Welcome!
Welcome to SXSWedu!
SXSWedu supports innovation in learning via 21st Century content delivery and
best practices for education professionals. For our inaugural conference, it is fitting
that SXSWedu hosts the Texas Education Agency’s powerful new e-learning environment, Project Share.
At this year’s conference you’ll find a number of stimulating sessions and thoughtprovoking panels, as well as powerful spotlight speakers that provide an insightful
view of innovations in education.
As with all the events presented by South by Southwest —SXSW Music, SXSW
Film and SXSW Interactive— you’ll also be provided fun and exciting opportunities
to socialize with your colleagues, discuss best practices, and envision still more
innovative solutions and the promising future that lies ahead.
We encourage you to participate fully, learn greatly, and enjoy yourself immensely.
Please make plans to join us again next year, for SXSWedu 2012, March 6–8, in

Connected Students, Connected Teachers
Please join Commissioner of Education Robert Scott for remarks regarding today’s connected, tech-savvy students and the imperative for a similarly engaged
community of Texas educators. In order to teach our students, we first have to
reach them: understanding and applying the approaches and tools our students
use daily, is central to creating a rich learning environment that both stimulates
and engages.

Agency, which oversees the state’s 1,200 school districts and charter schools. Mr. Scott has long been considered one of the most thoughtful and innovative education policy experts in state government. A graduate
of the University of Texas School of Law and a member of the State Bar of Texas, Mr. Scott provides strategic
leadership to the Texas Education Agency. Mr. Scott is the proud father of two teenagers, Katie and Jonathon,

University of Texas & Harvard Research: Learning
with Simulations and Games
Organizer: Priya Nihalani, University of Texas
Time: 4:30pm | TUE | Rm 108
This session presents current research conducted
by University Fellows at the University of Texas and
Harvard University. At the University of Texas we
investigated relationships between collaboration
and problem-solving in the context of a computer
networking simulation and simulation-based game.
Findings identified limitations of common assumptions about the effectiveness of working in groups
while using interactive technologies. At Harvard we
developed and tested a 75-minute computer game
that is a performance assessment of middle school
students’ scientific inquiry skills. Led by pioneer
Dr. Chris Dede, we found that games can be designed to assess higher-order thinking and procedural knowledge.

skills. All we need is teachers willing to demonstrate
how to use social media tools to connect students to
a community of experts. The panel will demonstrate
how to use social technologies to create networks of
experts capable of guiding student learning and how
to incorporate these personal learning networks into
everyday pedagogical practice.

What’s
Next?
What‘s the
future
hold for
SXSWedu?
We imagine – like other SXSW festivals – SXSWedu will provide a convergence
of the wide variety of education stakeholders, from K–12 teachers and
administrators, to higher education, policy experts, representatives from nonprofits, associations, business, media, the creative arts, and on and on. The topics
are broader than education, they’re about life long learning...and they are bigger
than Texas, they’re national, and even international, topics for inquiry and
discourse. Join in the conversation at SXSWedu.
Join us again next year,
for SXSWedu 2012
March 6–8 in Austin, Texas!
