Spring is around the corner the corner, when we are enjoying Rally in the
Valley, spring will have sprung. March 20th is the official first day of
spring. Be sure to set you clock ahead one hour before you go to sleep
on Saturday March 13th.
Speaking of Rally in the Valley – Our committee, led by the fearless Jim
and Mary Kay, are hard at work making sure this year’s Rally in the
Valley is the best yet! In case you haven’t heard, we have a great line-up
of fun to be had:
Self-Guided Rides, 7 quality Vendors, Gold Angels, Friday Night Meet
and Greet, Saturday Night Ice Cream Social, The Rally in the Valley
Players in our version of Laughin-In-Laughlin entertainment, Grand
Prizes, Cash Drawings, Games, and Friends. Sharon and I are really
looking forward to all the fun.
I will be out of town at this month’s meeting. I will be in beautiful Phoenix
Arizona. I will be participating in a training event, called Lead Like You
Ride at GWRRA Headquarters. Not to fear, Sharon will be taking care of
all the particulars at this month’s gathering.
??Mystery Rides??
Please take a look at Rob’s article about our first Mystery Ride. We had
an awesome turnout for this short and friendly ride. This format allows
riders at all levels to help practice their skills while have fun. Please keep
an eye on the calendar for the next mystery ride and more.
Let’s keep the “Fun” momentum going! Plan to be at one or more CA1R
events each month in addition to our regular gathering.

Rides and Rally
What did I just see last Sunday? Was it really a large group of Chapter R
RIDERS doing a chapter ride or was I just in a déjà vu dream. We definitely
violated the typical 5 to a group rule….but the decision was unanimous and
fun. We rode together, waited for those caught at lights, nobody got lost and
the only incidents we experienced were awesome views, gorgeous weather
and a nice little brunch… all in the morning hours. A couple of our members
actually made a return to the lineup. It was as if they had not missed a beat.
Glad to see them back in the saddle. Perhaps Rob has the recipe. If folks
can’t devote their weekends to longer rides, let’s do some regular short runs. I
know we look forward to them.
On another note:
I hope you all have the opportunity to attend the Rally in the Valley this year. I
can assure that if you miss it, you will miss one the best we’ve ever put on.
The RIV staff really outdid themselves and the winner for their efforts is you.
Great room rates, excellent facilities, lots of prizes and a show that will blow
you away. You will be surprised at the talent we have in our midst. So get
yourself out to Laughlin and experience the best RIV yet.

Message from your Tour Director – Rob Levig
Hello CA1R – Summer is here! Well not exactly according to the calendar, but
it sure feels like it. Remember to pack a couple of extra water bottles on your
bike and keep hydrated. We are so lucky - on the East Coast, motorcycles
have been “winterized” since November because of the cold, snow and ice. For
fun I called a riding buddy of mine that lives in Wassau, WI just to rub it in that I
just returned from a ride and MAN… it was hot out! I didn’t feel too bad about it
– he rides a Harley!
Rally in the Valley is just a few weeks away, and our members are busy with
the final details to ensure a fun time for all. I was putting some final touches on
the rally ride board and getting the ride route sheet ready to print and it
occurred to me that I’ve never actually ridden on one of the rides at our own
event. I mean never.
I imaging that many of you are just like me. Check into the event hotel and get
caught up in all the activities that you forget (or think you don’t have enough
time) to explore the area and your bike, trike or car never leaves the parking
lot. That's a shame. Laughlin provides a great base camp for some really fun
riding and cool destinations. I encourage each of you to find some spare time
and take advantage of being in Laughlin and what the area provides.
I wanted to share just a few “can’t miss” ride destinations available at Rally in
the Valley – Laughlin. Detailed routes sheets available at the Rally.
1. Hoover Dam - It’s only 97 miles away. Here’s your chance to enjoy this
amazing engineering marvel. Check out the visitor center plus take a
guided tour. This is a must see landmark, and the ride is fun too. You can
go directly there or make a loop through Kingman.

March 2016
2.
Oatman – It’s only 31 miles away. This former mining town in the
Black Mountains of Mohave County is famous for their “wild” burros that
come into town every morning looking for food and to greet visitors.
Burro pellets and carrots are for sale at many of the shops. If you feel
like putting on few more miles, then continue to Kingman then loop back
to Laughlin. These are fun towns to visit.
Coming up in March…. Put these on your radar:
3/4 – Water Company Tour – Fountain Valley. Meeting up at 10:00, but contact Matt
Sokel first for location details and some security and dress code requirements.
[email protected]
3/5 – Chapter Meeting at Mimi’s in Lake Forest. Opens at 7:00
3/6 –Sunday Mystery Brunch – Meeting at the Chevron Station – corner of Chapman
and Jamboree. KSU 8:00 sharp. Let’s go for a short ride and get brunch. You’ll know
where, when we get there!
3/12 – Saturday Mystery Brunch – Meeting at the gas station – corner of PCH and
Laguna Canyon Rd. KSU 8:00 sharp. No excuses this time…. Let’s go for a short ride
and then eat. You’ll know where, when we get there!
3/15 – Tour & Staff Meeting – 6:00 to 8:00. Mimi’s on Lake Forest. All are welcome.
Bring your ideas.
3/18 – 3/20: Rally in the Valley! Many of us are going up on the 17th. Watch for a ride
meet-up location on the calendar.
-------------------------------Final thoughts…. Remember that we participate in a sport with some inherent risk.
Dress for the slide, not just for the ride. ATGATT (wear All The Gear, All The Time).
Be safe!

Hello California,
It’s hard to believe that February is over. It has been a
whirlwind for us and loving every minute of it…well almost. We have visited 6
chapters and best of all went to the first rally of the year…CA-1I’s Valentine Run. For
those of you that couldn’t attend, you missed a lot of FUN, a great ride, and lots of
wonderful prizes. The new Chapter of the Year was announced…CA-1F…great job,
with CA-2S as a worthy participant. Hope many of the chapters will participate this
year so we can show everyone how great California is. We have the best chapters in
the country, but then I am a little biased. For those of you that did attend, Thank you
for being a part of my surprise for Bob…his valentine gift. Three months of planning,
paying, shipping from FL, and receiving without Bob’s
knowledge was a challenge, but I can honestly say he
was totally surprised and blown away when he
received his 2012 new Eurowing Trike. A special
thank you to Joel Winkler and Bert’s Mega Mall for
assisting me with this endeavor. We learned
something very important about buying a vehicle from
another state, if it has under 7500 miles on it, it better
have a CA emissions certification label on the bike. If
it does not, you must tow it out of the state, ride it until
7500 miles and then bring into CA to register it. With
only 2000 miles on our trike, we were lucky…it had the certification. Whew!
The year is progressing quickly. We will be attending the Lead Like u Ride training in
Phoenix, March 5. Hope a number of you can take advantage of this great
opportunity. Then off to Rally in the Valley with CA-1R in Laughlin, NV. Great FUN
and wonderful riding. Hope to see many of you there.
You can start making plans for California District Rally - Gold Wing Super Bowl September 23-25, 2016 in Bakersfield at the DoubleTree Hilton we are going to have
FUN starting with a Tailgate Party the night before.
A new opportunity - a special drawing…the TRIFECTA. To be eligible, Attend: Region
F Rally in Albuquerque, Wing Ding in Billings, and CA District Rally.
Come support the district this year!

Hope you are having fun with your NFL teams and the District game. Many of you
are on your way to your first touchdown from what I hear. Go California!
What we love about all of this is you guys, our GWRRA family. No matter what we
are doing or where we are, we have FUN just being with you.
Join the FUN. Ride safe. Look forward to seeing you around California this
year.

I have lived in Dana Point for 17 years and enjoy an ocean view.
I am single with no kids. Some will be familiar with my dog Oliver.
I worked for IBM as a sales representative in their Government &
Education office in LA. At 32 I decided I wanted to try something
different and got into law enforcement. I have been a reserve deputy
with the Orange County Sheriff Department for 30 years. I have
worked in Patrol, Corrections and Transportation retiring in 2014. I
now work in the private security industry. Sometimes it could be
guarding a celebrity on a movie location or watching over high dollar
property and everything in between.
I starting riding mini bikes at 12 years old, getting my 1st motorcycle
at 18; a Honda 305 Scrambler. Over the past years I've had 10 bikes,
including 2 Honda ST 1300's and a couple Harley's.
Three years ago I went to Huntington Honda to get an oil change on
my ST. Coming home with a Goldwing F6B with what I refer to as my
$20,000 oil change.
To say I am glad to be a member of GWRRA and chapter 1R would be
an understatement. Everyone has been more than kind to me as a
new member.
I look forward to all activities that I can participate in and want to
help grow the chapter.
I consider it and honor to be the chapters "Individual of the year".
