Weekend Operations Team
The list of those serving on our Weekend Operations Teams is too large for this Annual Report,
but you know who you are! Servants on the teams
listed below make it possible for our worship
services to run smoothly for the 1,100+ individuals
who attend Spring Hills each and every weekend.
Thank you!

Book Ministry
We have 7 Host Teams, with more than 50 people
participating. The teams meet half an hour before
service to have a time of prayer with Pastor Tom
and then receive special instructions before they
go to their respective positions. Team members
have received training to help them be the best first
point of contact when people enter the church.

about spring hills
Senior Pastor Tom Pound
and his wife Tracy
Greetings to all!
It gives me great joy to look back on this year and to
see how God has moved in amazing ways through the
ministries of Spring Hills. As we focus on “Building
Generations for Jesus Christ” and strive to Love, Live
and Lead like Jesus, our church family has responded
with great enthusiasm, dedication and devotion to
our gracious God. Our worship services continue to
grow and I pray our worship experience is helping
you grow to maturity in your faith. God has truly
blessed this church with talented musicians. Many
in our congregation continue to grow through
study of God’s word with a strong Women’s Bible
Study program, our new Men’s 8 Transformational
Truths and through Spring Hills University. Our
children’s and youth ministries continue to be fun
and provide exciting opportunities for our kids to
connect with God and with one another. Granville
Christian Academy and Sonshine Preschool continue
to be great environments for children to experience
Christian education. Our Home School ministry is
thriving.
Spring Hills Baptist Church
We also desire to passionately reach out to our
community with life-changing ministries. Our
AWANA, VBS, His Hope and Celebrate Recovery
Ministries are carried out with excellence, blessed by
pastoral leadership and exceptional volunteers. We
continue our partnership with Look-Up Center as
well with volunteers assisting in the Blast Club, Dental
Ministry and feeding the hungry. We are touching lives
around the world, having sent our largest team ever to
the Philippines. Additionally, we are partnering with
others to help bring fresh water to those in need in
Africa and have begun developing relationships with
orphanages there. We hosted our first Orphan Summit
to raise awareness and provide opportunities for those
who are called to make a difference in the lives of
orphans and local children in need of foster care.
As I look back on this year, I am overwhelmed by
how God is moving in our midst. I am privileged
and grateful to be your pastor and to serve alongside
such an amazingly talented and devoted staff. The
volunteerism in this church family is beyond amazing
and we are so thankful for each and every act of
service. We are looking forward to a great summer
with a ministry soon to be unveiled called “Operation
Love Invasion”. It is my hope that the love of Jesus
has invaded your heart and is prompting you to share
it with those around you. Together, we can make a
difference in the world and “Build Generations for Jesus
Christ.”
In Christ,
Pastor Tom
Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we
may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy

Senior Pastor Tom Pound
If you forget everything else about Spring Hills, remember that Jesus motivates, influences, and deserves the glory for our past and our future. “In Him all
things hold together.” (Col. 1:17)
As you look through this year’s Annual Report, we
hope you enjoy reading about the grace of our
Lord and the amazing work in which we ALL get to
participate.
The following pages describe an overview - all highlights from the 2014-2015 fiscal year of how our ministries have been touched by the people and gifts of SHBC. This Annual
Report has been compiled by our staff and ministry leaders.

Pastor Mark Elliott & his wife Kristin
This year our Student Ministry has been about Spiritual growth! Even
though we have seen our middle school group nearly double in size to over
40 we have continued to share messages that challenge students to grow.
It is our desire to help them lay a firm foundation through high school so
that as they go into college they are prepared for the challenges that will
come as other worldviews collide with their own. We want students to
stay engaged so that they can get the best preparation they can as each year
gets more and more challenging than the last!
Worshiping Together
Our youth group is in a new era of relational
ministry that is open and welcoming no matter
what school, family, or background you have. We
have students from many different schools who
all come for the purpose of hearing the Word and
worshiping together every Wednesday night for
High School at 6:30 and Middle School on Sunday
nights at 6pm.
12 - Annual Report 2014-15
Fun!
In addition to the life-changing retreats and events,
we also like having fun! Some of those events have
been the 100ft water-slide, Middle School Food
Fight, Parent vs. Student paintball, Boys vs. Girls
Nerfwar, and many more activities.
ministry updates
God-honoring Dance & Social
Time
One of the vital ministries we have added has been
giving students an alternative to the dances at the
local schools. We offer a God-honoring environment to dance, socialize, and connect with students
from other youth groups and schools. This year we
had students from GCA, Granville High School,
Sheridan High School, Heath, Licking Valley, Watkins, Newark, and a few others totaling 80+ students and chaperones! We learned to swing dance,
line dance, and even chicken dance. Most of all,
there is no pressure for inappropriate dancing and
behavior.
Spring Hills Baptist Church
Monday Night Bible Studies
Weekly Bible studies are an important part of our
youth ministry that we offer for our Middle School
ladies as well as high school guys and gals. Kristin
Elliott teaches our Middle School Girls about topical issues relating to the Christian life. The high
school ladies are taught through a mix of lecture
and discussion on deeper issues of faith and apologetics. John Paul Kemmenoe leads our gentlemen
on a journey of growing deeper in Christ through
discussion-based teaching that centers on being
a godly man in every area of our lives. This year
they ended their time with a banquet honoring the
ladies of the group with a special dinner.
Spring Break in the Smokies
This year marks our first Spring Break Trip to the
Great Smokey Mountains! We had a wonderful
time making new and meaningful connections and
growing deeper in our faith through student led
worship! A time of teaching and discussion was led
by Pastor Mark Elliott in the morning, followed by
small groups. Shane Huey, Youth Pastor of Veritas
Church in Columbus, OH brought relevant and
passionate teaching in the evenings. We enjoyed
the amazing views and delicious home-cooked
meals as well as some memorable hikes through the
Great Smokies! Our cabin was 4 stories high and
featured its own movie theater, game room, indoor
pool, and hot tubs. Luckily, it was large enough to
accommodate the nearly 50 people who joined us
on this trip.

Care and support ministry continues to touch the lives of hundreds of people
through the various ministries of CareNet. CareNet consists of 5 separate
ministries (Celebrate Recovery, Celebrate Recovery Youth, Pastoral Care,
GriefShare and Family Matters) that all seek to bring biblical guidance and
encouragement to individuals, couples and entire families.
Pastor Jeff Houghton coordinates the various ministries of CareNet and is assisted by at least 32 adult volunteers who have found a meaningful avenue of
service in ministries that God uses to change lives.
Men’s Ministry
“8” has continued to be an effective means of discipleship for men at Spring Hills. Over 60 men have gathered on
Saturday mornings for Bible study, fellowship and prayer as they study transforming truths taught by Jesus. The
focus of the study is the Sermon on the Mount. Men study through this in consecutive 8 week segments (thus the
term “8”). The men also enjoy 3 breakfasts throughout the course of each 8 week study.
Men’s Tuesday Morning
Bible Study
The early bird gets the worm and the men that
gather on Tuesday mornings at 6 AM in the
Fireside Room find encouragement and fellowship
as they gather weekly to study God’s Word.

ministry updates
Celebrate Recovery
Celebrate Recovery was started over 20 years ago by
John Baker who had a dream of creating a ministry
for Christians to experience the freeing power of
Jesus Christ for life’s hurts, habits and hang-ups.
We have been blessed to see Celebrate Recovery
become such a vital part of the ministry of Spring
Hills over the past 10 years.
The mission of Celebrate Recovery is to fellowship
and celebrate God’s healing power through a Christ
centered biblically based 12 step approach to
overcoming life’s hurts, habits and hang-ups. Our
motto is “Changed Lives”. To that end Celebrate
Recovery provided instruction and support to an
average weekly attendance of over 30 adults and
over 40 children and teens throughout this fiscal
year.
Spring Hills Baptist Church
Celebrate Recovery Youth
The same life changing principles that are at work
in Celebrate Recovery are also at work in the lives
of children and teens through Celebrate Recovery
Youth! To date this fiscal year the volunteers at CRY
have ministered to an average of 40 children and
teens on a weekly basis. These students are learning
that God loves them and is there for them. They
are learning to turn to God, to pray and avoid the
myriad avenues of temptation that come to them
in today’s world. Celebrate Recovery Youth is a real
ministry to help real students deal with the real
world!
We have been privileged to witness God’s healing
and freedom come to men and women who have
found freedom through Jesus Christ.
GriefShare
In January of 2015 GriefShare was re-introduced
at Spring Hills and was met with immediate favor.
8-10 individuals who have experienced the loss
of a loved one met together on Monday nights to
learn, comfort one another and be comforted in
their grieving process. Dixie Merrill and Pastor Jeff
co-facilitate this grief recovery experience and each
add their expertise to the overall process.
Celebrate Recovery Youth has two age groupings.
Celebration Station is for children in first through
fifth grade and The Landing is for students in
grades 6-12. CRY is truly a ministry that is in the
trenches of where so many of today’s young people
live. We are fortunate to have a volunteer staff who
serve in these trenches and are making a significant
difference in the lives of children and teens!

Family Matters
God’s Not Dead
On Friday, January 16 the Family Ministry department of Spring Hills along with the Youth Ministry
department co-sponsored the movie event “God’s
Not Dead”. Over 100 people came out on a cold Friday night to enjoy popcorn and refreshments as they
watched a Christian themed movie addressing a key
issue for believers in today’s world.
Heart2Heart Marriage Retreat
Communication: Overcoming Barriers, Building
Bridges was the theme of this years’ marriage retreat
which was once again held in the beautiful Smokey
Mountains. 14 couples from Spring Hills made the
trek to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee to learn, have fun
and make some new friends on what is a highly
popular retreat experience.
Each year couples from Spring Hills get away for a
fun and relaxing weekend while focusing on how
to take their relationship to the next level. Pastor
Jeff Houghton and his wife, Teri, have been leading
retreats for 16 years and provide opportunities
for fun and fellowship while providing practical
teaching designed to strengthen marriages. For the
past two years the destination for the retreat has
been the beautiful Smokey Mountains. This has
been a popular destination and just might be the
scene for next year’s retreat as well!
Spring Hills Riders
2014 was the third season for
Spring Hills Riders. Several new
individuals saddled up their bikes
and joined in for fun, faith and
fellowship.
Spring Hills Riders has both men and women who
participate. Some of the women ride with their spouse
and some have their own bikes. All men and women
who have a love for riding motorcycles are welcome to
join in the fun.

Pastor Jeff Smith & his wife Nancy
2014 was a busy and fruitful year for the Congregational Care Ministry.
This ministry includes visits to those within our fellowship who are in
Nursing Homes, in the Hospital, or are Homebound. Last year our Congregational Care Ministers met with 21 members on a regular basis. We also
visited those within our fellowship who were in the hospital. Our Congregational Care Ministers made up of 9 caregivers made 132 visits in 2015.
These visits augment those visits made by our Pastoral Staff. We also have
a team of people who plan, arrange, and provide meals for funerals and
other crisis situations.
Spring Hills
University Course:
“How to Minister to Others”
We are planning to present a
class entitled: “How to
Minister to Others”in
the Fall of 2015. This
class includes training
on Visitation, Emergency/Crisis, Death
and Dying, and Grief.
Our Ministry Team was
able to use their training to
better minister to others. We look forward to anyone interested in the Congregational Care Ministry
to join us this fall.
Pastoral Care
Our congregation is blessed to have godly
pastors who are eager to serve our congregation
and community. Each of these men are eager
to meet and pray with anyone who calls on
them. Our pastors also offer biblical guidance
and encouragement to the members of our
congregation and community. Two of our
pastors hold Masters degrees in Pastoral Care
and Counseling (Senior Pastor Tom Pound and
Associate Pastor Jeff Houghton) enabling them
to serve the needs of our congregation in specific
ways.
Care Notes
Ministry
Our Care Notes Ministry,
another dimension of the
Congregational Care Ministry,
gives those within our church
family the opportunity to
shower our members who
have experienced illness,
discouragement, or the death of a loved one with
cards and letters of encouragement.
Many positive comments have come from the
recipients of our Care Notes Ministry.
One comment was from a family who wrote:
To Pastor Jeff Smith:
“I was going through such a rough time
in my life. I have never been through
anything like this. I was wondering what
was going to happen to me as I faced my
new diagnosis of cancer. Within a couple
of hours of my call two ladies from Spring
Hills just showed up and ministered to
me. I don’t know what I would have done
without them. Thank you for knowing
what I needed.”

Pastor Coley Mull & his wife Tonya
In August 2014 our small group ministry was refocused and “rebranded”
under the direction of Pastor Coley Mull. It is our goal to develop a more
connected church body through coed small groups, men’s small groups,
and women’s small groups. These Connection Groups are helping us build
generations for Christ by getting more people involved in Bible study each
week, and by maintaining strong relationships with others in the church.
2014 was a year where we saw a record number of first time visitors to our
church. Whether through the Eternity Drama or the First Time Visitor
gift bags, we are seeing God draw people to our church each week. A main
focus of the Assimilation ministry is to follow up with everyone who visits
Spring Hills and to help them find opportunities to be connected here.
It was another great year for Spring Hills University classes. SHU is an exciting way to connect to God’s Word with
God’s people. Participants learned more about God’s will in many relevant areas of life. Some of the classes offered
discussed relationship boundaries, prophecy, biblical leadership, financial stewardship, prayer and world religions. Stay
tuned for more to come from the Discipleship ministry in 2015!
Spring Hills University
Spring Hills University is our discipleship program
for high school through adult ages. We offer a wide
variety of classes that will assist you in learning
more about God’s Word in a classroom context with
others who are also interested in learning. SHU is a
great way to meet people and grow in your faith. If
you have interest in taking a class, teaching a class,
or have ideas for future classes, please contact Pastor
Coley.
The Fall session of SHU will be September 27 –
November 22. Look for exciting course options in
one of our three tracks; Love, Live, and Lead. This
will be an exciting part of your journey to become
more Like Jesus.

Host Teams
Connection Groups
Connection Groups at Spring Hills Baptist
Church are vital to the overall vision of “Building
Generations for Jesus Christ.” We live in a
connected world: smartphones, tablets, social
media, the cloud, wifi, the list gould go on.
However, it is clear that intentional connections
with friends, neighbors, and families are not
happening. The goal of each Connection Group is
to give people scheduled opportunities to connect
with followers of Jesus and the Bible. You were
indeed made to connect! Prayerfully consider
joining a Connection Group today.
Welcoming
new members
and guests into
our church is
a top priority
at Spring Hills.
We have seven
host teams with
responsibility to
meet and greet
each and every
person coming
to worship. Host team members are out “first
impression” of our “first reflection” of the light of
Christ. If you would be interested in serving at two
services per month, please contact Coley Mull.

Pastor Gary Kirkpatrick
& his wife Melodee
Our Mission & Children’s Ministries exist to advance the Gospel of Jesus
Christ and His Kingdom into the nations through spiritual generations of
laborers praying, living and discipling among the lost. This premise is built
upon one over-arching truth: the remarkable love our creator God has for
His people and the call placed within us to know Him through a personal
relationship with His Son Jesus Christ! Time and time again we see firsthand “God delighting in our conformity amidst our diversity”. Conformity
to His ways as revealed in the Bible; and diversity in the portrayal of this
allegiance through all ages, families and relationships! Thus, it remains our
goal to create an atmosphere where each believer can see his or her part in
reaching this objective.
Preschool
Under the guidance of both our
Preschool Ministry Directors,
Dan and Brittany Pound,
it has been a tremendously
BLESSED year! We have
witnessed first-hand a season of
spiritual hunger, called and qualified adult leaders
and great strides of obedience as God’s Truth has
gone forth! Weekend services continue to utilize
an age-appropriate teaching curriculum entitled –
“KID MO”. Students and families alike have fallen
deeper in love with God’s Word, His call to hear
and respond to His voice, worship Him, and make
Him the focus of their lives!! Likewise this increased
enthusiasm has been tied to increased attendance:
Saturday night and Sunday 11 am morning services
both range from 45-50 children; and Sunday 9
am is around 25. Volunteer Leaders serving in
the Department now exceed over 35 on any given
weekend!! - Dan & Brittany Pound,

Journeyland
Our School-Age Children’s
Journeyland Program has
now moved into its seventh
year!! Through the dedicated
leadership of 35 adult and
junior staff volunteers on a weekly basis, six rotating
thematic “teaching stations” were utilized. Both
Old & New Testament Biblical Characters, basic
Christian Doctrine, Global Outreach, the Plan of
Salvation, Mission Partners and outside speakers
were represented during the course of the year as
God spoke to His “Beloved Children” – drawing
them deeper in love with Him!!

Easter Celebration
Kids Kamp
The Annual Easter Children’s Celebration was a
delightful success, gathering over 550 folks for
the traditional Egg Hunt, games, face painting, a
petting zoo, lunch, and telling of the Easter
Gospel account!
This five-day, annual
summer Statewide Baptist
resident camp is for children
going into grades 4-7. It is
described as “…The Greatest
Mission Education and Bible Study Camp
experience for Children in Ohio”. Each year
hundreds and hundreds of children from
all corners of Ohio, walks of life and family
backgrounds make the discovery that:
- God Loves them,
- Jesus died and rose for them and …
- ultimately calls them to profess a personal
relationship with Him!
Games, crafts, campfires and dipping in the ole’
swimmin’ hole round out the week with both
challenge and memories. All-in-all, this camp
has been a long -standing fixture in our children’s
ministry as it grows, shapes and molds each
participant into more of Jesus’ likeness – for more
of His Glory!

AWANA – an acronym intending to remind us that:
“Approved Workman Are Not Ashamed”, has been
bringing the Truth of God’s Word to thousands and
thousands of children, ages 3-12, at Spring Hills
Baptist for 20 + years! This International Children’s
Outreach & Discipleship Program is offered here
each Wednesday of the school year, from 6 – 8
pm. This year alone we saw children receive Christ
as personal Savior, grow in love with Him and
His Word, share their budding faith and “hide”
hundreds upon hundreds of Bible verses in their
hearts that they “may not sin against Him!!” Each
week, between 130-150 students and leaders, gather
corporately for prayer, verse recitation, games and
crafts. Highlights of the year also included our
LOCAL MISSION OUTREACH (that collected
over $700 for missions), the Grand Prix Car Kit
Race and visits from Missionaries, Pastors and
Special Guests!

Pastor Brad Pilkington & his wife Paula
The Spring Hills Worship Ministry seeks to encourage followers of
Christ to become life-long worshipers of God, going deeper and growing
richer in the worship of Jesus Christ, and inviting others to come along!
The most significant part of Worship Ministry occurs every weekend at
Spring Hills: our Saturday and Sunday weekend worship services. How
blessed we are to have such a servant-hearted and talented worship team!
They invite us into the presence of the Lord through praise each and
every weekend of the year.
Weekend Worship Team
Weekend Worship Team members include the
preacher, vocalists and instrumentalists, audio and
media technicians, HisHands sign language interpreters, and in a coordinated effort, the Admin
Team, the Host Team, Security Team, Facility Team,
Journeyland Leadership Team, Nursery/Preschool
Care Team, and the Offering Counting Team.
Saturday, 6:00 p.m. - Ultra Contemporary
Led primarily by Pastor Tom Pound and Bobby
Tucker, SHBC Worship Leader. Marked by rockin’
electric guitars and cutting edge music, you’ll hear
songs from Hillsong United, Jesus Culture, and
others similar in style.
Sunday, 9:00 a.m. - Acoustic
Led primarily by Pastor Tom Pound and Brad
Pilkington, SHBC Worship Pastor. This service
drops the electric guitars and drums, and allows for
a more “acoustic” feel and sound. You’ll typically
enjoy a hymn or two in this service, either the way
you remember them, or possibly presented in a
fresh arrangement.
Sunday, 11:00 a.m. - Contemporary
Also led primarily by Pastor Tom and Pastor Brad.
Here you have a style that is somewhere between
Saturday night and the Sunday 9:00 service. We
bring the drums and at least one electric guitar back
and sing songs from Hillsong Live, Paul Baloche,
Chris Tomlin, Don Moen, and other similar
worship leaders and song writers.

Granville Christian Academy
This year has been an exciting year of planning for Granville Christian
Academy. The GCA Board spent many hours implementing a strategic
plan for the future growth and expansion of the school. After setting
specific priorities for GCA, the Board has continued to pursue three
specific areas for strategic planning: facilities, salaries and development.
We have accomplished the following goals:
1.Facilities-Purchase and renovate the Fifth Street Gym and explore
other ways to expand our current facility.
2. Salaries-Improve the teacher salary schedule.
3.Development-Identify and pursue potential donors, including grants;
train student ambassadors.
Our preliminary objectives are being accomplished, allowing much
excitement to build for the future of GCA.

for Jesus Christ, learning along the way to love, live, and lead like Jesus.
Our Key Verses
We empower home
schooling families by
helping them connect with
Jesus Christ, resources,
and each other.
“My goal is that they will be encouraged and knit together by strong ties
of love. I want them to have full confidence because they have complete
understanding of God’s secret plan, which is Christ himself. In Him, lie
hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:2-3
(NLT)
“He (the LORD) will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store
of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key
to this treasure.” Isaiah 33:6 (NIV)

The women of Spring Hills continue a journey to seek the Lord, rejoice in
worship and faithfully serve His people. They are passionate about study of
the Word and faithful to serve when called. The women’s Bible study groups
continue to thrive and many more women were enrolled in Spring Hills
University as well. Women are serving on many of our leadership teams, and
participating as host team members, offering counters, preschool ministry
volunteers, congregational caregivers, café workers, book ministry, office

Women’s Bible Study
What a great year of studying God’s Word!
Pauline Strauss, Paula Pilkington and I, Ginnie Berry meet every Summer and plan the next four
studies that we will be doing. Much prayer and thought goes into the selections. We try to borrow
as many leader kits as possible to save money though we did purchase our Spring study leader kit.
Thanks to Women’s Council for approving that! We also look at what our church is currently going
through in this season of growth. This is all very exciting when planning with God by our side!
In the Fall we did
“Children of the Day” by
Beth Moore. We had over
100 ladies with the Tuesday
(Average attendance for
and Thursday classes! It
was a wonderful study.
Women’s Bible Studies)
Winter was “Authentic”
by James MacDonald
which was another very
challenging and wonderful
study. Our numbers were down a bit with a total of
approx. 80 ladies.

Our upcoming Summer
study will be “Wonderstruck:
Awakening to the Nearness of
God” by Margaret Feinberg.
It is a 7 week study. Paula
Pilkington which will lead.
I will still help her, however.
Childcare is available upon
request.
Though we do allow for a few scholarships for books, at
times we also help each other. Sometimes ladies will step
up and buy a Bible Study book for someone who can’t
afford the book at that time! We don’t want anyone left out

study. Some of these include: Writing letters for His Hope
ministry bags, donations to His Hope, donations to Sarah
Foltz for her Africa mission trip, and A21 campaign to
help stop Sex Trafficking! We collected “Cents Against
Slavery” and sent it to them. We also support the Look Up
Center when needed.
We learn to study the Word, to fellowship with other
believers, give of our resources, and love God with all our
heart, soul, mind and strength!

WAG - Women’s Adventure Group
The WAG ministry has provided several
opportunities this past fiscal year for
women to engage in meaningful
relationships with other women
that challenged and enriched their
walk and faith in God, exposed
weaknesses and strengths, and
allowed them to experience God’s created order
up close and personal.
WAG members participate in retreats
and other activities such as hiking,
camping, biking, horseback riding,
rappelling, and white water rafting.
Mom2Mom
Mom 2 Mom had a great year
with new focus -- Moms on a
mission to better themselves,
their families, and their
world! We had speakers
and topics which included:
organization, a Mentor
Mom panel, gratitude,
marriage enrichment,
spiritual growth in our
children, women’s health, &
safety preparedness for our
children.
Each month we highlighted
a charity and took donations
from the membership. We raised
about $75 for each charity. We also
had fieldtrips for Moms and
their children from the
Apple Orchard to Hope
Farms and also a family
bowling outing, bimonthly Mom’s Night
Out, and monthly Craft
Club which allowed us
to socialize and grow
deeper relationships.
We are proud of our
message and continue to
be a community of Moms
encouraging one another
on our journeys through
Motherhood.

His Hope Ministry
Spring Hills Baptist Church, through the generous contributions of our
members and attenders, has been able to provide assistance to 100’s of
people through the His Hope Ministry. This ministry of prayer and
helps began in October of 2008 and has since expanded to include
establishing a food pantry. Generally, those who call or stop by for
assistance are prayed over and interviewed to determine how we can
best come alongside them. At times we assist by providing guidance to
other community resources. Typically, we are able to provide assistance
with food, clothing, utilities and medical expenses, but also help with
emergency shelter and transportation needs. Our food pantry has
proven to be a vital part of the His Hope Ministry and we are able to
distribute on average 5-8 bags of food and toiletries per week. Our first priority is to help those from within our
congregation. We do, however, provide assistance to those who are not a part of our congregation and often partner
with other local churches and agencies such as the Licking County Coalition of Care, Salvation Army and the St.
Vincent DePaul Relief Team in order to meet those needs.
We have added a “Heartbeats” focus which enables members of our congregation to make donations of baby items
for that ministry which will impact the lives of children. Heartbeats giving bags have been added to our display to
facilitate this giving.

Spring Hills Baptist Church
SHBC Stewardship Philosophy
January 2013
Spring Hills Baptist Church believes in Scripture
and adheres to the verses and Biblical principles of
stewardship. This document expresses the philosophy
of the SHBC Elders related to tithes & offerings,
operations, debt, repayment of debt and stewardship
of our buildings, grounds, and assets.
The Elders, as outlined in the SHBC By-Laws, are
the guardians of the organization’s mission and
vision. The Elders have final discretion to prayerfully
determine how best to use the church’s resources,
facilities and property. This will be in consultation
with church pastors, staff and our Stewardship
& Personnel (S&P) Team. The Elders have final
authority and responsibility in all financial matters,
and have wide latitude to direct the financial priorities
of the church.
1) We believe God’s Word provides both specific and
implied direction for born-again believers and
local churches as it relates to money, possessions,
and finances:
a) God is the Creator of all, and we are stewards.
We do not “own” anything; everything
(property, finances, assets, etc.) we have is
because God allows us to be responsible for it
for a season. All born-again believers need to
live as visitors here, and view our belongings
in the same manner. (I Peter 1:17, Hebrews
11:13)
b) Scripture is clear regarding the responsibly
and privilege of giving “first fruits” back
to God in recognition of His role as our
provision and provider. SHBC believes that
the Biblical standard for first fruits tithing
is 10% of all income and belongings. We
heartily encourage all believers to diligently
strive to demonstrate obedience to God by
offering a percentage tithe. (Genesis 28:2022, Leviticus 27:30-32 Deuteronomy 26:1215, Malachi 3:10, 2 Corinthians 8:11-12, 2
Corinthians 9:7)
c) According to Scripture, individual or
corporate debt is not sinful. Debt, in and
48 - Annual Report 2014-15
of itself, is not good or evil. However,
God’s Word does caution against debt and
gives examples of the consequences of
indebtedness. (Deuteronomy 28:15-48, Psalm
37:21, Proverbs 6:1-5, Proverbs 22:7)
d) There are no examples in Scripture of debt
or indebtedness being used to glorify God or
expand His Kingdom.
e) God’s Word gives many examples of how God
used his people to fund ministry, care for the
needy & expand His Kingdom:
Building the Tabernacle (Exodus 25: 1-9,
Exodus 35: 20-29, Exodus 36: 4-7)
Building the Temple (I Chronicles 29: 1-20)
Restoring the Temple (II Kings 12: 1-12, II
Chronicles 24: 8-14)
Caring for those displaced at Pentecost (Acts
2: 44, 45, Acts 4: 32-35)
Famine Relief in Jerusalem (I Corinthians 16:
1-3, II Corinthians 8: 1-15)
Church at Philippi’s Support of Paul’s
Ministry (Philippians 4: 10-20)
2) Spring Hills Baptist Church may use a variety of
ways to help fund and provide for local, regional
& international ministries. This will include:
weekly offerings during worship services; special
offerings; fundraising events & dinners; capital
campaigns and/or other strategies as appropriate.
We will not use lotteries, raffles or other chance or
gambling-type methods to raise funds for church
operations or ministry support.
3) Any and all expenditures, annual or nonbudgeted, will be evaluated on the basis of their
alignment with SHBC’s values, ministry priorities,
enhancement to church property and financial
position.
4) Additions to facility or property, or obtaining
additional property, will not occur without the
full presentation of a business plan (typical
of what is expected by investors or a lending

institution) to the appropriate SHBC leadership.
Any conversations regarding significant facility
expansion, property acquisition, encumbering the
church with debt, or other major decisions need
to be discussed collaboratively with the Elders,
S&P Team, SHBC pastors, SHBC staff, and the
ministry/ministries interested in expansion.
5) This business plan may include, but not be limited
to:
- Executive summary of project or ministry;
- Description of entity or ministry;
- Needs analysis for ministry or project;
- Strategy & implementation, including: oversight
& management; expected personnel & volunteer
needs, outcomes & results, project timelines, budget
and expected timelines for construction and
payment of any incurred debt;
- Facility & equipment needs;
- Communication plan, including: primary &
secondary audiences, detailed methods (i.e.,
web, social networking, events, etc.);
- Financial analysis, including: detailed cash
flow projections, anticipated revenue sources,
demonstration of long-term financial
sustainability for project or ministry.
6) Additional debt for additions to the property
would not be considered by SHBC leadership
until the current mortgage is paid off unless a
reasonable percentage of funds of the proposed
project have been raised in advance. The
SHBC Elders will determine a percentage after
consulting with other SHBC leadership and
ministries.
additional fundraising strategies or projects may
be implemented to accelerate debt retirement.
9) Fundraisers/debt-reduction campaigns for SHBC
or associated ministries will be structured and
timed in such a way that giving to SHBC budget
would not be affected. It will be stressed that
giving to these efforts is over and above the
regular giving of tithes and offerings,
This organizational philosophy of stewardship is
adopted unanimously by the Elders of Spring Hills
Baptist Church and is subject to review and revision at
the prayerful discretion of the Elder body. This policy
is effective January 14, 2013.

7) There will be an annual review of debt by S&P
with a report to Elders. The purpose is to discern
if: 1) the repayment of any debt is on schedule; 2)
the debt to income ratio is still within acceptable
levels; 3) there is reason to be more aggressive in
our debt reduction.
8) The intent of the Elders is to diligently work
toward retiring any debt as soon as possible.
An annual debt review will assist in discerning if
