Executive Message
We had an exceptional year in 2014, and believe this year’s annual marketing report will serve as a great blueprint
reflecting how we got there. As we all know, the Myrtle Beach area thrives because of a vibrant economy centered
on our 16.1 million annual visitors and $8 billion tourism industry. True, it is our world-class attractions and
beautiful beaches that bring tourists here for the first time. However, it is the friendly faces and warm, southern
hospitality they experience from our year-round residents that keep them coming back.
As a compliment to our destination promotion efforts, we thank our visitors for helping us spread our message and
their experiences via social channels like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. The more than 1.5 million fans
who have “liked” our official Visit Myrtle Beach Facebook page are always happy to share a family photo or video,
or a special memory from their time along our shores.
Still, at the end of the day, all of us in the Myrtle Beach area are our own best marketing tool. As we roll out the
welcome mat for 2015 visitors, we must remember to be ambassadors of our beach destination. That means taking
time to greet our guests, share some local knowledge and recommendations with them, and let them know we
appreciate their visit to our community.
Thank you for all you do to make marketing this wonderful destination such important and rewarding work.
Sincerely,
Brad Dean
President and CEO, MBACC/CVB

Importance of Tourism
Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries, employing millions worldwide.
The United States Travel Association estimates domestic and international leisure
and business travelers generated $2.1 trillion in economic impact in 2013, with
$888 billion spent directly by domestic and international travelers. This created an
additional $1.2 trillion in other industries and more than 14.9 million jobs.
Tourism, the largest industry in South Carolina, has long been a major driver of
quality of life and opportunity. A study prepared for the South Carolina Parks,
Recreation, and Tourism (SCPRT) agency by the United States Travel Association
revealed that domestic travel accounted for a direct economic impact of $11.5 billion
in 2013 and created 114,000 jobs.
How does tourism benefit
the Grand Strand?
TRAVEL
Direct spending by resident and
international travelers in the U.S.
averaged
:
$2.4 billion a day
$101.4 million an hour
$1.7 million a minute
$28,154 a second
Tourism delivers a $6.3 billion direct economic impact, with the indirect economic
impact adding another $1.8 billion and 73,500 jobs throughout our local community.
That economic impact – totaling over $8 billion – is greater than the entire national
gross product of numerous nations.
Tourism impacts the community in other ways. It accounts for more than half of the
jobs along the Grand Strand. Those employees use their wages to purchase goods
and services, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, healthcare and entertainment. The money invested into our local economy by tourists circulates throughout our economy several times over, providing an on-going economic impact that
would disappear entirely without tourism.
Tourists also pay taxes. Transaction taxes collected from tourists include sales tax,
hospitality fees, fuel tax, accommodations tax and education tax.

Research & Statistics
Research is important for gathering information to help ensure we are effective and efficient with our resources. It requires time,
effort and investment. Since the MBACC/CVB has been tasked with growing new visitation to particularly the shoulder season,
conducting research plays a crucial role in the marketing decision process by obtaining data before the consumer visits in the
Myrtle Beach area, during their stay, and after their visit is over.
