MAY 2013
Chamber Honors Local High School Seniors
By Dr. Charles Grant, President & CEO
T
he North Channel
Area Chamber of
Commerce is unique in
that there are three public
school districts in this
Chamber's boundaries.
Many chambers usually
have just have one ISD or
perhaps parts of one or
two because chambers and
school district boundaries
often overlap.
Our
chamber has a long tradition of supporting education. We take pride in our
public schools, private
schools, as well as our
institutions of higher
education.

the top five percent of the
2013 graduating class from
C. E. King High School,
Channelview High School,
Galena Park High School,
and North Shore Senior
High School were recognized and honored with a
luncheon in the Monument
Room at San Jacinto
College North. The Keynote Speaker was Amber
Williams, Principal of
Kashmere High School.
Ms. Williams graduated
number one in the class of
2000 from C. E. King High
School. She holds a Bachelors of Arts in English and a
Master Degree in Business
Administration from the
University of Houston. She
has also earned several
educational certifications
and plans to pursue a Ph.D.
in the near future. Ms.
Williams is the founder and
executive director of a
nonprofit organization and
is also the owner of Dardon Books, a publishing
company.
It takes a lot of planning
and coordination to have a
successful Senior Honors
Luncheon. The Chamber
staff would like to thank
members of the Education
Committee, Mark Kramer
with Channelview ISD,
Ashley Shibley with Sheldon
ISD, and Jonathan Frey with
Galena Park ISD for all
their efforts to make this
year's luncheon a huge
success! In addition, our
local school superintendents are great supporters
of the Chamber and they
deserve a much deserved
"thank you” as well. Pictured below (left to right)
are
Dr.
Vickey
Giles, Superintendent of
Sheldon ISD, Mr. Greg
Ollis, Superintendent of
Amber Williams
Channelview ISD, and Dr.
Angi Williams, Superintedent
of Galena Park ISD.
Last of all, this celebration would not have been
possible without the many
chamber
members
(individuals and companies)
who sponsored lunch for
one or more of the honor
students. To see a complete
list of the luncheon sponsors, please see page 4.
Thank you for your financial
support for our future
business and community
leaders.

PORT BRIEFS
‘Houston Retains Top Spot in Container Trade with Brazil’
F
rom 2010 to 2012, the
Port of Houston
Authority (PHA) handled a total
of 311,314 twenty-foot equivalent
units of trade with Brazil. In 2012,
PHA’s market share was 17
percent of the total trade with
Brazil, according to statistics
compiled from the Journal of
Commerce’s PIERS data.
Brazil is South America’s largest
economy and has shown potential
for further growth. Houston’s
trade with Brazil has increased
due to U.S. manufactured goods,
such as synthetic resins, being
exported out of Houston. Further
trade growth could be expected,
based on planned expansion
projects in Houston that will
increase eethylene production for
export.
Machine parts, motor cars,
plastic resins, coffee and granite are
among Brazil’s main imports and
exports with the Port of Houston
Authority.
In addition, Brazil is Texas’
fourth-largest export market. The
Port of Houston's economic
activity helps keep Texas the
nation's top exporting state. For
the past 11 years, Texas has
outpaced the rest of the nation in
exports. In 2012, Texas exports
totaled $265 billion, up by 5.4
percent from 2011, according to
annual trade data from the U.S.
Department of Commerce.
