Summertime in Breckenridge has inspired many visitors to stick around awhile longer—some eventually becoming local residents.
Breckenridge’s summer season brings lush green
mountainsides covered in brilliant wildflowers, rivers and
streams rushing with cool, clear water, and miles of trails
to be explored. Breckenridge’s dry, 70-degree daytime

ABOUT 150 YEARS AGO.
history
Breckenridge’s rich history is full of gold finds and
mining, exploration and adventure, brothels and
saloons, booms and busts. Founded in 1859 by a
small group of prospectors, the town’s Gold Rush
brought settlers in droves seeking their fortune. The
town experienced a revival in 1961 when it entered
a “white gold” boom with the opening of the Breckenridge Ski Area on Peak 8.
The town boasts one of the largest historic
districts in the state of Colorado, with 250 structures
on the National Register of Historic Places.
With a collection of mine sites, museums, guided
walks and historic capital improvements projects
underway, there are many ways for you to explore
and experience the history of our town.

Any mining town worth
mentioning has a tale of
the “big strike.” In
1887, Tom Groves
discovered what is
believed to be the largest
piece of gold ever found
in the state of
Colorado in Breckenridge. Tom walked into
town cradling the 13.5
lb. blanked-wrapped
bundle in his arms and it
was appropriately named
“Tom’s Baby.” Three
days later the nugget was
sent to Denver via train,
and then it disappeared
for 85 years.
In 1972 the Colorado
State Historical Museum
examined gold specimens
that had been deposited
in a Denver bank in
1926; Tom’s Baby was
found but over 5 lbs are
still missing.

Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships
Snowflake Challenge, December
Visitors and locals alike are invited to experience the origins of snow
sculpting in Breckenridge through a spontaneous eruption of snow
art on the streets. This grass-roots public art forum is open to
anyone who wants to try their hand at sculpting snow. Sculptures
will be on display along Main Street through the holidays.

Each year, teams from around the globe descend on Breckenridge to
hand carve 20-ton blocks of snow into beautiful works of art. This
event is a family favorite chosen by USA Today as one of the top 10

Dew Tour comes to Breck for its half-pipe and slope-style

Kingdom Days, June 18 & 19
Breckenridge’s annual heritage celebration, this
event offers a robust line-up of events and activities
including historic mine tours, museum exhibits,
gun fights, live music, old time arts and crafts,
storytelling, historic hikes, children’s activities and
the annual Outhouse Races as seen on MSNBC’s
Countdown with Keith Olbermann.
Independence Day Celebration, July 2 – 4
Breckenridge’s Independence Day is filled with
patriotic celebrations including concerts and
activities for all ages. The weekend includes a
colorful Independence Day Celebration on July 4.
A 10K trail race fires up Independence Day
morning and the “Firecracker 50” bike race kicks
off the Main Street parade followed by various
activities and music throughout town. End the
night with the National Repertory Orchestra as
they perform a FREE mountain patriotic concert
followed by an extraordinary fireworks display
(weather permitting).
Breck Bike Week, July 5 – 8
Breck Bike Week offers guided group rides; bike-in
movie nights; nutrition; fitness and open space best
practices lectures; bike fits; children’s races; Tour de
France viewing parties; high-end bike demos and

Alpine Skiing/Snowboarding: With 3,398 feet of vertical, 2,358
acres of varied terrain, 155 trails and a single trail that measures in at
3.5 miles/5.6 km (Four O’Clock) you’ll need at least one full day to
explore Breckenridge Ski Resort. Here are a few highlights to
maximize your time: for quick access ride the BreckConnect
Gondola to Peaks 7 and 8 from town; if you’re an intermediate skier
or above, head straight for the Imperial Express SuperChair—the
highest chairlift in North America (12,998 ft. summit); take a
spin through Freeway Terrain Park and check out one of the best,
and biggest, freeride parks and pipes in the U.S. (note: you don’t
have to hit the features, you can ski or ride by and do a little
“window shopping”).
Nordic Skiing/Snowshoeing: Breckenridge boasts two Nordic
ski areas that feature groomed track and trail: The Gold Run
Nordic Center on Ski Hill Road near the base of Peak 8; the
Breckenridge Nordic Center at the Breckenridge Golf Course.
Both offer spectacular scenery, rental equipment and miles of skiing
and snowshoeing.
Non-Skiing Activities: Don’t miss the Carter Park sledding
hill. This is old-fashioned sledding at its finest: no tow-rope; bring

ride. Snuggle up and enjoy the ride as Percheron

adventurous? Test your hand at leading a team of
sled dogs on a 6-mile relay through the Middle
Fork of the Swan River. Follow with a custom

Hiking: Breckenridge is surrounded by a trail
network the width and breadth of which is
unsurpassed in North America. One of the most
unique aspects of this terrain is that many trails
are preexisting paths and flumes used by miners in
search of gold, so there is also history to be
explored. Hop on the Peaks Trail near the base
of Breckenridge Ski Resort’s Peak 7 and hike to
your heart’s content—you can even walk all the
way to Frisco and catch the Summit Stage bus
back to town.
Biking: Breckenridge’s interconnected mountain
bike trail system can be accessed from anywhere in
town within two minutes and leads to well over
1,000 miles of mountain biking across Summit
County. For a warm up, head up French Gulch
Road and ride the B&B Trail to Turk’s, pass the
sunken dredge boat, and divert to Side Door and
X10U8. Location and trail information can be
found on the Town’s biking trail map available at
the Welcome Center.
where to find the locals
The most obvious gathering place in town is Blue
River Plaza. It’s also the location for impromptu
summer gold panning demonstrations, bike expos
and the occasional meet-and-greet with the local
firefighters. In the winter, you’ll find snow
sculptures, the holiday tree lighting ceremony, and
pick-up snowball fights. It is also conveniently
located next door to the Breckenridge Welcome
Center. With its independent spirit, Breckenridge
also attracts all types of artists. They take advantage
of another local gathering place: the Arts District
of Breckenridge. This arts campus in the heart
of town is a wonderful place to get your feet wet
with various mediums of art: drawing, painting,
textiles, ceramics, creative writing and photography.
