A Sweet Message
for the New Year
When Rabbi Kula was here in March, he taught us that the purpose
of all Jewish practice is to lead to human flourishing. He challenged
us to examine each Jewish practice and ask ourselves: What is its
job? How does it lead to human flourishing?
Recently, I came across a great example of what Rabbi Kula was
saying. Yoel Lessing took me on another tour of the beehives at the
SJCC. And, I remember something that Yoel taught me years ago
about why bees are so important to our environment. When bees
are around, everything around them flourishes. The flowers thrive,
there is more variety of nature, and all of nature gets a boost of life.
It occurred to me that this is why we say a blessing over honey on
Rosh Hashanah. The honey reminds us of the impact of the bees.
We want to have that impact, too. We want to live in such a way
that everyone around us flourishes. That’s what God meant when
God said to Abraham: Be a blessing, and may all the families of the
earth be blessed through you.
In the year ahead, we are going to be exploring together how small
2
acts like blessing the honey can add meaning and richness to our
lives. By adding as little as an hour of practice to our week, we can
bring a spiritual outlook to our lives that will add a sense of balance,
harmony, perspective, gratitude and joy that will bring happiness to
us and to others around us.
In our relationships with each other and all people this year, let’s
take a lesson from one of God’s humblest and most hard working
creatures. Let’s add sweetness to the world and let it be said of us
that when we are present, others around us come to life.
We can begin this Rosh Hashanah by saying the blessing over honey,
and reflecting on how we can be a blessing to those around us.
Here are the words:
Yehi ratzon milfanecha, Adonai eloheinu, veilohei avoteinu,
she’techadesh aleinu shanah tova u’metukah.
May it be your will, Lord our God and God of our ancestors,
to grant us sweetness and new growth in the coming year.
With warmest wishes for a beautiful New Year,
Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum

Opportunities for the New Year
Jewish Meditation
Jewish contemplative practices are activities that bring us closer to the
experience of what’s really happening in the present moment both on
the internal and external level. Join us for a series of Jewish meditation classes
with Moreh Eliyahu before Shabbat morning services 9:30 AM - 10:00 AM on
the following Saturday mornings: 10/10, 11/7, 12/5, 2/6, 4/16, 5/7, 6/18.
JFS Food Collection: Through Sunday, October 4
On average, 1,800 people per month need the Jewish Family Service Polack
Food Bank. Let’s work together to fill the food pantry shelves and provide
families in need with healthy, nutritious food options. Dean & Gwenn Polik
and Valerie Polack are once again generously contributing a matching gift
for every item we collect. Last year, HNT collected 4,550 lbs. This year, we
are shooting for 6,000! Please remember that we cannot accept previously
opened items, glass jars or perishables. Please place items in the marked
bins in the Upper & Lower Foyers.
Volunteers Needed!
JFS Food Sort: Sunday, October 4
We’ll meet at HNT at 9:45 AM to pack the
collected food and transport it to the JFS
warehouse, where we will help sort donations
from across the city from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
To volunteer, email [email protected].

can send them an information packet. Due to enhanced security measures
each adult attendee is asked to have this information.
Is there a cost for guests attending our services?
If you are a Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze level member we will not be
suggesting a donation of your guests. To help defray costs, others will be
asked if they wish to make a suggested donation of $180 per person for
each of the two holidays.
Reserved Seats are designated by a blue slipcover
How can I reserve a seat?
If you:
• Are a Platinum or Gold Member (call the office to become either)

service if their immediate family members
are still alive, all are
encouraged to stay.

Frequently Asked Questions: Continued...
Mahzor Lev Shalem Prayer Book
We encourage congregants to own a copy of the
Mahzor; High Holiday participation is enhanced
if time is spent with the liturgy beforehand. This
volume is rich in explanatory and additional readings.
Our recently adopted High Holiday prayer book
is available for purchase in the main office during
regular business hours. Thanks to the generous
grant from the Goldstein Family Foundation, we do
have 500 volumes available for use on a first come,
first serve basis in the upper & lower foyers.
Will there be enough High Holiday Mahzorim (prayer books) for
each congregant?
You are encouraged to purchase a personal copy of Mahzor Lev Shalem
from the front office for $33, in advance of the holiday.
Can I use the telephone?
Except in emergencies, telephone use is prohibited on Shabbat and
holidays. For those who must carry cell phones, please set them to silent.
If there is a 911 level emergency, see the security officer at any exit. There
are also phones throughout the building for emergencies only.
Fragrance-Free
Please refrain from using fragrances (perfumes, colognes, etc.), as there are
members who are highly allergic to these substances. Gum chewing is also
inappropriate in the worship spaces.
In Case of Emergency
Notify an usher, a security officer or staff member. Telephones for
emergency use are located in most rooms. First Aid kits are in the main
office and kitchen at HNT. AEDs are located on each level.
Please put your name on your ritual items including your
mahzor and talit so they can be returned if misplaced.
