The mission of the
Theta Phi Alpha
Foundation
is to fund
scholarships and
grants,
philanthropic
endeavors, and
educational
programming with
a focus on
developing
women’s
leadership skills.
Letter from the Chairman
Dear Sisters,
The Theta Phi Alpha Foundation accomplished a
great deal during the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
The nine positions on the Board were fully
staffed for the entire year. Three Directors
fulfilled their commitment to the Foundation and
chose to step down at the end of their term which
coincided with the end of the fiscal year. We
wish to recognize and thank these women for
their service to the Foundation—Patricia Rankin
Marmaduke, Σ; Monica Lerma, ΓΖ; and Michelle
Short Porter, ΑΝ. The Board welcomes three
new Directors—Karen J. Fisher, ΑΝ; Rebecca
Dixon McLaren, ΑΜ; and Leslie Ervin Trahant,
ΑΒ. (Note: Since the end of the fiscal year and
the publishing of this report, two Directors have
resigned—Christina Kay O’Brien, Κ; and
Christine Labbate, ΓΜ. Those positions are
currently open. The Board also thanks these
women for their service.)
2
At the Centennial Convention held in Ann Arbor,
Michigan, the Foundation awarded 12
scholarships—including our first ever $2,000
scholarship—presenting a total of $13,000 in
scholarships. In addition, a check for $6,000 was
presented to Glenmary Home Missioners to
support Camp Friendship and a check for $5,000
was presented to the Elizabeth Smart
Foundation in honor of our Siena Medalist.
Where Did the Money
Come From?

In this report::
What Did We Do With
the Money?
Twenty-three alumnae associations, chapters,
groups, and individuals fulfilled their
commitment to donate $1,000 or more to the
Centennial Society. These monies were used to
provide the $2,000 scholarship at Convention as
well as to fund Convention programming. The
future of the Centennial Society is under review
by the Board. Additional information will be
coming soon.
Two additional endowed funds were fully funded
during this fiscal year—the Megan V. Beck
Scholarship Fund and the Dr. Mari Ann Callais
Leadership Endowment.
These funds will
continue to provide scholarships and leadership
opportunities to sisters into the future.
The Directors want to thank all those Fraternity
members and friends of Theta Phi Alpha who
have supported the Foundation so generously
over the past year. We will continue to use your
contributions in the very best interests of Theta
Phi Alpha.
Fraternally,

Elizabeth Smart—2012 Siena Medal Recipient
The abduction of Elizabeth Smart was
one of the most followed child abduction
cases of our time. Elizabeth was abducted on June 5, 2002 and her captors had
controlled her by threatening to kill her
and her family if she tried to escape.
Fortunately, the police safely returned
Elizabeth back to her family on March
12, 2003, after being held prisoner for
nine months. Through this traumatic
experience Elizabeth has become an advocate for change related to child abduction, recovery programs and National
legislation. Elizabeth triumphantly testified before her captor and the world
about the very private nightmare she
suffered during her abduction, which lead
to conviction. Elizabeth is currently involved in the “Elizabeth Smart Foundation”, and she has helped promote The
National AMBER Alert, The Adam
Walsh Child Protection & Safety Act and
other safety legislation to help prevent
abductions. Elizabeth is also a News
Correspondent for ABC News.
Elizabeth’s abduction and recovery has
motivated and continues to motivate parents, law enforcement and leaders worldwide to focus on children’s safety. Emphasizing the vigilance of every day people in finding missing children and the
belief that there is always hope and we
can never stop searching for each and
every missing child. Two years ago, Elizabeth worked with the Department of
Justice and four other recovered young
adults in creating a survivors guide, entitled – “You're Not Alone: The Journey
From Abduction to Empowerment.” This
guide is meant to encourage children who
have gone through similar experiences to
not give up and know that there is life
after tragic events.
Elizabeth’s example and life now is a
daily demonstration that there really is
life after a tragic event. She travels and
speaks about not only her story, but also
topics such as overcoming extreme adversity and not allowing your past to dictate
your life's future.
Elizabeth is studying music at Brigham
Young University with an emphasis on
harp performance.
Elizabeth Smart received the 2012
Siena Medal at the Centennial Convention held in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Glenmary Home Missioners—
Camp Friendship
Each June, Camp Wrenwoode, near
Amory, Mississippi, transforms into
Camp Friendship—two weeks of camp
open to children of low-income families.
For many years, Theta Phi Alpha alumnae associations, chapters, and individual sisters have provided support through
the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation to Camp
Friendship with monetary support, by
providing supplies for the children, and
even working as volunteer counselors
during the camp.
At the Centennial Convention
the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation
presented Father Dominic Duggins of Glenmary Home Missioners with a check for $6,000,
which completely covers the
costs of two weeks of Camp
Friendship.

Friendship.
Scholarships and Leadership Grants
Each year at Leadership Conference or
Convention, the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation presents scholarships to collegians
and alumnae based on academic performance, financial need, and service to
Theta Phi Alpha.
sonal awareness, commitment to their
fraternity or sorority, and grow to expect
values-based action from themselves and
those they lead. In 2012, two such grants
were awarded.
At the Centennial Convention, 12 scholarships were presented to deserving sisters, including one scholarship of $2000
funded by the Centennial Society, for a
total of $13,000 in scholarships.
Since 1961, the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation has awarded 429 scholarships worth
over $268,700.

The Theta Phi Alpha Foundation also
provides grants for sisters to attend UIFI
– the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute – a program that offers participants the opportunity to explore, define,
and enhance their leadership skills, per-
2012 UIFI Grant recipients LeeAnn Prisk, ΒΕ,
and Ashley Morton, ΓΡ.
Convention Programming
Each year at Leadership Conference and
National Convention, the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation funds educational programs and speakers to benefit the sisters
of Theta Phi Alpha. Topics include values
-based leadership, risk management,
campus and personal safety, etiquette,
scholarship, gender differences, and other
issues pertinent to today’s college women.
In 2012, Theta Phi Alpha Foundation
sponsored Ginny Carroll’s Bring Out the
Best drove home “The Three Rs: Recruitment, Retention, and Ritual” and how
essential they are to a chapter’s success.
Theta Phi Alpha Foundation, together
with Theta Phi Alpha Fraternity, also
sponsored Past National President Dr.
Mari Ann Callais’ trip to speak to the
Panhellenic women at the University of
Michigan. The gift of the presentation
at our founding campus was in honor of
Theta Phi Alpha’s Centennial.

The Centennial Society was established in 2010:

to assist the Fraternity in providing a spectacular
2012 Convention to celebrate our anniversary by
providing speakers, educational programming, and
activities that fall within our legal and financial abilities;

to continue to provide scholarships to Theta Phi Alpha sisters, and introduce a special $2,000 scholarship with a focus on service to the Fraternity;

to add to the Foundation’s investment portfolio to
help ensure that the activities, scholarships, and assistance to the Fraternity continues in the years
ahead.
Theta Phi Alpha Foundation gratefully acknowledges these alumnae associations, chapters,

Matching Funds
The 1912 Society is a special
recognition given to those
sisters who remember the
Theta Phi Alpha Foundation
through planned giving. It is
easier than you might think!
Simply include the Foundation
in your will or as a beneficiary
or partial beneficiary of an
insurance policy or retirement
account. Please contact the
Foundation if you would like
assistance with this process or
if you would like to review the
Theta Phi Alpha Foundation
Gift Acceptance Policy.
The
Sustaining
Sister
Program is a method that
allows you to give what you
want to give, when you want
to give it, without having to
write a check or pay for
postage to send it to National
Office. Contributions are made
on a regular and predetermined basis through
direct checking account
withdrawals. This service is
free to donors and can be
accessed by completing the
document on the Theta Phi
Alpha website under the
Foundation tab.
At the end of fiscal year 20112012, the Foundation held
three fully endowed funds.
 Sigma Scholarship Fund
 Megan V. Beck Scholarship
Fund
 Dr. Mari Ann Callais Leadership Endowment
An easy and cost efficient
method of increasing your contributions to the Foundation is
through a matching gifts program with your employer. The
size of the donations and ratios that employers are willing
to match vary. Some offer a
set ratio, while others set a
maximum dollar amount.

The Foundation is extremely
grateful that the Alpha Nu
Memorial Scholarship Fund is
on its way to becoming fully
endowed.
Endowed funds are required to
maintain a minimum balance
of $20,000. The interest income generated from that balance as well as donations received after the minimum balance is reached are then used
to provide grants and/or scholarships according to each
fund’s purpose.
