All I can say at this writing is “That its Winter time In Maine” with the
hope that spring is near.
Planning for Statewide is in full swing. If you have any ideas give me a
call at the UBM 800 # 1-800-229-9826.
A legislative update should already have reached you.
It’s time to start thinking about State and County elections as they are
drawing near.
FYI--I will not be seeking re-election this term.
Ride Safe and Watch out for the other guy!

UBM TREASURER
Howdy Folks,
known.
Hope everyone has made it through the cold, snow, and now the almost
spring stuff that continues to plague us. It’s almost time and I can tell you
I for one am so ready to ride. As we gear up and dust off our rides please
remember that people haven’t dealt with us in a while so be super cautious,
not to mention the sand still on the road.
At this time I would like to say many thanks to those that are dealing with
the Helmet issue this state is facing once again. Remember these people
work hard for us and give up a lot of their time so that we can ride Helmet
free if we so choose. If you can be of help or are interested in learning the
ropes someone will always help you and provide guidance, just let it be
Stay safe everyone and always “Ride it like you STOLE it”

ubm EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
Okay it’s almost March and it’s snowing outside. I sit here at my desk
trying to think of something interesting to write about so that you have
something interesting to read. The UBM E-Board meeting tonight has
been cancelled on account of weather and my bike is torn down and all
the shiny parts are getting a powdercoat.
I have received e-mail updates on the latest helmet bill that is making
it’s way through our legislature and have retrieved the info for the
legislators I have to contact and will be writing those e-mails shortly as
I hope you all will be doing. You see, you can’t depend on me to write
those e-mails and I can’t depend on you to do it. So I will write mine and
hope that you write yours because I know one thing for sure, I want to
have a choice whether to wear a helmet or not.
I became a member of the MRF (Motorcycle Riders Foundation) who is one of our national MRO’s (Motorcycle
Rights Organization) which is what we are, and I did it to help fund the fight for our freedoms at the national level.
Did you know that in 1987 and again in 1997 there was a bill to ban the sale of “superbikes” and the MRF was on top
of that fight, and don’t think that your Harley or any bike for that matter is safe from some kind of bogus legislation
by someone who doesn’t even ride. There are quite a few articles in MRF’s newsletter written by their executive
officers and most in this months issue have a common theme and that theme is “UNITY” and “Strength in numbers”.
Everyone is talking about the fact that we can’t hold back the wolves alone. Their pack grows stronger as our
memberships decline. Their are more motorcyclists out there today than there were 30+ years ago and we need to find
a way to attract them into the fold.
We are a brotherhood and sisterhood of like minded people who love to ride! Period! Volunteer to help your county
on their next event. Do something you always count on someone else to do and see how good it makes you feel. This
is an election year and our president is stepping down and there are executive offices that need to be filled. Safety and
Education, and the Toy Run to name a couple.
Remember what I said earlier about the wolves (government)? Together we have a chance to live free but alone we
will surely be eaten alive. Anything you can do to help fight off the pack is appreciated. Let’s stand side by side in
this fight to ride free in Maine. I have a great personal satisfaction in knowing that I may have some impact on the
direction of our fight to ride free in the state of Maine. Ride with me brothers and sisters.
Respectfully,

LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS
Hi Folks,
It’s been a busy legislative season, and like you, I wanna “think spring”.
I’m looking forward to a great summer, but first and foremost there’s work to
be done. I see more and more interest in MMPAC and UBM as well and I’m
hoping as time goes by that will continue to increase. We do need folks to
step up and “help us, help you”. I am proud and honored to be serving you
and all Membership. I will continue, “on the right path” to bring all of our
members legislative information, on the local, national, and foreign fronts, as
it will eventually “trickle down” to the citizens of our Great State of Maine.
We are still fighting LD 66 “An Act to Require that Motorcyclists Wear Helmets”, and it’s far from over. No need
to panic though, as Eric Fuller, Sonny Bridges and I have a handle on what’s going on. I have been in contact with
Governor LePage’s Office, and I have it in writing, that he will NOT sign any helmet legislation that comes to his
desk. LD 66 received a final vote was 9(No), and 4(Yes) from the Highway Committee. So now it goes to the House
to be voted on.
In the beginning of January, I sent out from MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation), 10 tips on safer driving habits
for auto/truck drivers to watch for motorcyclists. Eric, Linda and myself went to the transportation meeting and
after mentioning the 10 tips, I received an e-mail from James Taylor, who sits on the Maine Transportation Safety
Committee. His was requesting a copy of these tips, as he wants to insert them in their tri-fold, {Maine Traffic Safety
Tips), or put a link to them.
It’s been 3 months since I took this position with UBM, and I’m here to tell you, I’m here for the duration, fighting
for your right to “choose”. The most positive thing I’m seeing is, we are getting back to basics, and “working
together” ....We must continue to act as ONE voice, and work together as “United Bikers Of Maine”.

UBM BIKER DOWN NEWS
As I write this letter I’m looking out the window at 12” of fresh snow. Which
tells me I possibly have a few weeks of snowmobiling to enjoy. On another note my
Road King is getting a face lift so I’m anxious to get that first ride in as well!
The Biker Down Committee hasn’t had any members requesting benefits so I’m
pleased to say we have nothing to report! Enjoy the next few weeks of winter and
we’ll see at the spring UBM Events.

UBM MEMBERSHIP
Hey Yall,
As with everyone else, I am looking forward for good weather and
getting back on the road.
We had the usual drop in membership during the winter months, but I
am looking forward to it to increase as the riding season progresses. Since
the legislature meets in the winter, I would think that membership would
increase in order to strengthen our numbers when it comes to fighting any
bills that adversely affect motorcycles. Also an increase in revenue provides
MMPAC with money to help in that area, since $1.00 of each membership
goes to the MMPAC.
It is getting about time to remove the covers of the bikes and start
getting them ready to ride; overall visual inspection, checking tire inflation
and condition, changing oil if needed, clutch and brake cable lubrication
etc… You also need to have the bike registered by March 31st.
The UBM riding schedule is posted on our web and printed in the newsletter, so be sure to check it out for some
great rides.
Be sure to take care in your first outing due to the road crud left by the snow removal; corners can be a tad slick
until they get the stuff cleaned up. Also, winter has taken a toll on the roads, a lot of them are pretty beat up and the
heave will make them worse.
Well, that’s it for country music report…
Y’all ride safe!

KNOX COUNTY
Greetings,
Knox County looking forward to spring and back on our rides. The coastal area got hit
pretty hard this winter and still another month to go. Our big ride this year will be the
annual Memorial ride for Fred Merritt. Several other rides are planned and in the UBM
Event listing. Watch out for the sand when you first get out!

UBM Newsletter
Hello brothers and sisters,
As i write this it is snowing for about the 4th day straight. With that said, its riding season once again. I’ve been dusting jenny off and getting some
new bling on her in preparation of a long riding season. I have several rides
i plan to go on not just in Kennebec but other counties. So you’ll see me
out and about on some of your rides with camera in hand.
Now allow me to take you on a ride. A ride that’s free and personal. It
starts with a winding road and the roll of the throttle. Wind in the hair and
mile markers passing by. You’ve dreamed of this day for days, weeks...
Maybe years. Having the freedom to make your choices and live this dream
we’ve all come to know and love. Hearing the pipes blast out your favorite
harmony, you can smell the fresh spring air and the occasional cow pasture.
Then you hear a siren and your getting pulled over by the police. You made
a personal choice to not wear your helmet because you thought it was your
freedom to do so. Only to find out that someone in Augusta, that has never
lived your dream, thinks your freedom shouldn’t be yours to decide.
We as Mainers, and Americans have many freedoms in the greatest country in the world. The freedom to vote.
The freedom of speech. The freedom of the open road enjoying things that many other countries we couldn’t even
fathom. One of those freedoms, here in Maine, is to choose to ride with or without a helmet, a freedom of choice
that each of us as of today, is under attack. We’ve all heard about “an act to require that motorcyclists wear helmets”
aka ld 66. We’ve seen it in the papers, on the tv, talked about at get togethers. Said “what are they thinking!?”. Well
what are “we” thinking. What are your thoughts on the matter, and heres the important part: the people you may or
may not have voted for....Do they know your thoughts. Have you as a Mainer, as a citizen, as an American, who was
born into this country of freedoms exercised your right to contact your representative and let them know your stance
on this personal freedom? I’m not here to tell you what you should say. How to feel or what to think. I know what I
thought, what i have to say and will continue to say....Will you?...We are united bikers of Maine because “united we
stand, divided we fall”....

and a CF ride barbecue details will be on our Facebook page for all those
interested. There are a lot of great events coming up we at Androscoggin

If you’re not aware, this is an election year and the organization is always looking for people to step up, get
involved, and run for office. Counties are always looking for area reps to help out with signing up new members as
well as helping with county activities.
We, as a county, want to get out and enjoy some of the other county rides this year. There’s talk about going to the
coast, maybe to Owls Head some Sunday. We’ll see. Looks like the events calendar has some great rides planned
from all counties. Remember you’re not the only one out on the road, they have to share the road with us and we
have to share the road with them.
Franklin County holds our monthly meetings the first Thursday of the month upstairs at the VFW hall in Jay at

Hi Everyone,
Hope you survived the winter all right. It wasn’t all that bad.
Well at the Feb. meeting and again in March and April meetings, Pat’s Pizza
at 6pm., we’ll be putting the finishing touches on our rides and events for
the coming season. So come on down and give us your thoughts and ideas.
Is there a new ride you’d like to do or a new event you’d like to see at the
rodeo games? Show up at Pat’s Pizza and let me and the rest of us know.
And for you early birds that like to push the riding season, keep a sharp eye
out for thatleft over winter sand.

LINCOLN COUNTY
Hi Folks;
It looks like winter is finally on it’s way out. I have seen skunks out and
about, and Lady Bugs in the house. Spring can’t be that far behind. Lincoln
County has been fairly quiet this winter. Gail and I helped Dee Dee at the
swap meet in Augusta, at the UBM table. It was good seeing so many folks
out and enjoying the nice day, even though it was cold.
Check the ride schedule for Lincoln County in the calendar of events
section of the newsletter. We have some pretty nice rides planed for this
coming season. I’m going to try to join some of the other counties on their
rides, and I hope to see some of you on the Lincoln County rides. I have
seen some die hard people out on the roads. It’s still bad out there, so if
you are out on 2 wheels, please be real careful, we don’t want to lose anyone. Sand, black ice, and auto’s are still a
problem. Let’s be safe.
Hope to see you road soon.

KENNEBEC COUNTY
Hello from Kennebec County,
I hope everyone has survived the winter, as I am sure you are all looking
forward to spring and a new riding season.
Jim Maloy and I spent some time at the State House last month following
the LD66 Helmet Bill. So far the bill has come out of the Transportation
Committee with a recommendation that it not pass, that is good news.
However, it still has to go to the floor for a vote. At this time I do not know
when that vote will be.
What can you do to help us stop this bill?
Write your Representatives and let them know that the law as it is established
presently requires all persons under the age of 18 years to wear a helmet and for a one year period for any rider
over 17 years of age who is just attaining a motorcycle endorsement on their driver’s license. This one year period
has been established as a sufficient time to attain the skills needed to safely ride a motorcycle and make decisions
regarding their personal safety. UBM’s position is that the current law does not need changing and that it is a personal
choice to wear a helmet or not. Please be courteous and respectful when contacting a Representative.
Our next Kennebec County event will be the St Paddy’s Day Jam on Saturday March 16th at the Winslow VFW.
Mark your riding calendar for Saturday May 4th 2013 for Jonathan’s Ride. More information will be provided at
the County meetings and information will be placed on the State UBM Website. Or contact Dave Merrill at 592-7878
FMI.
As always I want to encourage all UBM Members to attend the County Meetings on the 1st Tuesday of the month
and attend the State UBM meetings which are held on the 4th Wednesday of the month in Augusta.
Don’t forget to Support Our Troops and to Thank Them and all Veteran’s for their Service to our country and the
Freedom that we enjoy.
I hope to see you at the next meeting.

another season. Some may already be riding and others are
just waiting for the mud to go away and the sand to lessen on

Greetings from Penobscot County,
Hopefully everyone’s winter has gone well, just think spring should be just around
the corner.
Other than a makeup race on April 13th due to the BLIZZARD of 2013,our Belt
Sander racing is winding down. Thanks to all that participated and those of you that
was a spectator.
It’s time to think about getting those bikes out of storage and serviced up for the
upcoming riding season.
I would like to take a moment to say I myself ride WITHOUT a helmet and feel
very safe on our Maine roads. But unfortunately someone is trying to take that right
away once again. I won’t go into details but we as motorcycle riders need to band
together and fight for our rights. This could just be the beginning of a whole new set
of laws to come down on us.

Hi Everyone,
I think we are all getting a little cabin fever and are ready to get out there on
the roads for a ride. If you do get out for a ride on the few warm days we are
getting now and then be careful of the sand in the roads and the people who may
not expect to see motorcycles yet.
We had our Belt Sander Races on March 3rd and we raised $1,048 which was
donated to Maine Children’s Cancer Program. We had a good turnout. There
was plenty of food, fun and prizes.
Our next event will be The First Bike Show of the Year on April 27th at the
Topsham American Legion. Rain date will be April 28th. This is our annual
fundraiser for United Bikers of Maine. This year we will have a band called
Crossin Mason Dixon. They play Country Rock music. I’d like to invite everyone to come on down and join us.
June 15th will be Zane’s Ride. This year money raised will be donated to the Make A Wish Foundation.
I would like to invite all Sagadahoc members to our monthly meeting. The Sunday meeting will be held on the first
Sunday of each month at 1:00 pm at the Bath Elks Lodge on 9 Lambert Street in Bath, ME. For more information

WALDO COUNTY
Waldo County
It has been snowing all weekend so far. Its only 20 days until spring and I
am sure there are lots of us who are getting anxious. Although there has not
been any riding, there have been many opportunities for fellowship among
those who ride.
This is a new year not only because it is now 2013 but new as far as
legislation is concerned. Possibly over 1500 bills have been submitted.
Although many do not concern our community, there are bills that do. So far
there has been a helmet bill that has been under study for consideration. Early
word from MMPAC is that it was not recommended for passage. Until it hits
the floor for a full vote, it’s outcome is truly never certain. By the time this
newsletter is out we will most likely know the outcome.
We also received word that there is a bill being studied which if passed would bring E15 fuel to Maine in place
of the current E10. For most of us this would not be a good thing if it were to pass. Read up on it. Learn all you can
about it.
We need to make sure we come together and speak as one voice. If we come together as a mob, then that is how
we will be viewed. When we speak on an issue we need to make sure that we are fully informed on any subject we
want to be taken seriously about. One mis-statement will do more damage than ten accurate statements.
Slowly but surely the rights of all riders are being lost. Bit by bit, little by little they are going away. There are
those out there who wish to legislate common sense through passage of laws. Laws designed to protect us from
ourselves. Whether you choose to wear a helmet or not, it must remain just that, your choice. Think of the most
outlandish laws that could be brought forth and there are those who are not riders who truly believe it could be a
good idea. There was mention of wearing seatbelts on motorcycles. Obviously not by someone who has ever ridden
a motorcycle. One manufacture has put airbags on a bike. Think if that were the law of the land how it would affect
you.
If we do nothing, our apathy will take the past time and way of life as we know it, and make it unrecognizable.
Take the time to discuss the issues among yourselves. Make sure that they are brought up at every UBM county
meeting. Listen to MMPAC and the UBM legislative officers for effective ways to make sure we are heard. If we
all act as one we will be heard. If we act independently we run the risk of being disregarded as nothing more than an
irritation.
Want to get involved? Talk to your county director. Attend county UBM meetings. Attend MMPAC meetings. Take
the time to pay attention to the issues that affect us. Ask questions if you do not understand. NEVER BELIEVE
YOU CAN’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

was the biggest reason. At our February meeting Brian “Thumpa”Thorpe

Hi everyone, We would like to thank everyone who made our 2nd Annual Frostbite
Fever Party a great success. A big thank you to all who donated items and to those
who attended the party. We will be planning our upcoming rides and events for
this spring and summer. Our Christmas in July Toy Run will be July 20th, so stay
tuned for upcoming details on the ride. Our goal is to provide toys for the less
fortunate children of York county at Christmas time through toy donations and our
50/50 raffle. We donated the Walmart card money from the state toy run to a family
who was to the point of tears when they received it. They were surprised and very
thankful of our kindness, which made Christmas possible for the children. Ridin’
season is just a few turns of the throttle away and we are getting amped up for it. We are keeping our fingers crossed
on the helmet bill before the legislature and wish they would just leave us alone. Go Away ! I hope you have all
contacted your legislators about it, because the more opposition they see, the more they will understand where we
stand. Check in to our website, yorkcountyubm.com from time to time to find out what’s goin on. You can contact
any of the officers to get signed up or renew your membership to UBM. Thanks and hope to see ya’s all out ridin’ real

FUEL FOR YOUR TANK....
UBM members,
On Tuesday, February, 12 we attended the Public Hearing on LD 66 "An Act To
Require That Motorcyclists Wear Helmets". The Bill was sponsored by
Representative Paulette Beaudoin (D) Biddeford. Representative Beaudoin, who
sits on the Insurance Committee, was the sole sponsor.
On Tuesday, February 19 the Work Session was held. On a motion by
Representative Wayne Parry (R) Aurundal of “ought not to pass” discussion was
held on the motion. Very little discussion was forthcoming from the Committee
with the exception of Rep. Wayne Werts (D) Auburn. Rep. Werts is a retired
Auburn fire Chief and EMT. The votes in favor of helmets were cast by: Rep.
Werts, Rep. Christine Powers (D) Naples, and Rep. Andrew McLean (D) Gorham.
The original vote was 9-ought not to pass. 3- ought to pass and 1 not voting.
Senator Valentino voted in favor of helmets within the 48 hour deadline making
the vote 9 against helmets and 4 in favor.
What this split vote does is to send this Bill to both the House and Senate. This
is more common than not. In a perfect scenario, the Bill would be killed in
Committee and be dead, but all it takes is one vote to move it to the full House
and Senate.
According to the paper Rep. Beaudoin would appear to have admitted defeat. I am not sure if this
is because she knows the votes aren’t there or what.
NOW would be the time to contact your Legislators. A form letter, after the first one, is virtually
useless. If you are writing, a personal note will get you further than with a form letter. If you
have a chance to speak to your elected Legislators, that goes the furthest.
Do not refer to LD 66, but rather, “An Act To Require That Motorcyclists Wear Helmets”
Above all be polite.
Don’t panic. This fight is far from over on our side.

Maine Motorcycle Plates
Law Change effective 03/01/2012
As a result of a new Maine law, all motorcycle registrations, issued
on or after March 1, 2012, will expire on March 31st of the following
year.
•
Motorcycle registration stickers will include the month and year of
expiration and must be placed in the upper right corner of the plate.
Under the new law, Maine Inspection Stations are required to issue a
certificate of inspection and an official inspection sticker for each motorcycle.
•
The inspection sticker must be attached to the upper left corner of the
motorcycle registration plate.
•
The inspection certificate must be kept with the motorcycle registration
certificate.
•
If the registration plate is transferred to another motorcycle, the
inspection certificate and sticker expire.
The law did not change motorcycle registration fees. However, it did change
the method of calculating fees for motorcycles registered for the first time.
•
For new registrations only, the fees will be calculated based on the
number of months the registration is valid.

What A Great Partnership...
Your Business and UBM Members
Dear Business Owner, on behalf of United Bikers of Maine, Inc., I would like to thank you for your interest in
our Incentive & Discount Program. We appreciate your support of our organization and its members. The UBM
Incentive & Discount Program is designed to be of benefit to both, the members of the United Bikers of Maine
and the retailers who choose to participate. All current members of UBM are entitled to receive the discount or
incentive offered by the participating retailers. Although it is certainly to your discretion, most businesses offer a
10% discount average. The discount or incentive you offer need only be given to those individuals who show a
current membership card issued by the United Bikers of Maine, Inc. As a participating business you will receive a
certificate of involvement, a door sticker showing your participation, and a one year membership with UBM. This
membership will be issued in the business name and will include your name and co-owner if applicable, as the
business owner. Although we try to make the process as trouble free as possible, this membership will need to be
renewed annually by indicating to us that you wish to participate in this program again. You will be sent a renewal
letter approximately one month prior to your expiration date. As a thank you from us, your company name, address
and discount offer will be listed on the Incentive & Discount pages of our quarterly newsletter. We are happy to report that many businesses have reported an increase in sales as a result of joining this program. In order to participate in this program, please fill out the form below. Please be sure to include your business card as well.
