Our staff and volunteers have spent a lot of time planning a special day
for you. We hope you enjoy the experience, meet new friends, and are
inspired by the exciting things your future can hold.
As you see on the news every day, young people need to learn financial
responsibility and how to prepare for their futures. In just a few years,
you will be independent citizens in our communities, workers in our
companies, and leaders in our government. You have a bright future
ahead of you, all you need to do is step up and start preparing!

Sherry Christian
Known to family and friends as the consummate "morning person," Sherry Christian is
the natural choice for anchoring CBS 21 News This Morning.
Sherry joined CBS 21 in July of 2002. Before her employment with CBS 21, Sherry
held positions at WWJ-TV in Detroit, WMAR-TV in Baltimore, WPDE-TV in Florence,
South Carolina and WTXL-TV in Tallahassee, Florida.
Sherry says she was primed for a career in television news by her father's military
career. Growing up she lived in many different cities including Manilla, Philippines.
During her career in television broadcasting, Sherry has earned numerous awards for
reporting excellence and community service. She has served on the boards of many
civic organizations including Goodwill Industries, Girl Scouts, March of Dimes, United
Way and the Harrisburg Area Autism Society.
Sherry also finds time to participate in professional organizations including the
National Association of Black Journalists and National Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences and is a member of the Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Harrisburg.
An avid sports fan, Sherry enjoys watching Major League Baseball games, professional
and college football and basketball. And she doesn't mind bragging about "playing
a mean game of softball" herself. Other hobbies include public speaking, and
photography.
Sherry holds a Bachelor's degree in Telecommunication from the University of Florida,
Gainesville. Sherry lives in the Harrisburg area with her husband Jeremy and their
daughters.
Jennifer Delaye
Jennifer Delaye is an architect of innovation.
As a serial entrepreneur and owner of multiple award-winning
hospitality operations in the Central Pennsylvania region,
Delaye attributes her success to building talented teams that
embrace a client and community-first approach.
For almost three decades, Delaye continues to transform the
services of her hospitality empire/domain through evolution
propelled by innovation. This innate sense to innovate began
when her life path shifted from a graduate degree in
Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison to
the foodservice industry. Delaye began her early career
operating the food concessions of Harrisburg’s City Island
with her two siblings. Soon after, she opened her first
restaurant in downtown Harrisburg, which swiftly opened
her interest into the catering and events realm in 1990.
Through the years, Delaye’s powerful business sense showed her that catering only wouldn’t
withstand the market and the region was aching for a different experience. Innovation was
the only solution. In 2007, the formerly known JDK Catering Inc. evolved into The JDK Group,
a full-service event production firm. Her catering operation expanded to now offer multiple
divisions including floral and event design services, specialty event rentals, venue management,
and wedding planning. Through these expanded services, she could now offer the region fullyproduced events worth celebrating and unforgettable experiences the region deserved. Her
passion for people and servicing them through hospitality services did not end there.
Delaye’s entrepreneurial spirit sparked another opportunity for innovation in 2012. She refused to
accept the old-age traditions associated with the hotel and restaurant industry by forming a new
sister company, Métalaye Hospitality. Through this operation, she manages a new meeting and events
division for the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center along with two restaurant concepts new to the
Harrisburg region - The Garlic Poet and Grain + Verse Bottlehouse. By challenging the status quo,
Delaye’s successes of these operations place her as a leader in multiple factions of hospitality.
As a highly integrated CEO of a hospitality empire and mother of four, Delaye finds it imperative
that she lives and breathes by her mantra of, “Think globally, act locally.” She has always been a
proponent for giving back to the community and event industry through leading by example. She
sits on the United Way of the Capital Region’s Board of Directors and recently completed her term
as Campaign Chair for United Way of the Capital Region -helping to exceed the campaign’s goal of
over $11.2 million. In addition to this influence, she has also served as President of the International
Caterers Association, serves on the Junior Achievement Regional Council, and is a board member on
the Central Penn College Board of Trustees.
Delaye’s commitment to her community and constant focus on innovation has garnered local and
international recognition. In 2014, Delaye was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year by the Harrisburg
Chamber and CREDC and has previously been named Pennsylvania’s “50 Best Women in Business.”
Locally, Harrisburg Magazine has recognized Delaye and The JDK Group as the region’s best
caterer for over 12 years. Susquehanna Style has recognized JDK as best caterer for their Best
of Harrisburg Awards and awarded The Garlic Poet a Silver Spoon Award in 2015.
To garner these accomplishments, it is evident that Delaye chooses to live her life by leading
through innovation. Through her inspirational spirit paired with her talented teams of people
powered by purpose, she continues to forge the future of the hospitality industry.
Harriet Turk
For more than 20 years, Harriet has been
inspiring teens and adults to discover
their true identities and pursue a life
of substance.
She has worked as a probation officer,
youth programs coordinator, flight
attendant, pharmaceutical sales rep,
college-level instructor, and nationallyknown professional speaker, trainer, and
consultant. Harriet is also a mom, friend,
sister, and daughter. When she was a
teen, Harriet struggled with her own
identity crisis. She fell into the trap of
feeling like she had to be perfect. This
led to an eating disorder that took years
to overcome.
Harriet’s life experiences have taught
her that success and happiness come from
celebrating who you are and pursuing a life
that honors your strengths and abilities.
As a parent and a professional, Harriet
knows that life can be challenging and
joyful. She relates to the hopeless journey
to be superwoman that so many of us
travel. She also knows that no matter how
hard we try, we can never be superwoman.
Harriet helps us navigate life so we don’t
feel hopeless, but instead we feel strong,
happy and fulfilled.

READING YOUR PAY STUB!

Gross income- The Total amount of income from your wages or salary before payroll deductions.
(The number of hours you work multiplied by your hourly rate.) Ex: If you work 10 hrs at $7 an
hour, your gross income will be $70. This is the amount before payroll deductions.
Payroll Deductions- The amounts subtracted by gross income, which results in your net income.
These deductions are usually taxes, but as you grow older you’ll find that there are other deductions
as well, such as health insurance and retirement savings. If you want to see what deductions can
really do to a full-time employee’s paycheck, ask your Mom or Dad to show you their pay stub.
Taxes- For most working people, taxes are the biggest deduction. Taxes are fees placed on income,
property, or goods to support governmental programs. These programs may be at a local, state or
federal level. Laws require deductions for taxes.
Generally, there are four common payroll deductions. They are federal income tax, sometimes state
income tax, Social Security tax (FICA) and Medicare tax. If you have your own business, you
must also pay a self-employment tax. These taxes pay for a variety of services we all appreciate
and use, like the armed services, road maintenance, and retirement income for the elderly.
Federal Income Tax- A fee for the support of federal government programs and is a payroll deduction collected by the employer each pay period and paid to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Most workers have federal income taxes deducted from their gross income.
State Income Tax- This is also subtracted from your paycheck. It is a fee collected by your employer and paid to the state revenue department to support state programs. The same process applies to the state income tax applies to the federal income tax.
To pay for retirement and other social insurance needs, the Federal Insurance Contributions Act
(FICA) was established:
Social Security tax­- Under FICA, it is collected from most employees to fund this federal program which provides old-age, survivors, and disability insurance.
Medicare tax-Also under FICA, it is collected from employees to fund the hospital insurance provided under this system. These amounts are a set tax rate subtracted each pay period from the employee’s wages. These payments are sent on behalf of the employee, with a matching amount from
the employer to the Social Security Administration.
Net Income-The amount the results when you subtract deductions from your paycheck aka “Takehome pay”. It’s the amount you receive when you cash your check or deposit it. It’s the amount
you have available to spend. It’s also a good starting point for creating a budget.
