At the entrance to the Sanctuary, here in Westminster
Cathedral, is the stone commemorating the visit made by
Pope John Paul II in 1982.
Today we take part in another occasion of great historical
importance: the visit to this Cathedral of His Holiness Pope
Benedict XVI. Today he celebrates Mass here, with
representatives of the entire Catholic Church in England,
Scotland and Wales. Today we pray with him for the healing
and renewal in our lives that only Christ can give. In His
Precious Blood is our Redemption.
We welcome the Holy Father with such love and assurances
of prayers. Today we echo and renew the long tradition of
Catholics in this land of profound loyalty to the Holy Father.
His Ministry as Successor of St Peter gives great strength to
the Catholic Church throughout the world. We are so proud
to welcome him here today.

Welcome to Westminster Cathedral
The Cathedral has a legal responsibility to look after your health, safety and
welfare. Therefore the following guidelines and provisions have been put in
place: please take a moment to read through them.
Please ensure your mobile phone is switched off at all times, and please
refrain from talking before and during the service.
The use of private cameras and video or sound recording equipment is
not permitted in the Cathedral.
If you have a pre-existing health or welfare issue with which you may
require assistance, please make your steward aware of this before the
service starts.
Should you feel unwell during the service, please do not hesitate to bring
this to the attention of your steward.
Toilet facilities are located to the right of the Sanctuary; please ask a
steward for directions.
During the Papal processions, the greeting of young people on the Piazza
and while the Holy Father is greeting the people of Wales in St Paul’s
Chapel please remain in your place. Screens will be brought into the nave
of the Cathedral to allow you see what is happening.
At the end of the service please remain in your seat until the clergy have
processed from the Cathedral. Then please follow the instructions of the
stewards to help you leave the Cathedral.
In an emergency please remain seated and follow the instructions of
your steward.
In addition, please note the following instructions:
The kneeler in front of your seat must be lowered and remain so for the
entire duration of the ceremony.
It is permitted to applaud after the address of welcome by the Archbishop
of Westminster, and as the Holy Father returns to the sacristy after the
prayer with the people of Wales. Please refrain from applauding after the
Homily.
Two short periods of silence will be observed: the first will be after the
Homily has been given, and the second after the distribution of Holy
Communion and the Communion hymn have finished.

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews.
Now Christ has come, as the high priest of all the blessings which were to come.
He has passed through the greater, the more perfect tent, which is better than
one made by men’s hands because it is not of this created order; and he has
entered the sanctuary once and for all, taking with him not the blood of goats
and bull calves, but his own blood, having won an eternal redemption for us.The
blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer are sprinkled on those who
have incurred defilement and they restore the holiness of their outward lives;
how much more effectively the blood of Christ, who offered himself as the
perfect sacrifice to god through the eternal Spirit, can purify our inner self from
dead actions so that we do our service to the living god.
He brings a new covenant, as the mediator, only so that the people who were
called to an eternal inheritance may actually receive what was promised: his
death took place to cancel the sins that infringed the earlier covenant.
This is the word of the Lord.

A reading from the holy gospel according to John.
Glory to you, Lord.
It was Preparation Day, and to prevent the bodies remaining on the
cross during the sabbath – since that sabbath was a day of special
solemnity – the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the
bodies taken away. Consequently the soldiers came and broke the legs
of the first man who had been crucified with him and then of the other.
When they came to Jesus, they found he was already dead, and so
instead of breaking his legs one of the soldiers pierced his side with a
lance; and immediately there came out blood and water. This is the
evidence of one who saw it – trustworthy eveidence, and he knows he
speaks the truth – and he gives it so that you may believe as well.
Because all this happened to fulfil the words of scripture:
Not one bone of his will be broken;
and again, in another place scripture says:
They will look on the one whom they have pierced.
This is the gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen
and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the
Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being
with the Father.Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down
from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was

Father, we celebrate the memory of Christ, your
Son. We, your people and your ministers, recall
his passion, his resurrection from the dead, and

eternal salvation.
Look with favour on these offerings and accept
them as once you accepted the gifts of your

MEETING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE
On the steps of the Cathedral in front of the West Door, the Holy Father is greeted by a young
person.The Holy Father then briefly addresses the young people gathered in the Cathedral piazza.
The meeting with young people concludes with a blessing.

As the Holy Father processes up the south aisle, the Choir sings:

The Holy Father blesses a mosaic of St David, Patron of Wales, outside the Chapel of St Paul.
The mosaic, designed by Ifor Davies, was installed in the Cathedral early in September 2010, in
preparation for today’s Papal Mass.

In the Chapel of St Paul the Bishop of Wrexham, the Right Reverend Edwin Regan, greets the Holy
Father on behalf of the people of Wales.
The Holy Father addresses the people of Wales, gives a gift to Bishop Regan, and greets the
Welsh civic representatives who are present.

The Holy Father venerates the statue of Our Lady of the Taper, brought from the Welsh National
Shrine of Our Lady in Cardigan. The taper in the hands of Our Lady is lit.

as you are, and praise you in the everlasting kingdom of heaven.
