On September 21, 2013, the Carson Newman University`s Mortar

As one of the Mortar Board’s service projects, the
BOOST 5K Color Run this year was a success. In order to add fun to the run, white t-shirts were given to
every participant so that the powder color could be
more easily recognized. In the picture above, a few
participants were reaching the halfway marker. The
race was held around the two lap campus course. The
pictures below are just a few snapshots of the event.
On September 21, 2013, the
Carson Newman University’s
Mortar Board members and
advisors for the 2013-2014
year met at the Seaton House
for an evening of fellowship
and planning fundraising
opportunities and numerous
service projects. After eating
pizza and homemade baked
goodies, everyone came to-
gether for a “get to know
you” ice breaker to establish
each individual’s presence
while creating community
amongst the group. Immediately following the ice breaker, the president, Liz Campbell and vice president, Lindsay Stevens, led a personality
quiz to recognize the diverse
personalities in the room.
Based on those results, everyone was divided into four
diverse small groups to
brainstorm about future fundraising and community service events. After twenty
minutes, the entire group
discussed all opportunities
and collaborated on each of
those individually. The passion for serving in the community, the drive to lead on
campus, and motivation to
excel academically was evident in each of this year’s
members, as well as the inspiration provided by our
faculty sponsors: Dr. Christine Dalton and Dr.
Kara Stooksbury.

October 3: Chick-Fil-A sales begin after Thursday’s CLW in front of First Baptist Church. Continuing once a week throughout the fall semester.

October 19: Carson-Newman University Homecoming. Mortar Board Alumni reception to be held
in Sarah Swann Parlor from 9:30 until 11:30 am.

October 20: Carson-Newman’s annual Mortar
Board Halloween Party and bonfire at Dr. Bob
Trentham’s house at 7 o’clock.

October 24: Mortar Board’s music coffee house
held in the Phoenix Theater at 6 o’clock pm.

November 8: Deadline for Christmas Cards to the
Troops.

December 2: Mortar Board’s Christmas breakfast.

December 3: Mortar Board’s Christmas party and
gift delivery for foster children in the East Tennessee region.


The Carson Newman Chapter was
blessed to send the 2013-2014 vice
president, Lindsay Stevens to the annual
Mortar Board National Conference in
Atlanta, Georgia on August 2-4. Not
only did she did enjoy meeting delegates from several other chapters, but
she was able to return and share the
knowledge she gained of ways to lead
and serve in the classroom, on campus,
and in the community.

A Letter from our President
Greetings all! On Sunday September 22, 2013, the Panathenées
chapter of Mortar Board at CarsonNewman University met for the
annual planning retreat. The retreat was held at the Seaton Guest
house on Carson-Newman campus and it was a huge success! Every member was in attendance as well as both
faculty sponsors. We began our retreat by socializing and
enjoying refreshments. After playing an ice breaker game
led by our head peon, John Kimbrough, we got right to
business and began planning the year’s events. There
were so many great projects presented that we had trouble narrowing them down! My favorites that we chose to
take on are President for a Day, Musical Benefit Concert,
and a Christmas party for local foster children. President
for a Day involves students raising money to get the
chance to switch lives with our University President, Dr.
O’Brien, for a full work day. The Musical Benefit Concert
will take place on campus and students have the opportunity to audition to play. Also, audience members have
the opportunity to perform if they so desire. Lastly, the
Christmas party for local foster children is just that, a
Christmas party. We are hoping to partner with various
organizations to raise enough money to buy gifts for
these children or even take gift donations at Mortar
Board events. I am pleased to confirm that the Bone Marrow Drive that was such a success last year is also going
to be an event for us this year. Another traditional event,
the B.O.O.S.T Your Speed 5K was such a huge success last
year that we have had organizations asking to be involved
with it this year! Not only are we still going to host the 5K,
but we are aiming to make it an all-day event complete
with booths, exercise leaders, nutritional consultants, fun
runs for younger children, etc. Needless to say, the Panathenées chapter of Mortar Board have their hands full
this year, and we are thrilled to get started.
