President’s Comments
I would like to start this month’s comments by thanking a couple of individuals
for their hard work. Ron Sahr has served on the board in many positions for years
and I am sure we will continue to see him at meetings. He is full of ideas and
always willing to pitch in. Tom McGeehan has served as the clubs Corresponding
Secretary over the past three years. This is not a glamorous job, but is a very
important one and Tom did a great job. I would also like to say thank you to Jean Nygaard for her years of
service. Jean has put in many volunteer hours making arrangements for the Pelican Spring Classic and selling
Calendar Raffle Tickets. She sold over 40 tickets this year! Quite an achievement. As many of you have heard,
Jean has put in her resignation as Tournament Director. She will be missed.
I want to welcome Steve Hall and Lester Sjoblom to our Board of Directors. I know both of these people
and I feel very fortunate to have them as part of our board. Lester is the new Corresponding Secretary but has
been the backbone of our newsletter over the past three years. Steve along with Guy Kimball have been the
guys behind the club outings. They have done a great job in choosing new locations with great fishing and
accommodations. Thank you both for agreeing to serve. I also want to thank Jim Mohr, Jr. for his willingness
to be a candidate for board member. It was a very close vote. I would like to invite Jim to attend the board
meetings and dig in wherever he feels comfortable. Getting involved is a sure way of ending up on the board.
Lastly, your involvement and input
as members is valuable and
appreciated. I would like to invite any
member to attend the board meetings
held the Tuesday before our general
membership meetings. If you are
unable to attend but want to share ideas
or comments with the board I can be
reached at 293-2491 or by email at
[email protected].
Best Fishes,
Chad Maloy
Thank You For Your Service

Special arrangements have been made with
the North Dakota Game & Fish Department to
hold a training session for those that signed up
the program at the February annual meeting.
The training session for the Hooked on
Fishing program will be held at 5:00 p.m.
Thursday, March 25 at the Royal Fork

The 12 members that signed up for training
are encouraged to attend, along with any other
club members that are interested in becoming
ND Game & Fish Department certified
volunteer instructors.

February Meeting Review - Marv Koep
by Jeremy Frie
Legendary angler and guide, Marv Koep of Brainerd, MN entertained the FM Walleyes audience at the
February meeting. Marv gave a laid back, informal presentation on walleye fishing. “It’s more than the fish you
catch, it’s the people you meet” said Marv as he began his presentation. “Keep it simple and you’ll have more
fun”. A few things I picked up during the presentation included:
• Marv likes redtail minnows. Keep them fresh and lively! Hook them on the top area
of the minnow near the tail for best results when rigging.
• Use #2 or larger hooks when using large minnows.
• When guiding customers, live bait rigging seems to be the most effective. He uses a
long rod (7 ? ft) with a fast tip and PowerPro line.
• Use jigs in the fall and don’t be afraid to try deep water jigging (30-60 ft of water).
• If the walleyes aren’t biting, don’t be afraid to switch species. Bass and northern action
can be fast and furious. Use plastic baits and slider jigs for best results.
• Fish new lakes when you can. The challenge to catch fish in a new area is what it’s all
about.
• Believe your electronics! You can’t catch fish if you don’t see them.
Thanks to Marv for putting on a great presentation. Mark your calendars for Thursday, March 18, as expert
walleye angler, Sam Anderson, will entertain the FM Walleyes crowd.
Notes of Thanks have been received from several scout groups and Y-Camp attendees that have benefitted
from the contributions we have made this past year. These will be made available for review at Anglers Night.

MARCH 2004
Fishing Personalities by Jack Fuller
JOHN LOHMAN
I have to admit it was a little intimidating interviewing a veteran newspaper writer
with John’s qualifications and experience. After all John has worked with and/or hired
some of the best writers The Forum has on its staff, as well as being an accomplished
writer himself. I wondered if I was silently being critiqued. But John was too much of
a gentleman to be openly critical of this amateur.
If you live in the circulation area of The Forum, or have been involved in outdoor
sports for any number of years, you certainly have heard of John Lohman.
John started his newspaper career at the bottom as a delivery boy and worked up to
the top as news editor and even The Editor of The Forum for a couple of years before
retiring. Even though he earned a degree in engineering, he chose to follow his roots
and pursue the newspaper business as his career.
John became interested in hunting and fishing at a young age. His uncle owned a cabin near Sioux Narrows
in Manitoba. When his uncle passed away, John’s father made several trips to the property to dispose of it.
John accompanied him and did some Walleye fishing. “It was good and I was hooked for life” John
commented. That was just the start of many hunting/ fishing trips. During his career with The Forum, the
editor asked John to write the hunting column (Gerry Rafftery was writing the fishing column at that time).
John thought it over and decided to decline because he was already on staff full-time, working his way up the
management chain. But the editor was persistent and John became the new hunting editor. Years later Gerry
Rafftery retired and John inherited both jobs in addition to being city editor for the newspaper.
Being the “outdoor editor” did have its merits. Even though he was swamped in his managerial duties, John
worked the outdoors on his own time fishing with and writing about some of the better known anglers around.
Names like; Gary Korsgaden, Mike Miller, Brian and Kevin Olmstead, Ron Sahr, Tom Backer, Dave Randash,
and the Lindner brothers to mention a few.
John was and still is a friend of the sportsman. I recall reading his column in the Sunday Forum religiously.
It was down to earth, stories on the water and in the field telling in detail experiences that were seasonally
timed. They were energizing reports that made me feel like, “I am going to get out there and do some of that
this week-end myself”.
John was a friend of wildlife also. He stood up for his causes and spoke out for the betterment of hunting
and fishing in North Dakota. Because of this he received many commendations. To list a few of his “fishery
awards”: The Dakota Chapter of the American Fishery Society Award presented by F.M. Walleyes, The North
Dakota Report All Poachers Program Award, The 1992 Sportsman of the Year Award from the Lake Agassiz
Kiwanis, The North Dakota Chapter of Wildlife Society Award, The North Dakota Wildlife Federation Award,
The United Sportsmen of North Dakota Award, and others. John said, “The main award is watching young
people get involved”. He compliments F.M. Walleyes for their contributions and success in that area.
As a tip for the readers, I asked, what is one important ingredient to help fishermen be successful? “Bait…
Look to the bait dealers for help with what is going on in the area you intend to fish and what are they using.
Be careful because some lie, but you soon get to know them. One who never lies and you can count on is Lee
Brenna”. Those of you who know Lee also know that to be fact.
On a more humorous note; John, Gerry Rafftery, Gary Korsgaden, and Boyd Christianson (WDAY) made a
trip to Manitoba to do some Walleye fishing. After they arrived they were shipped out by boat to their fishing
area where they would be staying for a few days. A plane would follow up with most of their gear. They fished
all day the first day in a down pour. After fishing that day they were wet and tired and ready to turn in. The
plane was late, but came in and their gear was set on the dock. As the plane was leaving, someone said, “they
didn’t leave any sleeping bags”! All that was in the cabin were bare beds. So Gary Korsgaden stayed up all
night himself keeping the fire going. John said, “we all talked about the number of bags we each had back
home (which did a lot of good). The number reached 13. Those 13 bags could have been very comfortable”.
After the trip they found out there is a lake named “13 Bag Lake” in honor of that adventure. John claims he
can find it on a map.
Continue to enjoy your retirement John, you deserve it. But don’t stop “rippin lips”.

MARCH 2004
January Meeting Review -- Scott Fairbairn
by Jeremy Frie
Scott Fairbairn, professional walleye angler from Hager City, Wisconsin,
recently entertained the FM Walleyes club members and guests on various fishing techniques.
4 Cornerstones of Walleye Success
1. Jigs
Use high visibility line –easier to see the bite before you feel it. • Start with the lightest jig you can get
away with. • Superlines will allow for low stretch and can be a shortcut to success. • Short biters –
bulk up with soft plastic and use a stinger hook. • Knot placement – move within the eyelet for optimal
hook set. • Plastics – stay on when ripped through weeds. • Color – Start with multi-color and work
backwards from there.
2. Live Bait Rigs
Leader length – 4-6’ is best – longer will allow for better bait movement. • Rhythm – lift and drop the
rod tip. • Light hooks – Leeches (#6), Crawlers (#4), minnows (#1-4). • Light line – use the lightest
possible – 6 lb is best. • Hook color – any color will work just fine most of the time. • Bait – make sure
it is the liveliest bait you can find. • Floating jig heads – makes it easier for the fish to inhale if there is
slack in the leader.
3. Spinners
Blade styles: Colorado – spins at 0.7-0.8 mph. Indiana – spins at 0.9-1.0 mph. Willow – spins at 1-3 mph
• Ambush feeders – will attack bait that swims by – use small blades • Roaming feeders – will look to
eat – use larger blades. • Plating and holographics – silver of gold plated blades work well. Holographic
are Scott’s favorite. • Beads – Make sure you have enough to separate the spinner from the hook. •
Floats – best used over the weeds. • Leader length – shorter = jerky motion, longer = more glide. • Bait
– Crawlers are Scott’s favorite. Leeches and minnows can work too.
4. Crankbaits
Avoid the lucky lure syndrome – all baits of the same type, size, and color should be the same. •
Supertuning – put the lure in the water and drive 3 times as fast as the normal trolling speed to see how
the lure runs next to the boat. • Line diameter – thinner = lures run deeper. • Hooks – Don’t experiment
too much here. Make sure they are sharp. • Rods – Always buy in pairs. This allows you to replicate a
good thing. • Body styles –2 main types: Natural – ex. Include Shad Raps &Wide Action – ex. Include
Husky Jerks • Colors – 3 basic patterns: Hot – like Firetiger / Natural – like perch, shad / Chrome –
metallic, high flash

CLUB FISHING OUTINGS
From the time you unload your boat, to the time you weigh in your walleyes, you will feel the cooperative efforts in all
those who participate in the outings. The outings are friendly gatherings that are planned to be simple and stress-free. All
of the outings are scheduled for two days, but if you can only make one day, that’s not a problem. If you are fishing alone
you can count on assistance in getting your boat in and out of the water.
Social gatherings are quite common after the outings. We have had several potluck fish-frys and everyone is welcome.
Even is you forget your dish and don’t catch any fish! I’ve had a lot of meals provided by my girls - they have all the luck!
There is a lot of conversation and even some education when everyone replays their day on the water. I have information
about camping and cabins when available prior to each outing.
The rules of the outings are pretty basic. Although friendly, there is competition. Winners are awarded plaques at monthly
meetings and there is a traveling trophy awarded for the highest year-end combined weight. there is also a “kid’s
competition” at each outing – 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies are awarded as well as a yearly traveling trophy.
All club members are welcome. I hope to see more of you participate in the club outings this year. If you have any
questions, please call Steve at home (218) 233-7011, work (701) 237-0435 or cell (701) 261-4379 or Scott at home (218)

By Russ Tweiten
On Saturday April 24th legendary angler Al Linder will speak at Atonement Lutheran Church in Fargo

message will blend both passions into one talk.
Tickets will go on sale March 8th at a cost of $10.00 for all ages and must be purchased in advance.
Tickets include admission, a fish dinner and free drawings for a variety of items donated by area businesses.

Letter to the Editor…
I would like to thank the Board of Directors and members at large of F-M Walleyes Unlimited fishing club for giving
me the chance to have a very active part in the organization.
I have a been a member for 15 years and have served on the Board as Recording Secretary for seven years (filled and
unexpired term and was reelected for two other terms). I have worked the Pelican Lake tournament for the past 10 years,
seven years as Bob Dobler's assistant (Bob showed me the ropes). The past two years I was the tournament director which
meant procuring sponsors, putting together all other tasks, organizing workers and trying to put on the best tournament
that I could possibly do.
I had to prove to certain members on the Board that I could do the job, which I did in making it a very successful
event. And I had a lot of fun in doing it.
I believe there are many people out there that think this is a job that can be done in a month or two. I would start
working in October and continue right up until tournament was over with. A lot of long hours, hard work goes into it.
The 2004 Pelican Lake fishing tournament is a go, but I will not be a part of it. I have a few issues with certain things
this year, so I have chosen to step down as tournament director.
I would like to say thanks to all of competitors and the volunteers that have assisted with the tournament. I met a lot of
great people and I will miss working with you again this year. Please forgive me and may God be with each and everyone
of you during this year's event.
Being the only woman on the Board of Directors with 10 guys was a challenge. It sometimes took a little extra effort
to get other Board members to hear my ideas and suggestions. I would like to encourage other women to follow in my
footsteps and become involved in the club.
I was asked whether I will go to the meetings or be part of the club. I have renewed my membership, spent the past
five months organizing the tournament and have sold 40 calendar raffles. So you see I am still an active member, but will
no longer be involved with the Pelican Lake tournament.
One last comment. I do not like the way in which our walleye club is starting to go. I feel that everything is about
money and not the socializing, teaching fishing to adults as well as the kids, that the club was noted for in the past. Where
is the family part of this club??
Thank you all for putting up with me and may God be with you in finding a new tournament director that will continue
the tradition of running a good, clean, fun and successful tournament.

WALLEYE LINES

MARCH 2004
What is FM Walleyes Unlimited, Inc.?
FM Walleyes is a group of people dedicated to promoting conservation, sportsmanship, and education in
respects to walleye fishing. The club was registered as a Minnesota Non-Profit Corporation in 1977 established
for the improvement of fishing standards for it’s members and the community at large. Through good habits of
taking fish and sportmanlike conduct in this process, better fishing should result for all.
Monthly meetings are held the third Thursday of each month (except July & December) where club members,
professionals and equipment manufacturers demonstrate new equipment, techniques and ideas with members.
Past speakers have included Babe Winkelman, Tony Dean, Ted Takasaki and Keith Kavajecv and many other
local and nationally known anglers.
Conservation of the taking, release and stocking of walleye in our area lakes, and learning what members can
do to improve lake conditions, access to lakes and facilities in local areas are fundamental principles of our club.
Local DNR officials are invited to meetings to speak and provide written information to the club. The club
provides funding for rearing ponds, lighting at accesses and docks. We also provide donations to the Boy Scouts,
Lure ‘em for Life, and the YMCA for Youth fishing programs. Pathways to Fishing programs are put on by club
members frequently.
Club outings are held monthly from April to September on local lakes. Members share facilities, equipment
and techniques during these club outings. Members
pay a small fee to compete in a low key fishing competition
