She extends full management of hotel room bookings as well as rental of event space. Additionally, Jennifer has also led the charge to establish a new restaurant concept in York County dubbed, The Garlic Poet. Beginning JDK solely as a catering company over twenty-seven years ago, Jennifer has strategically expanded her business into a hospitality empire. Jennifer has been featured as one of Pennsylvania’s, “50 Best Women in Business” and has gained international accreditation by accepting the Special Events Magazine Gala Award. Harrisburg Magazine has recognized Jennifer and JDK as the region’s best caterer for over a decade; the Harrisburg Regional Chamber and Central Penn Business Journal recognized the company as Small Business of the Year in 2005; and, JDK received the Inc. 5000 Award as one of the fastest growing companies in the Eating Places Industry. While a devoted mother of four and highly integrated CEO of two hospitality operations, Jennifer still finds time to give back to her community. She recently served as president of the International Caterers Association, serves on the Junior Achievement Regional Council and is a board member on the Central Penn College Board of Trustees. Jennifer sat on the Board of Directors for numerous non-profit organizations some of which include: Contact Helpline, Harrisburg Regional Chamber and United Way of the Capital Region. Hemmer is the vice president for Waste Management overseeing their businesses in Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York City and Delaware. She is responsible for the executive management of Waste Management’s network of operations including waste and recycling collection companies, transfer stations, landfills, recycling operations, and organics management facilities. In 1994, Tara graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering. She joined Waste Management in 1999 after four years with two separate consulting engineering firms (ABB Environmental and TAMS Consultants). Spending time in consulting prepared her for the unique challenges of working on the “owner” side where Tara was responsible for project development, specifically the design, engineering, and construction of several large waste transfer facilities that are now the cornerstone of Waste Management’s waste by rail infrastructure in their East Coast network. In 2006, Tara made the transition to the operations side of the company, directing Waste Management’s recycling operations throughout Pennsylvania. Continuing to find ways to profitably extract value from the materials Waste Management collects became a passion of Tara’s and spurred her to find ways to expand the portfolio of services Waste Management offers their customers. This included broader expansion of single-stream programs, development of food waste processing facilities, and expansion of key disposal assets to meet customer needs. Tara believes truly listening to Waste Management’s customer base drives shared value for all. Tara rose to her current role in 2012 and strongly believes Waste Management’s greatest asset is its people. She has worked to create leadership development programs for employees in an effort to put Waste Management’s valuable team members in a position to drive long-term growth and at the same time meet their own personal development objectives. She also supports the Waste Management Women’s Professional Network to promote and advance women leaders within the company. Tara continues her leadership outside Waste Management through board work with the Economy League, Third Century Initiative (Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce), and with the Maternity Care Coalition. She lives in Bucks County with her husband Joe and her two children. In her free time, she enjoys biking, swimming and visiting the beach. Week IV August 2 – August 8, 2015 Christine Toretti is the former chairman and CEOof the S. W. Jack Drilling Co., the largest privately-held land-based drilling company in the United States. She serves as vice chairman of S&T Bancorp and is a former director of the Pittsburgh Federal Reserve Bank. Her proven business acumen, and reputation as a business turn-around expert, make her a much sought-after advisor. A force within her industry, the Bush administration sought Christine’s input by placing her on the National Petroleum Council and the U.S. Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board. Christine serves on many non-profit boards including the International Medical Corps, an NGO that has been lauded as the most fiscally efficient in the world while serving those distressed with distinction. She chaired The Andy Warhol Museum, was founding director of the Gettysburg Foundation and served numerous higher education institutions and systems. Christine founded and chairs the Anne B. Anstine Excellence in Public Service Series in Pennsylvania and the Dodie Londen Excellence in Public Service Series in Arizona. Governor Tom Ridge appointed Christine to Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education and adopted a plan she crafted to fund investments in higher education in new and innovative ways. Governor Mark Schweiker later appointed her to the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission. President George W. Bush also appointed her to the Rural Telephone Bank where she served as vice chair. In 2007, she was elected chair of the Committee of 200, an organization of the most influential female CEOs in the world. Recently, she was elected to the Board of Directors of CEO. If you ask Christine about her life’s priorities, she says they are two-fold. First, her commitment to her three sons is paramount and compels her to political activism because of her concern for their future. Second, she has a deep commitment to women’s causes, in large part, from the challenges she faced in a totally male-dominated oil and gas industry. She has created an annual retreat for female corporate leaders from around the globe. Christine counts her sons as her greatest gifts: Joe (29), Max (26), and Matthew (24). While they were growing up, she coached their baseball teams and also challenged them on the ice in hockey. Her interests include the architecture of Andrea Palladio, the art of the Renaissance, and hiking anywhere in the world. WIMER High School Business Teacher Williamsport Area High School Week IV August 2 – August 8, 2015 Penn College KEYNOTE SPEAKER Mr. John Shegda John Shegda began his career at M&S Centerless Grinding as its third employee in 1987, but this wasn’t the intended course for his life. John graduated from Penn State that year with his sights set on medical school, but felt an obligation to give the family business a try since his father had put him through college. Quickly, John realized he had a natural ability for the trade, and thoroughly enjoyed making things with his hands. John committed to stay with the company in 1988. By 1990, he was leading it, and has never looked back. Though not large, the company, under John’s direction, has grown tenfold in the last twenty-five years, and has developed a global presence. M&S Grinding, once solely a regional specialty manufacturer, now focuses on solving difficult manufacturing problems in high-tech, high-growth industries like medical, aerospace, fiber optic, power generation and auto racing for companies around the world. Though both the financial and growth aspects of the company have been important focal points, it is the culture of the company in which John takes the most pride. Operating under the principle that they are to be a positive impact on the lives of those they come in contact with, company personnel believe in, and act on, a set of sixteen core values. Values like, “Seek to Understand”, “Have Integrity”, or “Take the Leap” guide all decision-making, resulting in an organization that acts in unison for the benefit of the customer, and ultimately for society. John believes in “giving back” and especially to the manufacturing sector that he believes in deeply. He spends a significant amount of time advocating for workforce development and changing perceptions about manufacturing. He is a chapter president of The National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA), and sits on the Board of Directors of a number of organizations focused on advancing the manufacturing industry. He believes strongly in the energy and brilliance of today’s youth, as well as, the tremendous opportunity that exists for young people in the field of manufacturing. The most important, and supportive, relationship in his life is with his best friend, Patty, his wife of twenty-two years. They have two children, both college age, and well on their way to making their own mark in the world. The family lives in suburban Philadelphia.
