Today's scripture accounts reveal a little bit to us about first encounters that set in motion some very important scriptural lives. Isaiah has a momentous experience of God enthroned while the seraphim chant "Holy, holy, holy!" (Isaiah 6:3). Paul hints at his conversion and call to be an apostle when he refers to himself as one "born abnormally" (1 Corinthians 15:8), which is to say he is the only apostle--the "least," he calls himself--who did not know Jesus during his earthly ministry. We hear Luke's version of the first impression the disciples had of Jesus, when they learn an important lesson about being a follower of Jesus: you can labor all you want, but if you do not allow the Lord into your work, it will be in vain. When he enters, get ready to be amazed. FINAL IMPRESSIONS John, the only other evangelist to recount the story of the miraculous catch of fish, places the story after the resurrection of Christ from the dead, not at the beginning of his ministry as Luke does. Unlike Matthew and Mark, wherein the disciples follow Jesus upon his call, Luke seemed to know that his listeners would comprehend the call to discipleship better if it followed a miraculous sign. (And Peter's acknowledgment of his sinfulness echoes Isaiah's description of his unclean lips.) But whether it's BIBLICAL COURSE-ACTS OF THE APOSTLES EVERYTHING AND FOLLOWED JESUS Luke describing the beginning of the disciples following Jesus in mission or John's depiction of the risen Christ preparing his followers for the mission following his return to the Father, the point is the same, and remains the same for us today. Paul expresses it best. It does not matter who preaches the Gospel, or where or when, but only that it is, through the grace of God in us, preached and believed.Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company Today's Readings: Is 6:1-2a, 3-8; Ps 138:1-5, 7-8; 1 Cor 15:1-11; Lk 5:1-11 Right after the celebration of Easter, the solemnity of the Lord’s resurrection, the Catholic Church begins the continuous reading of the book of the Acts of the Apostles which deals basically with the inception and early development of the Church. The event of the Resurrection of the Lord marks a very crucial era in life of the Church. And the event of Pentecost began the unfolding of the mystery of the Church. Obviously, we cannot have a sound ecclesiology without throughly scrutinizing the book of the Acts of the Apostles. This very important book anchors together both the “old” and the “new”. The Acts of the Apostles narrates the story of the early Church and reveals the prominent role of the Holy Spirit in its development. It also portrays its remarkable humble beginning and explores its developmental challenges and how those challenges were handled. Notably, the two great apostles of the Risen Lord who were at the forefront of the early development of the Church were St. Peter and St. Paul. Indeed, the sacrifices they made are worth celebrating. This course seeks to emphasize God’s presence in the Church and the crucial roles played by the Apostles as they sought to fulfill the missionary mandate which Christ entrusted to the Church. It is my hope that by diving into and reading the Acts of the Apostles together within a class context, we shall come to a better appreciation of missionary character of both the universal and local Church. Our primary goal is what we can learn from the life and development of the early Church to address some of the issues that we wrestle with today on the local ecclesial level. The duration of the course is eight weeks, on Mondays only, begining on April 4, 2016 (first class) - May 23, 2016 (last class), from 10:00 am - 11:30 am at the St. Thomas Aquinas Hall. Course Facilitator: Fr. Edmund Afagbegee, SVD. If you wish to participate in the Bible study class, please sign up at the Parish Office. We thank all those parishioners that were concerned about the leaky roof in the church during the rain last Sunday. The buckets in the vestibule and side doors were not for leaks coming from the roof but for your wet umbrellas. Some parishioners preferred to take their umbrella to their seating area causing rain water to drip from the umbrella causing small puddles as others tracked on them. Be assured that the parish roof is in good condition, the buckets are for your wet umbrellas. NOW IS THE TIME FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION COME JOIN THE ST. PIUX X SCHOOL FAMILY St. Pius X 37 E. Emerson St. Chula Vista, CA 91911 (619) 422- 2015 We offer assistance through the Bishop Flores Scholarship and Fiat TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As the Roman Empire shattered and collapsed, the bishops were the people best equipped to catch the falling stones. In the West (that's us), they sought to stabilize society by weaving a structure of laws and courts to uphold the rights and dignity of married couples in a chaotic world. The bishops in the East had a different approach, even allowing the dissolution of marriages in certain cases. To an extent, the bishops took a measure of control away from the fathers of families in order to provide pastoral care for those who suffered most in the social collapse: women and children. In the West, much of the marriage law was contained in the "penitential books" the bishops devised to regulate the lives of public sinners. In the seventh century, Theodore of Canterbury's penitential book said that he had the power to give consent to remarriage in the case of a poor fellow whose wife had been carried off by the Vikings. If the Vikings subsequently brought her back, she could remarry, too! No bishop ever made peace with divorce, but there was never a time when the pastoral concern of the church was not struggling with how to care for people in unhappy situations. --Rev. Copyright (c) J. S.
