ACHIEVEMENT
Congratulations to the Desert Vista community! We have earned a letter “A” grade from the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) this
past school year which signifies the continued growth of all our students in the areas identified by the ADE formula. This grade is a direct
result of the hard work, dedication and intentional teaching and learning performed by our teachers and students. Our AIMS scores for
the 2013 – 2014 school year are something to celebrate, as well. Once again we outperformed all other high schools in the state of Arizona. This is a direct result of students, parents and staff working together for the benefit of student learning and preparedness for College
and Career. Our partnership paid off with over 94% of our graduating seniors of 2014 going on to post-secondary learning institutions
and being accepted to over 280 national and international colleges and universities. Our graduating class of 2014 was offered over
$30.3 million dollars in scholarship opportunities. As we embark on our 19 th year as Desert Vista High School, we will continue to achieve
‘Excellence Through Performance’ due to the partnership we have with our families, outstanding students and the excellent teaching and
support staff. I look forward to a successful year!

STUDENT DROP-OFF AND PICK -UP
Our Security Staff has become concerned that procedures for picking up students are often being disregarded in the student parking lot at the end of the day. Security is looking out for the safety of your
children, and over the years has created a system for parents to pick up their student in an efficient
manner. It is not the perfect solution; however, the SAFETY of the children comes first! Trying to circumvent the system and avoiding Security directing traffic may result in an unfortunate accident. We want
to be proactive in preventing any such mishaps. We ask for your patience and respect for our Security
Staff as they are there for the safety of your children. Timing is everything, if you’re coming before or
when the bell rings at the end of the school day, you can expect delays. If you arrive 10 - 15 minutes
later your experience will be vastly different and move much quicker. From the time the bell rings at
3:12 PM until approximately 3:30 PM when the lot is almost empty is 16 minutes. Staggering your
pickup time will reduce everyone’s stress and risk of mishaps.

If you have textbooks that you no longer need because of schedule changes, please return them as soon as possible as we may

Senior Parents and Seniors: please remember that your student will not receive a diploma at graduation if they still have outstanding debt or books. Start early and keep up with this as the year progresses, so there are no surprises at the end of the

Only parents or legal guardians may call the attendance line. Please call the Attendance Line and choose
one of three options:
Option 1
If the student needs to leave campus early and receive an off campus pass, please leave the
following information: the student’s name and student ID number, spelling the last name
clearly; your name and relationship to the student; and the time and reason the student will
be leaving campus. It is imperative you state that the student is allowed to drive or walk off
campus, or who will be picking them up. Students are to sign out through the front office before leaving campus.
Option 2
To report an absence or late arrival for a freshman or sophomore student please leave the
following information: the student’s name and ID number, spelling the last name clearly; the
date(s) and reason for the absence; your name and relationship to the student; and a daytime
phone number.
Option 3
To report an absence or late arrival for a junior or senior student please leave the following
information: the student’s name and ID number, spelling the last name clearly; the date(s)
and reason for the absence; your name and relationship to the student; and a daytime phone
number.
If you have questions regarding an attendance matter press 0.
*Excessive absences, (11 or more) excused or unexcused, may result in a loss of credit per class, per
semester. Eleven absences in four or more classes may result in the student being withdrawn from school.
Desert Vista has implemented an automated calling system. If your child is marked absent in one or more
classes, you will receive an automated phone call. If your child was absent, please call the appropriate attendance line option. If you think your child was marked absent in error, please have the student check with
his/her teacher the following day.
Desert Vista is a closed campus. Do not call to request off campus passes for your children to leave for lunch.
Students will not be released during their lunch hour unless picked up by parents or legal guardians. Please
come in and sign the student out. Students are not to be picked up curbside.
Parents going out-of-town and leaving students in the care of a designated adult must provide the
attendance office with a notarized statement with the caretaker’s name and telephone numbers.
In our attempt to keep classroom interruptions to a minimum and student learning to
a maximum, instruction time will not be interrupted except in emergency situations.
The front office staff will not be able to hold, take or deliver student items. However,
we do understand that a student may forget some items, therefore a parent/
guardian may wait in the front office until passing period whereby the front office
staff will page the student. The parent will then be able to hand the items to his or
her child.

In order to meet our goals, we have modified our school cell phone usage policy. We must minimize
distractions if we are to maintain academic excellence. Cell phones will be prohibited during instruction time (unless directed by instructor) and “No Tech Zones”. No Tech Zones include all restrooms,
PE locker rooms, front office, and library (during instruction time). Phones may be used before
school, passing periods, during lunch, and after school only. Students caught using their phones
during those unauthorized periods and zones will result in the phone being confiscated by staff or
security personnel. Phones will be available for parent pickup afterschool. If students do not follow
school policies, they will be considered to be insubordinate and appropriate discipline will result.
Students are encouraged not to bring iPods, mp3 players, laser pointers, headsets, cameras or video
recorders, any game playing device, or any personal electronic or digital music devices on campus.
Lost or stolen cell phones or devices are the responsibility of the student. Bringing the item to school
is at the students’ own risk for loss/theft. Desert Vista is not responsible for stolen or missing equipment and it is strongly encouraged that they not be brought to campus.

NOTES FROM THE NURSE
As we approach the cooler months of flu season-remember that the seasonal flu and H1N1
vaccines are available at many local pharmacies, so you can immunize before it gets you and your
family down.
Also, it is important that you remember that you SHOULD NOT send your child to school with
temperature of 100.0 or higher. Keep your kids home when they are sick.
Please emphasize good hygiene. This means teaching them to cough/sneeze into their elbows, good
hand washing habits and keeping their hands away from their faces.
The school has hand sanitizer placed in many locations around the campus. If you would like to donate bottles of sanitizer (or boxes of tissues) for the school’s common areas or classrooms, please
send them in to school with your students.
We are grateful for all you do to help us keep Desert Vista a healthy campus!
If you have any questions please contact our school nurse, Jean Kennedy.

USE
Desert Vista has a new procedure to obtain an electronic elevator card for those students
who are on crutches or a wheelchair. Students needing to obtain a cardkey will do the
following:
 Obtain an elevator permission form by seeing the school nurse prior to your school
day beginning or by going to our desertvista.schoolfusion.us website, click on
“STUDENTS” at the top of the page, then scroll down to “NURSE”. When you get to
the nurse website, click on the ELEVATOR FORM, print it, complete the form with both
parent & student signatures and bring it with you to the nurse.
 Submit your doctor/trainer order information, with an estimated time of need for the
use of the elevator, to the nurse to support your need.
 Nurse will provide note to leave class few minutes early to get through halls, as well as
collect elevator form.
 Elevator card will be obtained from the book store, as a $25 lien will be placed on the
student’s account until the elevator card is returned.
 Because the elevator card is now electronic, it will be deactivated on the completion
date listed on student’s form.
 Should a student foresee needing an extension of time for his/her elevator card, a
student will provide that documentation to the school nurse prior to the deactivation
date listed on his/her original paperwork.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation & help keeping our students safe!

MCKINNEY-VENTO HOMELESS
INFORMATION
If due to loss of housing and/or economic hardship, you must live in a shelter, motel, vehicle or
campground, on the street, in abandoned buildings or trailers or other inadequate accommodations,
or doubled up with relatives or friends because you cannot find or afford housing, then according to
the McKinney-Vento Act, you may be considered homeless.
KNOW THE
NINE
RIGHTS
FOR
HOMELESS
Your children have the right to:

Go to school, no matter where you live or how long you have lived there. You must be given access to the same public education provided to other students.

Continue in the school they attended before becoming homeless or the school they last attended, if that is your choice and is feasible. The school district's local liaison for homeless education
must assist them, if needed, and offer them the right to appeal a decision regarding their choice of
school if it goes against their wishes.

Receive transportation to the school they attended before they became homeless or the school
they last attended, if they request such transportation.

Attend a school and participate in school programs with students who are not homeless. Students cannot be separated from the regular school program because they are homeless.

Enroll in school without giving a permanent address. Schools cannot require proof of residency
that might prevent or delay school enrollment.

Enroll and attend classes while the school arranges for the transfer of school and immunization
records or any other documents required for enrollment.

Enroll and attend classes in the school of their choice even while the school and you seek to
resolve a dispute over enrollment.

Receive the same special programs and services, if needed, as provided to all other children
served in these programs.

Receive transportation to school and to school programs.

Three water stations are available on campus for use in refilling water bottles. One is in the gym lobby, one is in front of the nurse’s office and there is one in the cafeteria. Remember, students can
bring water into our campus buildings. Fountain drinks, power drinks, coffee and anything other than
water are not allowed in the hallways, classrooms or library. While we want to be certain our students
increase their environmental sensitivity and remain hydrated, we also want to continue to be conscientious of the upkeep of our school. For more information on these water stations click on this link:

TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS/RECORDS
Seniors, in order to obtain an official transcript please go to www.parchment.com. Once you register,
you can then send your transcripts electronically wherever you need them to go. The parchment website also offers students college search information as well as an assessment of the student transcript
in relationship to the colleges they would like to attend. Students can also see how their changes of
admission could differ if they were to improve their GPA and/or SAT. All classes 9th thru 12th can
access a history of student grades through parent/vue and student/vue, if they need an unofficial transcript.
Please contact Mrs. Sheila Thomas at 480-706-7945 with any questions. The hours for the DV
Records Department are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

The Library will be open at 7:15 AM each day and close on regular school days at 4 pm.
The facility will close shortly after the final bell on early release days.
Usage during school hours will require a teacher-signed pass. No food or drink (with the exception of
water) is allowed in the Library or the computer labs. The Library will be open during lunch time for
students who need to work on school-related projects and assignments. Any other activities such as
playing games or socializing must take place in other designated areas on campus that remain open
during lunch time. We will continue to adhere to the fire code capacity, and as such, students will be
advised that if they are not doing school-related work and/or we are at or nearly over capacity, they
will be asked to leave the Library to make room for students who are waiting to enter to do school
work. We thank everyone for their continued support and understanding.
Please contact Ms. Tomika Bethea if there are any questions about these policies.

The English Department has over 20,000 copies of novels that students at every grade level
check out for reading and study during their novel units. English teachers bring their classes to
the Library to check novels in and out, resulting in automatic tracking of late or lost books, making
the whole process easier on the teachers! Students must return their previously-used novels in
order to get the next one. Please help your students remember to turn in their completed novels
so they can obtain the next one without delay. Additionally, lost books must be paid for in the
Bookstore before another may be checked out.

SCHOOL DANCES
We will be having three dances this year, Homecoming and
Prom. The administration
would like to share with parents and students some
guidelines for dances at the
school. Students must show a
current Desert Vista identification card to be permitted
into a dance. Students are not
allowed to leave and re-enter
a dance under any circumstances. Guests are permitted
with proper paperwork and
prior approval from the Activities Office—the administration
will post guest pass information three weeks prior to
each event. Guests must
have a guest pass and picture
identification card to enter
the dance. Guests cannot be
in Middle School/Junior High
School and must be under the
age of 21. Students are limited to one guest. Lighting in
the gym will include the security lights at both ends of the
gym regardless of the indirect
lighting provided by the DJ. No
suggestive or lewd dancing
will be allowed. We will not
allow behavior at dances that
should be embarrassing to
students and their families.
No lap dancing will be tolerated. Any students dancing
inappropriately will be asked
to leave and will be banned
from future dances. Purses,
bags, clothing and vehicles
can be searched for items you
may not bring into a
dance. Items such as drink
containers, water bottles, or
any item that may contain an
illegal substance will not be
allowed inside the gate. Students who arrive under the
influence will be referred to
the on-duty officer, parents
will be notified, and they will
be subject to a minimum tenday off-campus suspension.
They also may lose their privileges to attend future school
dances. We want school dances to be fun and memorable; a
positive experience for all students. Dances start at 7:30 pm
and end promptly at 10:30 pm.
If you are picking up your son or
daughter, please pick them up
at 10:30 pm.

April 25—Prom
Theme and Location to be

Student Exchange Opportunity, 2014 – 2015 School Year
"Bringing the World Together, One Friendship at a Time"
Do you want to experience a new culture? Make new friends? Get a new “brother” or “sister” and become
part of a second family? Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe are looking for at least 21 students to participate in
next year’s Tempe Sister Cities school-to-school exchange with Regensburg, Germany. You will host your
German brother or sister for two weeks when they visit Phoenix from approximately March 19, 2015 to April 4,
2015 (exact dates will be determined later). This will be reciprocated when we travel to Germany for a two
week home-hosted stay after school gets out on May 22, 2015 (again, exact dates will be determined later).
This is not a language based program (you do not need to speak German), but it is for well rounded, mature
teens who are willing to learn about another culture and to share their own. The cost of the trip will be
determined at a later date but it is historically about $2200 or less. Applications are available online. For
more information please contact Stephanie Smith, Desert Vista Math Department, at 480.706.7900 ext 1340
or email at [email protected] . More information can also be found on Ms. Smith’s school website at

SPIRITLINE
U P DA T E
This summer the DV Varsity and Junior Varsity Spiritline attended the UCA Cheer Camp at NAU at
the end of June. Both JV and Varsity won many awards at camp.
Just to name a few…
JV received 1st place in their Game Day Cheer and 3rd place Overall for all of their Game Day
Material and Extreme Routine. Three JV cheerleaders were named All American - Maddie Ballard, Sophia Pope, and Madison Smith.
Varsity received 1st place in their Extreme Routine and 2nd place in their Final Cheer evaluation.
All American Cheerleaders named were Alanna Gonzalez, Carlie Clayton, Noelanie Freitag, Kennedy Maling, Lauren Pavlina, Michelle Brooks, Jaydah Hinton and Savannah Six. MOST IMPORTANTLY…both teams were recognized with the "Leadership Award"… this is an award voted
on by all other teams at camp.
DV Spiritline will be hosting a Cheer Clinic on September 20, 2014. This is a fun event for school
age girls in our community to come out and learn fun cheer material (jumps, chants, cheers, and
dance) and then perform at our October 10th DV Varsity Football game.

GRAD NIGHT 2015
One of the annual activities that makes high school graduation an even more memorable, safe and entertaining event for our seniors is Grad Night.
What is Grad Night? It is an all-night celebration which begins immediately following
commencement when buses transport graduates to a safe and fun location for the allnight celebration. In recent years the event has been held at ULTRA STAR Multi Entertainment Center (www.ultrastarAKChin.com) in Maricopa.
Why is it important for you to get involved with Grad Night now? Fundraising is always a
challenge. We rely on businesses to provide sponsorships, gift certificates, prizes and
more. As we all know, these are challenging times for businesses and families in our
community. The sooner we have a team on board, and the sooner we know what level
of support we have from the friends and families of our graduates, the more flexibility
we’ll have in planning.
Please contact Maureen Delaney at [email protected] if you
have any questions.
Please consider helping with this important event. Let’s keep our Grads safe!

THOMAS LAMBKE
On September 25, I will be inducted into the Willowbrook High School's Alumni Hall of Fame in Villa
Park, Illinois! I was nominated by my old HS Guidance Counselor Ron Tyler, who happens to be the
father of one of our teachers, Chris Tyler! Mr. Tyler nominated me because of two books that I have
written about our son, Bryan, and Down syndrome!
The first - SPIRIT, COURAGE and RESOLVE ... a Special Olympics Athlete's Road to Gold, describes
my family's experiences because of Bryan's participation in Special Olympics and culminates
with our trip to Ireland for the 2003 S.O. Summer World Games and coming home with GOLD medals in Unified bowling! Bryan and I co-authored I JUST AM ... a Story of Down Syndrome Awareness
and Tolerance, a book written to explain more about Down syndrome and how Bryan feels about it!
We have used both books as teaching tools to educate others about Down syndrome through dozens of school and group speaking engagements. Both books have been sold in all fifty states and
seventeen different countries. I JUST AM has been translated into both Romanian and French! In
2007, Bryan was inducted into the city of Chandler Sports Hall of Fame and in 2009, both he and I
were honored and blessed to be invited to speak at the Down Syndrome World Congress back in
Dublin, Ireland!
My wife Karen, daughter Shauna and Bryan and I have participated in six Best Buddies Bike Challenges, five at the Hearst Castle and one in Hyannis Port, raising over $30,000 for the sister organization of Special Olympics and their work for individuals with intellectual disabilities. I am proud to
admit that my induction is clearly because of Bryan!
