Last year we introduced this promise as the bedrock of our commitment to you—
our friends and neighbors—who rely upon Glens Falls Hospital (GFH) for quality,
dependable and accessible health care. Big-City Medicine/Hometown Care is a special
combination of sophisticated technologies and clinical experts one might find in the most
advanced metropolitan medical center, along with the human compassion and caring
found only among hometown friends, neighbors, and family. It is the tradition of this
regional health care organization and is our commitment to the future. Over the past year, politics and economics created an extraordinary environment for
health care providers, one that would test the most resolute of promises. I am pleased
to report that the GFH promise is as strong today as the day it was conceived. Equally
important, great progress continues to happen in the realization of its fulfillment.
The most significant change in health care since last year’s report is the passage of the
Affordable Care Act, widely referred to as the national health care reform law. Generally
acknowledged as the most far-reaching health legislation since the creation of Medicare
and Medicaid in 1965, the new law touches upon nearly every aspect of health care for all
Americans, including its delivery and financing. While there is much in the law that makes
us apprehensive, there are elements that resonate clearly with our mission and where
we are going. We are encouraged by its emphasis on quality patient outcomes and on
hospitals being an integral partner in primary care and health and wellness promotion. We support its call for providers to seamlessly integrate services for increased patient

Comprehensive, integrated services have defined GFH for many years and continue to be
our focus. Since its founding in 1993, the C. R. Wood Cancer Center has been providing a
wide range of integrated cancer care unsurpassed in our region, including early detection,
advanced treatment options, innovative educational and support services and cancer
prevention programs. Glens Falls Hospital’s expansion from 12 to 29 regional facilities
in the past decade, with more than half of those being physician practices, is another
example of how GFH is evolving and adapting as the premier system of patient-centered
health care in the region. In fact, this is the aspiration for GFH as expressed by the Board
of Governors in its updated strategic plan completed last year.

In addition to new legislative mandates, a difficult federal and state economic climate
created exceptional challenges for us this past year. The New York State 2011-2012 budget
slashes hospital Medicaid payment rates at a level which exceeds cuts from the previous
three years. Nonetheless, our operating results, while razor thin, reflected a small surplus
in 2010 and we believe we have a realistic budget to achieve the same in 2011.
PUBLIC SUPPORT:
Promises are more meaningful when they are kept and fulfilled, especially in the midst of
challenging obstacles. We are not daunted by the politics and economics of the health
care environment. Rather, we are energized by them.

The community benefit provided by GFH to the region exceeds $22 million. This includes
more than $8 million in costs incurred by the hospital that exceed Medicare and Medicaid
payments and an additional $8 million in care provided to the uninsured, underinsured
and subsidized services essential to access for this region.
We are excited about the Big-City Medicine advances being implemented, including
the creation of the Harry M. “Mac” DePan Surgical Care Unit and the acquisition of an
ambulatory Electronic Medical Record (EMR) that will demonstrably improve the operation
of the Hospital’s physician practices throughout the region. At the same time, feedback
from patients about their positive experiences at all Glens Falls Hospital locations exceeded
our goals.
I encourage you to take a few minutes to read through these pages and learn about the

Radiation Oncology integrates the patient clinical record,
treatment history and images into one electronic record.

The Greenwich Regional Medical Center offers
digital mammography imaging services and, at
the end of 2010, began offering diagnostic breast
imaging in Greenwich under the direction of
our radiologists at Glens Falls Hospital utilizing
advanced technology. In 2010, 1,450 screening
mammograms were performed in Greenwich.

Urgent Care at the Cambridge Family Health Center provides
prompt, walk-in care for non-threatening injuries or illnesses

uniquely qualifies the Hospital to offer premium, reimbursable
oncology rehabilitation services to cancer survivors suffering
from debilitating side effects caused by treatments.

Services Program of Warren, Washington and Hamilton
Counties at the C. R. Wood Cancer Center in 2010. This
program, funded by state and federal grants, offers free breast
and cervical exams and colon cancer screening kits to people
with little or no health insurance.
h The Adirondack Sleep Disorders Lab provides patients with
living
specialized medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment
of sleep disorders. A coordinated team of specialists
provides comprehensive care using sophisticated diagnostic
technology to monitor breathing, heart rhythm, blood oxygen
level and all other aspects of sleeping patterns.
h The Regional Diabetes Center provides education and support
to diabetes patients and to those at risk for diabetes. Effective
glucose control and self-management are key objectives.

School in Lake Luzerne and the Whitehall Elementary School.

ensure that every child has the opportunity to come to school

breast irradiation in the treatment of breast cancer post
lumpectomy. The latest mode of delivery is the multilumen balloon which reduces treatment time from six
weeks to five days with few or no side effects.

The GFH Guild, founded in 1903 by a small group of
individuals, currently totals more than 730 men and
women in service to the Hospital. In addition, Junior
volunteers ages 13 to 18 contribute a minimum of two
hours per week as part of their six-month commitment.

The Guild contributed nearly $50,000 and more than
43,000 hours of service to the Hospital in 2010. In the entire history of the Guild, volunteers have
contributed a staggering $2,938,806 and 1,957,255 hours
of service to GFH. C

Our Behavioral Health staff offers compassion and
respect for each patient’s health and well-being as they
meet life’s challenges. The region’s most comprehensive
array of mental health services include: outpatient mental
health care for adults and children; outpatient alcohol
and substance abuse services; outpatient full-day clinical
care for adults; intensive Case Management, and inpatient
psychiatric treatment for adults.

GFH offers patients and visitors a golf cart shuttle service
to help transport them to and from parking lots to the
Hospital entrance. In 2010, volunteer drivers transported
15,598 individuals round-trip from their cars and back via
shuttle.

Oncology Education and Cancer Support Services offer
11 support and activity groups, including Tai Chi, an art
workshop and the “Knitting Circle.” Groups provide
disease-specific and general cancer support for patients
and their families as they cope with cancer in their lives.

the Lifeline Program, provides medical assistance to nearly

Since our founding in 1897, through the investment and
involvement of local people, the history of Glens Falls
Hospital is testament to what our community can
accomplish. The Hospital could not have become the
comprehensive institution it is today without private
philanthropic support. Since our inception people
have contributed to our growth and, therefore, the
growth and health of the community. Farm to Table 2010 was an opportunity
for our friends and neighbors to enjoy a unique
dining experience while sampling meals from the
fall harvest, prepared by the region’s finest chefs,
using the best local products, as they along with
nutritionists taught us about the importance and
benefits of eating and shopping locally.

The completely redesigned, patient-focused unit
will include design features that support optimal
care, comfort and safety for our patients and
their visitors. The unit is being named in honor
of Dr. Harry M. “Mac” DePan, one of our
region’s legendary surgeons.
