It was not by chance that at the time of Miklós Fényes Fertőd rivalled the fame of Potsdam and Versailles. There was a year when Haydn gave more than a hundred performances and music fans from
Vienna, Bratislava and Pest-Buda came to listen to the Master. The bodyguard and writer György Bessenyei was right to call Eszterháza the Hungarian Versailles.
In the renovated castle and the Marionette Theatre that is opening now, we invite our audience to a
series of concerts of high quality even by European standards.
The Festivities at Eszterháza (Eszterházi Vigasságok) just starting are expected to establish our express belief that in a few years Fertőd will again become one of the cultural centres of Europe.

“Eszterháza awakes, laughing laughs of delight, and it starts another feast with its joyful people” was what a
certain György Bessenyei, guard lieutenant, put down on paper in 1772. In his poem titled Eszterháza Festivities, the outstanding poet of the Age of Enlightenment did what we would today refer to as reporting about
the festivities at the court of Prince Nikolaus Esterházy the Magnificent, which were comparable to the pomp
of royal courts.
Eszterháza awakes again and starts its festivities anew. These years, however, we are renewing and restoring
the Esterházy Palace in Fertőd to its previous glory, using support received from the European Union and the
Hungarian government. We are doing all this with the aim to make Eszterháza once again a citadel of culture
with a European reputation; such a renowned Central European cultural centre where Haydn’s music finds an
inspirational home along with Baroque and the Romantic age, jazz, and all genres of art. We aspire to achieve
this following both the traditions of Hungarian culture and the heritage of Nikolaus Esterházy the Magnificent.
We wish to create a tradition with the Eszterháza Festivities, the longest Hungarian music festival series lasting
until mid-September. Our goal is to fill the palace with music and artistic life again, now that it has regained
its old glory.
I wish the joyful people of Eszterháza will laugh laughs of delight as they see and hear these programmes in
the summer of 2013!

now reviving enigma of a timelessly shining venue, radiating talent and spirit, which have all been bequeathed
to us in Eszterháza. We believe that you, the listeners, will take with you the ethereal beauty of Nikolaus the
Magnificent’s dream, the Fairy World of Eszterháza, the music of Haydn and the old times, when you return to
the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The “ethereal work of art” is the connection between the past and present and it can also bring us closer to
understanding ourselves.

Opening Festival of the Marionette Theatre – 31 MAY–2 JUNE 2013
During the heyday of Eszterháza the festivals and celebrations could not lack puppetry operettas and marionette plays, for which Nikolaus Esterházy the Magnificent had a separate theatre building constructed. The
Marionette Theatre built in the park of the palace was opened in 1773, featuring the only marionette opera
of Haydn, Philemon and Baucis, conducted by the Maestro himself. What other performance could be chosen to reopen the gates of the Marionette Theatre two hundred and forty years later?

This year we remember the 300th anniversary of Prince Paul Esterházy’s passing; he had a lasting legacy
both as a politician, composer and poet. Eszterháza pays homage to the man who compiled Harmonia
Caelestis by evoking the music of the late 17th and early 18th centuries: the audience can enjoy Turkish and

The name of Márta Sebestyén has become a beacon. The singer, who has won Liszt, Kossuth and Prima
Primissima awards, is one of the few Hungarian performers who represent traditional Hungarian culture
without changes or alterations both in the country and abroad. She has sung for the Japanese emperor,
Spanish king, and British monarch. They all had the opportunity to get to know songs of the Hungarian

Hungary’s most beautiful Baroque palace was built by Lake Fertő in the spirit of this sentence. Not only highly
ranked families of the age visited Eszterháza but even the Empress/Queen Maria Theresa herself was one of
the guests of the palace, not to mention the great composer Joseph Haydn, who lived and worked here. Eszterháza is not only one of the most valuable gems of our national heritage but it is also one of the most important
shrines of European music culture.
