Mayor Copeland`s Old Settler`s Day Parade Float
Mayor Copeland’s Old Settler’s Day Parade Float
Tuesday, September 7 thru Saturday, September 11, 2010
Every year, Mayor Copeland reads with several 1st grade classes throughout the Olathe School
District. He selects 20 students to ride with him on his Parade Float for the Old Settler’s Day
Parade. This year, the Mayor asked the Olathe Teen Council to build his float for the parade.
With a theme of “Make a Splash with Reading,” the newly formed OTC spent several hours
buying supplies, planning for the event, and building the float. We met at the Public Works
Maintenance Facility at 400 E. Harold and went to work. A Streets Maintenance crew prepared
the trailer and all we had to do was decorate. We used chicken wire, lots of staples and glue,
along with thousands of individually placed tissue papers to create our “splash theme.” The
parade was a success and 5 OTC members even rode with the Mayor and his 20 students.
