mentoring, tutoring, and nurturing 100 children
in a school year…and we are delighted to inform
you that we’ve reached that goal this year!
100 Star Kids are shining bright.
Fifteen years ago, our founder, Dr. Tim Flanigan
and our first Executive Director, Sue Petronello,
had the dream to grow our scholarship program to
support 100 students in a school year. They were
joined by dedicated staff, volunteers, board
members, parents, educators, and a terrific group
of hard-working children.
To all of you, the Star Kids family says thank you
for helping us reach our goal!
Star Kids
Scholarship Program…
Making a Difference in the Lives of Children.
The mission of the Star Kids Scholarship Program is to
provide educational opportunities in the form of tuition aid
to effective non-public schools, uniforms, after-school and
summer programs, tutoring and mentoring for those high
risk, low-income children who have a parent with a history
of incarceration and/or substance abuse. Children are
typically enrolled in the program between kindergarten
and Grade 4.
Star Kids’ goal for each child is to graduate from high school.
By completing high school and hopefully going on to higher
education, these children will have a greater chance of
breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty, drug use,
disease, depression and violence.
The target areas for the program are the southeastern
New England communities of Newport County, Rhode Island
and Fall River and New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Star Kids was founded in 2000 by Timothy Flanigan, MD,
Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the
Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and HIV
and Infectious Disease Physician at the Miriam and
Rhode Island Hospitals.

Miracles strut about in funny disguises
Sometimes they come straight at you
dancing on the moon,
shooting out the stars
other times they creep up quietly
sliding into your heart with hardly
a sound or a change of tide
the miracle we love best
is a child achieving full potential
it really is all about salvation
the belief in the inherent
goodness of each person
and the giving…giving
tools, skills, love
and the power to persevere
thank you for your miracle of giving…

Star Kids selects effective non-public schools that will provide an
excellent education, as well as a safe, structured, and nurturing

special education or family preference. These students continue
in Star Kids and are given opportunities for tutoring, after-school
programs, summer camps, and mentoring. Participating schools in

after-School programs/tutoring
Our program encourages and supports after-school activities for
Star Kids students. Children benefit in many ways by being
involved in extra-curricular activities. After-school activites have
included cooking classes, music lessons, skiing lessons, gynmastics,
team sports, and dance.
To assist with academic success, we work closely with our partnering
schools to ensure that each child’s academic needs are met.
In the 2014-15 academic year, six Star Kids received extensive
tutoring support from private tutors, and many more received
tutoring from teachers or peers within their school. For a handful
of children, tutoring continued during the summer months to
ensure a smooth transition to the next grade level.
Mentor program
The goal of the Star Kids Scholarship Mentor Program is to provide
mentoring to interested students beginning at age five, or at any
point thereafter. Mentors are role models who contribute to a
child’s academic success through the gift of time and attention.
They also add a little fun to a child’s life. Mentor relationships
begin as school-based, as mentors help the student with school
work and spend time getting to know each other. Each mentor/
student relationship is unique and develops in its own way.
Star Kids has partnered with with Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Rhode Island to pair college student mentors with children
enrolled in existing after-school programs. Mentors are another
invaluable part of our children’s academic success.
“
I decided to start mentoring with the Star Kids
program as a way of giving back to my community.
I began meeting with my mentee when she was a
3rd grader and have seen her grow into a beautiful
and confident young woman who is now an
8th grader. I felt I might be able to offer her some
opportunities as well as be there to encourage her
growth and education. I wanted to make a positive
impact, even just a small one. What I didn’t realize
at the time was that she would also have an impact
on me. I hope to see our bond continue for the
foreseeable future. I will always be available to
her as a mentor and, of course, as a friend.

Summer programs
Summer is the perfect time to expose students to new interests.
Through the generosity of our supporters and community
partners, Star Kids were offered a wide variety of summer camp
experiences. We are proud of the students for their openness to
try new things and stay engaged during the summer months.
Over 20 weeks of camp scholarships were awarded to Star Kids
from area camps, including Newport Cooks!, Newport Gulls
Baseball Camp, Newport Yacht Club, Norman Bird Sanctuary,
Oliver Hazard Perry RI, Sail Newport and St. Michael’s Country
Day School. In 2015, an increased number of families took
advantage of the camp funding offered by Star Kids and the
camp scholarship offerings.
Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island offered an education at sea for
three teenage Star Kids for the second summer in a row, due to
the generosity of Star Kids board member Lisa Lewis. This unique
opportunity offered a chance for our high school students to
move out of their comfort zone and experience life at sea for one
week in August.

★ STAR KIDS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – NEWPORT/FALL RIVER
Children’s events
Children’s events are an important part of our program for a number
of reasons. Our outings provide an opportunity for the children
and families to come together as a community. The students in our
program feel they are a part of something important that inspires
them to do their best in school. The gatherings also allow us to talk
with the children throughout the year outside of school, catch up
on how they are doing, and hear about their hopes for future
academic plans. Five children’s events are held each year for
students and their families. Each September when we visit children
at their schools, they eagerly inquire about the year’s upcoming
events! Mentors, sponsors and board members often attend these
events and interact with the children.

financial review
overview of Giving
Thanks to our many gracious donors, the Newport/Fall River
Chapter of the Star Kids Scholarship Program raised $367,028
through foundations, private donors, and our founder, Dr. Tim
Flanigan, during the 2014-15 fiscal year. We are working hard to
break the intergenerational cycle of crime, poverty, substance
abuse, disease, and depression, which has gripped far too many
of our local families. Our partnering schools invested $381,964
in tuition revenue, allowing our Star Kids to have tremendous
educational experiences. Together, we are creating a better future
for these scholars.

foundation Grants
Foundations consistently provide additional key funding to supplement
our Educational Program. These program expenses include tuition,
after-school programs, summer camps, tutoring, and field trips
for our ever-growing student population. Thank you to all of the
foundations who helped us to raise over $100,000 during the
2014-15 fiscal year.
Special recognition is given to the van Beuren Charitable Foundation
for its significant investment in our Children’s Educational Program.
Their past generosity not only continued to fund three Star Kids at
Newport County and Fall River parochial schools, but in 2014-15,
the foundation also granted funding to defray the rising cost of
tuition for three Star Kids attending St. Andrew’s School in
Barrington, RI, The Prout School in Wakefield, RI, and Rocky Hill
School in East Greenwich, RI. In addition, Negley Flinn Charitable
Foundation provided funding to assist a fifth scholar for four years,
and also donated to our summer programs for 2015. The Wilcox
Family Foundation again so generously provided us with eight
scholarships in 2014-15 for Star Kids. The George and Mary Kremer
Foundation, funded three full scholarships again for a partnering
Catholic School in Fall River, the Holy Name School.
Additional foundation funding was generously donated from Donald
and Nancy Cloud, The Purchase Fund, RBC Wealth Management,
BankNewport Charitable Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation,
Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation, supporting our Educational
Program and operating expenses. Alletta Morris McBean Charitable
Foundation, Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund at Newport
Hospital, Nordstrom, and the William C. Horton Fund are all to be
recognized for their tremendous support of our Educational Program.
Fall River Women’s Union, Forest Foundation, The John Clarke
Trust, and the Miss Swinburne Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation
and combined for four full scholarships for our students during the
2014-15 school year. These children attended St. Michael School in
Fall River, MA, Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich, RI, All Saints
Academy in Middletown, RI, and St. Mary Academy – Bay View in
Riverside, RI.
tiverton Senior Center
Each year, the Knitting & Quilting Volunteers, an incredibly talented
and dedicated group of women from the Tiverton Senior Center in
Tiverton, RI, knit hats, scarves, sweaters, blankets and more with
their “magic hands,” all to benefit Star Kids. The Tiverton Senior
Center annually pledges to give $6,000 to Star Kids in support of
three partial scholarships from the proceeds of their hand made
treasures. In 2014-15, these students, all siblings, attended Holy
Trinity School in Fall River, MA. We are so grateful for this lovely
group’s continued generosity and hard work!
We greatly appreciate all of the Educational Program
and operational support which allowed us
to fully serve our Star Kids students and
their families this past year!
fundraising events
lucky 13 Soirée
Star Kids Scholarship Program celebrated 13 years of holding an
annual soirée, with over 175 guests at The Canfield House in
Newport on May 2, 2015. Two of our 2015 high school graduates
greeted guests and then expressed their thanks for the support and
educational opportunities provided by Star Kids. The crowded room
cheered their remarks and applauded their accomplishments.
Excitement filled the room as friends purchased tickets to spin the
Lucky 13 Wheel in hopes of winning one of the many fabulous
prizes. Keel vodka created a specialty “Lean & 13” cocktail to the
delight of our guests and DJ Reggie Charles kept the energy going
with his tunes. Jeff Babka led a first ever live scholarship auction in
hopes of raising tuition funding. The crowd generously responded
to Jeff’s call to action, collectively donating 13 scholarships to
the program. In total, over $80,000 was raised in support of our
educational program. As board member Rachael Romanowski
remarked, “the number 13 was certainly lucky for Star Kids!”

Starride 2015
Thanks to the hard work of co-chairs Kathy Pratt and Darcy
Magratten, the StarRide has become a major fundraising event for
Star Kids. Over $20,000 was raised at this year’s event, up 33%
from last year. We are grateful for the generosity of our sponsors,
riders, in-kind supporters, donors. and many volunteers who made
this day possible. Despite the threat of rain, over 100 participants
gathered to ride, walk or run 6 different routes ranging from 3 to
45 miles around Ocean Drive and Aquidneck Island. Afterward,
those with “lucky” keys opened treasure chests loaded with prizes
and certificates, while enjoying food and music.
“
Nothing in these grey clouds dampened the
spirits of this year’s StarRide, the most successful
and fun yet. Today’s event raised enough to
fund 5 Star Kids, plus add to the educational
program, which means that more children will
participate in Star Kids Scholarship Program.
We’re thrilled. Thank you all!
