A Message from the President - Chris Spendley
On August 13th the Club hosted its second annual employee appreciation day . The event was a
tremendous success and I would like to thank the members who volunteered their time to work the event
as well as the members who contributed gifts. This event is unique and the employees truly appreciate it.
The best part for me is meeting the families of our employees and listening to their upbeat and positive
view of our Club. We truly have a wonderful Club, it is built on solid traditions and is composed of good
people – this was truly evident that evening and I want to say thank you for supporting such a wonderful
event.
Last month I asked the membership several questions that I often think about as it relates to our Club.
I received a few emails all of which had a good perspective. I will repeat the questions in this month’s
letter in order to encourage additional responses.
In September we will begin planning for next year and I would love to have some feedback from the
membership on ways we could improve our Club. So if you have any thoughts on the questions below.
1.) Why are so many members not spending their food minimum and are therefore billed for
unspent minimums?
2.) Why is Women’s golf on weekends, especially in tournaments, not well attended?
3.) Why do so many members use carryout service as compared to other clubs?
4.) What can we do to encourage a larger lunch business?
5.) What can we do to encourage and welcome new members into our Club?
6.) How can we make our Club a more user-friendly Club, especially during the winter months?
7.) With the average age of our Club being so young, what things should we be doing differently to
encourage more use of our Club?
8.) Do we have a sense of community within our Club?
9.) How do people outside of our Club perceive our members?
10.)Do we market ourselves properly to the community and to perspective members?
The focus of the next few months will be to start the planning process for the upcoming year.
Sometimes I feel that we are guilty of repeating all the same events from the previous year. In addition to
the above questions if anyone has any ideas for new events or changing our current events please send me
an email at [email protected]. I hope each of you enjoy our Club and if you are not enjoying yourself,
please take the time to offer some constructive ideas for improvement.
Thank you.
Chris

Dear Member,
On August 13, the Club hosted the second annual employee appreciation party for the staff.
The day could not have been nicer and featured a nine hole golf outing, a cookout poolside and
concluded with every employee receiving a gift. This event would not have been possible without
the generosity of the membership to donate their time and make personal donations of cash,
sporting event tickets and gift cards. Enclosed in this newsletter is a list of everyone who
contributed to this great event. Special thanks to Chris Spendley for being the driving force
behind this year’s event. The entire staff sends a huge Thank You to everyone involved with this
year’s event.
Fall is a spectacular time of the year to spend quality time at the Club. Our golf course has
weathered a very difficult summer season and is in good shape. The Club still needs rain to
replenish our ponds and hopefully we will continue to receive mild temperatures and an
occasional shower.
The Membership Committee has been hard at work redefining the membership classifications
the Club offers. These revised and updated classifications will be sent to the membership in the
months to come. The Club is still in the membership replenishment mode and we need more
golfing members. Current members both golfing and social are eligible to receive a one thousand
dollar credit on your membership statement for referring a new golfing member to the Club.
This incentive runs through the month of September.
The clubhouse will be offering several special events in the month of September. Please review
the following events and call the Club early to make a reservation:
September 14 - Children’s Movie Night “Home Alone”
September 21 - Lobster Night
September 26 - Family Night Featuring “Reptiles Alive”
In addition to these special events, the Club will continue to offer daily dinner specials in the
dining rooms. We have recently revised our wine list and now offer some of California’s most
prominent wineries. Please let me know if we do not carry your favorite wine and we will
make an effort to add it to our list.
Enjoy the month of September.
Sincerely,
Joe

Irrigation Supply And The Rest Of The Year
This article is being written after a welcome pattern of cooler temperatures and a few rain events so
I apologize if I sound a bit too optimistic. The current water supply at #9 is similar to where we
have been for the better part of the summer with 2 very important exceptions. We have exhausted
the inventory in the upper pond at #1 and we are very close to using all of the water in the pond at
#18. The best estimate for #18 is roughly 1.5 million gallons. Although this sounds like a lot, it can
be used rather quickly. That being said, we still have all of the water in #8 and our wells, when used
properly, will provide some recharge.
What Happens Next?
As we approach the fall season we should see temperatures start to moderate and that will reduce
heat stress which in turn reduces the need to irrigate as much. This alone saves a considerable
amount of water. The flip side to this is the need to perform seasonal aeration and overseeding of
the golf course. The end result will be the need to irrigate the seed and seedlings after they emerge.
Hopefully (and I won’t hold my breath) we will get enough rain to help us along during this period.
When Will The Ponds Be Full Again?
The million dollar question. Realistically, without a tropical event, the ponds should be full before
the end of the year. In June of 2006, we experienced several days of very heavy rain that produced
about 9 inches of rain at Cattail. This caused the pond at #9 to overflow. Granted, the pond wasn’t
as low as it is now but it was pretty close. If we get normal rains for the rest of the year we should
have no problems but even without rain, we will be full for sure going into next season, guaranteed.
Thanks again for the extreme patience you have shown in dealing with all of the hand watering and
the less than perfect golf course. We look forward to better weather and a great fall.
Sincerely,
The Green Staff

with Regards to Handicaps
An essential element of the USGA Handicap System is the requirement that each golf
club issue USGA Handicap Indexes. A Handicap Committee is appointed to ensure
the integrity of the handicaps it issues. This committee shall make certain that the
members comply with the USGA Handicap System.
Please remember to post all of those scores from your travels this summer. If it
helps, you need assistance please call us in the Golf Shop. Also remember you can

Cross Court By Tennis Professional - Joe Mattingly
A very busy summer season is coming to a close. Some of the highlights include: Adult Cattail teams
representing the Club at a local, State and sectional level; a Junior program that has Juniors
representing the Club on a National level; a new Junior Team Tennis program that has had over 100
Juniors participating; a very active Adult social program, as well as over 250 kids attending our Junior
Camp program. WOW, what a fantastic summer! I would like to give a special thanks to all of the tennis
staff that has made the 2007 Tennis program such a huge success. Great Job!
The fall season will kick-off with a dynamic Women’s Combo season, under the direction of Julie
Seanez. Several teams will compete for a chance to play for the State Championships to be held at
Cattail Creek the weekend of October 12th. We will host a Men’s Combo Tournament, which will also
allow the winners to compete at the State Championships.
The Friday AM and PM Fun-in-the-Sun will continue throughout the fall season. Please remember to
sign up in advance at the pro shop. We will also offer special dinner selections after the evening mixed
doubles program; we will keep you posted on those opportunities.
Please remember to sign up for the Adult and Junior Club Championships. The events for the tournament
will include: Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Let’s also make this year’s Member Guest a success,
with a great turn out!
The new fall catalogues have arrived for our Adidas and Nike Lines. Don’t forget that our pro shop can
usually have your order arrive by the next day. We also offer racquets, shoes, socks, and other accessories
all at our Mill River prices.
