The AER is responsible for the safe, efficient, orderly, and
environmentally responsible development of hydrocarbon resources
over their entire life cycle.

Field Operations Branch
In 2012 the Field Operations Branch (FOB) conducted
approximately 12,482 audits and inspections, and responded to
over 754 complaints related to oil and gas activities.

Stick Diagram
A “STICK” diagram is a well data information sheet specific to the
drilling operation of a well (obtained from researching offset well
records). It must provide the appropriate onsite personnel (e.g., licensee,
rig manager, driller) with sufficient well control information to drill the well
and must be posted in the doghouse.
On-site personnel must review and understand the information provided
in the STICK diagram prior to drilling out the surface casing shoe or prior
to the commencement of drilling operations with a diverter system.

The STICK diagram must include, as a minimum, the following
information:
geological tops,
anticipated formation pressures and mud weights required to
control them,
potential problem zones (e.g., lost circulation, water flows, gas
flows),
abnormal pressured zones (e.g., reservoir pressure
maintenance),
potential H2S zones, and
other well occurrence information

Noise Complaints
Complaints in general are a priority with the AER
Common complaints include; noise, odours, no notification,
traffic, dust, flaring, spills, environmental concerns, etc..
The majority of complaints received each year are
related to noise issues.

Noise Complaints continued
Some things that can be done to minimize the impacts of
complaints are:
Use engine exhaust silencers
Use ventilation silencers on enclosure openings with pumps and engines
Minimize the number of gensets operating during the night
Keep doors closed to genset enclosures
Position gensets as far away from residence as practical
Be mindful of noise generated from horns and back-up beepers
Place tanks and berms between residence and drilling rig

Flow Checks & What’s Required
Horizontal Section
The drilling rig will be equipped with an automated PVT system. When tripping from the open‐hole section, the hole fill pump will run continuously. The volume of fluid that the hole takes while tripping will be monitored. When the drill string has been pulled to the intermediate casing shoe, a flow check will be conducted and recorded. All required flow checks for the remainder of the trip will be conducted and recorded. A copy of this email will be posted with the well license during the drilling of this well.
