Einer der exzentrischsten Bildschöpfer der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte
Es ist nicht vielen Modefotografen vergönnt, Bilder zu schaffen, die in den
Mainstream der Popkultur eingehen. Doch genau das ist dem Norddeutschen
Horst Diekgerdes gelungen. Seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre fotografiert er für

ruft Christian Falsnaes (geb. 1980 in Kopenhagen, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin)
zu Beginn seiner fesselnden Performance Front. Der Bezug zum Publikum
bildet den Kern von Falsnaes’ künstlerischer Praxis. Seine Vorstellung von
Performance kreist um partizipative Aspekte, im Zuge derer Zuschauer und
Künstler gemeinsam ein Kunstwerk generieren. Falsnaes und die mitwirkenden
„Betrachter“ arbeiten mit unterschiedlichsten Medien, wie Malerei, Collage,

“I’m going to do this performance with all of you. Without you there would
be no performance …,”
shouts Christian Falsnaes (b. Copenhagen, 1980; lives and works in Berlin) at
the beginning of his engaging performance, Front. It is his relationship to the
audience that lies at the core of his artistic practice. Falsnaes’s idea of performance revolves around participatory pieces where the spectators and the artist
work in conjunction to produce an artwork. He and the various viewers who
have helped him work with diverse media, including painting, collage, installation, and video. At the core of this dynamic relationship—between the artist
and audience—are the rules, customs, and behavior that give rise to the result
of the interaction. Themes of authority, submission, and uniqueness underwrite the unforeseeable and uncontrollable nature of his performances. This
monograph documents these varied actions and outcomes as well as contains
short descriptions of the works from curators who were involved in them, including Carson Chan, Catharina Gebbers, and Jule Hilgärtner. Wie weit kann man mit einer Idee gehen?

verwerten Ersatzteile unserer Verbrauchskultur oder sind Maßanfertigungen,
die die materiellen Grenzen der modernen Industrie und unseres alltäglichen
Umfelds erkunden. „Trypophobia“ ist Holens erste Monografie. Eine sogenannte
SWOT-Analyse von Aedrhlsomrs Othryutupt Lauecehrofn, der Holens Stärken,
Schwächen, Chancen und ihm drohende Gefahren untersucht, bildet den

How Far Can You Take an Idea?
The Norwegian-German artist Yngve Holen (b. Braunschweig, 1982; lives
and works in Berlin) explores themes of transportation, technology, and the
human body. The resulting sculptures are unlike anything you have seen.
The initial impression of technological nihilism is deceptive; these works
visualize the tension between human immortality and individual vulnerability.
The series dating from between 2010 and 2015 were manufactured using
3D printers or high-pressure water jet cutters. They incorporate consumer
spare parts or were custom-made to probe the material limits that define
modern industry and our everyday surroundings. “Trypophobia” is Holen’s
first monograph. It opens with a so-called SWOT analysis of the artist by
Aedrhlsomrs Othryutupt Lauecehrofn that evaluates Holen’s strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and also contains contributions by
writers and artists: Thom Bettridge, Victoria Camblin, Karl Holmqvist, Pablo
Larios, S01E01, and Eric Schmid.

Ausbruch aus den Gemälden – Mark G
rotjahns Skulpturen
In einem radikalen Akt der Transformation macht Mark Grotjahn (geb. 1968
in Pasadena, lebt und arbeitet in Los Angeles) aus einem gewöhnlichen
Pappkarton ein edles Kunstwerk: eine Bronzeskulptur auf einem Sockel. Mit
groben Ausschnitten für Münder und Augen, angeklebten Papprollen als
Nasen und gerippten Kartonage-Oberflächen erinnern die Assemblagen an
primitive, kindliche Masken. Nachdem sie in Bronze gegossen wurden, bemalt Grotjahn sie in gestischer, expressiver Manier mit Schlieren aus bunter
Ölfarbe. Auf Podeste aus Kiefernholz gestellt, sind die Masken Gemälde und
dreidimensionale Objekte zugleich. Damit werden sie zu Hybriden, zu nie
dagewesenen Kreuzungen. Sie fügen der Genealogie der modernen Kunst
und insbesondere der gefassten Skulptur eine neue Facette hinzu und treten
in Dialog mit den modernistischen Konzepten des gefundenen Objekts, der
Assemblage und der geschweißten Skulptur sowie den Masken und Plastiken
der klassischen Moderne, die von nicht-westlicher Kunst inspiriert wurden.
Masks Bursting from the Flatness of Painting—Mark Grotjahn’s Sculptures
In a radical act of transformation, Mark Grotjahn (b. Pasadena, 1968; lives
and works in Los Angeles) turns an ordinary wobbly cardboard box into a
precious and solid work of art: a bronze sculpture on a pedestal. With rough
cutouts for mouths and eyes, cardboard rolls for noses, and corrugated
surfaces, the assemblages recall primitive infantile masks. Grotjahn casts
them in bronze and then paints them in a gestural expressive style with
streaks of bright oil paint. Set on pinewood bases, the masks are paintings
and three-dimensional objects at once: not just mere combinations of two
techniques but genuine hybrids, never-before-seen chimeras. They enrich
the genealogy of modern art, and of painted sculpture more particularly, with
a new facet, engaging the modernist ideas of found object, assemblage, and
welded sculpture in dialogue and harking back to the masks and sculptures
of classical modernism inspired by non-Western art.
Die Kunst der Gegenüberstellung
Stephan Balkenhol (geb. 1957 in Fritzlar, lebt und arbeitet in Karlsruhe,
Meisenthal/Lothringen, Kassel und Berlin) ist einer der bedeutendsten
zeitgenössischen deutschen Bildhauer. In der Tradition der Porträtbildhauerei
stehend, stellt er anonyme, vertraut wirkende Männer und Frauen aus Holz
dar. Jeff Wall (geb. 1946 in Vancouver, British Columbia, lebt und arbeitet in
Vancouver) gilt als eine der großen Führungsfiguren in der Gegenwartsfotografie. Berühmt wurde er mit großformatigen Diapositiven in Leuchtkästen.
Bereits 1988 verfasste Jeff Wall einen Text über Stephan Balkenhol, da er
von dessen Werken sehr fasziniert war. Nun sind beide Künstler erstmalig in
einer Ausstellung und in einem Buch vereint. Neben Walls Text und einem
Beitrag von Felix Krämer vom Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main führt der
Galerist Jörg Johnen, der beide vertritt, ein Gespräch mit den Künstlern.

The Art of Confrontation
Stephan Balkenhol (b. Fritzlar, Germany, 1957; lives and works in Karlsruhe,
Meisenthal/Lorraine, Kassel, and Berlin) is one of the most important German
sculptors working today. Working in the tradition of portrait sculpture, he
creates effigies of anonymous and yet strangely familiar men and women from
wood. The Canadian artist Jeff Wall (b. Vancouver, BC, 1946; lives and works
in Vancouver) is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading contemporary
photographers. He rose to fame with large-format transparencies mounted
on light boxes. Already in 1988 Jeff Wall wrote a text on Stephan Balkenhol’s
work, which he thought extraordinarily fascinating. Now both artists are united
for the first time in an exhibition and a book. In addition to Wall’s essay and a
contribution by Felix Krämer (Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main), the volume
includes a conversation between Jörg Johnen, who represents Wall and
Balkenhol, and the two artists.

He Xiangyu (geb. 1986 in Dandong, Provinz Liaoning, lebt und arbeitet in Peking
und Berlin) gehört zu einer neuen Generation von chinesischen Konzeptkünstlern, die verschiedene Medien einsetzen, um ihre kulturellen und sozialen
Anliegen zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Seine so ambitionierten wie provokativen
Arbeiten haben ihn schnell international bekannt gemacht. Für Cola Project,
2008 kochte er 127 Tonnen Coca-Cola ein Jahr lang ein, bis nur noch ein Berg
von kristalliner erdartiger Masse und eine schwarze Flüssigkeit übrig waren. Von
ähnlicher Dimension ist Tank Project (2011–2013), für das er einen Panzer aus
feinstem italienischen Leder von einem ganzen Nähereibetrieb in Originalgröße
herstellen ließ. Sein Interesse, das Wertesystem zu verdrehen, zeigt sich auch in
der Arbeit 4850g Gold, 62g Protein (2014/15), bestehend aus einem Eierkarton
aus massivem Gold und einem normalen Hühnerei. He Xiangyus erste Mono
grafie beinhaltet Texte von Bao Dong, Li Zhenhua, Lu Mingjun, Sun Dongdong
und Wang Min’an sowie ein Gespräch zwischen Li Zhenhua und dem Künstler.

“Nothing that isn’t allowed in China cannot be done …”
He Xiangyu (b. Dandong, Liaoning Province, 1986; lives and works in Beijing
and Berlin) belongs to a new generation of Chinese conceptual artists who
use a variety of media to articulate their cultural and social concerns. His
ambitious and provocative works have quickly brought him international
renown. In 2008, He Xiangyu launched his Cola Project, for which he boiled
down 127 tons of Coca-Cola over the course of a year to extract a crystalline
residue resembling soil and a black liquid. Tank Project (2011–2013) is of
similar gargantuan dimensions: the artist employed an entire sewing studio
to manufacture a full-size replica of a tank out of the finest Italian leather. He
Xiangyu’s interest in twisting the system of values is also evident in 4850g
Gold, 62g Protein (2014/15), which consists of an egg carton made of solid
gold and an ordinary chicken egg. He Xiangyu’s first monograph includes
essays by Bao Dong, Li Zhenhua, Lu Mingjun, Sun Dongdong, and Wang
Min’an as well as a conversation between Li Zhenhua and the artist.

Die Arbeiten von Chen Fei (geb. 1983 in Shanxi, China, lebt und arbeitet
in Peking) gehen in eine neue Richtung der zeitgenössischen chinesischen
Kunst, die sich erheblich von den Themen und der Ästhetik der Avantgarde-
Generation der 1980er und 1990er Jahre unterscheidet. Seine Bilder sind von
zahlreichen Filmen beeinflusst, die er seit seiner Kindheit gesehen hat – vom
Meisterwerk über den Kultfilm bis zum B-Movie. So begann er ein Studium an
der Beijing Film Academy und malte 202 Bösewichte mit ihren Kostümen und
Requisiten aus 197 Filmen. Von „A Clockwork Orange“ bis „Ichi the Killer“, von
„The Shining“ bis „Kill Bill“, von „Hard Candy“ bis „Chucky und seine Braut“.
Der gleiche schwarze Humor findet sich auch in Chen Feis neueren Gemälden
wieder. Unter seinem Pinsel werden Szenen über die menschliche Anatomie
oder den Tod zu harmlosen Witzen. Was ihn wirklich beeindruckt, sind die
Schurken, nicht die anständigen Leute, sagt Chen Fei. Das sei in der Malerei
das Gleiche, Schönheit und Gesundheit langweilten ihn nur.

The work of Chen Fei (b. Shanxi, China, 1983; lives and works in Beijing)
is part of a new trend in contemporary Chinese art that represents a clear
thematic as well as aesthetic departure from the avant-garde art of the
1980s and 1990s. His pictures evince the influence of the many m
ovies
he has seen since he was a child—masterworks and cult classics as well
as B movies. He actually enrolled at the Beijing Film Academy; a series
of paintings shows 202 villains, with their characteristic costumes and
accessories, from 197 movies ranging from “A Clockwork Orange” to “Ichi
the Killer,” from “The Shining” to “Kill Bill,” from “Hard Candy” to “Bride of
Chucky.” The same morbid sense of humor is evident in Chen’s more recent
paintings. His brush transmutes scenes of human anatomy or death into
harmless jokes. What truly impresses him, Chen Fei says, are the rogues,
not the upstanding citizens, and the same goes for painting: beauty and
good health leave him bored.
Zwischen Tradition und Subkultur – Neun Künstler in China
Neun Künstlerinnen und Künstler in Peking. Eine Fotografin aus Berlin. In
einem politisch nahezu totalitären System wie China kommt Künstlern eine
wegweisende Rolle zu. Die meisten entsagen Wohlstand und Sicherheit zu
Gunsten ihrer künstlerischen Passion. Armut und die Angst vor politischen
Repressionen lassen vielen Künstlern wenig Handlungsfreiheit. Diese
neun schaffen sich dennoch Raum für ihre individuelle Entfaltung zwischen
subjektiven, subkulturellen Idealen, chinesischen Traditionen und der turbo
kapitalistischen chinesischen Gegenwart. Die Fotografin Stefanie Schweiger
lebt seit 2012 in Peking. Nach vielen Reportagen für Die Zeit, das ZEITmagazin
und internationale Medien begann sie Anfang 2014 an ihrem eigenen Projekt
„Chicken are not naked“ zu arbeiten. Sie begleitet Künstlerinnen und Künstler
und nimmt auf persönliche Weise an ihrem Leben fotografisch teil. Dieses
Buch offenbart differenzierte Blickwinkel auf die vielseitige – im Westen noch

Between Tradition and Subculture—Nine Artists in China
Nine artists in Beijing. A photographer from Berlin. In a country ruled by a
virtually perfect totalitarian system, artists have an especially seminal role to
play. Most forsake material prosperity and security in pursuit of their artistic
passion. Poverty and the fear of political repression often closely circumscribe the ambit of their work. Yet these nine have managed to stake out
spaces in which they hatch individual creative projects between subjective
and subcultural ideals, Chinese traditions, and their country’s contemporary
turbo-capitalist development. The photographer Stefanie Schweiger has
lived in Beijing since 2012. After creating numerous reportages for Die Zeit,
ZEITmagazin, and other international media, she launched her own project
“Chicken are not naked” in early 2014. For over a year she has shadowed
artists to create an intimate photographic portrait of their lives. This book
evokes a nuanced panorama of China’s diverse arts scene apart from the
country’s “mainstream”—much of which is virtually unknown in the West.

Eloge auf Eros, Emanzipation und Ekstase
Der Schwarz-Weiß-Film „Deep Gold“ ist eine Hommage an eine Szene aus
Luis Buñuels surrealistischem Klassiker „L’Âge d’Or“, 1930. Julian Rosefeldt
(geb. 1965 in München, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) versetzt das Geschehen
in einen Nachtclub im Berlin der 1920er Jahre, in dessen großstädtischem
Umfeld verschiedene Welten zusammenwirken. Damit ist der Film eine
Erweiterung der schonungslosen filmischen Gesellschafts- und Religionskritik
des spanischen Surrealisten: die Herausforderung einer repressiven Sexual
moral, die Auflösung der gegebenen Geschlechterordnung und der Appell
an eine Emanzipation, die nie die Kraft der weiblichen Sexualität ausschließt.
Rosefeldt zieht Parallelen zwischen der wirtschaftlichen Situation der 1920er
Jahre und heute und hinterfragt die kulturellen Folgen der sexuellen Revolution.
Die filmischen Sprünge zwischen Zeiten und Räumen sagen immer auch etwas
über menschliche Befindlichkeiten aus. Das Buch mit Texten von Dorothée
Brill und Angela Stief dokumentiert den Film mit zahlreichen Filmstills.
An Encomium to Eros, Emancipation, and Ecstasy
The black-and-white film “Deep Gold” pays homage to a scene in Luis
Buñuel’s Surrealist classic “L’Âge d’Or,” 1930. Julian Rosefeldt (b. Munich,
1965; lives and works in Berlin) has transplanted the action to a nightclub in
1920s Berlin, a metropolitan setting in which different worlds interact. In that
sense, his film elaborates the Spanish filmmaker’s unsparing social critique:
the challenge to repressive sexual morals, the disintegration of the prevailing
order of the sexes, and the appeal to an emancipation that never represses
the power of female sexuality. Rosefeldt highlights parallels between the
economic climate of the 1920s and the current situation and scrutinizes
the cultural repercussions of the sexual revolution. Cutting back and forth
between different times and spaces, his film always also reveals something
about basic human sentiments. The book, which documents the film with
numerous still photographs, is rounded out by essays by Dorothée Brill and
Angela Stief.
„Malen muss wehtun.“
Eine stickende Nonne, eine junge Braut, ein von Blumen verdecktes Gesicht –
das sind nur einige Motive, die die deutsch-bulgarische Künstlerin Oda Jaune
(geb. 1979 in Sofia, lebt und arbeitet in Paris) in ihrer zweiten Monografie
präsentiert. Die zwischen 2013 und 2015 entstandenen Aquarelle beschäf
tigen sich mit der Idee der „sozialen Maske“ und stellen Figuren dar, die eine
persönliche Transformation durchlaufen. Das Werk der jungen Malerin, die
als Meisterschülerin bei Jörg Immendorff an der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie
studierte und später seine Frau wurde, hat in den letzten Jahren große Beachtung gefunden. In ihren Bildern vermischt sich die Vorstellung von Zärtlichkeit,
kindlicher Naivität und Gewalt auf eine surreale, manchmal groteske Weise.
Auch wenn sich die Darstellungen durch eine beinahe körperlich spürbare
Drastik auszeichnen, so liegt ihnen doch immer etwas Schönes und Sublimes
zugrunde. Ein Auszug aus Friedrich Nietzsches Text „Jenseits von Gut und
Böse“ bietet eine gekonnte Einleitung in Oda Jaunes faszinierendes Werk.

“Painting Needs to Hurt.”
A nun working on a piece of embroidery, a face obscured by flowers—
these are only some of the motifs the German-Bulgarian artist Oda Jaune
(b. Sofia, 1979; lives and works in Paris) presents in her second monograph.
The new watercolors, created between 2013 and 2015, explore the idea
of the “social mask” and depict characters going through a personal
transformation. The oeuvre of the young painter, who was Jörg Immendorff’s
master student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf and later his wife,
has drawn wide attention in recent years. Jaune blends ideas of tenderness,
childlike naïveté, and violence in surreal and sometimes grotesque paintings.
Despite the almost visceral intensity of the pictures, they always grow out
of a beautiful and sublime vision. An excerpt from Friedrich Nietzsche’s
book “Beyond Good and Evil” serves as an apt introduction to Jaune’s
fascinating art.

Seeing is a Living Thing
Can a still photograph embody living perception? Can it contain its
abundance? Can photography, which is not a time-based medium, render
ongoing flow? Can it do justice to his notion of an over-spilling world? To
these questions, photographer Janet Sternburg (b. Boston, 1943; lives
and works in Los Angeles and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico), a writer
and philosopher as well as a photographer, says yes. Her work proves
that photography can register the living perception that is our experience.
Working without any optical or digital manipulation, and using the simplest
of technical means–disposable and early iPhone cameras–she draws
together the manifold aspects of the world on a single plane, portraying a
vision of interpenetrating and layered time and space. “Overspilling World”
is Janet Sternburg’s first monograph. With texts by Sternburg, art historian
Pepe Karmel, photographer Catherine Opie, curator Alexandra von Stosch,

A Visual Universe Full of Magic and Mystery
In a revisionist reassessment of classic modernism, Matthias Bitzer
(b. Stuttgart, 1975; lives and works in Berlin) combines portraiture with
geometric construction, often drawing on the formal vocabulary, plots, and
intellectual history of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His work
in media such as painting, sculpture, drawing, collage, and site-specific
installation art speaks a characteristic symbolic language. Interweaving
the lives of prominent figures like Anita Berber, Jorge Luis Borges, Emily
Dickinson, Leopoldo Fregoli, Fernando Pessoa, and Arthur Schnitzler
with his own biographical experience and contemporary life, Bitzer creates
dense narrative fabrics that accommodate the viewer’s abstract-figurative
associations. The book documents the evolution of Bitzer’s conceptions
of time-space through four of his most representative solo exhibitions.

Zwischen organisch und architektonisch
Collagetechnik greift auf Vorhandenes zurück und setzt es neu zusammen,
ohne dabei an einen Stil oder ein Medium gebunden zu sein. Frauke Dannert
(geb. 1979 in Herdecke, lebt und arbeitet in Köln und Düsseldorf) hat sich
dieser Methode verschrieben. In zehn Jahren entwickelte sie einen beachtlichen
Formenschatz, den sie heute wahlweise für Arbeiten auf Papier, Wand
malereien, Projektionen, Film und Fotografie einsetzt. Architektur ist Ausgangs
material und Inhalt ihrer Collagen, in denen sie sich mit Fragen der Wahrnehmung, mit Orientierung und Erinnerung beschäftigt. Sie zerlegt Bauten und
untersucht sie auf ihr skulpturales Potenzial. Aus ihrer Bildersammlung von gefundenen und eigenen Aufnahmen wählt sie Erker, Türme, Fensterbänder oder
ganze Fassaden aus, multipliziert sie mit dem Fotokopierer, verändert Größen
verhältnisse und fügt das so gewonnene Material zu futuristisch anmutenden,
schwebenden Strukturen zusammen. Die Texte für die erste Monografie von

Blending the Organic and the Architectonic
Artists who create collages appropriate existing images and assemble them
in new ways without being bound to a style or a medium. Frauke Dannert
(b. Herdecke, 1979; lives and works in Cologne and Düsseldorf) has
dedicated herself to this technique. Over the course of a decade, she has
built a considerable repertoire of forms she now variously applies in works on
paper, wall paintings, projections, films, and photographs. Architecture is the
basic material and subject of the collages in which she explores questions of
perception as well as orientation and recollection. She dismantles structures
to examine their sculptural potential. Drawing on a personal archive of
found pictures and her own photographs, she selects jutties, spires,
ribbon windows, or entire façades, makes multiple photocopies, and alters
dimensions and proportions. Out of the resulting elements she then pieces
together weightless structures with a futuristic air. Gunda Luyken, Jari Ortwig,
and Eveline Suter contributed essays to Frauke Dannert’s first monograph.
Tschernobyl – dreißig Jahre danach
Alina Rudya (geb. 1985 in der Ukraine, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) wurde im
Alter von einem Jahr nach der Atomkatastrophe von Tschernobyl am 26. April
1986 zusammen mit 50.000 anderen Menschen aus der benachbarten
Stadt Prypyat evakuiert. Ihr Vater, ein Ingenieur, hatte in jener Nacht, in der
der vierte Reaktor bei einem Testlauf explodierte, Dienst im Atomkraftwerk.
Dieser bisher schwerste Unfall in der Geschichte der Kernenergie setzte
eine großflächige hochradioaktive Wolke in die Atmosphäre frei, vor der alle
schnellstmöglich fliehen mussten. Nach einem Studium der Journalistik und
Politikwissenschaften sowie einer Ausbildung in Fotografie kehrte Rudya zum
30. Jahrestag der Katastrophe nach Tschernobyl zurück. Mit dem fotogra
fischen Projekt erzählt die Künstlerin von Menschen, die wie sie Prypyat 1986
verlassen haben. Gemeinsam mit ihnen erkundet Rudya die Vergangenheit
und die ehemaligen Wohnungen und dokumentiert mit neuen und histo
rischen Fotografien die Geschichte einer Stadt, die es nicht mehr gibt.

Chernobyl—Thirty Years Later
When Alina Rudya (b. Ukraine, 1985; lives and works in Berlin) was one year
old, she and fifty thousand others were evacuated from the city of Prypyat after
the nuclear disaster that occurred in the nearby Chernobyl power plant on
April 26, 1986. Her father, an engineer, was on duty in the power station that
night, when reactor no. 4 exploded during a systems test. The worst accident
in the history of nuclear energy to date released an enormous highly radioactive
cloud into the atmosphere, necessitating the hurried resettlement of all local
residents. After studying journalism and political science and training as a
photographer, Rudya returned to Chernobyl for the thirtieth anniversary of
the disaster. In the photographic project “Prypyat Mon Amour,” the artist
tells stories of people like herself whose lives were fundamentally changed
when they had to leave Prypyat in 1986. She joined them on a tour of their
former homes—a journey into their past—and compiled new as well as historic
photographs to document the history of a city that has ceased to exist.

Junge Fotografie aus dem Ruhrgebiet
Die Ruhrtriennale, das Festival der Künste in der Metropole Ruhr, fördert im
Jahr 2016 junge Fotokünstler. Die renommierten Fotografen Daniel Josefsohn
und Julian Röder geben dabei im Rahmen des Nachwuchsprogramms
Campustriennale Exhibition einen mehrwöchigen Fotografie-Meisterkurs
im Ruhrgebiet. Vier junge Fotografinnen und Fotografen werden unter An
leitung der beiden Fotografiestars neue eigene Arbeiten realisieren und ihre
Formensprache weiterentwickeln. Die während des Projekts entstehenden
Bilder sollen sich visuell mit dem Ruhrgebiet auseinandersetzen und einen
individuellen Blick auf die urbane und dezentrale Realität zeigen. Sie werden
daraufhin im Internet und in den Spielstätten präsentiert und in diesem Buch
veröffentlicht. Die Publikation trägt die gleichen Titel wie die beiden Meisterkurse „BUDE BETT BARGELD“ und „Licht unserer Tage“, die von allen vier
Teilnehmern durchlaufen werden. Da sie gleichrangig nebeneinander stehen,
ist das Buch von vorne und hinten gleichermaßen zu betrachten.
Ein äußerst innovativer Landschaftsfotograf
Dan Holdsworth (geb. 1974 in Welwyn Garden City, England, lebt und arbeitet
in London und Newcastle upon Tyne) schafft großformatige Fotografien und digitale Kunstwerke. Sie zeichnen sich durch den Einsatz traditioneller Techniken
und ungewöhnlich langer Belichtungszeiten sowie ihre radikal abstrakte Geografie aus. „Spatial Objects“ ist das Ergebnis seiner Auseinandersetzung mit
der heutigen Bildproduktion und dem, was er die „Oberflächenschnittstelle des
Bildes“ nennt. In der Informatik sind Spatial Objects Parameter, die zugleich an
einem bestimmten Ort in der Wirklichkeit und in der virtuellen Welt existieren.
Die Serie verknüpft die Kartierung des amerikanischen Westens durch den
U.S. Geological Survey mit der Formensprache minimalistischer Skulptur der
1960er und 1970er Jahre. Die Arbeiten überschreiten die Grenzen der Repräsentation, um die Ränder und Bruchstücke des Pixels sichtbar werden zu lassen, wie er sich, aufgelöst in der Geometrie des Interfaces selbst, in Strukturen
aus purer Farbe und Licht verwandelt. Mit einem Essay von Michele Robecchi.
Young Photography from the Ruhr Area
For 2016, Ruhrtriennale, the arts festival in the Ruhr metropolitan region, has
put the promotion of young photography artists on the agenda. As part of the
mentoring program Campustriennale Exhibition, the renowned photographers
Daniel Josefsohn and Julian Röder will each spend several weeks in the area
to teach a photography master class. Guided by the two star photographers,
four young photography artists will realize new works and hone their visual
language. The pictures to be created during the project will examine the
visual characteristics of the Ruhr district and present individual perspectives
on its polycentric urban reality. They will be presented online and at the
Ruhrtriennale venues and published in this book. Its double title quotes the
headlines of the two master classes—“PAD BED CASH” and “Light of Our
Days”—all four participants will take. Neither class takes priority over the
other, and so the book can be read from either side.

An Unusually Innovative Landscape Photographer
Dan Holdsworth (b. Welwyn Garden City, England, 1974; lives and works
in London and Newcastle upon Tyne) creates large-scale photographs and
digital art characterized by the use of traditional techniques and unusually
long exposure times, and by radical abstractions of geography. “Spatial
Objects” is the result of Holdsworth’s ongoing enquiry into contemporary
photographic imaging processes and what he calls the “surface interface
of the image.” In computer science, spatial objects refer to values that exist
within a specific place simultaneously in the real and the virtual spheres. The
starting point for his Spatial Objects series is U.S. Geological Survey mapping
data of the American West; it also draws on the vocabulary of Minimalist
sculptural practices of the 1960s and 1970s. Going beyond the limits of
representation, what one sees in these works are the edges and fragments of
the pixel resolved within the geometry of the interface itself, transformed into

New York und Berlin). Bekannt wurde sie Mitte der 1990er Jahre mit stilisierten, idealisierenden Porträts von ihren Freunden, Popstars und Angehörigen
europäischer Königshäuser. Die androgyn, sexuell ambivalent dargestellten
Personen sind kleinformatig in Öl auf Leinwand oder als Aquarelle, Bleistiftzeichnungen und Radierungen auf Papier ausgeführt. Als Vorlagen benutzt

“I read the Melody Maker like Marcel Proust,”
says Elizabeth Peyton (b. Danbury, CT, USA, 1965; lives and works in New
York and Berlin). She first attracted attention in the mid-1990s with stylized
and idealized portraits of her friends, pop stars, and members of European
royal houses. These characters, androgynous figures rife with sexual ambivalence, appear in small-format pictures executed in various techniques: oil on
canvas, watercolor or pencil drawing on paper, etching. Peyton’s sources are
photographs she either takes herself or sources from the yellow press. The
painter she says she admires most is David Hockney; many critics also see
the influence of Andy Warhol. Elizabeth Peyton has captured the faces of an
entire generation (of artists) in pictures that show a very personal touch. The
book presents highlights of her portraiture created between 1994 and 2014
from the Boros Collection: David Hockney, Kurt Cobain, Jarvis Cocker, Patti
Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jude Law, Jake Chapman, Lady Di, and others.

Film und Video. In ihren Bildern bewegt sich Sieverding zwischen Dokumentation und Inszenierung, wechselt von distanzierter Sachlichkeit zu dezidierter
Subjektivität und greift dafür auf dokumentarische und künstlerische Arbeits
weisen zurück. Die Arbeiten hinterfragen traditionelle Konzepte von Geschlecht,
Kultur und Normalität, beschäftigen sich mit spezifischen sozialen Orten und
mit den darin agierenden Menschen. Sieverding interessiert dabei primär
die Beziehung ihrer Subjekte zu ihren Körpern, von Frauen in traditioneller
islamischer Kleidung bis hin zu Drag Queens. Häufig porträtiert sie Menschen,
die sich als Teil einer Subkultur oder einer alternativen Kultur verstehen, wie
Hip Hop, die New Yorker Schwulenszene, verschiedene Metal-Richtungen oder
die Berliner Clubszene. Ihre eigene Position begreift sie als die der „aktiven
Beobachterin“. Nur so – einerseits involviert, andererseits durch die Kamera
distanziert vom Geschehen – kann Sieverding derart intime Bilder machen.

Fragile Images of the Body
Pola Sieverding (b. 1981; lives and works in Berlin) works with photography,
film, and video. Her images blend the documentary register with staging,
alternating between impersonal observation and emphatically subjective
creation and combining documentary with artistic techniques. Her works
scrutinize traditional conceptions of gender, culture, and convention, turning
the spotlight on specific stages of social life as well as the human protagonists
who appear on them. A primary interest of her analysis is how her subjects—
ranging from women in traditional Islamic garb to drag queens—relate to
their own bodies. She often portrays people who identify with subcultures
or alternative cultures such as the world of hip hop, New York’s gay scene,
varieties of heavy metal music, or the Berlin club scene. Her own position,
Sieverding says, is that of an “engaged observer.” Only by balancing
involvement with the distance from the action the camera affords her can
she shoot pictures of such focused intimacy.

Ashkan Sahihi (geb. 1963 in Teheran) wurde als Fotograf durch seine ein

Ashkan Sahihi (b. Tehran, 1963) is a photographer known for his unique work:
prisoners on death row, hip hoppers, writers, female soldiers, explorations
of the facial expressions of people under the influence of various drugs they
are trying for the first time. Sahihi’s family left Iran for Germany when he was
seven; he moved to New York in 1987 and subsequently created photographs

The postwar economic boom, the building of the Wall, the Cuban missile crisis,
the conflict in Vietnam—rigid frontlines defined the years between 1945
and 1968. The atmosphere of the Cold War informed the visual arts; East
and West were divided by figuration and abstraction. In the East, Socialist
Realism was the basis for any innovation; the West glorified Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art as symbols of freedom. This book, which documents the
second in a series of major exhibitions held by the Nationalgalerie, deliberately
transcends such divisions. Excerpts from the work of contemporary writers,

He rose to international fame with translations of natural physical phenomena
into spectacular works of art: Olafur Eliasson (b. Copenhagen, 1967; lives and

Over the years, Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson (b. Copenhagen,

Finding Your Way to Happiness
In 2014, the activities of the Autostadt in Wolfsburg revolved around the theme
of “Glück,” happiness. That is also the title of the yearbook with impressions
of happiness in the Autostadt. The chronicle is accompanied by four cast
aluminum plates inscribed with the words “Yes!,” “Happy,” “Glück,” and “If
you want to be happy, be.” A slipcase lined with fine metallic linen that holds
the plates as well as the publication makes for a unique book object.

iridescent street scenes and garishly lit scenarios by patiently building up

Tuschezeichnungen mit der Technik eines Tätowierers. 2010 vollzog er den
Wechsel vom Transparentpapier zur menschlichen Haut. Wilde Tiere und

Wiederholung als Prinzip
„dasselbe anders/immer dasselbe“ war der Titel einer Ausstellung von Charlotte
Posenenske (1930 – 1985) und Peter Roehr (1944 – 1968) im Wiesbadener
Kunsthaus. Für beide Künstler galt „Less is more“, sie arbeiteten in Serien,
entsubjektivierten die Arbeit und liquidierten so den traditionellen Status des
Künstlers, der Unikate als Basis des kommerziellen Kunstbetriebs schafft.
Gestik und Struktur
Nach der gefeierten Wiederentdeckung auf der documenta 12 richtete sich
das weltweite Interesse am Werk von Charlotte Posenenske vornehmlich auf
die technoiden Objekte, mit denen die minimalistische Konzeptkünstlerin
bekannt wurde, und nur gelegentlich, z. B. in diesem Buch, auch auf ihre

the same thing): that is the title of Charlotte Posenenske’s (1930 – 1985) and

is more”: that was true for both artists, who worked in series, stripping their
productions of subjective qualities and liquidating the traditional status on
which the commercial art world is based.

Messbare Distanz zwischen zwei Künstlern
Der Amerikaner Paul Thek (1933 – 1988) war Bildhauer und Maler und schuf
Objekte, die ihn legendär machten. Der belgische Künstler Luc Tuymans
(geb. 1958) malt nach bereits existierendem Fotomaterial gegenständliche
Bilder, die heikle Themen wie den Holocaust und 9/11 erkunden. Das Buch
zeigt in der Gegenüberstellung der beiden sehr verschiedenen Künstler ihren
verwandten Umgang mit Körperlichkeit und dem Moment der Stille.
Das Ruhrgebiet: Eine Kulturmetropole
„Urbane Künste Ruhr“ wurde 2012 im Nachgang zur Kulturhauptstadt Europas
RUHR.2010 gegründet. Gemeinsam mit Künstlern, Wissenschaftlern,
Forschern, Kunstinstitutionen und den Bewohnern des Ruhrgebiets werden
Projekte entwickelt und der Begriff „Kunst im öffentlichen Raum“ als viel
fältige Gestaltung von Stadt neu definiert. Das Buch bietet einen vollständigen
Projekt-Überblick und stellt die über 200 beteiligten Künstler und Partner vor.
Malerischer Zoom in die Natur
Vom Kunst-Boom Chinas der 1990er Jahre eher unberührt geblieben, erhält
das malerische Werk von Zhang Enli (geb. 1965 in der Provinz Jilin, China,
lebt und arbeitet in Schanghai) seit einigen Jahren internationale Aufmerksam
keit. Überzeugt davon, dass auch die Natur empfindungsfähig ist, ist seine
Technik die traditionelle chinesische Malerei, bei der die Bleistiftzeichnung unter

Die Vergänglichkeit der Kunst
Eine Nacht und einen Tag dauerte die Ausstellung 24h Skulptur in der Galerie
Sexauer in Berlin, die den Zeitskulpturen junger Künstler wie Alicja Kwade,
Humberto Díaz und Awst & Walther etablierte Referenz-Arbeiten von Dennis
Oppenheim, Roman Signer und Franz Erhard Walther gegenüberstellte. Die
meisten Skulpturen veränderten ihre Erscheinung während der Ausstellung
unaufhörlich oder wurden als skulpturale Aktionen aufgeführt.
The Measurable Distance Between Two Artists
The American sculptor and painter Paul Thek (1933 – 1988) created objects

The Ruhr Area: A Cultural Metropolis
“Urbane Künste Ruhr” was founded in 2012 in connection with the European
Capital of Culture RUHR.2010. It works with artists, academics, researchers,
art institutions, and the people of the Ruhr Area to develop projects and
reenvision “art in public space” as a process of multifaceted urban design.
The book presents an overview of all projects, and profiles the more than 200
contributing artists and partners.
A Painter Zooms In on Nature
The post-socialist art boom in 1990s China mostly passed by the painter
Zhang Enli (b. Jilin Province, China, 1965; lives and works in Shanghai), but
in the past few years, his oeuvre has garnered international attention. Deeply
convinced that nature, too, is capable of feeling, he treats his motifs with
the technique of traditional Chinese painting, applying highly diluted ink in

The Impermanence of Art
The exhibition 24h Skulptur at Galerie Sexauer, Berlin, which paired the
time sculptures by young artists like Alicja Kwade, Humberto Díaz, and
Awst & Walther with benchmarks of the genre by Dennis Oppenheim,
Roman Signer, and Franz Erhard Walther, lasted no more than one night and
one day. Most of the sculptures on display presented constantly changing
appearances; other pieces were performed live as sculptural actions.
