The orchestra in concert in China in 2009
he Tenerife Symphony Orchestra are
celebrating their 75th anniversary this
year.
The orchestra, which continues to grow in stature
and international recognition, was founded in 1932
and on November 16th of that year, in the Teatro
Guimerá played for the first time in public. The
original orchestra was composed of professors from
the Santa Cruz music Conservatory along with wind
instrument players from the city and military bands.
Originally called the Canarian Chamber Orchestra,
they adopted their current title in 1970.
During the 2010-2011 season the orchestra will
celebrate their 75 years in existence in a number
of different musical ways, celebrating their unique
talents and also showcasing a number of Canarian
composers. There is also a commemorative
exhibition of texts and photographs of the orchestra
down through the years in the Teatro Guimerá.

International Library Day
A great read
International Library day was on October 24th, and there are already over
300,000 people registered to use the
network of 168 libraries here.
Why not join your local library – it’s free
and easy to do, and opens up doors to the
world of literature for you and your family,
and a lot more besides. Adeje library, for in-
bushes, sits a black house
with a dead lawn. Unbeknown to the neighbours,
hidden beneath this home
is a vast secret hideout.
Surrounded by a small
(West Coast)
army of minions, we discover Gru, planning the
biggest heist in the history
of the world. He is going to
steal the moon. (Yes, the
moon!) Gru delights in all
things wicked. Armed with
his arsenal of shrink rays,
freeze rays, and battle-ready
vehicles for land and air, he
vanquishes all who stand
in his way.
Until the day he encounters the immense will of
three little orphaned girls
who look at him and see
something that no-one else
has ever seen: a potential
Dad. The world’s greatest
villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little
girls named Margo, Edith
and Agnes.

The timple is usually used as
a typical rhythmic instrument by
Canarian folklore groups, but
Gomis takes the timple to new
heights and plays the instrument
like few others. He is the director
of various folk groups here in
Tenerife, and has interwoven the
dance music of the Renaissance
which was originally composed for
lute, flute or violin with Canarian
and Venezuelan folklore.
