Rhoda Habedank
There are many
things you should
know about our
school counselor.
Her name is Rhoda
Habedank. She currently works at
NCE and Waubun.
She has worked at
NCE once before,
in 2003/2004 but
her position was cut
due to lack of funding. She has since
been rehired.
She has worked
at two other
schools throughout
her career which
include an elementary school in Los
Angeles and a college in Iowa.
was inspired to become a school counselor because she
wanted to work with
kids.
Some things she
likes about NCE are
the staff and the
friendly atmosphere.
She also likes her job
because she likes to
help kids. She works

on Tuesdays and Fridays
but she comes in on Monday mornings for the staff
meetings.
One thing she thinks
the school should change
is to get more funding to
provide more class options for students.
Rhoda is married to a
farmer who lives in the
area and they have two
kids. She plans to stay
here because “you can’t
move a farm.”
Rhoda likes it when
people visit so feel free to
come in and talk.
Her Email at the

SKATEBOARDING
Now that it’s spring,
kids like to take their
skateboards out and go
skating around town or
go to bigger towns to
use their skate parks.
Skate parks are a great
place to skate and they
also provide a chance
to meet new people,
learn new tricks, and
become better. When
you beome better at
skateboarding, people
will want to skate with
you. You also have an
opportunity to get into

tournaments.
Competititve skateboarders are sponsored
by skate companies like
Element, Flip, Zero, or
Birdhouse.
Some well-known
skate shoes are Globe,
Vans, Element, DC,
Audios, and Fallen.
Name-brand Skateboards are Flip, Birdhouse, Zero, DarkStar,
Girl, Toy Machine, Enjoi,
and ZOO YORK.
The link below is a
website where you can
design your own
skaboard. You can pick
your skateboard size,
the kind of deck tape
you want and the color
of your skateboard.
There are many different skateboard
tricks. The first trick you
should learn is the
“Ollie” because it is basic and the one that
connects to the more
difficult/advanced
tricks.

NCE-UH Baseball
By: Mathew Lee
The NCE-UH
baseball team has
been joined with
Ulen-Hitterdal
since 2001. Previous
to UH, we joined
with Ada-Borup in
1995 for two years.
When we split from
AB, we were the
NCE Eagles for four
years until joining
with UH.
The baseball
team is coached by
Mr. Messick. He’s
been coaching the
team for 13 years.
In the years that
he has coached, he
has 13 wins in one
season and one subsection semi-final
appearance.
On average, a
baseball season consists of 18 to 20
games. The 2011
season started on
March 21st. The
team was supposed
to have a game on
April 7th, but the
game was postponed
and may not be rescheduled. The
game was going to
be against Lake
Park-Audubon at
home.
The Varsity
home games are
usually played in
Ulen and the Junior
High home games
are usually played in
Twin Valley.
A few reasons
NCE joined with UH
in baseball are because neither team
had enough players
and they wanted to
get more kids involved.
The name of the
NCE-UH baseball
team is the Titans.
There are 12 Varsity players and 13
playing JH.
The baseball
team would like you
to come out and
cheer them on. See
the NCE school
website for a complete schedule.

Golf News
Norman County East Golf
Norman County East
School District offers students an opportunity to play
golf. I interviewed Nick Dahl
who is on the golf team and
this is what I learned.
The coach is Ryan Liebl.
The team members are;
Nick Dahl, Michael Korsgaden, Briar Thronson, Nick
Chisolm, Addison Knutson,
Kelby Opsahl, Brock Nelson,
Gabe Hoseth and Jacob
Chisholm. The team is called
the Beavers and they practice in Fertile. The team
buys their own clubs because they are independent.

The Masters Golf
Tournament
The Masters is one of the
biggest events in the sport of
golf. The Masters was held
recently at the Augusta National Golf Club and was concluded on April 10th when
Charl Schwartzel (from South
Africa with a total of 66) won.
His prize was $1,440,000.
The golfers that tied for
second were Jason Day and
Adam Scott, both from Australia. Tiger Woods came in
tied for fourth.
The Masters began in
1934 and was played at the
Augusta National Golf Club.
The people who founded the
golf club were Bobby Jones
and Clifford Roberts.

GIRLS’ SOFTBALL
2011
BY: RANA OPSAHL
NCE-UH TITANS
The girls’ softball
season started on
March 14th, but there
was a lot of snow on
the fields so the girls
had to practice inside
for awhile.
Norman County
East is combined with
Ulen-Hitterdal for softball, so there might be
a few girls out there
that you don't know.
The girls are coached
by Steve Radneicki,
the athletic director at
NCE, whom has
coached softball for 15
years.
The team says they
like playing challenging teams like BGMR,
DGF, and Sacred
Heart.
So far the girls have
been doing very well.
On April 4th, they
played BGMR. They
were behind by 7 runs
in the 4th inning but
came back and scored
7 runs! They kept playing hard and ended up
winning the game 8-7.
They also had a close
game with East Grand
Forks, winning 6-5.
All of their other
games have been exciting to watch, too.
The Junior Varsity is
undefeated, winning
their most recent game
34-0!
The first three Junior
High games were cancelled but they started
off the season with a
good win in Glyndon (8
-7) and should have a
great season, too!
A schedule is available on the school website, so if you’re planning on going to the
games you can check
that out. We look forward to seeing you help
cheer on the NCE-UH
Titans this year!

NCE Cheerleading & Track: A Lost Cause?
By: Carrington Roy
Cheerleading
Cheerleading and track have been cut
from the athletic programs here at Norman
County East. In an interview held on April
11th with Mr. Lundin, our principal, the reasons for this were discussed.
This year many students participate in
basketball, volleyball, football, softball, and
baseball, but they aren't able to participate
in cheerleading or track because Norman
County East no longer has that option.
Many students have voiced their concerns
about this.
In the past couple of weeks the possibility of implementing cheerleading has been
discussed. It was previously cut because of
transportation issues, lack of funding, and
little interest. Some of the students here at
NCE are pushing for a cheerleading program
for 2011. In the past, some of the coaches
have been Ramona Aune, Deb Opsahl, and
Kathy Varty. Although this year, Kaylie Bekkerus is interested in coaching. Students
are anticipating the School Board’s approval. With fingers crossed, students are
hoping to get the “okay” to start.
why we no longer offer the sport. The
main reason is because there isn’t enough
students interested. Although, if enough
students show interest, it might be possible. There would have to be between 20
and 25 athletes interested to start a track
team.
You might be wondering where we
would hold track. Well, because of the
possibility of joining with Ulen-Hitterdahl
in the next few years , we would probably
have track practice there. Ulen-Hitterdahl
already has a track program set up. In the
past, Norman County East was joined with
Ada-Borup for track and one of the previous coaches was Steve Ness, the English
teacher at NCE.
If you really want a track program,
there is a good chance it is possible within
the next few years, if we do join with
Ulen-Hitterdahl for sports.

Around Twin Valley and
Gary, most people seem to
listen to Country music,
R&B/Hip-Hop, or Rock music. I’m going to tell you a
little bit about this weeks

On the top of the R&B/

has been climbing the
charts for 13 weeks now!
Chris Brown is making a
come-back and his last few
song releases have been
amazing! Coming in second
is “All of the Lights” by
Kanye West. Nicki Minaj
took up two of the top five
slots with “Did it On Em”
and “Moment of Life” featuring Drake. The last song

of Me”. The song that has
been on the charts the
longest is “There Goes My
Baby” hanging in there for

it was Zac Brown Band’s
“Colder Weather”

first. They have been on
the charts for 17 weeks
now. In second is Darius
Rucker’s single “This.”
Third—my personal favorite— “Are You Gonna Kiss
Me or Not” by Thompson
Square. They have managed
to stay on the charts for 38
weeks! Kenny Chesney
came in fourth with “Live a
Little”. Last but not least is
“Heart Like Mine” by the
one and only Miranda
Lambert. The biggest jump
for country music this week
was “Honey Bee” by Blake
Shelton.
Finally, the Rock category. The number one song
this week is “Rope” by the
Foo-Fighters.
This Weeks Biggest


Country– “I’d Love
To Be Your Last“

Book review- Child called “It”
“A Child Called It” –
written by Dave Pelzer- is
the first book in a series
about a child named David.
As David tries to overcome
the power of his abusive alcoholic mother. This is an
amazing true story about one
of the worst cases of child
abuse ever recorded in the
state of California.
The abuse for Dave Pelzer started when he was 4.
At first David’s mother
would make him sit in the
corner completely silent, but
the abuse got progressively
worse. She pulled his arm
out of the socket, burned his
arm over the stove, and
stabbed him. These were all
one time occurrences, but
she would constantly hit him
and make him swallow
things such as soap, ammonia, and Clorox. Dave was
forced to eat his own vomit
and his baby brother’s poop .
To David, all this was
very harsh, but the worst was
of it all was that his mother
took away his identity. She
no longer referred to him as
Dave, she called him “It” or
“the boy” which is how the
book got its name.
The most important thing
to Dave was to stay alive and
make sure his mother never
saw him cry because if she
did, it meant she won. He
decided not to give her the
satisfaction.
As just a young boy, Dave
became his mother’s own personal slave. For eight years
she made his life a living hell.
Every day he had to go
through the same horrible
routine. He was beaten,
starved, and had to go through
horrible “games.” His life
was like that until finally he
was rescued at the age of 12.
Although this book is extremely disturbing, I still
highly recommend it. I have
read the other books in this
series and they are all amazing books that everyone
should read.

Video Game
Call of Duty: Black Ops
“Call of Duty Black Ops” is a video game where you are in a war.
The story of this game is about a guy who is locked up in a chair and is
questioned about the past. In this game you play in Vietnam and places in Russia. When you start the campaign you go back to a guy named Alex Mason’s
memory to see his past up to when he got captured. In this game there are
many controls and different things to play. Some of the controls are R1 to
shoot and L1 to aim. L2 and R2 are used to throw different types of grenades
or you can use a tomahawk. The game modes are campaign, split screen, or
against your friends on the same T.V. You can also play against other people
online, and in many different areas. There is a mode you can play called Zombies. You can play this by yourself, split screen, or online. There is also a feature called combat training in which you can work on getting better against
computers.
The graphics of this game are okay and the sounds are very realistic.
This game is a good game for people who like war or like playing as if you
are in a war. This is an all around good game.
This game costs about $52. On average, teens play around 10 hours or
more a week.

Feathered Hair Extensions
Feathered hair extensions are the new trend. It is
very popular with teenagers
and adults. It has been popular in Fargo, North Dakota
since March, 2011. The hair
extensions are popular because it gives people style
and length for their hair.
People can get them by going to a professional stylist.
The feathered hair extensions are about 8– 16 inches
long. The feathers stay in the
hair for at least six to eight
weeks or until you take them
out. They can be reused,
shampooed, blow-dried, and

come in cream, gold, lavender, magenta, red, turquoise,
and green. They are available in most stores around
Fargo and other towns. They
aren’t messy and are easy to
get.
Feathered hair extensions are the next new trend
of the decade. They aren’t
only fashionable but don’t
damage the hair.

Source Code
“Source Code” is an
action/thriller about a soldier named Colter Stevens,
who wakes up in the body of
an unknown man and discovers he’s on a mission to find

program that can take
someone back in time for 8
minutes.
One of my favorite parts
of the movie is Captain Steven’s final wish before he
completely dies is to go back
and save everyone. Another
favorite part is in the middle
of the movie when Captain
Stevens discovers he is
dead. I also like the fact
that the movie has a happy
ending when he falls in love.
The main character of
the movie is Captain
Stevens, who is played by
Jake Gyllenghaal, he did a
great job of acting.
“Source Code” is suspenseful for most of the
movie. It’s emotional in
some parts.
Duncan Jones did a
good job directing.
I recommend it because this movie is a great
suspenseful thriller.
“Source Code” teaches
people that anything is possible. The plot for it was
good. I enjoyed every minute of it.

The Spanish Trip
By: Brock Prestegord
Mrs. Hoseth’s Spanish III class
had a fun time on their class trip
to Spain this year. The students
who went on the Spanish trip
were Halie Anderson, Matthew
Anderson, Abby Chisholm, Kara
Eken, Ali Fugleberg, Makayla
Grensteiner, Samantha Ihringer,
Paige
Johnson, Fallon Lyons,
Karenna Stene, Blaine Thronson,
Cecelia Winter, Dana Koczur, Kallie
Jensen, and Jordan
Brainard. The chaperones were
Corey Hoseth and Monica Winter.
The Spanish class visited many
historical sites, practiced interacting with native Spanish speakers,
and learned about Spanish culture. The Spanish class went to
Barcelona and Madrid, Spain for
three days. From 9:00 to 10:00
each night, they had a class meeting to learn Spanish words and go
over homework in order to prepare for the next day.
Spanish is offered at many
schools. This is important because
21 countries speak Spanish and it
also expands a person’s view of
the world. Mrs. Hoseth tries to
teach five new words each day.
There are15 students that take
Spanish III at NCE. Learning Spanish is fun and interesting. Once
you know a lot of Spanish words,
you can talk to someone else who
speaks Spanish.

Aviation Club
By: Kai Habedank
Have you ever had those
dreams where are you are
flying? Do you want to be a
pilot when you grow up? If
so, there is a club at NCE
that you may like; the Aviation Club.
The Aviation Club is a
club that uses the Microsoft Flight Simulator on the
computer to virtually fly in
the sky. There are about 12
students involved in the Aviation Club. The teacher that
started and supervises the
Club, is Mr. Anderson. While
sitting down with Mr. A, I
asked why he started the
club. He said that he
thought students would like
to learn how to fly. He said
that you don’t have to be a
certain age to be a member
of the Aviation Club, any students in 7th– 12th grade may
join. The club meets before
school in Mr. A’s room.
Mr. Anderson said that
the main goal of the
Aviation Club is, ”To have fun and not crash!” I
f you are thinking about being a pilot, or
just want to learn how to fly, go to Mr. A and
ask about joining the Aviation Club.
Horticulture
By: Kai Habedank
When you think of gardening, you may think of
your mom or dad’s garden or
a bunch of vegetables. One
way you may not think of
gardening may be as a science or an art. The term
for that is Horticulture.
Horticulture is the science
or art of cultivating fruits,
vegetables, or ornamental
plants.
Some students at NCE
may not know that we have a
Horticulture class. There
are two students in the class
and the teacher is, Ms.
Mack.
Horticulture started
when another class was cut
to half a year and we needed
another class for the remaining half. The students
learn about gardening and
landscaping.
If you are in 10th, 11th,
or 12th grade and you are
looking to learn something
new, think about taking this
class.

Building Trades
By: Jordan Halvorson
The building
trades class is
taught by Miss
Mack, along with
Mike Bueng, a local
contractor, who
helps out a lot.
A total of 11
students from both
NCE and AdaBorup schools take
the class.
In the building
trades class, the
students build a
house from the
floor up. The class
is held during the
first two periods
throughout the
course of the year.
The students build
everything except
the rafters and the
floor trusts, which
come pre-made. All
the other building
materials come from
the UBC in Ada. UBC
had the lowest bid.
There are certain
things the students
aren't allowed to
complete, so the
electricity, plumbing,
mudding, and the
taping are all hired
out to local contractors.
When the stu-
dents finish the
house it is sold to
the highest bidder.
They are responsible for getting the
