Urban Cycling Studio Gets a Makeover
Urban Cycling is one of the most popular classes at the
JCC. We want to make it more accessible for members
and are proud to announce that we have added 10 new
LIVESTRONG bikes. These bikes are inspired and designed
by seven-time Tour De France winner Lance Armstrong and
his Livestrong Foundation to fight cancer. Adding these bikes
to the 10 Rev Master bikes, designed by former Tour De
France winner Greg LeMond, brings the total to a whopping
20 bikes. We hope to accommodate many more members
in cycling classes. Please stop by and take a look at the new
Studio located in the upper level of Sports & Wellness. For

whole new site. After much planning and input the JCC’s site will

Children’s Author
and Illustrator

Children ages 3, 4 and 5 and their parents
are invited to join in a story reading with
Rosemary Wells, children’s author and illustrator
of more than 60 books. She will preview bedtime
stories from her newest Max and Ruby book, due
out in November.
Rosemary Wells has a keen understanding of
what matters to young children. Her appealing
stories capture the emotional charge of a child’s
world. While her stories are primarily directed
towards children, Ms. Wells knows that they are
not her only audience. As a writer and illustrator,
she strives to “appeal enough to the sense of
humor in the mother and father or teacher or
older brother or grandmother who is reading so
the child will
feel the laughter and the
enjoyment
in the reader’s voice and
want to
read the book again

One of the longest running programs in the
Sports and Wellness Department is PACE Cross
Conditioning. Classes are offered several times
during the week in our studio. In keeping with

Ben’s Bells at the J
Our very own Mary Byrnes was honored with a Ben’s Bell in August. Ben’s Bells promote kindness and
community. It was started in 2003 in memory of Ben Mare Packard who died of croup.
Member Barbara Goldberg nominated Mary because of her work with older members at the J,
specifically her 85-year-old mother Bertha Segal. Barbara wrote in her nomination, “Mary knows if
my mom or any other member just does not look 100 percent or needs to sit down
during class…Mary nudges her seniors to push a
bit harder, walk a smidge more or just remember
to get out of the house and come to class.”
Mary has been a valuable member of the Sports
& Wellness team for 20 years. Her work with the
seniors and the PACE classes are incredible; plus she
teaches a mean urban cycling class! Congratulations
to Mary for being recognized for her work!

Tucson Shines at JCC Maccabi Games
The Tucson Maccabi Delegation attended the
JCC Maccabi Games in Omaha, NE for the 15th
year. The games attract thousands of Jewish
youth each year from across the U.S., Mexico,
Canada, Israel and this year, Hungary.
The Tucson team included 14 athletes who
competed in six different sports: basketball,
Benny Louchheim, Ben Klinkenberg, Harrison
Avigdor, Reagan Glynn, Braden Stuchen, Josh
Goldberg and Austen Berens; soccer, Kendall
Karon and Shawn Spitzer; tennis, Daniel
Goldstein; swimming, Bonnie Diamond and
Dakota Kordsiemon; and golf, Charlie Goode
and Kevin Goldstein.
“Our team made the city of Tucson and the JCC
very proud. They competed to the best of their
abilities and had a great time socializing with
all the other athletes in Omaha,” said delegation
head Stu Epstein.
Bonnie and Dakota won 23 medals, mostly gold,
in all their races. On the links Kevin Goldstein
won gold in the 15-16 age category while Charlie
Goode took home a silver medal in the 13-14 age
group. Kevin won the closest to the pin with a
shot only 22 inches away and Charlie won the
longest drive. Kevin topped off the week with
another gold medal in the team competition.
Kendall, playing on a mixed team with St Louis
and Northern Virginia, carried the soccer team
to the bronze medal game losing in overtime.
Shawn was mixed with the Phoenix Soccer squad
and made it to the semi-finals. Daniel Goldstein,
competing in his first set of games, made it to the
quarter finals, finishing with a 3-3 record. Daniel
is the 3rd Goldstein brother to represent Tucson
at the games!
We are extremely excited about next year’s
JCC Maccabi Games, which will be held
July 24-August 5, 2011 in Israel. This two-week
event will include a tour of Israel while the
athletes are there. Sports that will be offered are
basketball, bowling, soccer, swimming, table
tennis, tennis and volleyball. If you are a Jewish
teen ages 14-17 and are interested in this exciting
once-in-a-lifetime adventure, please contact Stu

possible. Space is limited. Parents can experience
Israel with their teen! Parent and family tour
packages will be available to attend opening
ceremonies and final competitions.
Shalom Sesame:
Hanukkah Episode Premiere • Sunday, December 5
Shalom Sesame is a new DVD series set on
Rechov Sumsum, a street in Israel, in a Sesamecreated neighborhood with a mix of Isrealis. The
cast of characters includes religious and secular,
Russian and Ethiopian immigrants, Jews and
Arabs, adults and children all living alongside a
cast of Muppets – including Oscar the Grouch’s
Israeli cousin, Moishe Oofnik. The beloved
muppet, Grover is a visitor to Rechov Sumsum.
Through his Israeli experience, the young viewer
will be exposed to the diversity of Israel and
Jewish life.
In honor of the series’ launch, ECE will be joining
other JCCs throughout the United States with a
broadcast of the premiere of Shalom Sesame’s
30-minute Hanukkah episode. In addition to
the free broadcast, there will be other activities
to supplement the Hanukkah celebration
and highlight our early childhood education
program.

Young Jewish Tucson (YJT)
YJT is a group for young Jewish adults ages 2245. If you are new to Tucson or just looking to
reconnect with the community YJT is for you!
Each month YJT plans several events in the
following categories:
• Community Service Projects
• Arts & Culture
• Shabbat and Holiday Events
• Sports and Outdoor Activities
• Dinner and Happy Hour
Formerly associated with GesherCity, YJT is the
place to be if you want to get involved with the
community at any level. We have a Facebook
group that is open for anyone to join. We also
have a weekly listserv with event updates and
reminders. We are always looking for new ideas,
so if you have a suggestion, please feel free
to share! If you have any questions regarding

the Mission
of the JCC
Like all non-profit organizations,
the Tucson JCC relies on the
guidance of its Board of Directors in
making decisions, raising funds and
planning for the future. Directors
are also the J’s Ambassadors, sharing
the J’s story in our community.
Most people know that the Tucson
JCC has a committed and active
Board of Directors, but not
everyone knows how people come
to serve.
In order to find and
develop the right leaders in the best
way, the J formed the Committee
on Directors and Governance about
two years ago. Phil Pepper, a former
Board Chair, currently chairs the
Committee. It is comprised of
current board members, leaders
representing the broader general
community and JCC staff.
One important Committee task
involves identifying people to serve
on Task Forces, Committees and
the Board of Directors. Committee
members interview prospective
leaders to learn about their skills,
and interests as well as find good
“fits” at the J. Committee members
share the goals of the organization,
review current challenges and
clearly outline expectations for
Task Force, Committee and Board
service. The Committee also
oversees the training of current and
future leadership. The J is looking
for people who are prepared,
engaged, and accountable to serve.
Some of the specific qualities the J
is seeking in its leaders are:
• A strong commitment to the
Mission, Vision and Values of the
JCC
• A willingness to make a personal
financial contribution to the JCC
• The ability to commit time
and energy to a Task Force,
Committee or the Board
• Interest in fundraising and
community outreach
The JCC is always seeking
committed volunteers.
