Mississippi’s public schools work in myriad ways
to communicate with their local communities, and on
Thursday, some of those efforts were recognized.
“We have so many great programs and people in our
schools, and this is one way to honor their hard work in
the area of communications,” said Sandi Beason, public
information officer in the Clinton Public School District
and president of the Mississippi School Public Relations
Association.
During the awards dinner Thursday evening at the
Fairview Inn, school districts and school public relations
professionals across the state were honored for their
publications, marketing efforts and online communications. The recognitions are part of MSPRA’s annual
Awards of Excellence program.

GHS Band Receives
Superior Ratings

most recent Sweepstakes Award.

On Thursday February 28th, the
Grenada High School Symphonic Winds,
under the direction of Mr. Barry Rogers,
traveled down to Pearl, Mississippi, to
participate in the 2013 MHSAA State
Concert Evaluation. The Symphonic
Winds is the premier concert ensemble
for the Grenada Band Program and is
comprised of approximately 70 students.
In just 6 weeks of rehearsal time, Mr.
Rogers and the students prepared three
concert selections to play for a panel of
three judges.
The band also had to demonstrate their
skills in sight reading. On site at Pearl
High School, the students were given a
piece of music they had never seen. They
had just 11 minutes to talk about the new
piece and then perform it for a panel of
three additional judges.
After much hard work, the Grenada
Band program was awarded the
Sweepstakes Award for the 4th
consecutive year. The Sweepstakes
Award is the highest and only award
given to the state’s band programs by the
Mississippi Bandmasters Association. In
order to receive the Sweepstakes Award,
Grenada’s band program had to receive
superior ratings from every judge at
Marching Band, Concert Band, and Sight
Reading evaluation.

Discovery Lab Begins Unit MAE Awards GSD Teacher

The students at GUES have been learning about power in the Discovery Lab
during a recent unit titled, “Powering
Up.” Throughout the unit, the students
focused on Newton’s Laws of Motion
by investigating the motion of an object
in terms of its position, and direction
of motion, and speed. The students also
looked at alternate energy sources and
focused on wind power.
The students began the unit with a
laptops lesson, completing interactive modules that related to energy and
power. The students in the lab have access to Discovery Lab Director Melody
Shaw’s website to complete all laptop
lessons. This website has an individual
page that is designed each year for the
students. They can access lessons learned
in the lab from home to show parents or
advance their learning. The website is

Following the laptop lesson the students learned that in the United States
there are over 70,000 jobs available due
to advancements in wind power and
about the top twenty states that are producing energy through wind farms.
To continue learning about wind
power, the students worked in teams
and assembled a windmill. The students
tested blade angles, number of blades,
and direction.
In another visit, the students learned
about Newton’s third law of motion by
making rubber band airplanes and testing
them. The airplanes allowed the students
to see that when there is a force by one
side, there will be opposite and equal
force by the other side, causing each side
to move in opposite directions.
The Discovery Lab has begun collecting aluminum cans to use for the final
lesson of the unit. Students, teachers, and
community members all helped, collecting over the targeted goal of 650 cans in
three weeks. The cans were transformed
into pop can speedsters. Each student
made a speedster and explored how elastic potential energy is stored in a twisted
rubber band and converted to kinetic
energy. The students enjoyed testing and
racing their speedsters. The Discovery
Lab thanks everyone who helped in collecting cans during the unit.
