Rockliffe Hall hosts English Senior Open 2014
Rockliffe Hall, home to the prestigious English Senior Open, attracted some of the best
golfers from the European Senior Tour, including former Ryder Cup stars and international
players from over a dozen countries.
Visitor numbers reached an all-time high, with thousands of golf fans through the
gates over the three days, enjoying the luxury of the five-star resort as they witnessed
Argentina’s Cesar Monasterio claim the title.
Rockliffe Hall’s Davy Cuthbertson commented “Once again The Open was a
resounding success with fantastic feedback from all the players and enthusiastic
spectators, and we would like to take the opportunity to thank all the regional support of
fellow greenkeepers, groundsman and reps (including Lloyd Ltd’s very own Alistair Whitby,
now a Bunker Technician) who helped showcase the golf course in its pristine condition.”
Updating the fleet at Bishop Auckland Golf Club
Michael Grayson, Greens Chairman, and Phil Graham, Head Greenkeeper, explain the
reasoning behind the Club’s major purchases from Alistair Whitby at Lloyd Ltd Bishop
Auckland.
“Bishop Auckland Golf Club are happy to announce a step forward in their grounds
maintenance. The Club’s members will see five new pieces of machinery introduced to
replace the previous dated machines, some of which were 20 years old. Following a
detailed tendering and option appraisal process, Lloyd Ltd of Bishop Auckland were
selected as the Club’s preferred partner due to their competitive pricing and the excellent
working relationship the locally-based company has with the Club.

Lloyd Ltd
Three pieces of Toro equipment were selected on the basis that they have proven to
be robust and stood the test of time in the past, and also because they work well on the
Club’s terrain. The new Kubota tractor replaces the present 20-year-old tractor, which has
worked well for the Club. The Club’s green staff are delighted with the new machinery
and the equipment will mark the start of a ten-year plan to replace all greens machinery.
There are also, further exciting times later in the year at BAGC as the Club is planning to
upgrade one of its greens. These recent changes show the Club’s intent to make a positive
step forward to maintain its position as one of the top members’ Clubs in County Durham.”

Smoothing greens at Newbiggen Golf Club
Bringing Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club
up to speed
Newbiggen Golf Club in Northumberland is an 18-hole, par-72 (6,516 yard) private links
golf course established in 1884. Newbiggen is a very challenging 18-hole seaside links/
moorland course. It presents an interesting array of tight fairways, blind holes and very
true greens, all presented in excellent condition. If the wind decides to join in then it can
become even more interesting. Newbiggen’s Greenkeeper Ross is pictured here with the
Club’s new TORO 1240 GreensPro Turf Iron from Lloyd Ltd Newcastle.
Featuring 18 significant upgrades, the GreensPro 1240 delivers exceptionally smooth and
fast greens with a superior operator platform.
The split, contour-following smoothing rollers perfectly follow undulations, delivering
exceptionally smooth putting surfaces. The operator platform is fully adjustable for unmatched comfort and operator safety.
The new transport system featuring a QuickLatch coupler makes transporting from green
to green unbelievably quick and simple. Exceptional greens, rolling and ultimate usability
…that’s the TORO GreensPro 1240.
This James Braid-designed course, which stretches alongside Embleton Bay, is a true
links with many of the holes offering views of the imposing castle, beaches and there are
other quirks such as ‘pillboxes’ dotted around – small concrete guard posts constructed
during the Second World War. Dunstanburgh has around 300 members, who continue
to play very regularly throughout the Winter as the course is dry thanks to its sand base.
Stuart Imeson, Head Green Keeper, purchased a Toro 3400 Triflex Greensmower and a
Toro Turf Iron. The all new Greensmaster TriFlex mowers were designed to take precision
cutting to a completely new level. Adopting the proven Flex suspension, the cutting units float
freely over contours and undulations of the green, resulting in a superior quality of cut and
aftercut appearance. Improved serviceability is another major advantage of the new TriFlex
models. The tool-free, quick-change cutting units make servicing fast and easy and a
lift-gate footrest provides easy access to the centre cutting unit.

Cutting no corners at Stocksfield Golf Club
Stocksfield is an 18-hole, par-70 course based in the heart of the Tyne Valley,
Northumberland, approximately 45 miles from Carlisle and 15 from Newcastle
upon Tyne, offering a diverse test of golf with an interesting combination of
mature tree-lined fairways and open parkland.

TORO ProCore SR70 Turf Aerator.
• 185cm/73-inch aeration width.
• Up to 25.4cm/10-inch depth capacity.
• Dual-chain drive.
• Depth control from the tractor.
Improving the course at Hunley Hall Golf Club
Configured over 29 holes, Hunley Hall Golf Club’s four golf courses have been expertly
designed to complement each other perfectly, giving the enthusiastic golfer the chance
to play four different courses - Morgans, Imperial, Jubilee and Millennium - in just one
amazing location.
The compact, lightweight Toro ProCore SR70 can aerify to a depth of 25cm/10-inches,
leaving a smooth playing surface. The SR70 produces a “soft touch” and is the ideal
machine for aerifying at a deep level, quickly and efficiently.
Head Greenkeeper Greg Fitzmaurice commented on Hunley’s recent purchase from Lloyd
Ltd Bishop Auckland: “We had been looking for a way to carry out more aeration on the
course and the Toro ProCore SR70 from Lloyd Ltd gives us the perfect solution. The
speed of operation will allow us to aerate more areas of the course more often and will help
us to further improve the playing surfaces.”
Cutting the greens with versatility at
Cleveland Golf Club
Keeping maintenance simple at
Billingham Golf Club
Billingham is one of the North East’s most popular courses, with each hole having its own
special character. From the tree-lined fairways to meandering water, Billingham offers a
true test of your shotmaking skills.
David Coulson, Head Greenkeeper, explains why Billingham chose their new Toro:
“Toro manufactures very high-quality mowers that are well thought-out and designed,
simple to operate, a pleasure to use, safe, comfortable and reliable. I have been using Toro
now for over 25 years and can’t remember feeling let down or disappointed. The service and
back-up support from Lloyd Ltd Bishop Auckland I have found to be second-to-none.
Alistair has never let me down and works very hard to help in any way possible. I am still
very impressed with the amount of help I have received from him.
After a successful trial, I purchased a Toro Sidewinder on behalf of Billingham. The
mower is in a class of its own, very versatile, easy to set-up, service and operate. I was
impressed at the mowing performance: the machine has more than ample power and copes
extremely well at Billingham. We use it on tees, green surrounds and at times fairways.
Every golf course should have one.”

Staying top of the class at
Royal Grammar School
Cleveland Golf Club offers a Championship links course and is situated on the beautiful
North East coastline.
There has never been a greensmower with as much versatility as the new TORO Greensmaster 3250-D. A large, 3-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 21Hp/15.7Kw diesel engine provides the
performance needed - precision-manufactured cutting units with minimal adjustments and
superior cutting performance.
Ian Penberton is pictured above and comments on his new purchase: “This is the ninth
Toro 3250 I have purchased, so it goes without saying that everyone at Cleveland thinks
it’s a great piece of equipment which suits us perfectly. The new 3250 is a little noisier than
the older version, but the quality of cut and the ride quality is great.”

The Toro Groundsmaster® 4500-D
The free-floating Contour™ Plus cutting decks follow the contour of the terrain for a championship quality of cut.
With a powerful 60Hp/44.7kW Kubota® engine and full-time 4-wheel-drive, tough jobs get done quickly.
The TORO Groundsmaster® 4500-D and 4700-D both feature a unique, parallel hydraulic traction system that assures
full-time, bi-directional 4-wheel-drive. Parallel hydraulic flow between front and rear wheels means that you will have
4-wheel-drive assistance in turns, enabling easier trimming around objects without tyre scuffing and dependable traction on
hills and wet terrain. Rear rollers provide an attractive striping effect while you mow, greatly enhancing the finished look of
your turf.
The Contour™ Plus cutting technology takes quality of cut to a whole new level. Air inlet pockets keep the grass standing
tall for the cleanest possible cut and a modified rear discharge opening disperses clippings more evenly. An optional mulching
kit and optional high height of cut blade are also available. Proven rugged frame, drivetrain and components ensure durability
and long life. Heavy-duty welded steel decks and frames provide extra durability and long life.
Transforming the rough at Blackwell Golf Club
Impressing the members at
Durham City Golf Club
Blackwell is a traditional English mature parkland course measuring 6283 yards from
the white tees with a par of 70 (sss. 71). The Club has hosted the Open Championship
Regional Qualifying Event and was home to the Midland Boys’ Championship for many
years. Blackwell is ranked in Golf World’s Top 100 Courses.
The TORO Groundsmaster 4500-D has five free-floating Contour Plus rotary cutting
decks that follow the contour of your turf for a premier quality of cut. With a 60Hp/44.7Kw
Kubota turbo-diesel engine, the 4500-D is the most powerful mower in its class. The
Contour Plus cutting technology takes quality of cut to a whole new level. Air inlet pockets
keep the grass standing tall for the cleanest possible cut and a modified rear discharge
opening disperses clippings more evenly. An optional mulching kit and high cut height
blade are also available.
Richard Pybus of Blackwell Golf Club explains the benefits to the Club of their new
machine. “After purchasing the TORO Groundsmaster 4500 this year there has been a
huge improvement in the after-cut finish to the rough at Blackwell. No more tyre marks and
a lasting quality cut. After using gangs for the last 20 years, those days are finally gone
NO MORE ADJUSTING!”
Durham City Golf Club is located in the village of Langley Moor just off the A690, two miles
south west of the ancient city centre of Durham and is one of England’s oldest inland
clubs, having been inaugurated in the historic cathedral city in 1887. It is a traditional golf
club with modern standards and offers a challenge for golfers of all abilities - the subtly
sloped greens and gentle terrain make it a testing but always enjoyable challenge.
The TORO Reelmaster 5510 is designed to deliver the performance you’ve come to expect
from TORO. The machine comes with the larger 178mm/7-inch diameter cutting units
for heavy mowing conditions where extra capacity is needed. Its light weight is due to
optimizing the design to reduce weight without giving up performance and durability.
Available in standard 2-wheel-drive - or add on the CrossTrax all-wheel-drive system.
Based on TORO’s patented series/parallel 3-wheel-drive kit, the CrossTrax system
automatically transfers power from the front tyres to the opposite rear tyres to minimize
spinouts and maximize traction on wet terrain. ROPS and seatbelt are included for extra
operator safety.
Head Green Keeper Stan Shotton is delighted with the Club’s new purchase from Lloyd
Ltd Bishop Auckland, and commented: “The Toro Reelmaster 5510 fairway mower has
transformed our fairways - the quality of cut is great and has gone down very well with the
members. The staff think that the user-friendly controls are great.”
Cutting the course at
The Northumberland
Golf Club

bunkering and racecourse setting, Northumberland Golf
Club has played host to the Dunlop Masters and the
English Amateur Championship. The Club recently

Groundsmaster. Course Manager Paul O’Connor is
pictured here with the new machines from Lloyd Ltd
Newcastle.
The Reelmaster 5610 is designed to deliver the
performance you’ve come to expect from Toro. Built
to handle the heavy work-load pass-after-pass and
year-after-year, the 44.2 Hp/33kW turbo engine provides
the muscle to get the job done with power to spare. The
5610 comes standard with the larger 178mm/7-inch

AMAZONE Profihopper Mower/Scarifier
The self-propelled Profihopper for mowing and scarifying is equipped with 1.25m rotor which is attached as a
mowing scarifying unit at the front of the machine. Thanks to its unique collecting and compacting system the
profihopper is superbly suitable for the dust-free collection of grass and the debris from scarifying in one pass in
nearly all mowing conditions. Contrary to other machines wet grass does not stop the profihopper.
In one process the material is cut, collected and transported to the hopper, compressed by
the auger’s action.

The Profihopper does a superb job in nearly all conditions. Its well-proven
AMAZONE mowing and scarifying system guarantees well-groomed lawns.
Whether the sun is shining or the early morning dew is still on the grass – work
can begin.
The Profihopper is not bothered whether the grass is wet, exceptionally tall or
even thick – it always achieves first-class results.
Keeping the pitch perfect at Middlesbrough Football Club
When it opened its doors for the start of the
1995-96 season, Middlesbrough Football Club’s
new venue was the biggest new football stadium to
be built since the war and the first stadium in the
country to be built in line with the Taylor Report.
The Allett Buffalo mower is the great all-rounder in
the Allett line-up, capable of producing a first-class
finish across a wide range of grass types and
mowing conditions, even in the wet. Choose
the Buffalo 20, 24 or 27 for regular mowing of
ornamental grass in public and private parks and
gardens. Combining a wide cut with low weight, the
Buffalo 34 is ideal for maintaining larger, sensitive
areas such as sports grounds and prestige lawns.
Middlesbrough’s Head Groundsman, Tony Bell
comments:
“We have run with Allett mowers for 15 years and
have been very impressed with the fine finish and
reliability. We have a fleet of Allett machines that cut
the pitch by hand in 90 minutes.
The back-up and service from Alistair and the Lloyd
team continues to be very good.”

The GREAT DANE Scamper Hydro Walk-Behind Mower.
Designed with operator comfort in mind, this walk-behind commercial lawn mower has patented drive
levers that allow for easy one-handed trimming. Available with 15, 17 or 19Hp engines and 91cm/36-inch,
122cm/48-inch or 130cm/52-inch cutting decks, the short overall length of this mower is perfect for
manoeuvring between trees and loading on trailers.
The Scamper Hydro comes complete with dual 10cc hydraulic pumps and motors.
The low centre of gravity means that it is very stable to use and can climb kerbs with ease.
Double wheel kits allow for steep bank work. If you can walk it, it will cut it.
Every Great Dane mower can be supplied with a rear discharge option, avoiding grass-covered paths and
roadways.
Tailoring their services at Sustain Landscapes
Sustain Landscapes Ltd has extensive experience in grounds maintenance, offering a
tailored service to suit the requirements of each client.
Their grounds maintenance services cover schools and colleges, commercial properties,
parish councils, industrial estates, business parks, supermarkets, housing associations,
hotels, care homes and sports clubs.
Services offered by Sustain include grass cutting, weeding, tree maintenance and crown
lifting, natural turf sports field maintenance and marking out, synthetic sports pitch
maintenance, road sweeping, snow clearing and gritting.
So impressed were Sustain with their present GREAT DANE Scamper walk-behind
mower that they have just purchased another one from Andrew Hutchinson at Lloyd Ltd
Newcastle.
Designed with operator comfort in mind, this walk-behind commercial lawn mower has
patented low-vibration loop-handle drive levers that allow for easy one-handed trimming.
Zero to speed up the job for John Bell.
The Great Dane Chariot and Chariot LX range of ride-on mowers offers cutting widths from
122-183cm/48- to 72-inches and a low centre of gravity to hug rolling terrain.
They come in a range of engine options from 17 to 28Hp and like all Great Dane mowers
can be converted to run on Calor LPG for increased economy and clean-burning.
The cutting height can be easily adjusted from 6-127mm/½-5-inches without any tools
and the cutters “float” to provide a manicured look with less scalping.
John Bell commented on his recent purchase from Lloyd Ltd Bishop Auckland:
“I picked up my Great Dane zero-turn mower today. I found the staff at Lloyd Ltd very
helpful, giving me advice about the machine.
We are a Durham-based garden maintenance business, established for ten years and we
are expanding our commercial mowing side, hence the need for the zero-turn machine.”
Marc Kerr adds another peace of equipment to his growing fine turf maintenance fleet.
The Graden Contour Sand Injection machine
is a scarifier/aerator with the ability to scarify
to any depth from 1-40mm/1/32-11/2-inches,
whilst simultaneously backfilling the grooves
with either sand or a combination of sand and
seed.
Independent STRI trials have shown that this
is the most effective machine for removing
thatch - which is one of the biggest problems
for greenkeepers all over the world.
The Graden Contour Sand Injection grooves are
immediately filled right to the surface.
This means that the surface never loses
its firmness, there is no collapse of the
grooves, and disruption to play is kept to an
absolute minimum. Greens are back in play
within an hour and surface disruption is
minimal.
Marc Kerr says his second Graden machine
was purchased so his team can complete a
golf course in only one day.

Kubota G23 Professional ride-on mower
Boasting a 20.5 litre fuel tank, the Kubota G23 professional ride-on mower has a 23.3Hp
3-cylinder ETVCS water-cooled diesel engine, offering exceptional power and efficiency for
day-long mowing operations.
Its 48-inch cutting width and the 150mm maximum lift height gives excellent ground
clearance for climbing obstacles such as curbs while standard features include easy-to-use
HST transmission, a top speed of 17kph, as well as full hydrostatic power steering, thus
reducing operator fatigue.
The G23 is also equipped with differential lock, cruise control and a heavy-duty front axle.
Maintaining mature parkland
at Aske Hall and Estate
Aske Hall and Estate are currently owned by the 4th Marquess of
Zetland. Situated north of Richmond in parkland accredited to
Capability Brown, Aske Hall is a Georgian country house and is part of the
Zetland Estates, which own and manage a large number of charming
properties throughout the North which are available to rent from time
to time.
Kubota G23 high-dump, high-performance ride-on lawnmower
Enhanced with power, precision and agility, the tough G-Series puts
professional results within easy reach.
Precision engineering is what makes the G-series a cut above. Instead of
utilising belts, twin blades are powered in sync by a durable and
precise gear drive system. This allows the path of the blades
to overlap without the risk of clashing. With closer-positioned
blades, you get a cleaner, closer cut the first time, every time. The
mower deck can be lifted up to 150mm/6-inches, giving you the
freedom to move from job to job and ride over curbs. A simple twist
of the dial is all that’s required to adjust the mowing height to your
desired cutting level. The dial allows you to make adjustments at 6mm/
¼-inch intervals for precise results.
Gary Shaw, Estate Manager comments: “Zetland Estates has returned to
Lloyd Ltd to purchase new machinery as their knowledge, product range
and customer service levels are second to none. The Bishop Auckland
branch are always extremely helpful, efficient and pro-active, providing
wonderful back-up to their impressive fleet of products.”

standard in professional out-front rotary ride-on mowers.
Pictured here with their new Kubota F3680 is Head Greenkeeper Paul
Upton. Paul commented:
“The Kubota has been purchased to be used all over the course from
the rough to the finer areas.”
Preparing for any weather at World Heritage Site,
Fountains Abbey.
From humble beginnings the magnificent Fountains Abbey was established by
devout monks seeking a simpler existence. Green lawns stretch down to the riverside,
where paths lead to the deer park, home to Red, Fallow and Sika deer and ancient
trees - limes, oaks, and sweet chestnuts.
Michael Ridsdale, Grounds Manager at the Abbey explains why he chose Lloyd Ltd
for his new equipment: “Like all managers of landscapes we are always looking for
a quality finish coupled with reliability supported by quality service. Dealing with
Lloyd Ltd has been and remains a pleasure, providing us with first-class service and
technical support.
Working conditions are never the same from one year to the next and we have all
experienced the extremes of the British weather recently. Second guessing what’s
around the corner calls for a greater degree of foresight when spending your
hard-earned cash. The recent purchases that have centred around Kubota give us a
greater range of cutting options to suit all weathers whilst giving us that added extra
during the non-cutting part of the season when we are as active on Autumn and Winter
work.”

SP-575 Utility Spreader and

AMAZONE E+S Single Disc
Spreader
One of the most popular SnowEx spreaders, the
SP-575 remains a firm favourite with contractors
for its simple, reliable and efficient performance.
The patented SnowEx vibrator keeps material
flowing freely, while a powerful drive auger feeds
spread material directly to the spinner, ensuring
jams and blockages are kept to a minimum. The
in-cab dual controller makes life easy for the
user by allowing accurate control of spread
width and spinner speed. Complete with a trailed
mount this spreader is ideal for any ATV, UTV or
compact tractor.
The E+S single disc spreader can easily
handle Winter application of salt and grit on
roads and pathways.
Fertilising and the application of sand on golf
courses and sports fields and for spreading grit
in road construction are also easily achieved.
The special hopper design provides a good flow
of the spreading material at a low filling height.
The maximum hopper capacity is 1000 litres.
With extensions the E+S 300 can be increased
to max. 560 litres.
The E+S spreader is available with either
PTO shaft or hydraulic drive. The working
width can be set manually or hydraulically.
The E+S metering unit is simply removed
using the patented bolt-less fixing system.

or Facility Manager looking for a small capacity
spreader.
The M50 Pedestrian Drop Salt
Spreader is recommended for
