Allan is the Managing
Director of the Toga Group
of Companies, a property
development, construction,
investment and hospitality
management group.
He graduated from the
University of NSW with
Bachelor of Commerce
and Laws degrees in 1985
and was admitted as a
Solicitor of the Supreme
Court of NSW in 1986.
Prior to Allan joining the
Toga Group where he is
responsible for the Group’s
strategy and operations,
he worked in the banking
and finance sector. He was
appointed to the Board
of JewishCare in 2006
having had strong earlier
communal involvement
with the Keren Hayesod
and the United Israel
Appeal.
Other directorships include
the Tourism and Transport
Forum (TTF) and the
Australia/Israel & Jewish
Affairs Council (AIJAC).
Allan was elected President

currently Vice-President.
Mr Breuer is a director
of companies within the
Gresham Partners group
and director of Eva Breuer
Art Dealer Pty Limited.

Born on 17/04/1974 in
Cape Town South Africa.
Lawrence is the Managing
Director and founder of
MBP Advisory Pty. Limited
- a prominent high end
Sydney firm - which he
established in 1998. Prior
to that, Lawrence spent
6 years in small and large
Chartered Accounting
firms. His client base
spans a broad range of
industries and activities
and specialises in advising
very high net worth
individuals and families,
their businesses and
commercial endeavours.
This portfolio includes
some of Australia’s
largest private and public

Born 01/01/1939 in
Romania.
Erica was born in Romania
and came to Australia with
her mother in 1948 having
survived a Concentration
Camp where she lost
her father. She came to
Sydney with the assistance
of the Jewish Welfare
Society (now JewishCare).
She is a member of
the Australian Jewish
Holocaust Survivors and
ERICA TUREK
Descendants and has
worked as a guide in the
Australian Jewish Museum.
Erica has managed
Recruitment Consultancies
both in Australia and
internationally for over four
decades, Erica strengthens
the Board with her wealth
of experience in Human
Resources management.
Ms Turek currently serves
on the Board of Scott
Recruitment Services.
She is a member of the
Australian Institute of
company directors as
well as the Recruitment
Consultant Services
Company. Erica has been a
member of the JewishCare
Board since 2003,
however, her involvement
with JewishCare dates
back to 1995/ 1996 when
she was employed as
a Development Officer
managing promotions,
public relations, fundraising
and donor relationships.

Shirli has a Bachelor of

She worked as a lawyer for

Darron holds a Bachelor

UCT.
He was one of the
founding Directors of
the network technology
company, Com Tech,
DARRON LONSTEIN
which was later sold to
the global technology
organisation, Dimension
Data. During his time at
Com Tech, Darron served
as its Technical Services
Director, responsible for
all service and support
activities as well as being
involved in the strategic
direction of the company.
Since then Darron spent
several years as Executive
Chairman of Controlled
Climate Logistics,
a logistics business
focused on warehousing
and distribution for
confectionary and allied
industries. Darron now
invests across a range of
property and equity assets
and also has a number of
private equity investments
in start-up enterprises.
Darron has worked with
JCA for many years and
has been a member of the
IT, Allocations, Planning
and Executive Committees.
DR JEFFREY
ENGELMAN
Appointed as Director on
24 November 2005.
Born 08/11/1962 in
Sydney, Australia.
Jeffrey is a
Gastroenterologist,
currently working in
private practice in both
the Eastern Suburbs and
Kogarah. He has been in

practice for over 20 years.
Jeffrey completed a higher
degree at the UNSW after
undertaking research in
London, England. He has
been actively involved in
communal work having
served on the Jewish
Board of Deputies and
being on the Holocaust
Remembrance committee
for two years.
He belongs to both South
Head Synagogue and
Maroubra Synagogue
(where his father is a Life
Vice President and Life
member) and is also a
member of the Australian
Jewish Holocaust Survivors
and Descendants,
where his father is a past
President.
DAVID MORRIS

Born 15/01/1969.
David was appointed as
the Chief Strategy Officer
at Cochlear Limited in
September 2011, having
served as President of
Cochlear Bone Anchored
since September 2005.
David joined Cochlear
Limited in December 2002
as Senior Vice President,
Business Development.
Prior to joining Cochlear
Limited, David worked with
Accenture in strategy and
operational consulting, and
DAVID MORRIS
has extensive International
and Australian experience
in the healthcare,
consumer products,
utilities and financial
services industries.
David has a Bachelor
of Business and a
Bachelor of Applied
Science from Monash
University in Melbourne,
Australia. He has also
completed the Advanced

Program at Kellogg
School of Management,
Northwestern University in
Chicago, USA.
David was the Mission
Leader for the Australian
delegation to BioMed and
MEDinISRAEL 2013, a
showcase of some of the
most innovative solutions in
Life Sciences and Medical
Technology from Israel and
all over the world.
David was the Chairman
of the Medical Devices
Industry Action Agenda
from 2005 to 2008. The
Medical Devices Industry
Action Agenda was an
initiative of the Australian
Government (Department
on Industry, Tourism
and Resources) aimed
at maximizing the future
growth and development
of the Medical Device
Industry in Australia.

PRESIDENT’S
REPORT
It is my pleasure to present the 2013-2014 Annual
Report. JewishCare, now in its 78th year remains
in a healthy financial position, continuing to
provide substantial support and help to a wide
range of people in need within our community.
The environment in which JewishCare operates is
undergoing unprecedented change. This is mainly
as a result of changes to government funding which
accounts for almost 35% of our total funds. Over time
these funds will be given to the service users or clients
themselves who will then choose how and where to
spend this funding. JewishCare will increasingly focus
on our aim to be the “provider of choice” continuing to
ensure high levels of service to retain our current clients
as well as attract new clients on a fee for service basis.
These changes are already being implemented in the
provision of aged care and will soon begin to impact on
disability (including mental health) services via the much
anticipated National Disability Insurance Scheme. The
experience of countries especially UK that have already
been through a similar process suggests that a few
years down the track, the landscape of service providers
may well look very different.
JewishCare is well prepared for these challenges and
considerable resources have already been allocated
to ensure that JewishCare continues to be the major
service provider in our community and the safety net
for those in need of assistance. A critical element of
this involves planning to ensure that the resources of
JewishCare are allocated to meet anticipated community
needs.
Our latest five year Strategic Plan (2014-2018) has been
completed by the highly acclaimed Social Ventures
Australia. It follows the fully implemented 2008 -2013
Strategic Plan carried out by the same organisation
which demonstrated the power of strategic planning
to respond to both internal and external catalysts for
change.
An important part of this process was ensuring
maximum buy-in from all levels of the organisation. This
was achieved by a series of workshops plus one on one
interviews with senior managers and Board members.
The result was 12 clear goals with corresponding KPIs
categorised into four main areas.

Funding: Be financially stable and sustainable
Infrastructure: Have the systems to support a person
centred approach
Our exceptional work in the area of inclusion for people
with a disability was recently acknowledged by The
Ruderman Foundation of USA who awarded The Big
Brother Big Sister program a $US50,000 prize and
promoted our excellence throughout the Jewish world.
We continued to work with many other communal
organisations, particularly with B’Nai B’rith Retirement
Village and The Wolper Jewish Hospital with whom we
are respectively collaborating to maximise support for
people with mental health issues and those needing
bereavement counselling.
As a community we are indeed very fortunate in so
many ways, not the least being able to call on the skills
and commitment of so many talented people to help
guide the organisation into the future. It is arguable that
never has this been more important. During the year
we welcomed a new Board Member to the already
impressive Board of JewishCare. The strategic skills
of David Morris who was recently appointed as the
Chief Strategy Officer at Cochlear Limited will no doubt
be of great benefit to JewishCare. I also would like to
acknowledge the great contribution that Tony Breuer
and Erica Turek have made to the Board. They have
decided not to seek re-election this year and their
combined 25 years of experience will be greatly missed.
I would like to also thank the 500 other volunteers who
have made such a difference to the lives of our clients.
Without their dedication JewishCare would not be able
to provide the level of support that it has been able to.
I wish to thank all our funders, including all levels
of Government, Jewish Communal Appeal, The
Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany
plus the many generous individuals and organisations
who supported us through this year.
All our success is due to the skill of our team of 200
people and our wonderful volunteers. Led by CEO
Claire Vernon they have continued to deliver high
quality services with a level of care, professionalism and
passion that should make our community proud.

other specific services to Jewish clients in need

REPORT
2014 was another successful year for JewishCare.
to disadvantaged community members.
During the financial year JewishCare continued to
cement its position as a stable, financially secure
organisation in the Jewish community. JewishCare’s
annual operating surplus was $478,638, which
represents an increase of more than $500,000 as
compared to the operating shortfall of $39,637 in
2012-13. Supporting this result, JewishCare benefitted
from exchange rate movements and additional
government and claims conference funding which are
not expected to be recurring. Whilst this strong surplus
is non recurring, it has allowed JewishCare to reduce
its Jewish Communal Appeal allocation request in
respect of the 2015 financial year by a one off amount of
$600,000.
We received $220,460 from the Chai Foundation during
this financial year.
In accordance with undertakings made during the
Capital Appeal and following the ATO granting its
consent during the year, JewishCare transferred a
one-off amount of $3,800,000 to the JewishCare
Foundation Trust. As a result, the statutory result,
after allowing for the $3,800,000 transfer and asset
impairments reflects as a shortfall of $3,534,339. There
has been no significant change in activities, nor any
material change in the revenue or expenditure structure
during the financial year.
These measures together, serve to enhance both the
future stability of JewishCare as an organisation, and the
wider Sydney Jewish community.
SOURCES OF REVENUE
Government funding remained the largest source of
income for JewishCare, representing approximately
one-third of the organisation’s revenue. Funding sources
include NSW Department of Family and Community
Services Ageing, Disability and Home Care (ADHC),
Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing and
Commonwealth Department of Families, Community
Services and Indigenous Affairs.
JewishCare is the largest recipient of Jewish Communal
Appeal (JCA) grants. JCA funds represented
approximately 20% of the annual revenue. JewishCare
has continued to work with the JCA on maintaining
transparent and astute financial controls.
The Conference on Jewish Material Claims against
Germany (Claims Conference) provided 17% of
JewishCare’s annual income. The funds allow us to
provide direct services supporting holocaust survivors.
Two Public Ancillary Funds have been established to
support JewishCare - JewishCare Foundation Trust
and JewishCare Mental Health Foundation Trust. Their
combined contribution of $1,050,000 supports services

JewishCare appreciates the financial support of these
organisations, without which our important work would
not be possible.
JewishCare’s earned income during the year was
approximately $1.55 million. This is a composite of client
fees, interest and sales revenue. In addition, donations,
grants and endowments amounted to approximately
$0.76 million.
EXPENDITURE
Total operational expenditure in the financial year
was $10,577,661. This is marginally higher than the
$10,391,237 for the 2012-13 financial year. This year
shows a significant reduction in publicity, advertising
and related expenditure. Salary and related payments
remains the largest expenditure category, representing
some 80% of JewishCare’s operating budget. Overall
staff numbers increased by 4% during the year and the
total staffing cost was 6% higher than in 2012-13.
TRANSFER OF FUNDS
JewishCare transferred $3,800,000 to the JewishCare
Foundation Trust. This follows undertakings made
as part of the 2010 Capital Appeal during which
JewishCare made a commitment that monies raised
which were in excess of the funds required to complete
the new building would be provided to the JewishCare
Foundation trust to build corpus for the future.
Following construction of the building and disposal of
surplus properties, the JewishCare Board identified
$3,800,000 which was in excess of the requirement to
build our Sabre Street Headquarters.
To ensure that any one-off transfer by JewishCare to
the JewishCare Foundation Trust, a Public Ancillary
Fund, was handled correctly, and in accordance with
legal and taxation requirements, specialist tax advisors,
Greenwood & Freehills, as well as Clayton Uts Solicitors
were engaged to assist in this regard. All necessary
changes and requirements were approved by the
Australian Taxation Office and Australian Charities and
Not-for-profit Commission. The JewishCare Board
approved this transfer on 28 May 2014.
JewishCare is grateful to Greenwood Freehills and
Clayton Utz for providing their assistance in this regard
on a pro-bono basis.
ASSETS
Following the transfer of funds to JewishCare
Foundation Trust, the total assets of JewishCare
have decreased from approximately $16.5 million last

year to approximately $13.5 million at 30th June 2014.
The net assets of JewishCare as at 30 June 2014 were
$11,001,082.
LIABILITIES
Employment-related entitlements represents about half of
JewishCare liabilities. Trade and other payables account
for approximately $665,000 which is around 6% of annual
turnover – a good indication of financial health.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
Board and management decisions are supported by
the timely reporting received from JewishCare’s Finance
and Administration team. The Board is pleased with the
senior and program managers’ skills in the day-to-day
operations as well their contribution to the budgeting
process. JewishCare’s management team has continued
to demonstrate a commitment to quality services to clients
while running a tight, well planned and executed operation.

BURGER CENTRE
The Burger Centre aged day care facility is operated by Sir
Moses Montefiore Home and JewishCare in partnership,
holding equal rights in the registered company - The Burger
Centre Pty Ltd.
No financial support was provided to The Burger Centre
during 2013-14, but $100,000 has been approved for
the 2014-15 financial year. JewishCare recorded 50%
of the 2013-14 operational deficit of $19,494 as well as
accounting for a $200,000 impairment of the investment
carrying value in line with the requirements of Australian
Accounting Standards.
I would like to express our thanks to the auditors, Deloitte
Private, as well as to the Senior Managers and the Finance
and Administration team at JewishCare for their continued
support of the Board and management of the organisation.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE
OFFICER’S REPORT
The development of the new five year strategic
plan was a significant achievement during the
year. As mentioned in The President’s Report
JewishCare is now well placed to respond to
government reforms as we build on our strengths
which I believe are our people, our ability to
be flexible and responsive and our strong
governance.

Youth Mentoring program remains one option, the youth
caseworkers can also provide information, support and
referrals. In addition we established a Jewish Youth
Interagency to bring together all the Jewish community
groups working with young people. The aim is to share
information and create synergies and joint projects
where appropriate.
The first is about our staff which are our most valuable
resource. The services and supports we offer the
community and in particular people in need are the
skills and experience of our staff. If you think of it in a
transactional sense, the staff are our product. To gauge
how focussed and satisfied our staff are with their work
JewishCare uses an external consultancy the Voice
Project to conduct a Staff Climate Survey every three
years. The most recent was in December 2013 and the
results were outstanding. JewishCare benchmarked very
favourably against similar organisations on virtually all
parameters. Importantly the latest survey showed many
substantial improvement since the 2010 survey. This
suggests that JewishCare is a great place to work and
this translates into high quality caring services being
provided to the community.
Good governance is a critical strength for any
organisation or business, and the not for profit sector
is no different. An example of our good governance
was the visit of auditors from the Claims Conference in
New York to review our processes and services which
they fund for Holocaust survivors. They were with us
for a week in November 2013 and examined our client
files, our policies and visited a number of clients. Their
audit was thorough as it is extremely important to
demonstrate the efficient and effective use of funds.
The second strength is our ability to be flexible and
responsive and this was demonstrated during the last
twelve months with the changes to our support to young
people. While our Big Brother Big Sister program is
probably one of our best known services, this provides
only one option for young people aged 8 to 13 years
who may be struggling with personal issues. We knew
that an increasing number of young people are being
referred to us for support and the awareness of mental
health issues in adolescence is getting increased
exposure. Our response has been to establish a Youth
Services team which take a holistic approach. While the
As we move into new and exciting times I am confident
that the staff at JewishCare will continue to respond
to new challenges and be committed to serving the
community. As always our volunteers continue to give
us the opportunity to expand the ways we assist people
and this is greatly appreciated.
New directions require strong leadership and vision and
Allan Vidor and the Board are steering JewishCare with
fresh strategy and provide solid guidance on working
within the community.

THE TWO OF US
Allan Vidor is Managing Director of the Toga
Group of Companies, an international property
investment and hospitality management company.
He is the father of four children and has been
President of JewishCare since 2011.
Claire Vernon originally qualified and worked as a social
worker and has held senior managerial positions in
government departments. She is a mother of three and
has been CEO of JewishCare since 2007.
CLAIRE
I was working in the NSW Department of Ageing
Disability and Home Care for about 3 years and was
contacted by a recruitment company to see if I would be
interested in applying for the job of CEO for JewishCare.
I am not Jewish and at first wondered if that would pose
any problems but I remember being impressed by how
thorough the recruitment process was including meeting
with a number of Directors. As this process progressed
I was convinced the role would be a great fit or me. To
date this has certainly been the case.
I remember reading Allan’s bio and being surprised
that someone running an international business also
found time to be on a voluntary board. At my first Board
meeting I remember him being very clear about setting
my top ten priorities and having performance measures
in place to track progress against them. This is exactly
the way I like to operate.
I meet with Allan for about an hour most Friday
mornings, we also exchange emails and talk on the
phone as needed. Allan is a great boss and we have
a very honest and open relationship. I think we are a
good team. He together with the other Directors sets
strategy and then they let me get on with running the
organisation.
Our greatest accomplishment to date has been helping
to change the culture of the organisation which will be
critical as the environment in which we operate changes
in the future.

CLAIRE
ALLAN
I had been on the Board of JewishCare since 2006 and
there was a need to recruit a new high calibre CEO to
lead the team and guide the organisation through new
strategy. I was on the selection panel and met with a
number of candidates. I remember meeting Claire at
the offices of our recruitment consultant in the city.
She impressed us all with her professional background
and experience which we felt would align well with
JewishCare’s strategy and objectives. She had the
appropriate balance of “head” and “heart” needed to
guide an organisation like JewishCare. Although the
organisation has traditionally had a Jewish CEO all on
the selection committee agreed that Claire would be
ideal. This has proven to be the case and I have been
impressed with how quickly she got to understand the
workings and nuances of our close knit community
and how she became highly respected throughout
community. I have even been amazed at her ability to
pick up and intersperse the Yiddish and Hebrew terms
that we have grown up with.
I would characterize our relationship as one of great
respect. We have come to appreciate each other’s styles
and strengths. We have developed a strong working
relationship and deal with many serious issues however
we still allow ourselves to have a sense of humour.
Apart from reading we also share an interest in the
outdoors and travel. Although I do travel a lot, especially
for work I am impressed at the highly physical holidays
that Claire seems to favour.
I believe to date our major accomplishments have been
initiating the necessary changes to meet the challenges
of the altered government funding environment whilst
always ensuring the imperative of JewishCare meeting
its mandate of helping those in need. We have also
succeeded in strengthening the relationships with other
Jewish and broader community organisations.
Outside of work we are both parents and as that is
the biggest club in the world we sometimes touch
base about children. We are also avid readers and
Allan always has some great recommendations. He
suggested that I read The Pity of it All by Amos Elon
before I went on the ‘March of the Living’ and it gave
me a much deeper understanding of the history of Jews
living in Germany leading up to 1939. It stayed with me
as I walked the streets of Berlin.

RITA AND
CATHERINE
Rita* is 35 years old and migrated to Australia with
her husband and 8 year old son in 2009. The rest
of her family still live in Russia. Her relationship
with her husband was by her admission not good,
but she didn’t know where to turn for help. Action
on one suggestion changed her life.
I am so glad that I made and kept that appointment with
Catherine 8 months ago.
Catherine* was born in Sydney and attained a Masters
in Applied Counselling and Psychotherapy at JNI. She
completed specialist domestic violence courses and is
on the roster at Waverley court to support women who
find themselves in Domestic Violence (DV) situations.
She is also a trained facilitator of an in-school DV and
Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness program
called the LoveBites Program. She has been working
with JewishCare since 2012.
CATHERINE
My first impressions of Rita was of someone who felt
isolated and scared. She was very timid and quiet when
we first met. She was reluctant to say much, had no
support and more than anything needed someone who
could understand her issues and hear her.
RITA
My early thoughts when arriving here were that it is a
beautiful country but it is difficult to be a migrant when
you don’t speak the local language. My accent makes
it difficult for some people to understand and this
contributed to my overall feelings of not being able to
communicate effectively.
I was having problems with my marriage and I was very
unhappy. Following the advice of my GP I was referred
to JewishCare and met with Catherine at Saber Street.
I must admit I found it very hard to make and attend
this appointment. I was scared my husband would find
out and be angry with me and take it out on our son.
Maintaining confidentiality is so important in my situation.
While I am happy to tell my story I insisted that I would
not be able to identified through the publication of this
article.
I am a long way from my original home but with
Catherines’s help I will make a new home here where I
will be happy.
She also needed to understand that what has
happening to her classified as domestic violence. She
came from a very controlling family and married a very
controlling and aggressive man. As is often the case in
such situations, Rita thought when something was not
right it was her fault. As we have worked together she
has certainly learned a lot. It has been a revelation to her.
There were many practical issues to address. Her
husband never gave her enough money to live on so
we initially provided some modest short term financial
support and meals. I also endeavored to alleviate some
of the stress about her son who was not coping well
by engaging him in JewishCare’s Big Brother Big Sister
program and this has already had a very beneficial
impact on his life. Rita can tell the difference and he so
looks forward to these fortnightly meetings with his Big
Brother. I am in the process of applying for transitional
housing for Rita and her son as well as ensuring she will

no-one outside would ever know about it. She made
me appreciate that what my son and myself were
experiencing was domestic violence and there are
options available, in this country we don’t have to live
with this.
My impressions of Catherine have not changed over the
eight months that I have been working with her. She is a
very caring person and JewishCare is so well resourced
and connected. She has helped me understand what
was happening and how wrong it was. It is quite scary
but step by step Catherine is helping me plan my
future. Accommodation, schooling for my son and work
options for me, Centrelink payments and above all ways
to maintain our safety as we move forward.

THE TWO OF US
Chris Heaven has been the Facilities and
Administration Manager at JewishCare for two
years. As well as managing the maintenance of
physical assets he also manages reception and the
administration assistance for Fischl House.
Greg Seligman has worked and volunteered on
and off since 2002. He now works as a employee
at Print35 Design Studio as well as undertaking
regular administrative tasks
CHRIS
I welcomed the idea of having an extra resource to help
with various administrative tasks. When I first met with
Greg I was immediately impressed with his knowledge
of office admin, especially matters relating to mailing and
also his willingness to learn. I was surprised that Greg is
older than me, he looks very young.
As time progressed it became clear that he had a great
attention to detail and is a very reliable person. On more
than one occasion he has actually spotted things that
others had overlooked.
CHRIS AND GREG
GREG
I have done a lot of volunteering in the community over
many years but getting the job at Print35 was something
I have wanted for a long time. Having the opportunity
to be involved with other tasks around the JewishCare
office was a bonus.
Apart from my work at Print35 I also like taking the mail
around the office and talking to the staff who are always
friendly to me. Walking to and from the Post Office and
doing other jobs is also good and I know it helps out
JewishCare.
I like Chris and we have common interests especially
sports and cars.
He is also a very good boss and gives me clear
instructions. He is a really good guy and sometimes we
joke around a bit which is fun. Sometimes we joke that I
am older than him so I should be his boss.
We actually share many common interests including
movies and TV shows. I love cars and we both watch
and discuss ‘Fast and Loud’ and ‘Top Gear’. He has a
great knowledge of sport especially soccer, rugby and
cricket and engages with staff about the latest sporting
events.
We also both like sushi and had lunch together at the
local sushi train.
Greg is a very sociable person who is well liked within
the organisation and is certainly a valuable asset.

I admire Rita in so many ways. She has taken such a
huge step of emigrating to Australia which has so many
challenges associated with it even when everything
is going well. She is a very different person to the
one I encountered some 8 months ago. She is more
empowered and is now quite confident about the future

prospects for herself and her son. Remarkably this
confidence has had a marked impact on her English
language skills and she can now express herself in
any situation. I know that is something that she is very
pleased about.

MARTA AND SHAILA
Marta was born in Budapest and came to Sydney
in 1951. She was a well known singer under
the name of Marta Kuty. She married renowned
musician George Pikler in 1972, he died at the age
of 101 in 2011.
Shaila Sattar was born in Bangladesh, educated in India
and came to Australia in 1994 where she completed her
education. She started working at JewishCare in 2007
where she is the Assistant manager of Home Support in
the Community Aged Care Team. She is married with a
two years old daughter.
MARTA
I was blessed with a coloratura soprano voice and from
a very early age I devoted my life to music. I sang opera
and popular music all over Australia and also travelled to
China, Singapore.
I had two children from my first marriage and I then
had a wonderful 39 year marriage to George who
was a remarkable musician being a master of many
instruments, especially clarinet and piano. He was
always my favourite accompanist. He was much older
than me and I was his carer from 2008. JewishCare was
always so nice to him, I remember we were so touched
when they organised a letter from the Hungarian
ambassador acknowledging his musical contribution to
Hungary.
SHAILA
From the first time I met Marta I know that she was
a special person, we had an immediate connection.
She was very open about her feelings and especially
about her wonderful relationship with George who was
a highly renowned musician and certainly her favourite
accompanist. I remember going to their house and only
being allowed to peek into the front room where all the
musical instruments were kept. That room seemed
to have a magical quality about it. When I first heard
Marta singing on her tape recorder her emotions were
so transparent and I could only imagine how much she
missed being able to express herself musically.
I am confident that we have been able to help her in
many ways. Initially she had a Hungarian Gold Train
care package which later changed to a Tikvah package.
These enabled her to have six hours a week of help
around the house as well as transport to and from Club
50 which helped her immeasurably, as did attending The
Burger Centre. I know she misses her previous life in
so many ways but she is always very positive and gets
on well with all of the care workers, they all speak very
highly of Marta.
Her children visit her a lot and are very caring. I know
they are happy that their mother is being looked after in
the best possible way.
I had to stop singing after a thyroid operation and that
left a huge void in my life and when I lost George I was
very lonely. In a way I thought that my dedication to my
music had stopped me making friends and having other
interest. I was very lucky that I called JewishCare and
then two lovely ladies Zimra and Shaila came to see
me. I remember they were both very sympathetic and
insightful. Shaila became my case manager and her
help has made such a difference to my life. I started
attending Club50 and having somewhere to go play
bridge and have a chat which was great. The staff
there, Val and Leah were so welcoming, it is like I had
known them for years. Due to a problem with my foot I
haven’t been back for a while but they keep calling me,
as does my bridge partner and I can’t wait to get back.
The help I get from JewishCare is invaluable, it helps
me to stay at home and all the care workers are just so
competent and caring.

to care for our community.
Making a bequest to JewishCare is the ultimate gift
you can make to our organisation. Large or small,
bequests ensures that we are able to provide a safety
net and other specific services for those in need.
It is pleasing to report that during last financial year a
steady stream of bequests were made to JewishCare
from clients who had received ongoing support from
us over many years. Two clients informed me that
although they were now going into permanent care
and no longer required our assistance, we had been
the mainstay of the last years in their homes. They
both mentioned that their bequest will recognise “the
unwavering help provided by JewishCare over such a
long time.”
With the acknowledgment of all the services we
provide, most the community know of someone who
is benefitting from our support. During the last financial
year JewishCare received proceeds of numerous
bequests from a broad spectrum of the community
including those with large families. In our traditional
way of generous giving, our community acknowledges,
through bequests, our care for our community.
Many community members have celebrated their
birthdays and anniversaries by sharing their special
days with JewishCare. Donations made in their names
through their philanthropic requests for friends and
family to give their gifts to our organisation are greatly
appreciated. These moneys go towards caring for
JewishCare clients - towards making lives a little better.
We also thank all donors for their generosity and for
their acknowledgment of the value that our organisation
provides.

Mental Health Foundation which provides support for
about 200 clients and their families.
