uch of Wisconsin
as we know it
was formed by
glaciers many thousands of years
ago, but the Kewaskum area is
especially full of the topography
associated with glaciation. Indeed,
30,000 acres right outside our
doorstep is preserved as the Kettle
Moraine State Forest—Northern
Unit so that this unique land
may be studied and enjoyed. The
Village of Kewaskum is proud to
be known as the “Gateway to the
Kettle Moraine.”
County named for an Indian. Chief
Kewaskum of the Potawatomi
nation, reportedly lived on an
extremely high hill—known as
“Indian Hill”—in the vicinity of the
present Village of Kewaskum. As
Chief and his tribe’s medicine man,
he was regarded equally highly by
his own people and the settlers.
First People
The first inhabitants of what
would become the Village
of Kewaskum were a native
American tribe of Hopewells or
“Moundbuilders.” Their mounds
were reportedly located on what is
now known as River Hill Park.
The founders and first
European settlers were William
Barnes and his wife who arrived
in 1844. Because they settled near
a sharp bend in the Milwaukee
River that is in the current village,
the area became known as North
Bend. It wasn’t long before a name
change was suggested as North
Bend was too similar to nearby
West Bend, creating confusion for
mail delivery.
In 1849, North Bend became
the Town of Kewaskum, the
only community in Washington
Kewaskum’s first steel bridge, erected in
1885, spanned the Milwaukee River on
Main Street.
Early Days
The Town of Kewaskum flourished,
but the railroad’s arrival in 1872
ensured future prosperity. By
1876, the town had 15 stores,
3 feed mills, 9 saloons and 400
people.
The growing population soon
recognized the need for a modern
infrastructure and a decision was
made to formally incorporate. A
vote was held and in May of 1895
the area officially became the
Village of Kewaskum. The first
Village Board election and meeting
were held in June of that year.

Time Marches On
Throughout the 20th century,
Kewaskum was home to many
shops, service providers and
manufacturers. As is the natural
way of things, the lumber and
brick yards became hardware
stores, carriage shops became car
lots and the blacksmith shops
became tool and die businesses.
Through it all, the village has
grown and prospered, celebrating
its Centennial in 1995. n
This information and much more can be
found in Mark Smucker’s Kewaskum Then
and Now, which is available at the Kewaskum
Public Library.
From the collection of Mike and Judy Berger.
Because of glaciation, the
Kewaskum area has very fertile
soil. Naturally, this made
agriculture the main livelihood
in those early days, especially
spring and winter wheats, hops
and lumber. These crops’ success
led to dairying, raising hogs and
chickens, and growing vegetables
and sugar beets.
In 1919, the Kewaskum
Aluminum Co. was founded and
began producing “Kewasko”
aluminum cookware. In 1945, the
company was sold to James O.
Reigle, who eventually changed
the name to Regal Ware, Inc. The
company continues to manufacture
cookware and maintains corporate

ewaskum is now
a village of over
4,000 people
offering a classic portrait of smalltown American life. Following
trends elsewhere in Washington
County, growth in the village has
accelerated.
Kewaskum is in close proximity
to major cities, so day trips to the
village and the surrounding Kettle
Moraine area are a highlight for
our many visitors. The village is
just one hour from Milwaukee’s
Mitchell International Airport.
The village boasts many
amenities that contribute to a high
quality of life such as a fine public
library, a golf course, ski hill,
several neighborhood parks and
two major public parks. Kewaskum
also offers a variety of specialty
shops, as well as some great dining
and pubs to round out your day.
Each year our parks host a
variety of events and activities
including the Independence
Day Fireworks, multiple sports
leagues, a public swimming pool
and festivals such as Party on
the Pavement. The railroad no
longer services the village, but the
railroad bed has been transformed
into a 25-mile multiple-use trail
known as The Eisenbahn Trail.
The kindred spirit of the
community is exemplified by
the many people who dedicate
their time, talent and treasure,
including: Kewaskum Area
Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis
Club, Lion’s Club, Women’s
Club, Junior Woman’s Club,
Historical Society, Volunteer Fire
Department, Kewaskum Cares
about Kids, PTO, KHS Booster
Club and American Legion.
Educating approximately 1,900
students, the Kewaskum School
District enjoys three elementary
schools, a middle school and a high
school.
Kewaskum is also a community
of faith featuring nine vibrant
churches, which also offer events
and festivals.
This small village even enjoys
an informal relationship with the
town of Bingham, England.
It is these many wonderful
aspects of life in the village that
have drawn people here to stop,
visit and become residents.
Thank you for your interest in
our community. We hope you enjoy
your visit. If you decide to relocate
to our area we say, “Welcome to
Kewaskum—Gateway to the Kettle
Moraine.” n

he Village of
Kewaskum is proud
of its parks and of
being the “Gateway to the Kettle
Moraine State Forest.” We are
fortunate to be located close to the
Ice Age Trail and directly on the
Eisenbahn Trail. Read on to learn
more about these very special
places and the other recreational
opportunities that abound in and
around our village.
River Hill Park
The oldest park in the village,
River Hill Park lies along the
banks of the Milwaukee River.
Fishermen are often spotted
enjoying a leisurely day of fishing
along the river or off the dam,
which connects the east and west
sides of the park by a footbridge.
The Independence Day
Fireworks hosted by the Village
and the Kewaskum Fire
Department are held here, as the
river hill facing west is the perfect
spot to take in this fabulous show.
Many large, beautiful trees
make for a colorful fall and
provide an ideal backdrop for the
Historical Society’s annual Early
Farm Days.
The park offers a large
shelter and bandstand, as well
as other buildings available to
rent, including a fully-equipped
concession stand.
With playground equipment on
both sides of the river for small
children, this is truly the perfect
place to have a family reunion or
outdoor wedding or just enjoy a
“walk in the park.”
Hikers on the Ice Age Trail can see for miles from the Ridge Road trailhead.

Kewaskum Kiwanis
Community Park
Named for the organization that
was instrumental with its initial
funding, Kewaskum Kiwanis
Community Park has a 1.5 acre
sandy-bottom pool, tennis courts,
horseshoe pits, basketball court,
volleyball court, baseball diamonds
and a picnic area complete with
playground equipment for the
smaller children.
The park’s shelter, concession
stand and ball diamonds are all
available to rent making this
park ideal for even the biggest
graduation parties, family reunions
or family picnics.
Ice Age Trail
This 1,000 mile scenic trail is
entirely in Wisconsin. Our local
trailhead and parking can be found
about a mile south of the village on
Ridge Road just behind Sunburst
Ski Area. This moderately
challenging trail is connected to
the Eisenbahn Trail just south of
the village along Highway 45. Visit
www.iceagetrail.org
Eisenbahn Trail
The Eisenbahn Trail runs on the
former railroad right-of-way from
West Bend in Washington County,
to Eden in Fond du Lac County.
This easy, 25 mile multipurpose trail is paved with crushed
stone and usage restrictions are
posted. The trail can be picked up
in Kewaskum at the downtown
parking area. Visit the Kewaskum
Area Chamber of Commerce Kiosk
downtown for trail maps, railroad
and village history displays, and
business information. From there

pro shop and restaurant offer a
warm and friendly atmosphere,
great food and refreshments, and
breathtaking views from the dining
