I am sitting here

at the front counter of our
service center,
cente and it snowing like there is
no tomorrow. Here in New England, this is
by far the harshest time of year to be in this
business. The simplest of jobs become an
arduous adventure because of the weather,
combined with the impassability of roads and
driveways, then mixed in with a heavy dose
of holiday stress. This time of year can easily
bring out the worst in people….or sometimes
the best.
As business owners, we are task-orientated
people. Service calls, warranty claims, parts
ordering, etc. all are tasks that are planned
out to maximize our time. Nameless, faceless
service calls appear on our dispatch reports
and are scheduled by zip code, not
necessarily need. Parts are ordered by
another report, on-line, without any human
intervention. Warranty or Third Party claims
are done the same way. No real interaction
with anyone unless there is a problem that
cannot be solved via e-mail. Even inter-company
correspondence is done via e-mail instead of
face to face.
Now I love technology especially as it
relates to efficiency. A report that actually tells
me something is happening is awesome. I
am not saying we need to go backwards to
the Stone Age. The one thing I personally
want to do this next year is attempt to put a
little more of the personal touch in my daily
interactions. I fear that sometimes we are a little
too reliant on the keyboard and are losing that
personal touch that was the foundation of our
respective businesses.
Think about it for a second. Every time you see
a story in the news about an upstart company,
they say the same thing. The personal touch
is why I go there, I feel like I am not just a
number, they actually care about my business,
etc. THIS IS WHAT YOUR CLIENTS WANT.
This is what made them your clients in the
first place. Now I realize with all the pressures
and increased volume you can’t be involved in
every transaction. Many of you have people
that handle specialized tasks and you do not
have the time or the energy to take on more.
But some how we need to reach out to the
people that helped us grow our business
and let them know that you still care about
their business. Give a call to your parts
distributor and thank them if they did a good
job, or discuss any outstanding issues. Maybe
spend an hour or two answering the service
center phone. Contact your manufacturer rep
by phone instead of e-mail, discuss the trend
of service as they see it. All these things are
the element of the human touch that makes
people feel special. Why do you think that
NPSC is such a special event? Because we
are all under one roof, shoulder to shoulder,
discussing what is happening in our industry.

In Memoriam
GERRY MCCANN CET/CSM, EHF 1943-2007
If you did not have the privilege to meet
Gerry, his name is synonymous with independent service and NESDA. He ran a
successful service center, McCann's Electronics in Metairie, Louisiana. His building was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina
and many in the NESDA family waited
anxiously to hear from him and his lovely wife and companion Faye. Gerry was
able to e-mail everyone from a hotel
room in Pensacola and update us that
he was indeed OK but his building and
business was essentially wiped out for
the time being. There was a paragraph
in that e-mail that said everything you
needed to know about Gerry. Although
he was in a hotel room far from home,
the water rising and both his home was
underwater and his business was damaged, he was more concerned that he
hadn't heard from any of his employees, payroll was the next day and he
knew they needed money to survive.
That says a lot about the man.

he NESDA family was deeply saddened to
learn of tthe passing of long-time NESDA

on December 26,
2 2007. Gerry was the owner of
McCann Electronics in Metairie, LA, a Certified
Service Center. He was a Life Member of both
NESDA and ISCET, the first CSM (Certified Service
Manager) in Louisiana, and a Continuing Charter Member of NESDA. Elected to the National
Electronics Industry Hall of Fame in 2004,
Gerry McCann was 64.
It would take several pages to list all the
achievements of Gerry McCann and
how they positively affected NESDA and its members. Gerry was
a visionary, always looking for
ways to advance NESDA and
make it stronger.
As for his association with NESDA, Gerry was always willing to give. He developed and ran the incredibly successful
"Best Ideas Contest" every year and it
didn't matter what time, day or night,
he would schedule the class and people
would show up. Usually before the convention, every member would receive
a packet from Gerry, filled with useful
info and inspirational messages geared
towards independent service. He was
soft-spoken, but a tough businessman
willing to take hard, sometimes not
popular steps in his drive to keep independent service alive.
Gerry and wife Faye had
attended NESDA conventions for many years and
had been involved in several areas of NESDA life,
including hosting the Best
Ideas sessions at NPSC for
several years. After battling
a health issue in 2006, Gerry
was improving but unable to
attend NPSC 2007.
My heartfelt condolences go out to
Faye and their family. Gerry was one of
a kind and it was my privilege to have
met and worked with him over the past
ten years.

In addition to his NESDA activities,
Gerry had a Saturday morning radio
show called “Living With Home Electronics” that
began on a New Orleans radio station in 1983. It
was a call-in show, where consumers could call
in with their electronics and computer questions
and get them answered. Gerry was big on sharing
knowledge.
The news of Gerry’s passing has taken
my breath away. I have never met a
more honorable, sincere, compassionate person in my life. Gerry had incredible courage and perseverance; he
stood as a role model for myself and
many others.
Whenever I thought life was getting too
tough, I would think of Gerry and his
family and how they not only survived
but excelled, after some of the most
devastating trials that a man could be
asked to endure. He truly was a wonderful person who will live forever in my
memory.
When McCann Electronics was incapacitated for
a few weeks by Hurricane Katrina and then Rita,
Gerry and his employees got back on their feet
as quickly as they could. The business was not
destroyed, but their home was left inhabitable,
and after they returned to the area they took up
residence in a conference room in one of their
buildings until they could start the rebuilding.
Prior to Katrina, McCann Electronics consisted of
5 buildings and 30 employees.

This intelligent, caring and gentle man has earned
his place in history as much for what he has given
to others as for what he has accomplished himself.
Professionally, Gerry McCann ranks among the giants of the industry. Not necessarily in business
size or volume, but in visionary accomplishments
and staying power. He and his equally meritorious
wife, Faye, built a business from the garage up
to one of the country’s most revered enterprises.
They provided old-fashioned consumer value to
win customer loyalty, respect, and fair rewards
for their employees to maintain personnel stability. Gerry also kept McCann Electronics
on the cutting edge of technology.
He did not see change as something to be shunned, but rather
embraced every new innovation to become recognized as
the technology leader in his
area. He was smart enough
to expand when he had the
opportunity and personnel
to do so, but also the wisdom to pull back when the
economy or other factors
deemed such prudence.
His embrace of technology
took him outside of his business to create a local radio
show that has been running
for more than 20 years. He and
his family have been extremely
active in local church, charitable,
and civic affairs.
Via telephone from his home or office, he made
himself available to other business owners across
the country for one-on-one consultation on practically any business or technological topic. He
(and usually Faye) frequently traveled to local,
state, and regional association functions without
pay, to present seminars on Professional Service
Management.
Within the association, he generally shunned politics and the limelight, but has nevertheless contributed to the betterment of the association and
the industry in ways far exceeding those of more
illustrious persons. Though reluctantly elected
to very few national association offices, he has
served on numerous committees, chaired convention workshops and information panels, emceed
meal function festivities, hosted and perfected
(with wife Faye) the acclaimed annual Best Ideas
Contest at NPSC, and has generally performed
practically any chore requested of him.
Gerry attended elementary, high school and a
year of college at Loyola University in New Orleans. In 1961, he entered Gulf Radio and TV
School which he attended for two years. After
graduating from Gulf, in 1963, he worked as an
outside technician for Denton’s TV Service, a
service center in uptown New Orleans. In 1964,
Gerry married his high school sweetheart,
Faye. They have 3 children and several grandchildren.

More than a hobby, for Gerry, it has been a labor
of love.
Gerry developed an apprenticeship exam which
was first given as a test at the “Electronic Olympics” between technical schools in the New Orleans area. He has also served as technical advisor to Delgado and Phillips Community Colleges
and New Orleans & Jefferson Vo-Tech schools.
He also helped write the Louisiana State License
test for technicians and satellite installers.
Gerry wrote a sports column for the school newspaper while he was attending Gulf Radio and TV
School. His local weekly radio show, “Living with
Home Electronics,” has been on the air every Saturday morning for 20+ years. He also produced
a 13-week television show by the same name
which aired locally on Cox Cable in 1986. Gerry
believes in sharing information he thinks will help
others, as well as his now famous “Sayings” he
In my opinion, Gerry’s greatest gift
was that he was a visionary. He had
an uncanny ability to see how events
would lead the industry. He was a great
listener and always made people feel
special. His “Best Idea Contest” was a
perfect example of his talents. For years
he (and Faye) helped us all share ideas
and business practices with our fellow
members. No matter what the idea was,
Gerry and Faye made you feel like you
had contributed a gem. Everyone who
attended the “contest” came away a
winner (and had a great time doing it).
His civic activities include serving as
a board member of St. Vincent’s
Home for Girls in New Orleans,
serving as a board member of
the southern Louisiana Association of Business, and
serving as President of the
Maple Ridge Improvement
Association.
The day before Thanksgiving
in 1967, Denton’s TV Service
closed. The day after Thanksgiving, Gerry and Faye started McCann Electronics in the
garage of their home. The
first employee they hired is
still with them.
McCann Electronics was
moved to a main highway
location in 1971, where it
still sits. As the business grew,
other buildings on the block were
annexed. Also during the 1970’s,
Gerry and Faye purchased 3 existing
service centers; Southern TV in Metairie,
Stevens TV in uptown New Orleans and Video
World in Chalmette, LA. Southern and Video
World were retail stores and had videotape rental departments. Stevens TV was service only.
These were closed when the oil bust ruined the
New Orleans-area economy in the late 1980’s.
Throughout the early years in business, Gerry
attended the NESDA management schools and
seminars put on by C. J. Rucker and other NESDA
colleagues. Once established in business, he felt
a great need to pay back to the association for
the help he had been given, so he traveled to
help state associations with the knowledge he
had gained. He conducted business management seminars throughout Florida and California,
driving from city to city during the day and conducting seminars in the evening. Seminars were
also conducted for state association conventions
in Ohio, Kansas, Missouri, Georgia, Texas and
Washington state.
We’ve all been blessed to have had
Gerry McCann as a member of our organization and as our friend. He ran one
of the most successful service organizations in the country. He hosted a radio
show answering questions from listeners about computers and consumer
electronics. Gerry held many positions
within the industry for both NESDA and
NARDA.
I will miss Gerry very much. I will miss
his quiet, gentle guidance and his willingness to listen. I will miss his mailings, which included ideas and pertinent inspirational quotes. They always
made me think.
Business associations and activities include Past President
and Executive of the Year for
the Greater New Orleans Executive Association (1989), Past
President of ETA of Louisiana,
Past President of Louisiana Electronics Service Dealers Association, Past
President and Board member of Appliance
and Electronics Association, Past President of
NASD, member of NARDA, and Board member of
SPACE (Society for Private and Commercial Earth
Stations).
But most of all I will miss his “Attitude,”
which was always one of class and professionalism.

Gerry was an example for all of us. He
was strong in his faith, always willing
to help anyone and everyone he could.
This past year he overcame the ravages of a destructive hurricane only to
encounter major health problems that
consume most with self concern. That
wasn’t Gerry, he never quit on anything,
especially for something of a personal
nature. While receiving major medical treatments he continued serving in
many capacities. As President of the National Electronics Industry Hall of Fame,
he was always the most encouraging
individual anyone is likely to encounter.
Even when devastated by severe medical treatments, he constantly thought of
others and was apologetic for being unable to attend NPSC because of them.
Among the awards, Gerry was honored by NESDA as Man of the Year in 1989, received the Leo
P. Shumavon Award in 1986 and again in 2003.
He served as chairman of the NESDA Computer
Committee and was honored with the Outstanding Committee Chairperson Award in 1996.

Paul was the owner of Mount

Satellite Systems in Boydton, VA, and a past president and very active member of VPEA.
Paul was a graduate of Bloomfield High School and attended RCA Institute in New York City.
In addition to being a television repairman with Admiral Corporation, he was an electronics
instructor at Southside Virginia Community College and a technology teacher at Greensville
High School.
Paul is survived by two sisters, two brothers and many nieces and nephews.

FABIAN CONTINUES HIS SUPPORT OF NESDA

hris Fabian EHF, President of Professional
Service Solutions, LLC, was recently elected
to the Consumer Electronics Association’s Small
Business Council (SBC) Board of Directors. His
term on the CEA SBC board commences in January, 2008. Fabian will be attending his first formal
SBC board meeting at CES 2008 in Las Vegas.
Chris is a former Vice President of Service with
Toshiba and Hitachi, and a former Director of Professional Service at Philips. He has been a longtime supporter of NESDA and an vocal advocate
for the Independent Service Community. When
asked about his new role on the CEA SBC board
of directors, Fabian said, “I welcome the opportunity to continue to strongly support small business

finery, that all the small detail is overlooked, and in fact some of the large focus material is lost. That’s exactly how I feel about the
parade of technology for the future. We’re looking at such mind boggling advents as the first
genome engineering of a new species!

energy in nanoscale materials that exceeds current car-size batteries, yet is miniscule in size
comparison!
• The highways of tomorrow with the ability to
use GPS technology to support the automobiles
of the day on auto-pilot!
All of this will be aimed at the you and “mes” of
tomorrow. No wonder the drugs to relieve tension, anxiety and schitzo’s are selling well these
days. Back off for just a minute…take stock
of yourself and the world around you; then put
your chin out, straighten your back, and walk
bravely into tomorrow with the attitude of “I
think I’m going to like it!”
“The Changing Face of Electronics
Education” is the title of the presentation that
ISCET has made in several places since 2005.
It is a look at the evolution of electronics education as a prelude to how the many changes
in electronics have impacted today’s electronics education, and what must be done to once
again vitalize electronics as a viable career
choice for today’s youth. Del Whiteman, ISCET
Director Educational Consultant, and I usually
give these presentations. Del has presented
by himself on some occasions, and is the lead
presenter in any case. We presented the latest
version (yes it does change almost yearly) at
the ACTE (Association for Career and Technical
Education) convention held Dec 13-15, 2007.
There were some 60 persons attended, and
more would have been there, but at 60 it was
SRO. Many new friends were made, as well as
old faces revisited. Electronics education is at
a cross-road today. ISCET has spent resources
to keep up with what is necessary to help elecProService - December 2007

tronics blossom once again, and the “Changing
Face” is one of these endeavors. We will present
it again in January 2008 at the TIVA (Texas Industrial Vocational Association) Winter Conference in Houston, TX)
Today at ISCET finds us at the end of November with a slight gain in income over the last
year, but a significant difference in overall operations. We’ve gained a lot of ground over a
year ago, and expect a much more significant
gain next year because of the programs that
have been put in motion in 2007. We expect to
fashion and present our ISCET Program and
Curricula Certification in 2008…and are already talking to several organizations about this
service.

to meet the challenges of today in electronics and appliance servicing education. If you

hile ISCET
ISCE could not pose as an expert
in Career & Technology Education (CTE),
we can reaffirm our position that no certification
agency can deny its responsibility to cooperate
with the CTE programs in public, private, trade
schools and organizations.
In addition, we can’t sidestep our responsibility to offer educational opportunities to anyone who, for one reason or another, is not a
candidate for local public or private educational
opportunities.
ISCET has stood firm on this view for many
years. Only recently has it enjoyed the ability to
place up-to-date material in the public, private,
trade schools and organizations as well as the
public as a whole through ISCET’s Online Learning (OLL) system. The OLL is a web-based system that allows economical and efficient use of
the ISCET learning material by individuals.
Volumes have been written concerning CTE programs in the United States and abroad. The one
thing on which all agree is that the purpose of
all these offerings is to equip students with the
knowledge and ability to apply for and achieve
employment in the field of choice. In the case
of ISCET, this choice is ELECTRONICS and allied
fields. The fundamental purpose of all CTE is
to equip the student with knowledge that will
offer success in securing an entry level position
for which training was provided or prepare for
further post-secondary training.
In today’s commercial structure, specialization is common in most all disciplines. Training cannot cover all areas at the same time,
so a good program must start with very basic
electronics and progress towards specific employment or degree goals. In this manner a
student can be trained toward accepting entrylevel employment and then continuing to study
toward a higher goal. If pursuing a degree,
he may study for the level he desires, staying
all the while within the competency concepts
already developed.
Another aspect of involvement for both educators and certification providers is the marketing
of secondary school graduates that are not immediately going on to post-secondary schools.
This requires development of links to industry
to determine what is required in various levels
of employment provided by the various industries from which competencies are developed
to properly chart both curricula and third-party
certification. The link between academia and
industry is a sort of “clearing house” that would
take the top 10-15% of CTE students in electronics (may include any course that includes
some electronics education) and presenting
them to industry as available. Once industry
sees what we have to offer, they will be anxious
to work with us and seek out some of the students for entry-level employment in the slots for
which they are trained.

It is time that CTE educators teamed with
industry nationwide through third party providers of competency-based certifications and
curricula to score a win-win for students and
electronics alike.
Presently, there is nothing available to satisfy the
“clearing house” described above. The competencies partially exist in the ISCET ESA Program,
but entire training paths must be developed to
provide for the attainment of the goals in entrylevel job preparation. Goals for progressing to
Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees already exist.
Melding into workable competency paths is yet
to be accomplished. It is hoped that programs
can be developed between NCEE (National Coalition for Electronics Education) & industry to
accomplish these goals.
