W. Yoder Auction Service Toy Sale
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
Auctioneer Wayne Yoder (center) and
crew with one of the pressed-steel toy
highlights: a 30” Keystone Water
Tower Fire Truck that later sold
for $350.
It took a $925 bid to
snag this rare, patented1926 Marx Hey Hey the
Chicken Snatcher toy.
Antique tin toy enthusiasts gathered in Wautoma,
Wisconsin on September 29th for a fantastic W.
Yoder Auction Service sale. More than one-thousand period toys sold in around four-hundred lots
- the great majority of them lithographed tin examples. You probably know Yoder Auction Service
for the big antique consignment auctions they’ve
become famous for, but they also conduct specialty auctions of all kinds - from firearms to occupational shaving mugs to this vintage toy auction.
There were countless highlights throughout the
day, including a classic Lehmann Velleda windup
toy car that fetched $1,100.

a solid $1,100.

Out & About
The leaves are gone and snow is around the corner.
For some making snowmen and snow angels is what they are
looking forward to, others see work and more challenges.
Don’t forget to check the snowblower before the snow and buy
the shovel before the first snow fall. Be courteous and check if
your elderly neighbors need help getting ready for the winter.

Be sure to note that photos are to follow and how many there are.
On a lighter note: the kids are having their first boy/girl Halloween party.
We started decorating the house this last weekend. So far, we have
managed to scare a few people when they drop off the kids and they open the
garage door to a life size scarecrow sitting in a chair. Brandon gets a huge
kick out of it, along with hiding and trying to scare the rest of us all the time.

Lithographed Tin Toys the Focus at
W. Yoder Auction in Wautoma, Wisconsin
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
It seems like just yesterday that they held their very first auction, but W. Yoder
Auction has now been serving Wisconsin’s and the Midwest’s auction needs for
more than a decade. Many of their sales are held at the Yoder Auction Center just
outside the central Wisconsin town of Wautoma, as this September 29th toy auction
was. And while there were some pressed steel and even celluloid toys scattered
around the room, the main focus of the sale was on period lithographed tin toys.
Popularly known as litho-tin, these toys are actually made of thin sheet steel that
has been tin-plated. The earliest types, made in the mid-19th century, were all painted by hand. That all changed a few decades later with the advent of offset lithography printing. A full-color image could now be quickly printed onto the still-flat sheet
with a lithograph press, after which the metal was formed into the desired shape and
assembled as a toy, often with a spring-wound mechanism inside.
German firms took the lead in the production of litho-tin toys, most notably the
company founded by Ernst Paul Lehmann in 1881. The tin toy-winner of the sale
was that previously-mentioned Lehmann Velleda car that brought $1,100. There
were many other Lehmann examples at the auction though, from a patented-1903 Li
La Hansom cab in nice condition that made $850, to an early Lehmann Matsuyama
Rickshaw toy right behind at $800.
The popularity of tin toys was two-fold. They were much cheaper to produce than
either wood or cast metal toys, and just as important in an increasingly international
toy market: lighter and thus cheaper to ship. Soon firms in both France and England
entered the market, and by the early 20th century companies in the United States as
Classic Mark litho-tin
Amos & Andy Taxi
Cab, with rough box
- $475.
well.
The most widely recognized of those American makers is Louis Marx and
Company. Founded in 1919 by New Yorkers Louis and David Marx, it quickly
became a major player in the toy market. Their first two toys were litho-tin: the
Alabama Coon Jigger and Zippo the Climbing Monkey. A rare 1926 Hey Hey the
Chicken Snatcher toy was the best of the Marx toys at this sale, bringing $925. Other
Marx highlights: a 1930s Popeye the Champ toy that brought $500, and a classic
Amos & Andy Taxi Cab complete with box that fetched $475.
And as it did in many arenas of manufacturing, Japan became a prominent maker
of lithographed tin toys after WWII. Many were now battery-operated instead of
being wound with a key. And although they’re not even half the age of those earlier
European tin toys, they are just as popular with collectors. A good example at this
sale was a Japanese Cragstan Toys NBC Television TV Truck. It was in great condition, and with a nice box too sold for a solid $700.
Auctioneer for the day was Wayne Yoder. W. Yoder Auction Service has been serving Wisconsin’s auction needs since 2003, conducting antique and specialty consignment auctions at their 8,000 square-foot facility in Wautoma, as well as numerous
on-site estate, real estate, and farm auctions throughout the year. Wayne said to
remind readers about their big vintage advertising sale - coming up on October 27th
right here at Yoder Auction Center in Wautoma. W. Yoder Auction Service can be
reached at 920-787-5549, or through their website www.wyoderauction.com. And as
always, keep an eye out for all of their upcoming auction listings in the Auction
Action Antique News!

This oversized facsimile edition of Frank Leslie's nineteenth century Civil War history is richly illustrated with 740 period engravings. The subjects illustrated include
portraits of political and military leaders, famous forts, pivotal battles and naval
engagements, military encampments, and major events arranged chronologically to
follow the course of the war. These images were created by a corps of war artists
employed by Frank Leslie for his illustrated newspapers. Years later these prints
from 1861 to 1865 were recovered and assembled in this volume. Along with the
fascinating illustrations and concise history is a range of official data taken from the
nation's war records, including the numbers for troops who entered the Union army
by state, the war's principle battles, their generals, and numbers killed and wounded. Indexes to Civil War history and this book's illustrations are included. This book
is a historical treasure for all who are fascinated with the Civil War.

Twenty-five Years Old, Four Hundred & Fifty Dealers Strong
- The Third Sunday Antiques Market in Bloomington, Illinois
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
At first glance, Bloomington, Illinois might not seem like the logical location for a
large and successful antiques show. If you take a second look though, it makes a lot
of sense. Bloomington, along with its sister city Normal, is the fastest growing metropolitan area in Illinois. The twin-cities have garnered numerous accolades in recent
years as well, such as Money Magazine’s “Best Places to Live” award, and were
somewhat surprisingly rated as one of the top-five places to play golf in the U.S. by
Golf Digest Magazine.
Located half-way between Chicago and St. Louis, Bloomington-Normal is located
within three-hundred miles of an amazing thirty-million people, and an hour’s drive
or less for nearly three-quarters of a million folks.
The show was founded by Bloomington natives Don and Carol Raycraft back in
1988. Their names may be familiar to you, since they’ve authored more than fifty
books on antiques and collectibles, ranging from Collecting Baseball Player
Autographs to the popular Raycraft’s Auction Field Guide, written by Don along
with his son R.C.
“I’ve never been an antiques dealer” Don told me, “but I’ve been collecting since I
was a boy. Back in 1988, we realized there was a need for an antiques show here in
central Illinois, and the Third Sunday Antiques Market was born. At that first show,
we were literally stunned to see 1,000 people lined up to get in, and the show’s been
growing ever since.” Don has largely handed over the reins of the show to son Mike,
whose public relations experience serves the event well. “With well over four-hundred dealers to choose from, shoppers are likely to find what they’re looking for,”
related Mike. “We try to always have a wide cross-section of dealers at each show,
ranging from high-end American furniture to vintage toys and sporting collectibles.
And it’s definitely not a flea market - with probably around 90% of the dealers sell-
Matched pair
of 1920’s

from Brass Hat Antiques $165 each. 765-404-1499
ing quality antiques and collectibles.”
The dealers come from more than a dozen states, some even as far as Canada.
“We’re very pleased with the dealers for 2012,” Mike said, “despite the economy, the
dealer count is up, and in fact there’s now a waiting list for indoor spaces.” Toy purveyor Brass Hat Antiques was one of those indoor vendors, bringing a wide variety
of period tin & iron toys and much more. My favorite there: a 1920s Marx wind-up
litho-tin coupe complete with box, asking price $575.
Michigan’s Time’s Past Antiques display was completely different – a wonderland
of vintage advertising of all sorts, including some choice light-up soft drink advertising clocks. They had the classic Pepsi-Cola and R C Cola clocks, plus rarities like
a Vess Billion Bubbles Beverages clock, price tag $525.
And country decorators couldn’t have been disappointed with what they found
here, from primitive furniture & accessories galore at both Country at Heart Antiques
and Bare Your Heart Antiques among many others.
As its name suggests, Third Sunday Antiques Market is held on the third Sunday of
each month, from May through November. Fifteen years ago, the event grew so large
it moved to the Interstate Center, a 120-acre facility right at the intersection of
Interstates I-39, I-55, and I-74. You can visit the hundred-plus outdoor vendors in the
morning, then if it gets a little warm (or cold); see 300 more inside the climate controlled main exhibition halls.
Be sure to check out their website too: www.thirdsundaymarket.com. There, you’ll
find directions to the facility, links to local lodging and dining, as well as dealer
information. If you missed this September 16th show, the one-day Third Sunday
Antiques Market will be back at the Interstate Center for a total of two more 2012
dates: October 21st, plus a brand-new November edition - happening this year on the
18th. And as always, keep an eye out for listings of the Third Sunday Antiques
Market in the Auction Action Antique News!

It is our pleasure to announce the publication & availability of our table top
book, Marble Mania. The original book published in July 1998 has been out of
print & unavailable for over a year.
The revised edition contains over 240 pages & close to 1,400 illustrations.
It has a hard cover with a dust jacket & like the original, covers all of the collectible
areas of the hobby of marbles.
The various sections include: Section 1: Marbles Other Than Glass; Section
2: Early Handmade Glass Marbles; Section 3: Machine Made Marbles; Section 4:
Contemporary Marbles; Section 5: Games & Toys; Section 6: Other Uses of
Marbles. Also included are a glossary of terms, a list of marble clubs, a bibliography, & an index. In addition, each of the photos has a valuation of the item pictured
as of the time the book was written & reviewed.
This book joins the seven other marble books the Society has done over the
years. The retail price for Marble Mania is $34.99 plus $6 shipping & handling.
It is also timely to note that Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. currently has the 5th
edition of Marbles: Identification & Price Guide, 5th edition which should be available later this year.
The Marble Collectors Society of America (MCSA) was founded in 1975
as a nonprofit organization established for charitable, scientific, literary & educational purposes. Society objectives include gathering & disseminating information
as well as performing services to further the hobby of marbles, marble collecting, &
the preservation of the history of marble s& marble making.
Some of the MCSA’s major accomplishments to date are the uninterrupted
issuance of the Society’s quarterly newsletter, Marble Mania, & accompanying
Calendar of Meets, shows & auctions; various surveys; photographing & publishing
color sheets; gathering & placing museum collections, in addition to those currently
housed at The Smithsonian Institute, The Corning Museum of Glass, & the Museum of
American Glass at WheatonArts; publication of price guides with periodic updates;
ongoing work towards establishing a library of articles & marble related material; preparation & publication of contributor listings; research & issuance of articles concerning
marble factories & contemporary marble makers; publication of books dedicated to the
hobby of marble collecting; classification & appraisal services.
Finally, MCSA has been an active & vital participant in the growth & visibility of the marble field throughout its 35 year history. The Society also recognizes
its obligations as the leading voice & reporting agency for the hobby, a task taken
very seriously.
