Dear Folks,
From time to time folks ask me of the criterion involved in the selection of bishops
in the Catholic Church. Is it open to lay participation? Is it open to include the
participation of priests/deacons? Might it include comments from civil authorities?
Does it consider those recognized for their affluence and influence? The answer to
all cases is, “Yes.”
The following websites can serve to assist all of us in understanding the process of selecting a
bishop. The first website hails from the United States Conference of Bishops and offers a clear insight
on the selection of candidates to the episcopacy. The second website hails from Australia and
indicates specific questions asked of those interviewed for their recommendations of candidates to
the episcopacy. The list of questions originate in the Vatican and are most likely very similar to the
questions offered to the American counterparts.

On to the life of the parish.
May 22nd. Annual Blessing of Motorcycles, following the 12:30 Mass.
May 23rd. Fr. Moretti has lined up a training course for new altar boys. Please meet in the Church
from 7:00 to 8:30. God bless the young ones… one or two of them might be our pastors one day…
Let us pray for one another.
On May 29th, following the 12:30 Sunday Mass there will be Corpus Christi Procession outside the
front entrance of the church. Once again, Deacon Don LIBERA has the duty of making sure all is
coordinated with the Knights of Columbus, the Choir, and servers. The Feast of Corpus Christi, The
Body of Christ, is one of the beautiful days of celebration for the Catholic Church. Please join us one
and all for the Procession.
On May 30th , Memorial Day I will be happy to once again take the military veterans fly fishing. We
should have a nice time visiting one of the local lakes. We will leave the rectory at noon and return
by four o’clock. Come one come all.
Heads up and hats off to the homeschoolers. I recently sent out a letter acknowledging the new
leadership in the homeschool group. E-Mails went out to all the members announcing Mrs. Beth
Nolan will assume the duties of leadership, replacing Mr. and Mrs. John Gorg. Many thanks to the
Gorges and the great work they have done in the past. The letter I sent out to the community can be
found on the parish website. http://www.stjohntheevangelist.org/ God bless one and all.
Collegiate Answer: Father Damien, Saint Damien of Molokai, 1840 – 1889) served as a member
of the e Sacred Hearts Congregation of Jesus and Mary, a missionary religious institute. He won
recognition for his ministry from 1873 to 1889 in the Kingdom of Hawaii to people with leprosy (also
known as Hansen's disease), who were required to live under a government-sanctioned medical
quarantine on the island of Molokai
Collegiate Question: What is the meaning the symbol of the “anchor” in the early Church? This is a
good question.

Greetings! I would like to
congratulate the 8th Grade
class, who I have known for the
last five years. An energetic
group, I have seen them grow and mature into
fine young ladies and young men. The thing I
would like them to take to high school next
year is this: there is a great need for spiritual
and emotional leadership in today's high
schools. I hope God will inspire them to be
leaders in whatever schools they choose to
attend. Parents of SJES students are reminded
there will be a Principal's Chat on May
17 from 8:15-9AM in the elementary school
lobby. Light refreshments will be served and
the agenda will center on the school plans for
the 2016-17 school year. Please join us if you
can. I have appreciated all the support I have
received from this giving parish over the last
five years, and I will pray for you all as I
embark on my retirement this summer. Have a
great week and God bless you!

Are You Interested in Learning
more about the Bible?
YOUNG @
New this Year!
Study the Bible at your own pace
and at home.
Parishioners, family and friends, and even new friends
can sign up to watch the videos online and get together
for discussions at any time and place they wish. The
bible studies to be made available are listed below.
Whenyou visit the parish website www.sje1.org and click on
the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with
available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study
and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that
St. John's is making available. Once you log in and
purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the
videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies
in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website.
These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for
an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add
other studies in the future. If you have any questions,
please call the Religious Ed office at 540-347-2922 x209.
The first Study, started in October, was “The Bible
Timeline: The Story of Salvation.” The 24 lessons in
“The Bible Timeline” guide the student of Scripture through the
reading of the biblical narrative.
In 2013, “Matthew: The King and his Kingdom,”
another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture
narrative in “The Bible Timeline.” The gospel of Matthew
explores the life and mission of Jesus.
Following Matthew was “Acts: The Spread of the
Kingdom” **in 2014. This study shows how the Church
continued the work of Christ after the coming of the
Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon
In the early summer of 2015 we offered “Mary: A
Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother” in one day.
This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals Mary's
unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives.
In the fall of 2015 “Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to
Come” an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom
established by Christ in his Church is intimately
connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will
discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation
mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic
vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine
Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united
in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into
every time we celebrate the Mass.
In 2016 the Bible Study group covered “James: Pearls
for Wise Living” described as a “book of wisdom.”
James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the
fledgling church in the face of persecution.
All over 55 are welcome.
We meet the first Friday of each month at
Mercy Hall at 9:15am. No dues or fund

The world was a playground for Mickey,
a naive Irish American kid bored with
his life. His father served in World War
II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam;
now it was his turn. His 365 days in
Vietnam builds in torment until an
attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia.
Wounded, his friend captured, he
becomes a tormented survivor knowing
he is always just a heartbeat from death.
