Siloam Spring 2016

Siloam Spring 2016
Like many Winnipeggers, spring is
my favorite time of year. The long cold
winter has given way to slushy streets.
We have taken off the layers of clothing,
scarves, mittens, toques and boots
to feel the warm breeze of spring. We
are even witnessing the signs of life,
gently poking their head through the
still cool soil.
Spring is a glorious time of the year
when there are bursts of energy and
hope. The stark white winter gives way
to the riotous colours of greens and
reds and blues and yellow. As Robin
Williams said: “Spring is nature’s way
of saying – Let’s Party!”
Spring is also the time of year when we
at Siloam Mission look forward to what
could be in the days to come. We are
really excited about our new capacity
building project. If you have passed our
building on Princess just before meal
times, you will have inevitably seen
long lines made up of our community
members waiting to get into the
building. The problem is that we have
around 500 individuals who come
for each meal, and only 140 places
at the tables. Those outside have to
wait until others finish their meal and
leave before they can enter. Because
this is Winnipeg, on many days those
waiting have to endure bitterly cold
temperatures and wind in the winter
or searing heat in the summer. Our
refurbishing of 303 Stanley (building
directly behind our present Mission) will
allow us to seat everyone at the same
time. No one will need to stand in the
cold or the heat.
In addition, to the exciting changes to
303 Stanley we are also going to build
a link between our buildings. Currently
our emergency shelter is filled to
capacity each night. Every day we are
forced to turn away men and women
who have no safe place to sleep. One
of the main functions of “the link” will
be to allow us to have more beds for
all our patrons. We are hopeful, this will
allow us never to have to say to those in
need – “Sorry we have no more beds.”
The final piece of this exciting venture
is that we will be also able to add more
supportive housing. This will allow our
community members to move out of
the emergency shelter into their own
room – a place to call home.

Each spring, God gives us the gift
of new life, but with that comes an
expectation the good steward will tend
and care for what He has given. God
has given Siloam Mission a vision of the
harvest to come and He expects us to
be good stewards in tending and caring
for His Children.
Our hope is that we can provide a
place where no one has to stand in the
cold, where everyone who needs a safe
place to sleep has one and that each of
our community members has a place
they can call home. Please pray with
me as we move forward

Easter – A Time of Hope
With the help the Manitoba Real Estate Association (sponsor) and a very dedicated
team of volunteers, we were able to provide an incredible Easter feast to 950
members of our Siloam community. Meanwhile Chef Ryan and his staff along with a
lovely group of volunteers were able to serve a fabulous Easter lunch to our residents
at The Madison. Easter is the season for hope and your gifts make it happen. Thank
Manitoba Please know these also reflect YOUR DONATIONS AT WORK.
Peace of my heart
“Kindness is something I never had much of as
a child. I am grateful of that kindness at Siloam.
I come to this place because I know I will not
be judged. There are people here that are in my
same situation and I feel a sense of belonging. I
come to this place in peace. I will leave in peace
so that the volunteers and workers can continue
to provide the good things to the less fortunate.”
— Client
Siloam Mission is a connecting
point between the compassionate
and Winnipeg’s less fortunate.
“Love is patient and kind; love does
not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or
rude. It does not insist on its own way;
it is not irritable or resentful; it does not
rejoice at wrong doing, but rejoices with
the truth. Love bears all things, believes
all things, hopes all things, and endures
all things. Love never ends.”
– 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Time for reflection
“I can’t imagine anyone having to live
that way.”
Those are the words of 90 year old Helen
Hiebert from Niverville. Humble Helen took
time to sew quilts for people who have to
sleep out on the streets.

Say a little prayer for me
“So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and
especially to those who are of the household of the faith.” — Galatians 6:10
Spiritual care plays a huge role in our
Transition Services area. Because of
the incredible generosity of Palliser
Furniture & Casana Furniture Company
our Chaplain Ramona Pauls was able to
open the doors of a brand new chapel
and meditative space. As a spiritual
advisor and confidant, Ramona plays
a critical role for our Transition
Services Team.
By having a dedicated space, she can
have an even more positive impact on
helping people make their way out of
poverty and homelessness.

Messages from God’s heart
Merci Professeure Heller et les etudiantsfuture angels of mercy from the 3rd
Year Nursing Program at Université de
Saint-Boniface for visiting our Drop-In to
talk about mental health issues and the
resources available to our guests. Mental
health issues are the most common
ailment we deal with in the Saul Sair
Health Centre. A wonderful gesture of
outreach and caring.

Centre and volunteer opportunities visit:

The art program is a very special one at Siloam. It gives many clients a release from
their daily struggles and opportunity for self-worth and entrepreneurism. Because
of donations like art supplies from Native Reflections our guests can take the time
to express themselves and sell their art.

Feature Volunteers
June is a regular in the Kitchen and has
been volunteering with his church group
since 2008. Whether it’s organizing clothes
and shoes downstairs or helping in the
kitchen every week, June embraces the
opportunity to meet different people and
hear their stories.
“I am an outgoing person, love sports and
work out activities. I love meeting some
new friends from all walks of life. Siloam
Mission really cares for those experiencing
homeless. I saw dedicated people giving
up their time to serve in the community
and I wanted to be a part of it.”
After coming for a tour in 2014,
Tom knew he wanted to be part of
the Siloam Community and has been
volunteering ever since. Tom is a people
person and it didn’t take long before he
was volunteering in the Kitchen and the
Drop In, connecting with people and
serving others!
Sunny days ahead
Because of you, Siloam’s Transition
Services program (T.S) had the chance to
go on a rare field trip and spend a sunny
winter day at Birds Hill Provincial Park.
“I didn’t know they had this stuff to offer
not far from Winnipeg, It’s good to get out
of the city and get some fresh air,” Melissa
Morrisseau – T.S Client
In the front lines
Our Front Line Services Manager
Vanessa Gamblin embraced her invite
from MP Robert Falcon-Oullette to
present to a Parliamentary Budget
Committee in Ottawa. She also
appeared on National television to
talk about homelessness and poverty
in Winnipeg.

Reflections
Mo’ ‘Money’
Because of you Manitoba we were
able to collect $1945.00 which was
generously matched by Canadian Tire.
Big thanks to Virgin Radio Winnipeg,
TSN Radio 1290 999 BOB FM and
Auto Gallery of Winnipeg for collecting
your generous donations.
Pounding the pavement
“You get to think about other people,
instead of always thinking of yourself.
You get to give to somebody else
instead of yourself all the time. And
you get something out of it. It’s a
cool feeling!”
On your feet all day. Whether in the cold of winter or the
heat of summer, pounding the pavement takes its’ toll.
This past weekend, an amazing group of Nursing students
and instructors from Assiniboine Community College
came by to offer 2 days of foot care for our community.
Now try to imagine how good that visit must have felt!
Taking the time
Councillors Mike Pagtakhan, Jenny Gerbasi, Cindy Gilroy,
Scott Gillingham, Ross Eadie, Russ Wyatt, Jason Schreyer &
Brian Mayes from the City of Winnipeg were welcomed with
open arms for a tour of Siloam and a lunch prepared in our
kitchen! We were honoured that you took the time to learn
more about what we do!
Shop for Siloam
Connecting Point!
Because of you, February’s Shop for Siloam – Sobeys
– Kenaston location, yielded a total of 1577 lbs, cash
donations, 42 banana boxes full of food and two boxes
of hygiene items. Thank you for your generosity!
“It’s funny how I never thought life would have some
homelessness in it. Now that I’ve experienced the reality of
poverty, my appreciation for home and health is staggering.”
