Are you planning a wedding, shower or anniversary party?
Give the gift of compassionate care while thoughtfully remembering your loved ones on your special day.
Make a meaningful donation to Hospice of Orleans in lieu of traditional favors. Your donation will help support Hospice of Orleans’ mission of providing for those afflicted with end-of-life illness and support to their
families. Let us help make your day perfect.
We are grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Gary Berger who decided
in lieu of gifts for their wedding celebration, they would
like donations to be made to Hospice of Orleans in honor
of Gary’s late mother, Nancy. Katie reflected:“the comfort
and hospitality you provided helped make the last few
days of Nancy’s life on this side of eternity a
little easier to bear.”
We at Hospice were honored to be a part of Nancy’s journey, and humbled to be a part of the Berger’s special day.

It might be the most essential and least appreciated sense. The skin is our largest
sensory interface with the world, and it’s always on. When we grow older, our sense
of touch degrades. At about age 20, we start to lose nerve endings in the skin at a
rate of about 1 percent each year. The loss is so gradual that we might not even
notice. Over time, it can take a corresponding toll on quality of life. The cruel irony
is that sensitivity fades, the more we need to be touched-but the opportunity to experience touch often diminishes as well. Aging people get touched less.
Studies show a slew of benefits associated with touch and the message is clear ;
touch is so powerful that some experts recommend elderly clients receive regular,
professional massages. As we grow old touch is a communication that transcends
Katie Crooks, Hospice LMT
age and time. No matter how old we are, we all love to have our hand held, our
backs rubbed, or the feel of a warm embrace. Gentle massage lowers stress hormone levels, improves blood flow and relieves tension. The cascade of physical benefits is amazing and the good news
is, there are all kinds of ways to harness this power. It is with the elderly that touch can have the greatest significance
because although the sense of touch diminishes with age, the impact of touch increases. Hospice of Orleans embraces
this power by offering Massage Therapy, Pet Therapy and promoting a loving, family-like atmosphere. We are very
thankful for Katie Cooks, LMT and the amazing gift of touch she brings to Hospice patients.

Thank you to all of the volunteers, community members and local businesses who participated in the annual Hospice
bouquet sale. It is with great appreciation that we are able to report net proceeds were over $8800.00 and the
bouquets were flying out the doors. We’d like to thank everyone for making this event a success and look forward to
next year’s sale.

Hospice is the proud recipient of a donation made by a local farmer through the Monsanto Fund. We are grateful
for generous gifts like these which enable us to continue the many services offered by Hospice of Orleans.
What will your legacy be?
Hospice of Orleans sincerely appreciates planned gifts. Leaving a Bequest to Hospice through your Will and
Testament will ensure that your personal wishes are carried out. Your Will can be tailored to fit your personal
goals and needs. Wills are relatively easy to execute and may reduce or eliminate gift and estate taxes. A charitable Bequest may be made in a variety of ways. Please contact Brittany Dix (585)589-0809 with any questions.
Meet just a few of the dedicated, compassionate and caring staff members at Hospice of Orleans. We are very
blessed and so thankful to have Flo, Shari and Betty as part of our incredible team, with years of combined
experience and so much heart.
Flo Johnston, HHA

I didn’t know much about Hospice until late 1996 when my mother was diagnosed with ALS and the specialist involved suggested she have Hospice
come. She was still living in her own home. She didn’t want to go to a nursing facility, so when she got much worse, in April 1997, we moved her
into our home where Hospice of Orleans continued caring for her as well as looking out for the welfare of my husband and I. When my mother went
on to her heavenly reward, my husband and I had gone out to celebrate my next day Birthday. When we arrived home, Chris Fancher (Hospice Social Worker) who had been staying with my mother while we were out, met us at the door to say that my mother had just passed on to HeavenJuly 27, 1997. Hospice was there for us at every turn and without them I don’t think I could have ever been able to go through all of this with my
mother. From that point on, we made an effort to donate to any Hospice event, memorial, anything we could do to promote this wonderful organization. When fund raising started for the building of a Hospice residence in Albion, we contributed as often and as much as we could manage. As the
building started taking shape, I would stop by occasionally to check on the progress and would jokingly remark that maybe I would be a resident
there some day. Hmmm—little did I know.
Once the building was completed and an opening ceremony took place, I was there to celebrate and be in awe of the beauty and thought that was
put into this much needed facility.
For a very short time I volunteered to help in the kitchen for lunches, but my employment with two jobs got in the way I had to stop. Then, in
January 2016, I was diagnosed with cancer. When I found out the extent of it, I said “no hospitals or treatment-please just give me comfort care
with Orleans Hospice”. I received care and concern in my home for about ten weeks and then my next step was to move into the beautiful building I
had teased about just a few years prior.
It is difficult to find the most appropriate words to describe what it is like to a resident in the Martin Linsin Residence. When visitors ask me how I
feel about this sudden change in my life and how I like being here, I always search for an answer. Everytime I give the same reply, “Of course I would
rather be home, but this residence is the next best place I could be!
