Medina Calendar 2015-16
Medina Central School District
A Message from the Superintendent
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Welcome to a new school year! I am excited to start
the 2015-16 school year in the Medina Central School
District. The Mission of our school district reads, “All
students of the Medina Central School District will reach
their full individual potential: academically, emotionally,
physically and socially.” I share our Mission with parents
to communicate our school district expectations. One
thing is certain- our district needs ongoing support from
all stakeholders, including families to reach our mission.
We ask that you collaborate with our school district to
help ensure our students will be college and /or career
ready upon graduation. This partnership between schools
and families will also strengthen our school district,
as we all want what is best for all children attending
MCSD. Parent involvement and engagement is one
of the six tenets of effective schools. As a district, our
goal is to ensure our parents are engaged and involved
in our district initiatives. Please know that you are
always welcome in our schools, district office and all
extracurricular events. Together we can, and will build
a school district of excellence.
Student achievement will remain our focus in 2015-16.
As a district, we continue to make great strides in
the area of academic achievement
including improved graduation rates
and improved passing percentages
on many Regents examinations.
This improvement cannot be made
in isolation, but through a strong
partnership between our district and
the community. Our teachers and
support staff have worked tirelessly
to bring about effective changes in
curriculum, instruction and assessment practices.
The Medina School District is moving in a very positive
direction and we must continue this momentum as we
focus on the future.
This calendar publication is designed to familiarize you
with the programs, policies and services of the Medina
Central School District, as well as provide you with a
quick reference for scheduled meetings and activities
throughout the year. For the most current information and
news, refer to the District website at www.medinacsd.org.
You can also like us on Facebook as we use social media
to communicate the many good things going on in our
district. If you have any questions during the year, please
do not hesitate to call my office at (585) 798-2700. I look
forward to a great school year!

Emergency School Closings
In the event that school must be closed because of weather or emergency conditions, the students will be
transported home according to the regular bus schedule. Children should be told what they should do in case no
one is home when they arrive home early. The announcement for emergency and weather school closings will be
shared with the community through the following:

Attendance Policy
It is a well-known fact that being a good student
starts with good attendance. In fact, good
attendance is important in school, work, sports, club
activities, and any other aspect of life.
Having good attendance lets others know that you
are responsible and take your work seriously. That is
important to being a good student, a good employee
and a good citizen. In order to do well in school, you
must first make sure you are in school on time.
Therefore, in keeping up with New York State Law,
the Medina Board of Education has adopted an
attendance policy, which applies to all students grades
K through 12.
Who is required to attend school?
According to New York State Law, children must
attend school between the ages of six and 17. A
student who turns 17 years of age during a school
year must continue in attendance until the end of the
school year.
What happens when a student is absent?
The student must present a signed note from the
parent giving the child’s full name, date, days of
absence and reason for absence on the day of return
to the designated person responsible for attendance
in that building.
What is an excused absence?
Excused absences include personal illness, illness
or death in the family, religious observance, medical
appointments, quarantine, impassable roads due to
inclement weather, approved college visits, required
presence in court, military obligations, approved
educational trips, approved cooperative work programs,
drivers test, job interviews or other such reasons as may
be approved by the Board of Education. An absence
for any other reason is unexcused and is so noted on
the student’s record. After three days without a written
excuse, the student’s absence will be recorded as an
unexcused absence.
How will unexcused absences from class affect a
student?
In grades K-12 consequences may include, but are not
limited to, in-school suspension, detention, and denial
of participation in interscholastic, extracurricular,
co-curricular fieldtrips and activities.
How would a student know how many absences they
have?
Although it is the student’s responsibility to keep track
of their own attendance, the school will notify parents
when attendance becomes a problem. The notifications
will alert you that possible consequences may result.
However, students or parents may consult with the
school at any time to find out the student’s current
attendance status.
What happens when a student needs to be excused
from school early?
In grades K-12, the student should present a note, signed
and dated by the parent/guardian, to the designated
person responsible for attendance in their building.

dress appropriately for school and school functions. Students and their parents
have the primary responsibility for acceptable student dress and appearance.
Teachers and all other district personnel should exemplify and reinforce acceptable
student dress and help students develop an understanding of appropriate
appearance in the school setting. A student’s dress, grooming and appearance,
including hairstyle/color, jewelry, makeup and nails, should:
1. Be safe, appropriate and not disrupt or interfere with the educational process.
2. Recognize that extremely brief garments such as tube tops, net tops, halter
tops, spaghetti straps, plunging necklines (front and/or back) and see-through
garments are not appropriate.
3. Ensure that underwear is completely covered with outer clothing.
4. Include footwear at all times. Footwear that is a safety hazard will not be
allowed.
5. Not include the wearing of hats in the classroom or any other headgear that
detracts from the learning environment, except for a medical or religious
purpose.
6. Not include items that are vulgar, obscene, and libelous or denigrate others on
account of race, color, religion, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation
or disability.
7. Not promote and/or endorse the use of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs and/or
encourage other illegal or violent activities.
Each building principal or his or her designee shall be responsible for informing all
students and their parents of the student dress code at the beginning of the school
year and any revisions to the dress code made during the school year.
Students who violate the student dress code shall be required to modify their
appearance by covering or removing the offending item and, of necessary or
practical, replacing it with an acceptable item. Any student who refuses to do so
shall be subject to further discipline, up to and including out of school suspension.
School Food Service
The Medina Central School District’s Food Service Program is contracted through
Aramark Education, who will offer nutritious breakfast and lunch for students in
grades kindergarten through twelve. Under new federal guidelines, districts are
required to offer more nutritious meals, more fruits and vegetables. School meals
are subsidized by the state and federal governments to help schools keep the cost
per lunch low so most students may participate in the program.
Additional subsidies are available for families who are eligible for the Free and
Reduced Lunch Program. *A NEW application for Free and Reduced Meals must
be turned in by October 1st each school year to be considered for the program.

Policy #7320 Alcohol, Drugs and Other Substances (Students)
The Board of Education recognizes that the misuse of drugs, and/or alcohol is
a serious problem with legal, physical, emotional and social implications for the
entire community. Therefore, the consumption, sharing and/or selling, use and/or
possession of alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, counterfeit and designer drugs,
or paraphernalia for the use of such drugs is prohibited at any school-sponsored
event or on school property at all times. The inappropriate use of prescription and
over-the-counter drugs shall also be disallowed. Persons shall be banned from
entering school grounds or school-sponsored events when exhibiting behavioral,
personal or physical characteristics indicative of having used or consumed alcohol
or other substances.
Through the collaborative efforts of staff, students, parents/legal guardians and the
community as a whole, a certifiable comprehensive program shall be developed
addressing alcohol and other substances to include the following elements:
• An age-appropriate drug and alcohol prevention program for students in all
grades from early childhood level through grade 12;
• Intervention, to eliminate any existing use/abuse and provide support services
to all students in all grades from early childhood level through grade 12
considered to be at risk for use/abuse;
• Standards of conduct and appropriate disciplinary measures for both students
and staff within the framework of the District discipline policy and applicable
New York State Law;
• Ongoing training of District staff about the components of an effective program;
• Implementation, dissemination and monitoring of District policy and regulation
on alcohol and other substances
Parents’ Bill of Rights for Data Safety and Security
The purpose of the Parents’ Bill of rights is to inform parents (which also includes legal guardians or persons in parental relation to the student, but generally not the parents of
a student who is age eighteen or over) of the legal requirements regarding privacy, security and use of student data. In addition to the Federal Family Educational Rights and
Privacy ACT (FERPA), Education Law §2-d provides important new protections for student data, and new remedies for breaches of the responsibility to maintain the security
and confidentiality of such data.
