Carolina, Thomas Burke, from the temporary capital at Hillsborough. Additionally, Fanning was captured by Patriot forces 14 times
throughout the war, each time escaping or receiving a pardon. After the British defeat in the war, Fanning fled to Canada, where he
was elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1791 to 1801 representing Kings County. After being convicted of
rape in 1801, Fanning was expelled from New Brunswick, and settled in Nova Scotia, where he lived the remainder of his life.

The Imperial Federation was a late-19th early-20th century proposal to create a federated union in
place of the existing British Empire. Canadian advocates of imperial federation, are called
"Canadian Imperialists" and their ideology "Canadian Imperialism" in Canadian historiography
since Carl Berger 1970's book The Sense of Power identified this as a separate ideology from
Canadian nationalism. This pamphlet is Fenety's argument against Imperial Federation and the
negative consequences of such a union or federation.

In 1920, MacAskill became a photographer for the Commercial Photo Service and by 1925 was the proprietor of this
establishment. It was probably during this period that he met Elva Abriel,
also a commercial photographer, who may have done some work for the
Commercial Photo Service (C.P.S.). They were married in Enfield in 1926.
Later MacAskill (1893-1956) became a world renowned Nova Scotia
photographer who illustrated the romance of the sea as no one has done
before or after. His photographs have won hundreds of national and
international awards and maybe found on walls throughout the world.

Sir John Sparrow David Thompson, Prime Minister of Canada was born in Halifax
on Nov.10,1845. Trained as a lawyer he began his political career as a Halifax
alderman in 1871. He entered provincial politics as a Conservative MLA and was

Attorney-General from 1878 to1882 and was Premier briefly in 1882. When his government lost the
election in that year, he was made a Judge of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court. He converted to
Roman Catholicism after marrying his wife Annie in 1870. Sir John A. Macdonald persuaded him to
enter the federal Conservative cabinet as Minister of Justice in 1885 and Thompson quickly became
Macdonald's right hand man. Although he was the logical successor when the Old Chief died in
1891, Thompson yielded to Senator J.J.C. Abbott. The next year he did take over as Prime Minister
on November 24, 1892. Although Canada was wracked by the Manitoba Schools Question, the
gracious Thompson kept his government under control and continued to win by-elections. On Dec.
12, 1894 while waiting to greet Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle, he died of a heart attack. With
the death of Thompson the Liberals under Laurier defeated the Conservatives in 1896. John
Thompson is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery Halifax N.S.
