Board of Directors
Employees took the stage as the song “We are the Champions” played and the balloons fell from the ceiling.
Sporting our red shirts with the big heart, each waved a sign indicating their years of employment.
Big Dreams Start Small
Celebrating the Heart of a Champion was
the theme of this year’s Heartstrings in
Bloom gala. Heartstrings is in its 15th year
of employing adults with intellectual/
developmental disabilities within the
community. Thirteen Heartstrings
employees along with several staff and
board members greeted nearly 300 guests
as they entered the reception area at the
Overland Park Sheraton. A photo gallery
of historical posters and images from the
past lined the hallway entry into the
Welcome Reception and Silent Auction,
sponsored by TCI Transportation.
Board President, Bob Brandt, welcomed
guests and introduced incoming Board
President, Christine Schwermann to the
group. Chris Newman accepted The Key
to Independence Award on behalf of
Netsmart. They were honored for their
enthusiastic support of Heartstrings as a
Goody Delivery® business, a Custom Gift
Basket customer and their commitment
to volunteering.
The live auction included an original
painting donated by Michael Savage
featuring Kansas City. The highlight of
this year’s live auction featured tickets to
the Ryder Cup to be held in Minnesota this
October. Guests eagerly began bidding for
these items, which elevated our evening’s
total to an all-time high.
Rex Hudler, color commentator for the
Kansas City Royals, narrated the video
presentation titled “Celebrating the Heart
of a Champion.” Rex also presented a
personal video message of support for
Heartstrings Community Foundation®.
As the video concluded, Heartstrings
employees and staff members appeared
on stage holding signs indicating their
number of years of employment. As the
song “We are the Champions” played,
balloons dropped from the ceiling in
celebration. The Fund-A-Need Auction
immediately followed and raised over
$40,000! The evening concluded with
dancing to the fun music of Mark Marek’s
band, Private Stock.
Twin Financial sponsored our Raffle
Drawing this year. The first name drawn
for the top prize, the Sports Package, went
to Aaron Kuhn. He will be enjoying tickets
to area team events like KU Basketball,

The Seas of Social
Marketing
By Derek Crocker
“Oh God, thy sea is so great,
and my boat is so small”
N
– Breton Fisherman’s Prayer
on-profit organizations are
constantly addressing the challenges
of informing their community about their
organization and how they can help. Much
of their marketing energy focuses on
social media profiles and webpages. The
gift of having this cost-free connection
with the immediate and global community
allows these organizations to tell their
story. It’s instant and fulfilling. The web of
connectivity has become like the seas –
flowing, crashing, moving.
Since last year, the marketing team has
been spending a lot of its energy behind
Heartstrings’ website and social media to
navigate our vessel through these
turbulent and sometimes treacherous
digital waters. HCF® is very excited about
the launch of its new website layout and
separate Facebook pages for On My Own®
and Sacks on Santa Fe stores. The updated
layout of the website is more user friendly
and allows the developers to maintain the
site with more ease while creating more
eye-catching pages and posts. Since the
April launch, Sacks on Santa Fe and On
My Own can now easily post ads and sales
for their respective store and brand
themselves uniquely. We have also seen a
growth in extra followers on Twitter,
ranging from individuals to companies, as
well as other non-profits. We are now up
to 115 followers and counting.
Like so many instances on the open
waters, sailors and captains would view
over the horizon. “And the seas grant each
man new hope,” Columbus would say,
“Their sleep becomes dreams of home.”
As Heartstrings joins the other non-profit
travelers in this vast sea of the digital age,
the journey continues to become even
more adventurous.

A Tisket a Tasket –
It’s a Raffle Basket
By Amanda Henning, Director of Retail Sales
A
s a non-profit organization, Heartstrings uses many avenues for fundraising.
My personal favorite is our once-a-quarter basket raffle. A lot of thought and
preparation goes into making these baskets as exciting for our customers as
possible, and with that, comes exciting fundraising profits for Heartstrings! One
of the past baskets included our big end of the year “An Evening with Cirque Du
Soleil” basket, which included tickets to Cirque Du Soleil’s Toruk, dinner and
hotel accommodations downtown (designed for easy access to the Sprint Center),
a set of stunning Waterford Crystal Champagne glasses and an assortment of our
signature Heartstrings Goodies. No basket is complete without the Goodies!
Richard Pillege of Netsmart won our second-quarter basket, which included 2
Royals tickets, 4 Chiefs tickets with a parking pass, 8 tickets for Advanced Laser
Tag, a Weber Smokey Joe® grill and a whole basket full of Weber grilling
accessories, and, you guessed it, a variety of fun Heartstrings Goodies. Raffle
tickets for our quarterly baskets may be purchased at either HCF store, On My
Own or Sacks On Santa Fe, or from one of our Goody Delivery teams. The tickets
are only $1; but, if you buy more, we will make you a deal! I can’t give you any
clues on what the upcoming baskets will include; but you can check our website
www.heartstringscf.org or follow us on Facebook for the latest updates. I can
guarantee it will be a great bang for your buck!!

Strategic Planning
Continues as Board
President Passes
the Baton
A
fter introducing Christine Schwermann
to the gala guests, Bob Brandt officially
passed the baton to Christie on May 1 as
President of the Board of Directors. For over
Christine Schwermann
a year now, Christie has been working very
closely with the Heartstrings Office of Development and has
become very familiar with everyone in the Heartstrings
organization. She is eager to help launch the vision for our future.
Other elected board officers include Teri Butler-Jones as Vice
President, Roseann Sanders, Secretary and Cory Davis, Treasurer.
All are excited to fulfill their roles on the Heartstrings Board of
Directors. We are all thankful for Bob’s service as President for the
past two years and for all our board members generous gifts of
time, talent and treasure!
The Board of Directors has been participating in the process of
Strategic Planning, which included having the staff participate as
well in the SWOT process. Together they have completed evaluating
the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) to
Heartstrings as an organization. The perspectives were collected and
analyzed, resulting in a recommendation to create three committees
to further explore the current state of the Organization, Revenue
Streams and Communication/Marketing efforts. These three
committees are currently meeting and analyzing their findings.
This process will continue into early 2017 and is expected to
culminate in a defined path for the future of Heartstrings.

Turning Lemons into Lemonade
T
his past March one of Heartstrings favorite people was facing a difficult change in her
life – selling her longtime home. She decided to put a positive spin on the experience
by holding a huge garage sale to benefit Heartstrings Community Foundation! We had
signage and brochures at the event to get the word out about the services we provide in the
community. Sadness turned to joy as buyers shopped for just the right item to complement
their home and funds were collected to support Heartstrings.
Some of our readers probably own a piece of furniture that has been lovingly
reupholstered by Becky Price. If so, you know her as a creative, talented, energetic and
generous person. We wholeheartedly agree; in fact, Heartstrings presented her with the
Key to Independence Award in 2014! Becky believes in Heartstrings and thinks of many
ways to provide beneficial support to our organization. She is now enjoying her new
home, and we look forward to many more fun events with her!

Pattern of Growth and Giving in 15 years
By Anne Hull, Director of Development
P
roviding 15 years of Heartstrings
services in the community is a
significant milestone worthy of celebration.
As we have been gathering informational
statistics to help plan for the future, we
have enjoyed seeing the photos from our
humble beginning and the changing look
of our place of business as well as our staff
and employees. Taking time to review the
difference in numbers of employees, staff,
vehicles, income and costs has revealed a
steady pattern of growth since 2001.

It’s not surprising to see that expenses are
the fastest growing part of Heartstrings
Community Foundation. In the beginning
we used donated vans; but, when the
number of employees grew, we had to
purchase more vans to provide
transportation to our Goody Delivery
businesses. Thankfully, the numbers
reveal a strong donor base that has
allowed Heartstrings to provide a
quality service, growing every facet
of the service each year.
“You don’t have to be
great to get started,
but you have to get
started to be great.”
Many of our readers already donate on a
consistent basis; but, if you’re not one of
them, we can make it very easy for you to
become a strong, regular donor. One of
the best ways to give your donation is to
set up a monthly withdrawal. You can be
confident that you have invested in an
organization that lives its mission using
the highest ethical standards. When you
go to our website, www.heartstringscf.org,
you will find a large red DONATE button.
This will take you to a screen where you
can select a specific donation amount and
you have the choice to make your donation
a recurring one! A monthly donation is
a great way to insure that Heartstrings
has your steady support.
If you are computer challenged, we have
included a form on the back panel of
this newsletter to assist you in setting
up automatic bank withdrawals. Just
complete the form and send it to us.
We thank you from All of our Hearts

From the Heart of the Executive Director
Do you have a DREAM? Do you have goals . . . a strategy in
achieving your dream?
Heartstrings has a DREAM! Our DREAM is to become
National, providing employment opportunities and choice all
over the world!
YES, this is a BIG DREAM! All dreams have small beginnings.
Dedication and passion is the ticket to sustainability and
growth. Heartstrings has a history of 15 years of growth,
success, dedication and passion.
While looking back over the last 15 years and looking to the
future, I liken our journey to a train–everything is constructed
in steps. First, you have to prepare the ground/foundation and
lay the track/staff. The Engine/Management Team/Board of
Directors is what keeps us moving forward. Growth requires
additional ground preparation, tracks laid and acquiring
additional cars for the journey.
The Heartstrings staff and Board of Directors have been
working diligently for the past year assessing where we are and
what our next steps are to gaining ground towards achieving
our goal. The assessment results have concluded that
Heartstrings has laid the track and the engine is a well-oiled
machine, pulling cars containing 45 employees, 101 Goody
Delivery businesses, several hundred donors and volunteers. It
is time to lay more tracks–expanding our territory and adding
additional cars. The Management Team and Board of Directors
are preparing the ground in 2016 with full intentions of laying
tracks in 2017.
Now, back to what it takes to achieve Heartstrings’ BIG
DREAM. Dedication and Passion is the ticket. Many of you
reading this letter have bought a ticket (or MANY tickets) and
traveled to our current location. I want to thank all of you for
your dedication and passion for riding this far with us. NOW
is the time to lay more tracks. Do you have the Dedication and
Passion to BUY another ticket and continue with us to our
next destination? I hope so! I can promise the ride will never
be boring–bumpy at times, exciting, scary, challenging–but
every NEW destination will be well worth the ride!

The Cure for Boredom
M
om, I’m bored. There’s nothing to do. Sound familiar? Adults struggle with this
same malady; it just manifests itself in a different way. Well, we have the answer
that just might help you get over your case of boredom or the “woe is me” syndrome.
Call Gene Holland at 913.649.5700 or email [email protected] and
volunteer today. We have opportunities for everyone from teenager to adult. Whether
you can help out once a week or once a year, we can plug you into our program.
Do you like to be front and center? Then you might enjoy assisting a team leader as they
transport a Goody Delivery team to one of the many businesses we serve in the metro.
Getting the cart loaded with goodies and into the van starts the process, which
hopefully ends in helping employees make the sale. Perhaps you’d rather be behind the
scenes and help a team that does all of the measuring and packaging of the goodies that
go on the cart. The point is we have a place for you to serve; and, this is only one example.
We have two big fundraising events that require lots of additional volunteers to help
make the events successful. So, whether it’s finding items for the silent auction for the
Gala or helping to set up and decorate, we could use your help. The first of June finds us participating in the Hospital Hill Run, both
as participants and volunteers at the race event. Once again, these are just a small snippet of the opportunities we have available for
you to help us as we strive toward our mission every day. The next time you hear the words “I’m bored,” we hope you’ll reach out and
let us help you discover the best way to make a difference in your life and the lives of others.
No More Sales Tax

eartstrings Community Foundation has received a Private Letter
Ruling issued by the Kansas Department of Revenue stating that
we will no longer be required to collect and pay sales tax to the State
of Kansas. Therefore, beginning July 1, 2016, our retail sales WILL

Staffing Updates
H
eartstrings strives for excellence in all
we do; therefore, we strive to hire
only the best applicants. Applicants must
provide three letters of reference with their
application before an interview will be
scheduled. Once that is received, we
contact the applicant and set an interview
or a day to shadow our teams. This shadow
day provides a realistic job preview for the
applicant and an opportunity for us to see
the applicant in the job situation, not just in
a short interview. A position is not offered
until the references have been contacted,
the criminal background check has been
submitted, and we have had the opportunity to get feedback from our current staff
and employees, in addition to talking with
the applicant. Right now, we have some
very promising applicants.
Since our last newsletter, we have hired a
new staff person for a permanent position.
Veronica Rios Rodriquez works Tuesday
and Thursday each week, taking teams on
Goody Deliveries. Veronica has a variety of
experience and is a great addition to the
Heartstrings staff. Two staff members, Kim
Lane and Marie Dowling, will be going on
an “as needed” basis for the summer.
Anyone with high school students participating in sports knows that summertime
can be busier than the school year! We are
hopeful they will be able to return in
the fall.
Gene Holland is now the Director of
Employment Services, supervising team
leaders in addition to his other duties of
transportation coordinator, volunteer
coordinator, scheduling and team leader.
Rosanne Thiry is now the Assistant
Executive Director and will focus more on
the administrative needs of Heartstrings
for growth, in addition to maintaining
most of her current duties of licensing
maintenance, training and liaison to
families and outside agencies.

The Big Sweep – From Trash to Treasure
E
veryone needs to do it from time to time. So, we
want you to remember us when you do your
“spring cleaning,” even if it’s on the hottest day of the
year or in the dead of winter. Perhaps you’re changing
your color scheme at home; that’s the perfect time to let
someone else enjoy your former, beloved treasures by
donating them to On My Own. Gently used furniture
and home décor items may be dropped off at our
location at 7086 W. 105th Street in Overland Park from
10 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.
Be a Sweetheart:
Clean Out Your Closet!
Now, when it comes to cleaning out your closet, please
remember Sacks on Santa Fe, located in Downtown
Overland Park. We offer buyers the opportunity to
purchase both gently used as well as new accessories in
addition to finding gently-used clothing items to add to
anyone’s wardrobe. Our employees take great pride in
sorting through donations to make our colorful window
displays. Teams inspect the donated items to be sure
they are clean and ready for purchase.

for resale in our stores is that this gives Heartstrings

the opportunity to employ adults with intellectual/
developmental disabilities in the workplace. This
experience translates into life skills as well, such as doing the laundry and pressing the clothes or dusting the shelves and items on display,
much the same way one would keep their own house/room clean. The truth is we treasure your donations and help them find a good new
home. We value your support as a donor as well as a shopper in our stores. It’s one way we can make a difference in our community and
you are a BIG PART of it.
