marketing to business and finance. As part of their
training program, several are on temporary
assignments at other Saudi Aramco organizations, or in wholly owned subsidiaries such
as the Aramco Trading Co. Meanwhile, others have been temporarily placed at Saudi
Aramco joint ventures such as Sadara, SASREF, SATORP, FREP and Petro Rabigh, as well
as with Saudi Aramco-affiliated companies
in China, Japan, Singapore, Spain, Belgium
and the U.K.

An experiment in a high school
science class a few years ago revealed some very interesting life
lessons, from of all things, a pumpkin.
A freshman class decided to
place a metal band around the outside of the pumpkin to see what,
if any, impact it would have on its
growth. At the end of the growing
season, the students came back to
harvest and study the squash. From
the outside, there was very little
evidence that the restriction had
done much to it. But once the dissection began, they realized that
the inner-workings were dramatically different than that of an ordinary pumpkin.
They noticed that the fibers
and strength of the shell was many
times more thick and durable than
“normal” pumpkins. They concluded that rather than fold to outside
forces, the pumpkin had responded by building tremendous internal
capacity and resilience.

ous — inner strength comes from
personal resolve tempered by life’s
challenges. A critical undergirding
to the strength of our character is
integrity. The concept of integrity,
although commonly held, is anything but commonly understood.
There are all kinds of definitions
and sayings meant to convey the
meaning, but unfortunately they
leave us wanting in terms of know-

how the Chemicals Group was building on
past achievements by creating a new organization that focuses on the organic growth
of chemicals. Al Subayee described progress
on major projects in-Kingdom and out-ofKingdom at various stages of development,
including the Ras Tanura Olefins Project
(RTOP), Amiral (SATORP-II) and the Yanbu’
Integrated Refinery and Petrochemicals Project, in addition to some integrated downstream investments in Asia.
Al Subayee said the collaboration within
the regional downstream industry is critical to bringing about efficiencies, improving
reliability of feedstock availability, reducing
costs and optimizing the use of resources.
One way of collaboration is the creation of
grids for olefins and for hydrogen, similar
to the ones that already exist in Europe and
North America. This is a proven concept that
Saudi Aramco Chemicals is driving in the
Kingdom, starting with Jubail.
Al Subayee highlighted that each of
these mega-projects requires people with
skills and strategic understanding who can
develop these projects to their full potential.
“Developing talent is why we are here
today,” Al Subayee said. Noting that the
company has just recently begun to offer
employees the possibility of earning a master’s degree in petrochemicals, Al Subayee
added, “We are very keen to talk with each
of you and to make sure that you are getting the right development that you need.”
Speaking with The Arabian Sun, Al
Subayee said that it is important for each
employee at Saudi Aramco to look for opportunities that can come from ever-changing market conditions.
“We never shy away from investment
opportunities because of oil prices. We think
sometimes these scenarios can be an opportunity for us because others are shying away
from them,” Al Subayee said.
“The main message of this event is that
we are creating a new chemicals business,
and if you are here, you are at the right
place at the right time,” Al Subayee added.
“We will make sure that everyone, particularly our young employees, is prepared and
gets opportunities to develop.”
ing how to apply it.
One concept that I particularly
like is that Integrity is the inner
force that holds us accountable to
do what is right. It’s like a muscle
that calls into action the needed
characteristic for a situation. For
example, if you receive too much
change at the store, hopefully your
integrity muscle would be strong
enough to activate the honesty response. If the integrity muscle is
too weak, you will keep the money, thereby allowing the muscle to
atrophy. Integrity, like a muscle,
grows with use, but it also decays
with inactivity.
Integrity can also mean wholeness. If there is a brass ring that is
missing a section, it would be classified as a non-integrity object. In
other words, the ring cannot be
trusted to do its job because it is
incomplete.
Human beings also follow the
same principle when integrity
weakens. The end result is that important pieces of ourselves are lost,
thereby creating an ineffective
character and low quality relationships. I choose to think that
integrity is priceless and should
be protected at all costs. But
unfortunately, people have put
exact dollar amounts to their
own. For a year’s wage, many
will deactivate their integrity
so as to receive immediate and
short-lived gain. Sadly, what is
left behind is an incomplete individual that no one can trust.
So how do we strengthen
our integrity? It begins with
keeping promises to ourselves.
Each time we make a commitment and keep it, it builds our
inner strength. We prove ourselves trustworthy to the most
important person — ourself.
Treat commitments as sacred
obligations to be kept regardless of the outside pressures.
Developing this habit will
result in the same super developed inner fortitude as our famous pumpkin.

RT Recreation inaugurates
reopening of bowling alley
RAS TANURA — In December,
Ras Tanura (RT) Recreation held a
grand opening for the newly renovated bowling alley. The bowling alley, which has been a major
hub of the community for several
years, was under renovation since
March.
The opening ceremony was
organized by RT Recreation supervisor Abdulaziz Buainain and his
team, with purple and white balloons creating an archway into the
alley where a beautifully sculpted
cake was waiting to be ceremonially cut.
Abdulaziz Misfer, manager of
the Northern Area Western Region Community Services Department, did the honor of officiating
the ceremony, while the remaining
n
distinguished guests had an opportunity to view the renovations
and test their bowling skills.

a HTC One (M7) camera phone to

MICHAEL SHICK
RAS TANURA — More than
300 runners and supporters
recently gathered on the Ras
Tanura Surf House Patio for the
3rd Annual RT Half Marathon
race briefing.
They had traveled from all
over the world, as far away as
New Brunswick, Maine, Yanbu’
and Riyadh, to show their sportsmanship and test their running
endurance, individually and as
teams, on the three-loop course
around the beach-front community of Ras Tanura.
Shortly after the start, the
first runner on the winning
mixed team “The Runaways,”
Abdullah Al-Joud, was showing
his Olympic form as he was well
ahead of the rest of the pack.
As the race developed, the
well-established rivalry between
the top male runners, Christophe Sargis of Dhahran and
Pierre Breuer of Ras Tanura,
turned into a shoulder to shoulder competition into the third
and final lap. This is where Sargis displayed his top form, crossing the finish line as champion
of the day with the time of
1:21:11. Second place went to
Breuer at 1:22.33, and third to
Nawar Al-Otaibi with a time of
1:28.15.
The women’s individual race
was just as exciting. The winner, Shannon LeBeuf, came
across the line at 1:40.56, and
was closely followed by Denise
Mitchell (1:41.07) throughout
n
the whole race. Third place went
to Ras Tanura’s Maria Cowan
with a time of 1:48.18.
The team competition was
broad, and the women’s category extremely competitive with a
total of 11 teams. However, the
winning team, “Nada Wellness”
(Nadia Hinedi, Amani Haikal
and Carrie Bisaura), ran a strong
event and proved untouchable
with a winning time of 1:44.14.
In the under 20 age group
teams, Peter Issa, Jesus Perez
and Jevon Flippin took top honors. In a remarkable showing,
“Team 11,” which consisted of
Alden Morton, Jean-Paul Lugo-Carrasco and Bryan LugoCarrasco, turned in a standout
performance. With each team
member only 11 years old, they
showed that it’s never too early

While the top runners enjoyed their successes, post-race
massages and breakfast were
available to all.
After the last runner crossed
the finish line, the award ceremony was held in the East
Lounge. The Ras Tanura Fitness
Group congratulated the winners for an outstanding performance, excellent sportsmanship
and outstanding support of the
event.
Thanks also went out for the
never-ending support from all
the volunteers, the Ras Tanura
Recreation Department, the Ras
Tanura Security Department for
maintaining a safe event, the RT
Clinic for medical support, and
RT Community Services for upkeep of the course and community in general.
