Reformation Service
Our Weekend Bible Class continues our study of the Savior’s life in “Christ of
the Gospels.” We have reached the half-way point of this study and will take
up this week the close of the Savior’s ministry in Judea and the account of
another miracle and the teaching of the unity of the Father and the Son in
one Godhead. Next week we start the last four months of the Savior’s time
on earth. This is a very good time to join us.
Wednesday Bible Study – A number of members and non-members have
indicated that Sunday evening would be easier to attend, so the class will
move from Wednesdays at 6:30pm to Sundays at 7:00pm starting in
November. Since November 1st also has a special Reformation service at
3:00pm, we will plan on starting the class November 8 th.
This is a good time to join us. The class is intended for non-members
to learn about the teachings at Messiah and for members to come and
review.
In His Word will be meeting once again this Tuesday, October 27th. In His
Word is a Bible Study geared towards college-age young adults that meets on
a weekly basis at various members' homes. Please consider joining your
fellow young adults this week at 3422 Stein Blvd, Apt 5. At 7:00 pm. We will
begin a study on the Sermon on the Mount. If you have any questions, call or
text Sam Rodebaugh at 414-534-7279.
The Ladies of Messiah meeting has been
rescheduled
– We plan to meet on Tuesday, November 3,
beginning
at
7:00 pm (the former date was this Wednesday, Oct. 28). We will hear Pastor
and Mrs. Schaller give a presentation on cultivating Christian relationships.
There will also be a brief business meeting, and time for fellowship and
refreshments. Ladies, please plan to attend!

Special Reformation Service – On Sunday, November 1
at 3:00 pm Messiah will have its annual worship
service commemorating the blessings we have
received through the Lutheran Reformation. We
plan to look at the impact of the Reformation on our worship life. Come and
praise the LORD for the great blessings we receive through Bible’s teaching of
salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, based on the truth of Scripture
alone!
Immanuel Dining/Volunteers: This year Immanuel has a new food service
manager with Melanie Sydow at the helm. Each day at www.ilc.edu one can
4
-4-
see by the Daily Bulletin that the students are receiving nutritious meals.
Melanie replaces Ethel Eder who retired this past year. The supper cook,
Kathy Sydow, will be retiring at the end of the current academic year. This
past summer the Facilities Manager, Paul Heinze, led a concerted effort by
several volunteers to replace the carpeting in the dining hall with some very
nice tile. This helped save Immanuel over $11,000. There was also another
significant upgrade by volunteers to the athletic fields with fencing and
dugouts. Others also provided electrical service to this area. Many other
things happen behind the scenes with countless volunteers. Such a
willingness to serve is a marvelous blessing to the Immanuel program!
The Gift of Life – Physical, Spiritual and Eternal
The LORD provided the great gift of physical life to Gideon Obadiah, born to
Dan Sullivan and his wife Amanda nee Stratton. The LORD of life added the
greater blessing of spiritual life through the gracious washing of Baptism.
Both births took place on October 16 at Luther Hospital. Pastor Tiefel served
and Christopher Stratton and Peggy Schiermeister (by Skype) willingly took
up the work of Christian sponsors. The baptism was also witnessed by both
sets of grandparents.
On Friday, October 23, Addison Marie Hemmingson received the
washing of regeneration in Holy Baptism at her home. Addison was born to
Tara (nee Hetke) and Brandon Hemmingson on August 7, 2015. Pastor
Naumann performed the ceremony.
May God in His mercy keep and preserve Gideon and Addison in the
Christian faith until each receives from Jesus the gift of eternal life.
That gift of eternal life was given by Jesus to Jim McDonald on
Wednesday October 21. Jim had been in and out of the hospital with various
physical ailments, and just this past weekend returned to Dove West and was
placed in hospice care. He was on regular visits from our pastors and
received his last devotion about 90 minutes before his death. The victory
service and committal for Jim will be in Oshkosh on Thursday, November 5, at
the Konrad Behlman Funeral Home, 100 Lakepoint Dr in Oshkosh. Family
visitation will start at noon, with the service beginning at 1 pm, and the
committal directly after the service (there will be no service here at Messiah).
We thank the LORD for His special care of Jim and for being faithful to His
promise to preserve him in midst of all kinds of trials and to destroy death
and its power.
The Savior promised “Because I live, you will live also.” We thank Him
for keeping this promise and now ask for the comfort of the Holy Spirit for
5
the members of Jim’s family.
He that believes and is baptized
Shall see the Lord’s salvation;
Baptized into the death of Christ,
He is a new creation.
Thro’ Christ’s redemption he shall stand
Among the glorious heav’nly band
Of ev’ry tribe and nation.
With one accord, O God, we pray;
Grant us Thy Holy Spirit;
Look Thou on our infirmity
Thro’ Jesus’ blood and merit.
Grant us to grow in grace each day
That by this Sacrament we may
Eternal life inherit. Amen.

Communion Next Weekend – Announcements may be made by speaking to
one of the pastors or by signing the registration sheets on the table in the
hallway. As an aid to proper self-examination, we offer the following.
The second benefit of Holy Communion is life — not the physical life we
received at birth and sustained by food and drink, but the new, spiritual life,
which begins in regeneration through Holy Baptism and consists in faith in
our Lord Jesus Christ and in the love of God and our neighbor. Since this new
life is as yet weak and imperfect and in need of constant growth, our Lord has
8
designated His Holy Supper as a spiritual nourishment for the strengthening
of this spiritual life. Of this Martin Luther writes: “Holy Communion is aptly
called a food for the soul, as it nourishes and strengthens the new man; there
are so many obstacles and temptations on the part of the devil, our old
nature in its flesh and blood, and the world that we often grow faint and
weary and at times even falter. So the Lord’s Supper is given for a daily food
and nourishment that faith may be refreshed and strengthened and not
repulsed in this battle, but ever grow stronger and stronger; for the new life
is of such a nature that it must constantly grow and progress. This new life
has a great deal to endure, since the devil is an enemy who has great wrath.
When he finds that he cannot take us by a bold stroke because we resist him,
he tries all his wiles, presents all his allurements, and does not desist until he
has tired us out, so that we either abandon our faith or become listless or
impatient. But when our heart is in this condition, being about to succumb,
we have the comfort that in this Sacrament it can be again strengthened and
refreshed.”

Daily Bible readings for home devotions, Oct. 26-31, ‘15
Mon Isaiah 53:10-12 Did O.T. people know about God’s redemption plan?
Yes, and Isaiah saw it as a finished product. But why would it please the LORD
to humiliate and torture Jesus? Because making satisfaction for sin is a
10
-9-
humili-ating and lethal business. Jesus willingly poured out His soul/life unto
death because our debt needed to be cleared before the bar of justice, and
Jesus was happy to do the job that had to get done; He earned our
redemption.
Tues Mark 10:35-45 James and John should have been ashamed of
themselves to ask for prestige in heaven when they had not yet faced fiery
trials on earth (37-39). The others should have been embarrassed, too, for
they were back-ward on religious ethics. God’s way is superior, for He
counteracts all human backwardness, and His is the only way to change
victims into victors (42-45).
Wed Hebrews 4:9-16 Since God follows the principle of working before
resting (9-10), we should be diligent in our labors, too, to avoid sins (11).
Further, God has put sharp, effective tools into our toolbox to work with—His
Word, which is sharp enough and sturdy enough to chisel through our stony
defenses and get to the heart of our every thought and motive (12). Besides,
since Jesus is in heaven as our best Friend, and since He once walked in our
shoes (14-15), we have God Himself in our corner (16). How blest we are!
Thurs Psalm 22 [Jesus is speaking through David] “Why am I forsaken by You,
My God (1-2) when You have helped others before Me (3-5)? Evidently
because I do not deserve compassion (6-8). You have been My God since My
conception (9-11), but now I’m under attack (12-13), really suffering (14-15),
and facing execution like a nobody, so please intervene for Me (16-20) . . . . .
I thank You for answering Me, for which I praise You publicly (21-26) so that
others will turn to You both now and in the distant future (29-31).
Fri John 17:1-5 Jesus had only one day left to work out our salvation when He
documented this last Will-and-Testament dedicated to His Father (1),
stipulating that His heirs should have equal shares in eternal life (2), based on
their acknowledgment of Trinity God (3). Jesus was “signing off” as He
completed His contract with the Father (4), and He was looking forward to
returning to His Father in glorious reunion (5). What a legacy!
Sat 2 Corinthians 5:21 echoes the theme of the Reformation, whereby God
re-publicized the gospel that Jesus is the all-sufficient Savior, for He alone was
qualified (as a sinless human) to live in/with/under the divine Law and fulfill all
its requirements. He became the sin-bearing Substitute for all sinners, so that we
might become heirs of His/God’s righteousness. Salvation comes by God’s grace
alone, is acquired by faith alone, and is based on Scripture alone.

The Twenty-second Weekend after Pentecost
Messiah Lutheran Church & School
Pre-service Devotion: John 17:13-20
(A portion of the prayer by Jesus)
13
But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may
have My joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; and the
world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of
the world. 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but
that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world,
just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is
truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the
world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified
by the truth. 20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who
will believe in Me through their word;
Hymn 767 “Church of God, Elect and Glorious”
From the tan Worship Supplement
Pastor: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
Pastor: We have come into the presence of God, Who created us to
love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him
and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess
our sins to Him and plead for His mercy.
People: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth.
In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be
called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy
12
-1-
on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and
take away my guilt.
Pastor: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the
perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has
removed your guilt forever. You are His own dear child. May God give
you strength to live according to His will.
People: Amen.

Pastor: Prayer of the Day
People: Amen.
The Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 53:10-12
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When
You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall
prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His
hand. 11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His
knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear
their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out
His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the
transgressors.
10
The New Testament Reading – Hebrews 4:9-16
There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who
has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did
from His. 11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone
fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of
God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword,
piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and
marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
13
And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are
naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
14
Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through
the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
15
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our
weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
16
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may
obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Pastor: Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it.
The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and
of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His
Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,
begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by Whom all
things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from
heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was
made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered
and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the
Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the
Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the
dead, Whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, Who proceeds
from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is
worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one
holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the
remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of
the world to come. Amen.

Messiah’s Children Sing: “Amazing Grace”
Hymn 777 From the tan Worship Supplement
(Sunday Only)
Hymn 452 “The Son of God Goes Forth to War”
From the red Lutheran Hymnal
The Sermon Text: Mark 10:35-45
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying,
“Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.” 36 And He said to
them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37 They said to Him,
“Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on
Your left, in Your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know
what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and be
baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” 39 They said to
Him, “We are able.” So Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink the
cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be
baptized; 40 but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to
give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared.” 41 And when the ten
heard it, they began to be greatly displeased with James and John.
42
But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that
those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them,
and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 Yet it shall not be
so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall
be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave
of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to
serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
35
Sermon Theme: The Christian copycats Christ
I. As Jesus suffered (the hatred of unbelief),
so we suffer (the hatred of unbelief).
II. As Jesus served (by dying for sinners),
so we serve (by spreading His Gospel).
