Summer has finally arrived! Hopefully by now you have dusted off those vintage VW’s and
had them on the road. If not, the June meeting will be a great opportunity to show them off. Our
June meeting will be annual summer picnic meeting. We will be having it at Blendon Woods Metro
Park (full details on separate page in this newsletter).
Volunteers! Volunteers! We need volunteers! I will be at the June meeting with the infamous
black book, also known as the volunteer sign-up sheets. We still have shifts that needs covered,
so if you have not signed up yet, it would be greatly appreciated if you would sign-up at the June
meeting. I would also like to thank everyone that has signed up so far. We have always had enough
help, but we would like to make sure we have most of the times covered. You may be wondering
why Marilyn is not doing this. Well she has passed the torch to me to be the volunteer coordinator. I do not want to let her down, so please be sure to sign-up.
With Volksfest 25 only two months away, we still need a trophy design. Please put on those
creative hats and see what you can come up with. Please bring them to the June meeting for everyone
to see. Hopefully we will have enough entries to take a vote and have a winner. I was hoping to see our club members take more road trips this summer. It could be just for
a couple of hours or all day. If anyone has any ideas or would like to coordinate one, please let us
know at the June meeting. Have a safe summer!

Attention Members!
June Meeting will be: Social at the Shelter House!
The COVVC June monthly meeting will be a picnic at the
Blendon Woods Metro Park. The ‘Dogwood Shelter’ has
been reserved for our use and is available from 4:00 to 9:00.
Come early and stay late! We will plan to serve food around
7:00 or so, once everyone has arrived.
A potluck supper is being planned. Hot dogs, hamburders, condiments and buns are being provided by
several board members. You’re welcome to chip in a couple of dollars if you like, but not necessary. We ask
that folks with last names A through L bring a side dish or salad to share. Folks with last names M through
Z bring dessert. Or, if you have a special dish you want, just bring that! Please bring your own drinks –NO
ALCOLHOL! Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the Metro Parks.
The Blendon Woods Metro Park is located off State Route 161 at Little Turtle Way on the Northeast side
of Columbus. If you don’t want to drive your Vintage VW on the freeway, you can get to the park using
Dublin-Granville Rd. (‘old’ SR 161) from Hamilton Rd. on the east, or Cherry Bottom Rd. on the west.

The shelter house has a dedicated parking lot and plenty of picnic tables, so dust off those VW’S, maybe
grab a bag chair for relaxing and come join YOUR club for some social time at the shelter house!
The Volkswagen Logo..........
The Volkswagen logo is widely accepted as one of the most memorable and popular logos in history. It
was originally designed and in use since 1938, undergoing significant modifications in 1996 and 2000.
The true origin of the emblem is often debated. While some researchers credit Franz Xaver Reimspeiss,
a Porsche employee of the firm, as the sole creator of the iconic mark, others maintain that it was Martin
Freyer who came up with the original design and consequently won a design competition held for company employees.
The Volkswagen logo comprises of the company’s initials – a “V” placed over a “W” – and both these letters interact superbly with each other. These letters
are surrounded by a circle of the same line weight,
which maintains the perfect amount of “air” in the
negative spaces so as to retain legibility, clarity and
effectiveness. The current slogan of the company,
“Das Auto.”, is also sometimes placed under the
emblem.
The color blends and the implied three-dimensionality were introduced to the Volkswagen logo in
2000.The blue color in the Volkswagen logo symbolizes excellence, reliability and class – whereas
the white color depicts nobility, purity and charm.

Checking the Brake Pedal Freeplay
This is one of those simple things that most, but not all VW people are aware of. There needs to
be a “click” of freeplay in the brake pedal for the system to function properly. Too much freeplay,
and you may have a low pedal. Too little freeplay and the master cylinder compensating port will
be blocked in the MC bore, causing the brakes to not release properly when warm. I am amazed
when I work on VW’s that I see this simple adjustment extremely loose or tight so often. If the
car is used infrequently or rusty, the pedal pivot may be sticking and not allowing the pedal to
return properly.
Adjusting it is not as simple as it looks on a Type 1, however, as
the stroke of the pedal as well as pedal height need to be taken into
account. If the pushrod is adjusted without taking this into account
you could extend the pushrod too far, allowing it to fall out of the
turnbuckle. One car I worked on lately had the pushrod holding
on by a single thread into the turnbuckle! First, check the Bentley
manual for specs on your car. If you’re working on a Type 1 verify
the correct travel of the pedal, which is 200mm on later cars but not
stated for early cars. If the travel is correct, adjust the pedal stop to
correct this. On an early bus there is no adjustment for the pedal
stop which makes things easier, you simply adjust the pushrod to
get the correct freeplay in the pedal. The spec is 5-7mm checked at
the pedal and 1mm checked at the pushrod.
While you’re there, verify the clevis pin between the pushrod and the brake pedal is in good shape
and the cotter pin is present. If the pushrod needs to be removed it may be necessary to loosen or
remove the master cylinder or the pedal assembly. VW engineered this with safety in mind- even
if the clevis pin falls out the pushrod can’t really be removed easily. It’s a big hassle to remove
the pedal assembly because it requires removal of the clutch cable wingnut in the rear of the car.
I commonly loosen the two master cylinder retaining bolts and slid the MC forward a fraction of
an inch to gain the needed clearance to remove the pushrod.
Warm weather is here, get that car out and join one of the many VW cruises which take place.

- The Easley’s were in charge of this May meeting.
- No trophy designs were submitted, so the design contest has been post-poned
until the June meeting.
- Show T-shirts and flyers are available (only to members) until the show.
- Show information is appearing in The Samba website, Hot VW’s magazine and Hemmings Motor News.
- Members were encouraged to volunteer to work the show. Ryan Cisco has the black book.
- Committee reports:
Treasurer : Account balances are: $11500 in savings and $400 in checking
Membership: We have 175 members.
- Everyone was reminded that the club is still taking donations for Kids n Kamp in memory of
Tom Kern.
- The next breakfast meeting is scheduled for May 30th at 9 a.m. We will be at Louie’s restaurant, 4453 Cemetary Road in Hilliard.
- The June meeting will be a picnic at Blendon Woods in the Dogwood Shelter. Details to be
announced in the June newsletter.
- Ted Di Biasi, was in attendance for the first time. He has only been a member since 1994.
These things take time.
- Karma Weurtz won the 50-50 – a whopping $21.

go out to longtime member, Doug Keppler, who lost his wife, Sue, unexpectedly on May 14 due to an aneurysm. Please keep Doug and his family in your

Let’s Talk Toys!

Welcome back everyone!!
The toy I’m sharing with each of you this month was acquired
from a fellow VW toy collector in Germany, and I was very excited to purchase this item. The toy had been in the seller’s personal collection for well over 40 years and he told me he knew it
was going into a very special VW collection for another 40 years. I also purchased other VW toys from this gentleman which I hope to write about in future articles. This toy was manufactured by the Arnold GmbH & Co KG of Nürnberg, Germany in the mid-1950s. This tin
lithograph driving set is approximately 15 inches long x 4 inches wide x 3.5 inches high, and has very colorful VW lithographed graphics on all four sides. There are small plastic cars such as a Karmann Cabrio, Oval
Window VW, Karmann Ghia and a VW Bus that drives along the moving road. The set came in two versions.
Motorized (battery operated) roadway and hand crank roadway. The motorized version has a switch on the
control panel. The hand crank version had a mechanical crank lever (an “S” or “Z” shape) on the side of the VW
driving set. The crank lever was easily lost so a large key (in the photo) would work as well.
Operation: The plastic roadway moves away from the driver and has various VW models and pylons attached
to it. The control car sits halfway down the roadway headed in the opposite direction. It has a magnet in the
bottom and moves left and right with the large steering wheel on the control panel, which is attached to a small
metal plate under the roadway. The object of the game is to miss other vehicles and pylons as they come at your
control car on the moving roadway.
The toy is extremely rare, and very few examples of this driving set ever come up for sale. In my many years
of collecting, I’ve only seen a few examples for sale, and only one of them came with a box. The value of this
toy in good condition with no box is around $225 to $250, with a mint example with box coming in around
$450 - $475. It’s not uncommon though to see toys such as this driving set sell well above these figures when
collectors get into a bidding war over the item.
